In February, when parts of Texas were hit by a fluke snowstorm, Aaron Fisher and David Lapp, CEOs of Blessings of Hope (BOH), a wholesale food bank located on Becker Road in Leola, decided to send Fisher to the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area with a tractor-trailer load of food and water through their Hands of Hope program.
Connie Dienner, founder of Cavod Academy of the Arts in New Holland, has spent the last 20 years establishing a godly environment where students can create with purpose. Her purpose for the virtual 2021 fundraising gala she is currently planning is to show that to the Lancaster community.

Fisher remained in the Lone Star State to oversee distribution. “Food and water was what they needed,” recalled Fisher, who added that trailers went to Houston and Austin as well. “They had no electric or water, so water was in high demand.” Outreaches like shipping 294,600 pounds of food to Texas are made possible by fundraisers like the iCare event BOH has planned for Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata. Both 5K and 10K runs will be held beginning at 8 a.m., and a volleyball tournament will take place during the day. More information on registering for these competitions may be found at www.blessingsofhope.com. Four different auctions will take place during the day, and food items will be available for purchase for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a drive-through food option. In the evening, a by-donation concert will be held. Blessings of Hope was started in 2006, when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that was being wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. Eventually, the ministry developed relationships with more than 80 food producers and began acting as a bank to collect and redistribute food to pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries, along with Hands of Hope food box distributions.

Zooks Homemade Chicken Pies Celebrates Grand Opening! Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies was founded by Amos and Rachel Zook back in 2001. They sold the business to Lee & Rose Anna King (daughter and son-in-law) in 2007 and it has now moved from Harvest Drive to a new location at 3427 Lincoln Hwy East, Paradise, PA 17562. This building had been known as the National Christmas Center for the last 20 years and originally was a restaurant known as The Dutch Town & Country Inn. Today the renovated building offers ample and much needed space to enable Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies to keep up with production of their delicious pies that make a great home cooked meal that anyone can appreciate. On April 15, 16 & 17 the public is invited to a Grand Opening celebration of Dutch Town & Country Market, the retail side of Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies, where you will find not only Zook’s Pies but also Local milk, ice cream, jarred goods, bakery items and other specialty foods. There will be the opportunity to register to win prizes and product samples to taste and enjoy. The retail store hours are 8 am to 5 pm weekdays and Saturdays 8 am to 4 pm.

“(This gala is) for people to really be able to see that Cavod is not just about dance and theater,” said Dienner. “This is a community where people come and support one another and see their kids grow.” In her current role as executive director, Dienner witnesses that growth. “We see (students) come out of their shell and learn disciplines,” she said. Cavod will hold its virtual gala on Thursday, May 6. The preshow will begin at 7:15 p.m., and the show, which will be hosted by Vinnie DePaul and auctioneer David Keller, will be streamed from Rock Lititz at 7:30 p.m. Dienner noted that the event will feature a variety of entertainment, including live and prerecorded singing and dancing performances, spoken word poetry, and a visit from the Cavod Ensemble. Another goal the organization has set for the gala is to have 50 watch parties happening around the county during the event. To encourage watch parties, organizers have set up a special delivery for those who contact Cavod for their complimentary access. “(Watch party hosts) will have a charcuterie board, a bottle of wine, and flowers delivered to their home by a Cavod student in a costume,” shared Dienner. “We will drop everything you need at your door so you can sit with your family and watch or have it on your deck with your friends.” The link to the event will be available through the Cavod website and by searching for “Cavod Academy of the Arts” on Facebook. On March 5, as basketball freethrow shooters warmed up for the B.I.G. Shots event in the Together Community Center gym nearby, Caleb Stiger, who founded the event four years ago, expressed his gratitude for the number of greater Paradise-area businesses and individuals who have gotten involved. “We have been blessed,” he said of he event, which benefits The Factory Ministries. “Every year we have done (the fundraiser), we have raised $10,000 to $15,000.” At that time, Stiger did not know that when all the pledges and donations were added up at the end of the day, the 2021 effort would raise more than $15,000 for the organization. According to Kylie Stoltzfus, director of communications with The Factory, a ministry that endeavors to walk alongside those in need in the Pequea Valley area, Paul Senkowski, Simon Vogt,
and Stiger were the top three fundraisers. Stiger, representing Baron Insurance Group (BIG); Paul Senkowski of McClarigan CPAs; and Matt Herr of Scenic Ridge tied for the highest number of baskets, with 91 each out of a possible 100. Stiger, who opened the Gordonville office of BIG several years ago, said he was pleased to have 27 free throw shooters participate in this year’s event. Most participants represented area businesses, but a few individuals who gathered pledges also took part. Metzler Builders of Lampeter sponsors a special half-court shot award. “When (a participant) finishes with free throws, (he or she) gets one half-court shot,” explained Stiger. A basket from half court triggers an additional $100 donation from Metzler. In addition, The Speckled Hen in Strasburg donated food and coffee for participants. Food for the event was also donated by Stoltzfus Meats. Basketballs for
Dayspring Christian Academy has announced that eased COVID-19 restrictions in Pennsylvania have allowed for in-person dinner and gallery seat tickets to be available for the 2021 Remember America Speaker Series. The event will take place on Saturday, May 1, at 6 p.m. at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. During the event, themed “Return to the Foundation: Reviving the Seed of Our Nation,” Eric Metaxas will interview Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, and there will be choral performances, media, an oration, and more. Tickets are available at www.dayspringchristian.com. Livestream tickets and sponsorships remain available as well.

the fundraiser are provided by Thad Rittenhouse, head basketball coach at Pequea Valley High School. “Our vision when we started was to make businesses familiar with The Factory and what they do here, but as it has grown, we have tried to stretch that,” said Stiger. “Some of
the businesses we have connected with now do business with The Factory.” More information about The Factory, which is located at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, may be found at https://thefactory ministries.com.
Music Fest Scheduled A Music Fest will take place on Saturday, April 10, outdoors at Holy Land Christian Center (Cackleberry Antique Farm), 3371 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held indoors. The performers will be
singer-songwriter Keith Andrew Grim from noon to 1 p.m.; Last Stand, Christian rock ‘n’ roll, from 1 to 2 p.m.; Liz Collins - Heaven Bound Trio, Christian folk and blues, from 3 to 4 p.m.; and Cross Reference Band, blues with a country flavor, from 4 to 5 p.m.

who work in the community under the Employment Services program, there was no break. Community Participation Services, which includes outings with staff members and volunteer work, is now up and running, and the Pathways program is partially open with both in-person and virtual activities. LVS program specialist Jen Swanson reported that Pathways online classes were back on track within two weeks of the shutdown. “We started on a small scale,” said Swanson, who noted that now more than 25 classes are offered. Swanson shared that more than 25 participants are now taking part in classes that range from cooking to Bible studies. Other classes focus on music, theater, sign language, and School of Croc, which utilizes a program created by Gatorland USA. In December 2019, Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) began offering a program called Strengthening Pathways. The program provides a variety of activities that are based on interests of LVS participants. Among the many activities is an art program that includes art lessons in painting and other crafts. Individuals taking part have produced watercolor greeting cards, painted canvases, decorated glassware, candles, and more. The creativity of the Lighthouse participants inspired LVS staff members to schedule a maker’s market to be held in the LVS parking lot, 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market will feature items made by Pathways program participants, along with the work of 20 vendors selling jewelry, watercolor paintings, and
build-your-own terrarium kits, among other items. Four food trucks will be on-site to offer food for purchase to hungry attendees. In addition to the many handmade items that will be for sale, LVS is introducing its cookbook, which will be sold at a discount online prior to the event. “It will be available for presale (Sunday), April 18, through (Friday, April) 23, online,” explained LVS events coordinator Katie Martin, who added that preordered copies may be picked up at the market, and regularly priced books may be purchased there as well. Cookbooks and other LVS items may be purchased online at www.lighthousevoc.org/shop. Those who would like to help LVS purchase art supplies for the market may visit https://a.co/0zyeUUS. Many of the LVS programs shut down in March 2020 due to COVID19 restrictions. For participants
Jake King and Amy Wissing, two of the organizers of the Hand-inHand Fire Company mud sale, are grateful for the volunteers who take part. “The community support behind this thing …” said King. “It’s astounding,” Wissing finished for him. “There are so many people involved who are not firefighters and don’t have family members who are firefighters.” The mud sale, an outdoor annual consignment auction that was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, will take place this year on Thursday, June 24, and Friday, June 25, and will feature five auction blocks. In addition to carriages, antiques, collectibles, plant nursery items, tools, and more will be up for bids. On June 24, food will be served beginning at 3 p.m., and the auction will take place from 3:30 to 8 p.m. On June 25, the auction will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. As in the past, the auction will be located in the large field along Route 340 across from the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant. The GPS address for the location is 338 N. Ronks Road, Bird-in-Hand. Wissing shared that pizza and wings will be available on the night of June 24. King noted that the auction blocks will feature antiques and collectibles, crafts, plant nursery items, flowers, small tack, and tools, along with field rows. Wissing pointed out that field row items are often unusual or unique. “(Items) could be equipment, old windows, old furniture. There are major treasures sometimes like iron statues and anvils,” she stated, adding that old Salvation Army uniforms have been among the finds. King said the June 25 auction will begin with antiques, collectibles, and field row items. He noted that tack, other horse-related items, and plant nursery items like flowers and shrubbery will also be sold. “Scattered throughout the day will be crafts, mini horses and ponies, furniture, and carriages,” he said. Wissing noted that the furniture that goes up for bids often includes a mix of old and new items and that often larger donated items are featured. “If people keep some items aside while they’re spring cleaning and bring them to the sale, that would be wonderful,” said Wissing. Past auctions have featured up to See Mud Sale pg 9

King noted that doughnuts and soft pretzels will be made fresh on site, along with homemade ice cream produced using hit-andmiss engines. Iced tea and lemonade will also be sold. Coming off a year when fundraisers were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, organizers are hoping that the auction will be well attended, but they are also looking forward to bringing the community together. Boneless Seltzer’s Pork Loins Lebanon Bologna
With three straight set victories in singles competition and with juniors Jazae Itegi and Samuel Arena pacing the doubles, the Pequea Valley tennis squad served up its first Lancaster-Lebanon League win of the year on Monday, March 29. The Braves downed Annville-Cleona 6-1 at Kinzers to even their L-L League mark at 1-1 (2-1 overall). Itegi and Arena formed a strong twosome as they defeated their A-C counter parts 8-2. Though Wade Stoltzfus and Nehemiah Glick finished on the short end of an 8-4 doubles match, Josh Jarvis and Brady Burns regained momentum for Pequea on their 8-2 win at number three doubles. Glick and Stoltzfus each earned a point in singles competition, however. At number one singles, Glick rebounded from a 6-3 second set defeat to top Devin Gacono 10-8 in a tiebreaker. Stoltzfus, Jarvis and Burns claimed those aforementioned straight set singles victories. Stoltzfus took the second singles 6-4, 6-3 and Jarvis the number three singles 6-4, 6-4. Burns blanked his opponent 60, 6-0 to give the Braves a dominant win. Three days earlier, the Braves played host to Twin Valley in a non-league match. Joel Peifer and Luke Peifer earned the one doubles victory for the Braves,
posting an 8-5 win. The Braves took five singles matches in straight sets. Burns was the pace setter with a 6-3, 6-3 win at number one singles. Jarvis recorded two shutouts while Stoltzfus and Glick each won 6-0, 6-1. Itegi rounded up the singles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. SOFTBALL The Braves scored two early runs in support of starting pitcher Olivia Ammon, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning of their Section Four game at Lancaster Catholic Tuesday, March 30. However, eight Pequea errors and the inability to plate a run the rest of the way resulted in a 3-2 Crusaders win in extra innings. “Both of the runs they scored to tie the game were unearned,” Braves head coach Doug High pointed out. “I felt bad for Olivia. She should have won the game. We had played our last game [a 70 loss to Hamburg] without an error.” Pequea Valley fell to 0-2 on the year (0-1 league) while the Crusaders improved to 1-2, 1-0. Ammon struck out nine batters and allowed only one walk and five hits in her complete game. Kaitlin Smith went the distance for the Crusaders, allowing four bases on balls and five hits in eight innings while recording 13 strikeouts. Smith struck out two batters in the top of the first inning and nearly escaped a jam she was in. Junior Hailey Yothers made sure she did not leave her teammates stranded on the bases. “Hailey had a nice two-out double with runners on second and third,” High explained. BASEBALL The Braves suffered a 15-1 loss at Lancaster Catholic in their opening game of the season, Tuesday, March 30. It was one of those losses, as head coach Carl Langley said, “We couldn’t find the plate. “We had a combined 16 walks allowed,” said the Pequea coach. “Lancaster Catholic is a good team. I told the boys that they have the skill level to compete with a team like this - compete with the best of ‘em. We just can’t give away extra bases and runs.” Langley did not get a chance to coach the Braves last season due to COVID and the spring sports shutdown. The void carries into this year with an enthusiasm to play hard. “Our team didn’t get the opportunity to play last year,” he noted. “It’s a squad that’s eager and very happy to be out there playing ball again.”

Inspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the homeless, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. “COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’ group was affected. We started tossing around the idea of creating a group called Mitzvah Moms because it sounded cute and also because we thought there might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had almost 100 members. “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” The friends use their Facebook group to create gift baskets to give to people affected by COVID-19. “The baskets include a new, soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth and support.” Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue,
Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among other congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained. The women said donations of items for baskets and monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more donations than people to receive them. “It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re facing the challenge of trying to reach out and identify more people who would like a basket.” Harting and Krouse, who have four children among them and homeschool their kids, said Mitzvah Moms has offered a way to set an example for their families while also making a difference in their community. They have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have offered to help with their project. “The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves,” Krouse said. “There are so many people out there who want to help and want to show their love for their community.” Although they are currently focused on the pandemic, the pair said they plan to continue supporting others once COVID-19 is gone. “We’re already brainstorming ideas for our next projects,” Harting noted. “We are looking at the longevity of Mitzvah Moms and continuing to give back.” The group is seeking both volunteers to help deliver baskets as well as nominations for recipients of baskets. In the spring of 2020, when many events had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the first Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament to benefit Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Girls, an outdoor event, was held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation (Camp Mack), 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown. The fundraiser, the brainchild of Cub Scout Case Baccio, was organized to
help send veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes to the 2020 Warrior Weekend held in July. “(The tournament) went really well,” said Case, a member of Cub Scout Pack 93, who is now a fourth-grader at Bucher Elementary School. “We were able to raise more than $4,000, and there were quite a few people there.” Buoyed by the success of the 2020 event, Case, along with his mother, Ali Bucher, and friend Eric McCullough, are organizing this year’s event, to be held
