Fish Story: Second Blue Skies Fundraiser Scheduled BY ANN MEAD ASH
In the spring of 2020, when many events had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the first Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament to benefit Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Girls, an outdoor event, was held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation (Camp Mack), 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown. The fundraiser, the brainchild of Cub Scout Case Baccio, was organized to help send veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes to the 2020 Warrior Weekend held in July. “(The tournament) went really well,” said Case, a member of Cub Scout Pack 93, who is now a fourth-grader at Bucher Elementary School. “We were able to raise more than $4,000, and there were quite a few people there.”
Cast members taking part in the Lancaster Mennonite High School spring presentation of “All the World’s a Stage” include (from left) Sofia Masciale-Walmer, Josiah Esch, Megan Esch, Chloe Elie, and Isaac Kraenbring.

ccording to Chloe Elie, a member of the cast of the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) theater production, before choosing the spring show, director Dean Sauder bounced some ideas off his drama class students. Elie noted that when the winter musical show had to be canceled, Sauder wanted to choose a spring show that would showcase students’ individual talents. “(Sauder) took a script that was a lot of acting and added singing and dancing,” said Elie. “Everyone gets to shine in their own way (in this show).” “All the World’s a Stage,” a series of six folk tales from Italy, India, Spain, West Africa, Ireland, and Arabia, will be presented in the patio area of Millstream Hall with the audience in the parking lot between Millstream and the Rutt building on the school campus,
different characters. “Another way we are making it fun is by adding pop culture anachronisms (to the timeless tales),” noted cast member Josiah Esch. Masciale-Walmer shared that the biggest challenge is the uncertainty that has surrounded COVID-19 cases and resulting restrictions, but she noted that students are facing the situation with a flexible attitude. “If something happens, we will try to make a way around it,” she said. “But we are putting a ton of hard work in, and if it doesn’t happen, we have to (be prepared) deal with it.” While there is no cost to attend one of the shows, tickets are required. There will be opportunities to donate to the Lancaster Mennonite drama group. Tickets may be reserved by emailing boxoffice@ lancastemennonite.org, calling the box office at 717-740-2456, or visiting www.lancastermennonite.org.

Connie Dienner, founder of Cavod Academy of the Arts in New Holland, has spent the last 20 years establishing a godly environment where students can create with purpose. Her purpose for the virtual 2021 fundraising gala she is currently planning is to show that to the Lancaster community. “(This gala is) for people to really be able to see that Cavod is not just about dance and theater,” said Dienner. “This is a community where people come and support one another and see their kids grow.” In her current role as executive director, Dienner witnesses that growth. “We see (students) come out of their shell and learn disciplines,” she said. Cavod will hold its virtual gala on Thursday, May 6. The preshow will begin at 7:15 p.m., and the show, which will be hosted by Vinnie DePaul and auctioneer David Keller, will be streamed from Rock Lititz at 7:30 p.m. Dienner noted that the event will fea-
ture a variety of entertainment, including live and prerecorded singing and dancing performances, spoken word poetry, and a visit from the Cavod Ensemble. Among the many entertaining presentations, Dienner was especially excited about a segment where DePaul will question young Cavod students in a feature reminiscent of Art Linkletter. “ We are filming Vinnie asking children from Cavod what they like about Cavod,” said Dienner. Keller will auction several experience packages during the event, and viewers will be able to bid online or by smartphone. While Dienner noted that most of the items will be surprises, she shared that Darla’s Hair Care and Spa in Intercourse has donated a day in the salon that will include pedicures, manicures, and massages. A silent auction will open online at https://cavod.org on Monday, May 3, and remain open through Sunday, May 9. Dienner said that organizers have set a goal of offering 50

The exhibition is available for public viewing at https://pcad.edu/exhibits _beyond/. All featured artworks were created by students and faculty of the Center for Creative Ex ploration at PCA&D. In early 2021, residents of the Garden Spot Village community were invited to participate in a series of online workshops focusing on watercolor, collage, Notan design, poetry, and automatic drawing. Across a variety of media, this exhibit unites the residents of Garden Spot Village and the PCA&D community in creativity during a time
of uncertainty and isolation. “Zammesei” is a celebration of art’s intrinsic ability to bring people together. Artists include Hannah Bost, Lindsey Cammauf, Matt Chapman, Erin Dorney, Donna Felton, Noelle Fortna, Eva Gallagher, Bertha Hawk, Evelyn Hershey, Le Hinton, Angie Hohenadel, Doreen Jacoby, Michael Kelchner, Lia Lindemuth, Nichole Madonna, Connie McKane, Donna Milton, Joann Monk, and Barbara Strasko. Originally from Slatington, Thackray works as a life enrichment aide at a local senior living facility on the weekends while pursuing her college education. She is also an active member of CORE Gallery, the student-run exhibition space, and engages in special projects for the Main Gallery at PCA&D. As curator of “Zammesei: Bringing the Lancaster Community Together Through the Arts,” Thackray merged her love for education, the community, and gallery work.

When Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) musical, looked into securing the rights for a spring show that the school would be able to stream, she did not know that her choice of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” would be met with intense student enthusiasm. “This group was jumping out of their skin with excitement,” recalled Wagner, who added that the students know the characters and the melodies and wanted to work on learning the show as soon as the books arrived. “‘The Little Mermaid’ is the story of Ariel, played by Sheridan Riva, a mermaid princess
with a beautiful singing voice, who lives in an undersea kingdom. Ariel should be content, but she desires the one thing she cannot have: life on land. When Ariel recues a human prince named Eric, played by Henry Greiner, from a storm at sea and falls in love with him, she is even more determined to realize her dream. She defies her father, King Triton, played by Zac Snyder, and bargains with sea witch Ursula, played by Kati Lyle, who demands Ariel’s voice in exchange for entry into Prince Eric’s world. With help from Flounder, played by Oliver Hughes; Scuttle, played by Caroline Erb; and Sebastian, played by Isabelle Titzer, Ariel works to gain the love of the prince without
being able to speak. If they fail, she will lose her soul to Ursula. The show will be presented at the school to a limited audience by invitation. The stream will be available from Sunday, April 18, through Sunday, May 2, at 7 p.m. each evening. Tickets to watch the streamed show may be purchased through the Fine and Performing Arts link under Student Life at www.lchsyes.org or by searching for “Lancaster Catholic High School” at www.showtix4u.com. Bird-in-Hand Stage recently announced the return of “Ryan & Friends: Comedy Calamity,” a mix of wholesome comedy and musical entertainment for people of all ages featuring ventriloquist Ryan Bomgardner. The lighthearted program combines a comedy routine and song parodies in styles ranging from country to Broadway. Because of the pandemic, safety precautions have been set in place at the venue, including frequent cleaning and disinfecting of common areas and hightouch surfaces, hand sanitizer stations throughout the property, limited capacity for ticket sales and adjusted seating to space guests 6 feet apart. Masks are required for guests and staff members in common areas, and there are

Wagner noted that creating convincing underwater scenes through choreography, staging, lighting, and costumes is also a challenge. During a year of uncertainty, Wagner said she is happy to offer students roles playing the iconic Disney characters. “They needed something they love and can grab on to,” she said.

Barely 30-something, husband, father, and New Holland borough council member Bryant Glick sat down a while ago to talk about what he loves about the town he serves. Glick, who moved to the area from Gordonville in 2000, talked about the activities he would include if a friend from out of the area came to spend a day with him in New Holland. “I would start with the Kauffman Building and a visit to Lickity Split,” said Glick, noting that he would begin his friend’s tour of downtown with a short discussion of the historical aspects of the building. From there, Glick would

take his friend on a short walk across Main Street to the Tannery Antiques, where he would introduce his friend to owners Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy. “It’s more than a flea market,” shared Glick, explaining that the couple buys and sells a variety of items that they ship countrywide. Glick pointed out the history of the building on the corner of Main and Railroad, stating that it was once the home of Rubinson’s Department Store. “That building is part of the history of our community,” he said. Moving away from Main Street, Glick said the New Holland Community Memorial Park would be featured on his tour. “I would show (my friend) how big it is,” he said, adding that the playgrounds and the pitch and putt golf course would be highlights. “We would maybe play golf,” he noted. Back on Main Street and just around the corner from the park, Glick said he would take his friend to enjoy a cup at The Coffee Co., which was once Squireside and housed several businesses before that. As with the Kauffman and Rubinson’s buildings, Glick pointed out that the facilities are older, but have been revitalized and reused to create new businesses. “Businesses come and go, but these are people choosing to invest in New Holland,” he said. Glick said he would finish the day with a pie at Palermos Pizza and Italian Restaurant, which is found going west on
Main Street. “Palermo’s pizza is made with tender loving care,” said Glick. “It’s a familyowned business.” That New Holland boasts a number of small businesses where the owner is regularly present means something to Glick. “ When you go into businesses (in New Holland), you can feel the warmth,” he said. “It’s not corporate America. (Rather,) it’s a small town where the owner works behind the counter and you get one-on-one face time with them.” Glick was 11 when he and his family moved to The Willows development, but New Holland is where Glick feels most at home. “I love this town. This is my hometown,” said Glick, who believes his feelings are shared by many other area residents. “I know a lot of people who care about the community,” he said. Listing attributes of the borough comes easily to Glick. “We have a rich history and tradition in New Holland,” he said. “New Holland is a great place to live, work, and raise a family,” he said. “It was a great childhood (home) for me, and I want to continue to give that to my children.” New Holland has retained a feeling of yesteryear, according to Glick. “The uniqueness of New Holland is that it still has that small-town feel in the 21st century,” he said. “There’s a friendliness (because) we are a community of neighbors. We know each other, and people look out for each other.”
Blessings Of Hope Slates iCare Event BY ANN MEAD ASH
In February, when parts of Texas were hit by a fluke snowstorm, Aaron Fisher and David Lapp, CEOs of Blessings of Hope (BOH), a wholesale food bank located on Becker Road in Leola, decided
to send Fisher to the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area with a tractor-trailer load of food and water through their Hands of Hope program. Although Fisher thought he would only be gone a few days, over the next two weeks, 12 tractor-trailer loads
Volunteers collect and pack food items at Blessings of Hope, a wholesale food bank in Leola.
of food boxes containing fruit, vegetables, milk, yogurt, and other food items, along with skids of water, traveled from Leola to Texas. Fisher remained in the Lone Star State to oversee distribution. “Food and water was what they needed,” recalled Fisher, who added that trailers went to Houston and Austin as well. “They had no electric or water, so water was in high demand.” Outreaches like shipping 294,600 pounds of food to Texas are made possible by fundraisers like the iCare event BOH has planned for Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata. The outdoor event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 28 and at 6:30 a.m. on May 29. See iCare pg 20

Bucher noted that one participant caught a large catfish, but McCullough added that the largest fish caught that day was a bass. According to Bucher, two goals of this year’s tournament are to attract more veterans and to double the amount that was raised last year. “We want to promote the community getting together for this,” she said. “We’d like to see some new people.” Individuals who are interested in registering for the event may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “2nd Annual Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament benefiting BS3G.” Readers who have questions may call 717-2245923 or 910-964-8594.

this number has grown. Lenord’s twin brother, Genord Bonnegre, and his wife, Angela, and their family, of New Holland, decided to host their own fundraiser dinner in Pennsylvania. Trish was raised in the larger Holmes County area of Ohio and met Lenord Bonnegre in Haiti over 21 years ago. They married in 2010. Together they launched Restoring Lives Ministry to serve the Haitian people through church activities, pastoral training, and providing education to youths and children. The ministry’s goal is to bring freedom, deliverance, and hope to the people of Haiti. Lenord felt he was being called to ministry in his late teens. Although the call to the ministry was clear, he was unsure how he should go about following it. Eventually, he began exploring how he could serve people in the United States and use these efforts as an avenue to raise funds to help his own people in the village of Passé boi d’ormes (pronounced “paws-bwadom”) in Haiti. Most of the food for the upcoming fundraiser will be prepared in the same style that Lenord grew up with. Donations will be accepted to benefit the ministry. The Pequea Valley baseball team used five big hits and a slew of walks to manufacture 11 runs, defeating Tulpehocken 11-0 on Monday. With the win in this non-league game, the Braves evened their record at 1-1. “It was a good win for the boys, especially coming off the loss to Lancaster Catholic,” head coach Carl Langley said, referring to the season-opening defeat. Gavin Eby started for the Braves. The junior pitcher went all five innings and struck out six. He was in command, registering a complete game when the

mercy rule went into effect after five frames. “He got ahead of hitters and got them out,” Langley said. On the Pequea side, the batters were patient and took advantage of the Tulpehocken pitchers’ inability to locate the strike zone. “In our three games so far, we have 15 walks,” Langley noted, referring also to Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to Annville-Cleona. Jaden Estevez had two hits and drove in three runs for the Braves in this victory. Sophomore Cristian Smucker had a hit and drove in a pair. Eby helped his own cause by knocking in two runs. The Braves fell to 0-2 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League with the loss to Annville. It was a loss that Langley referred to as “heartbreaking.” The Dutchmen scored on a bounding ball past the reach of Pequea infielders for a two-run RBI in the sixth. “It was one of those heartbreaking losses,” Langley said. “Annville is one of the better teams in our section. I told the kids that I hope they walk away with confidence for the way they played.” Estevez took the tough loss, giving up two unearned runs in the sixth inning. “He pitched such a good game,” said the coach. “We had an error. They got one more runner on base and then a sacrifice bunt.” Estevez got the next out, but a high chopper was over the third baseman’s head for two runs. Estevez struck out seven and walked three in six innings. “Both runs were unearned and he only gave up three hits,” Langley
noted. “Baseball is a game of inches. On another day, this game could have gone our way.” SOFTBALL The Braves defeated AnnvilleCleona 12-1 in a Section Four softball game at Pequea Valley on Wednesday, April 7. It was the Braves’ first win of the season after dropping the opener 3-2 at Lancaster Catholic eight days earlier. “It was a better showing of who we are - very athletic and talented,” said Doug High, the PV head coach. “ We are a young team - only two starting seniors in the lineup.” Sarah Arment, one of those young players, contributed nicely to the offense. The sophomore went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, three runs batted in and three stolen bases. Emily Ammon had a two-run triple. Shania Smoker, another sophomore, had a bases-loaded single to drive in one run. She also scored one. The biggest inning was the fourth when the Braves plated seven runs. Pequea sent 11 batters to the plate. “Pretty much it was a team effort,” said High. “This was a huge win - it shows who we truly are. This win was a great morale booster for our team.” The final line was 12 runs on nine hits and only one error for the Braves. Annville scored one on three hits.
“Olivia Ammon had 10 strikeouts in five innings,” High pointed out. Olivia is the lone pitcher on the varsity squad with freshman Madilynn Hassis holding down the pitching duties for junior varsity. “I’ve been in this situation before with Pequea Valley,” High said, referring to the one pitcher roster. “Hopefully we stay healthy.” TENNIS In a non-league tennis match at Lampeter-Strasburg, Pequea Valley prevailed 7-0 as Brady Burns and Josh Jarvis were among the players posting team points in both singles and doubles competition. The match opened with what turned out to be an exciting battle at number one doubles. Jazae Itegi and Wade Stoltzfus managed to finally edge Andrew Reidenbaugh and Kyle Turner 9-8. Burns and Jarvis teamed up for an 8-3 win at number two doubles while Nehemiah Glick and Samuel Arena were 8-4 winners at the third doubles. Glick was part of an intense set in the number one doubles, defeating Turner 7-5 and claiming the team point with a 6-3 win. Stoltzfus (6-1, 6-1) Jarvis (6-2, 6-2) and Burns (6-0, 6-0) were straight set winners as well, taking the next three singles matches.

should be kept closed. Bedding should be washed in hot water. Floors should be vacuumed and cleaned frequently. High efficiency filters should be used and changed frequently. Mattress and pillow covers are recommended. Additional allergy tips include using a saline solution containing water and iodized salt to flush mucus from the nose. Staying hydrated may help thin mucus in the chest and ease symptoms. Steam from a warm shower or bath may loosen mucus and open airways. Tissues with aloe or lotion are recommended to help ease any irritation of the nose caused by frequent noseblowing. Using a humidifier in the home to increase moisture in the air can make it easier to breathe.

Some ideas include staying indoors when the pollen count is high such as on dry, windy days and going outside after a rain, which helps clear pollen from the air. Delegating gardening chores like lawn mowing and pulling weeds is a good idea, but if doing outside chores, wearing a mask is a good option. After spending time outside, taking a shower rinses pollen from skin and hair. Putting on clean clothes after being outdoors can reduce exposure to pollen, too. Allergy sufferers may consider starting to take overthe-counter antihistamines when high pollen counts are forecasted even before symptoms begin. Air conditioning should be used in the house and in vehicles, and windows

Spring has arrived, and so has spring allergy season. Tree pollen is the biggest cause of spring allergies, according to Patient First. Seasonal allergy symptoms may be mild at first and lead to more severe reactions. Allergy symptoms often include nasal congestion; runny nose; itchy nose; itchy, watery eyes; and sneezing. Patient First has posted suggestions for managing spring allergies. Over-the-counter remedies help some people when pollen causes minor allergic symptoms. People with more severe reactions may need to seek stronger treatment from a health care provider. Pollenrelated symptoms may also be reduced by changing one’s routine.

iCare from pg 7 The May 28 fundraiser, which will be designed to appeal to members of the Plain community, will include an a capella concert, a banquet, and guest speaker Daniel Beiler, who spent two years in Iraq working with refugees and local government officials. To become an iCare sponsor or purchase tickets, which are necessary to attend the May 28 event, email admin@blessingsofhope.com or call 717-824-1227. Organizers described the May 29 event as a cross between a fair and a mud sale. Both 5K and 10K runs will be held beginning at 8 a.m., and a volleyball tournament will take place during the day. More information on registering for these competitions may be found at www.blessingsofhope.com. Four different auctions will take place during the day, and food items will be available for purchase for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a drive-through food option. In the evening, a bydonation concert will be held. Blessings of Hope was started in 2006, when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that was being wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. Eventually, the ministry developed relationships with more than 80 food producers and began acting as a bank to collect and redistribute food to pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries, along with Hands of Hope food box distributions.
