PVHS Introduces CORE Academy By Ann Mead Ash

Arlen Mummau, retiring administrator of Pequea Valley High School, was concerned that the school was not adequately preparing students for life after graduation. “Around 35% of our learners are going to a four-year college,” said Mummau. “But what are we doing for the (rest)? We are failing them (because) we know seven of 10 jobs in the marketplace are skilled labor jobs, but we aren’t producing the workers.” Beginning with the 2019 fall semester, Mummau was leading a group of teachers in a program to change that. CORE Academy (CORE stands for Career Occupation Relative Education) began serving incoming freshman students with a program that focuses on skill development while also offering integrated instruction in math, science, social studies, and English. The

current curriculum is being led by technology teachers Rob King and Josiah Moon. Tara Reed teaches English, Amy Shay teaches science, Lauren Brooks teaches math, and Janine Snyder handles social studies instruction. Currently, CORE includes 15 freshman students interested in skills-related fields in a project-driven program that brings in teachers from other areas in unique ways. The first project the students took part in was designing the logo for the program. In addition to using graphic design skills, students were required to write and prepare oral presentations about the logos they developed. Next, the students built sheds, with Brooks teaching them the math necessary to cut the wood to the right lengths and Shay discussing different types of woods and which are best for different building needs. Snyder brought in lessons on

architecture in different time periods. Mummau explained that the CORE curriculum was designed to mimic a startup business. “We tried to operate this whole program as if it was a company starting with nothing,” he said, noting that the room was nearly empty at the start of the year. “The place to hang the tools was designed and developed by them,” said Mummau, who added that the students have been divided up for projects so they will learn teamwork. The sheds and other projects they build will be graded based on how well they are completed and how they sell. During the initial phase of the program, the students are learning about electricity and plumbing. As sophomores, students will be exposed to horticulture; hydro power, solar power, and wind energy; and engine work. As juniors, they will still have CORE classes in the building, but they See CORE Academy pg 8

Race Against Racism Goes Virtual The Race Against Racism, a fundraiser of the YWCA Lancaster that is believed to be the longest-running consecutive race against racism in the

country, announced on March 20 that the event will transition to a virtual race for 2020. The change is in alignment with guidelines from CDC health and government officials outlined to deal with the COVID19 crisis and to prioritize the health and safety of runners and others. “Our mission must go on,” said Stacie Blake, chief executive officer of the YWCA Lancaster. “We are excited to provide a positive opportunity for our community to persevere and unite together virtually to take a stand against racism.” As a virtual race, the event See Race Against Racism pg 2

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn’t felt the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and one of the areas experiencing a massive adjustment is the education system. Public school, private school, student, teacher, parent - no one is exempt from the far-reaching repercussions after a statewide mandate closed schools in mid-March. School administrative teams across Lancaster County have had to adjust quickly, all while keeping the safety of students and the community at the forefront of their decisions. School districts countywide have ramped up their online communication portals, offering educational resources, food assistance information, answers to frequently asked questions, and critical updates. While the game plan moving forward varies by educational See Education pg 4

The new CORE Academy offered its first class to students at Pequea Valley High School in the fall of 2019. The academy combines applications of core subjects with instruction in a variety of disciplines to help students prepare for further training and employment after graduation.

Since Humanity Fest cannot be held this year, organizers hope that virtual racers will encourage each other by posting photos and videos experiences on social media. They may search for “Race Against Racism” on Facebook and @RARLancaster on Instagram. People should utilize the hashtags #RARLancaster and #VirtualRace. “We can’t wait to see your creative videos and photos of how you are running your race,” said Blake. The YWCA is planning to hold a community celebration on a date that has not been determined. Participants in the virtual race will be able to pick up their race swag at that event. Funds raised by the event are used to address racism issues, through efforts such as the YWCA Lancaster’s Social Justice and Advocacy programs, as well as supporting those who seek peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Blake said that she is grateful to the Lancaster community for rallying around the event. “We thank our generous sponsors and supporters for standing with us during this unprecedented time,” she noted. The Lancaster YWCA has been a fixture in Lancaster since 1889. The organization provides services to help empower women, and it is also dedicated to eliminating racism and promoting peace, justice, and freedom. “Abstract Spectrum,” 16-yearold Joseph James Roach’s first solo show, has been rescheduled. Originally set to open with a First Friday reception on April 3, the exhibit will now be unveiled at a reception on Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. The exhibit will continue throughout August. It was originally scheduled for April as April is Autism Awareness Month. Joseph, who has autism, struggled at school, trying to find his niche. In eighth grade, his art teacher Julia Hibshman at Manheim Central Middle School gave him greater freedom to express himself in art. What were at first simply scribbles soon developed into intricate and eye-catching abstract art pieces with the encouragement of Hibshman. A prolific artist, Joseph’s work grew rapidly into

in March, suddenly her fifthgrade, third-grade, and kindergarten students joined her and their youngest sibling at home. Tapping into her elementary education background, Eaby has implemented online learning initiatives and incorporated some of her own teaching strategies to keep her children engaged and productive. “I’m trying to be really creative with activities for the kids to do together and also trying to keep our days scheduled so that they know what to expect,” elaborated Eaby, whose husband had also joined the picture by working from home. “We’ve made newspapers, art projects, and sewing, baking, and science experiments. Manheim Township has sent out resources for parents to engage in, which are not mandatory but extremely helpful,” she added. Another creative outlet for communication has gathered momentum, as students nationwide have taken their artistic skills outside to “Chalk the Walk.” The initiative includes covering sidewalks with uplifting messages and artwork to encourage those who pass by. Citizens have also rallied in an effort to minimize the physical distance and connect generations by organizing art and card collections that comply with sanitation protocols. also enacted measures to move toward online delivery, directing faculty to connect with families via applications such as Zoom, a virtual conferencing application, and establishing office hours to keep communication flowing. Addressing parents and students via the school’s website, CV superintendent Dr. David Zuilkoski stated, “I’ve always believed that a successful educational experience must include the schools, the family, and the community. I can say without question that CV should be proud of the way that all three parts have come together in this time of crisis.” “Neither our teachers nor our students signed up for this type of learning, so we will maintain our growth mindset and appreciate a ‘yet’ mentality,” Zuilkoski continued. “Throughout this process, all teachers will be providing feedback to ensure a more personalized learning (experience) occurs.” In a show of solidarity, many communities have banded together to partner with schools and churches to provide pickup locations for bagged lunches for students. Local libraries have kickstarted operations that include sanitizing methods and drive-through services for books and resources. Countless organizations with online platforms are also stepping up to do their part, providing tutorials, virtual museum and zoo tours, and other educational resources free of charge. For parents, this new time of social distancing outside the home creates a uniquely opposite effect inside the home, as they must mesh the logistics of multiple adults working from home, siblings having extensive time to interact only with each other, and numerous demands for inhome technology. enrichment activities. The LCCS executive team shared its intent in a press release, stating, “LCCS is committed to providing a high-quality academic experience even during this time of crisis.” The statement went on to explain, “The school day is set up to be asynchronistic so that students can learn and study at their own pace in a schedule that meets the needs of their families.” The school utilizes an online hub called Community Corner to provide a central location for communication and interaction. Hempfield School District also geared up to deliver online learning, with March 30 as its launch date. By implementing programs that were already in place within its system, the district hoped to expedite the process while expanding its format to incorporate a broader range of online options. “At Hempfield we have an application called Schoology, which allows teachers to post updates, assignments, discussions, videos, assessments, and more,” explained secondary teacher Ryan Martin, noting that the district planned to transition to using the application virtually. “I believe strongly in the power of relationships in the school setting. institution, concern for the welfare of students presides across the board. For Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), a private institution in Elizabethtown, a brickand-mortar shutdown has caused education to morph into a completely different format. However, it hasn’t changed the school’s mission to “Pursue Christ and Prepare Students,” which the administration and faculty are committed to fulfilling. Guided by an administrative team, the MCCS faculty members have spent countless hours transitioning their traditional classroom format into an online delivery. The new initiative rolled out effective March 23, allowing the entire student body to continue coursework online. “We feel it is important to challenge our students to keep moving academically,” explained MCCS superintendent Dr. Daniel Sheard. “We look at this as a new way to build student-teacher relationships.” Though the plan of action would be re-evaluated in the event the school closure mandate is lifted, MCCS faculty members are prepared to complete the duration of the year via the new remote delivery if necessary. Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) also went live with its online format on March 23, providing assigned coursework for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in five core courses along with optional

senior communities that are currently unable to receive visitors. After the initial shock of school closures and social restrictions reverberated through local communities, the ripple effect of postponed sports programs, school trips, concerts, and other events has been felt far and wide. These aftershocks may not be over yet, which is why schools are taking every effort to support their students, families, and communities as needs arise. “Educators, students, coaches, and families are all grieving missed opportunities,” explained Erica Hershock, who holds a Master of Education and has 15 years of experience in school counseling. “Leaders have quickly surveyed the current situation; staff are working around the clock to put flexible action plans in place. They are actively researching and implementing creative and equitable ways to connect and instruct all students.” For those in education, the objectives haven’t changed even if the methodology has undergone drastic adjustments. Community members can be assured that those at the heart of education are as committed as ever to finding the best possible solutions in this uncharted territory.

For many students and families, the transition out of the school classroom and into the home – all day, every day – has not been effortless. However, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) students, faculty, and families said they felt atypically prepared to continue education remotely. That is because LMS adopted a work-from-home Flexible Instruction Days (FID) educational framework last year, designed specifically for situations where students could not be in the classroom, such as inclement weather. Protecting the health of our customers and employees is our primary concern. In-Store Prescription Drop-Off and Pick-Up will not be available until after COVID-19 is controlled. R057728

The Giant Company recently announced several updates as part of its efforts to continue meeting the needs of its customers and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, including modified hours intended to help care for older members of the community. In order to allow more time for team members to sanitize, unload deliveries, stock shelves, and better serve customers throughout the day, all store hours were adjusted to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. beginning on March 19 until further notice. Effective March 19, all Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are open from 6 to 7 a.m. to customers who are age 60 and older only. This age group is especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, according to the CDC. The schedule change will allow customers in this age category to shop in a less crowded environment, which enables social distancing. They will also shop prior to any other customers entering. Although team members will not request ID for entry, the company asks its customers to respect the purpose of the early opening. Beginning immediately, Giant is placing a limit of two items on key categories throughout the store, including paper goods and disinfectant products. Effective March 25, all in-store pharmacies will open at 6 a.m. every Wednesday until further notice to accommodate older and immunocompromised members of the community. This change aligns with the modified store hours of 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. daily announced to service customers who are age 60 and older and for those who are immunocompromised. For the hours of the pharmacy at local stores, readers may visit the Giant or Martin’s websites. Senior customers can now pick up their prescriptions using the Giant Direct or Martin’s Direct parking spaces at their local store. The prescriptions will need to be paid for (by credit card) in advance by calling the pharmacy. Once the customer arrives at the store, they call the pharmacy regarding their prescription pickup. A pharmacy team member will then deliver the prescriptions to the customer’s vehicle, verifying the customer’s information while having them sign in order to receive. For senior customers who do not wish to come into the store, The Giant Company is now offering UPS mailing of prescriptions. The prescriptions will need to be paid for (by credit card) in advance by calling the local Giant or Martin’s pharmacy. The prescription will arrive in two business days and there will be no

CORE Academy from pg 1 will also take classes that hone in on an area where they have a special interest, such as graphic arts, welding, or building construction. By senior year, they will be prepared to study off campus, possibly at a community or technical college or at the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. King noted that some students have already begun to focus on an area they might like to pursue. “We have one student who thinks she might want to be an electrician,” he said, noting that the student exhibited characteristics that will help her succeed in that area. “She is meticulous and precise and logical,” he said. Brooks said she has seen students respond to the way math is utilized in CORE. “I think (some students) don’t like to learn math because it’s not applicable to what they will be doing in the real world,” she said. “Our goal

with this is to get these students learning math they will use on a daily basis.” Mummau added that there is more to the program than skills and teamwork. “We also want to teach service,” he said. “We want to teach them about character and integrity.” To fulfill that goal, the students have made cornhole games that were given to area families as Christmas gifts and worked to help complete a new homeless housing area at The Factory Ministries in Paradise. Brooks noted she has seen significant changes in students’ abilities since the start of school. “On day one, (some) didn’t know how to run the saw,” she said, noting that the sheds took months to build because the students were new learners. “But in the (future), we will build another one, and I bet it will be done in a week,” she said with a grin.

Camp Invention Program Posted Camp Invention, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment camp program, will be offered at three area locations. The camp will be held at Delta Peach-Bottom Elementary School the week of Monday, June 15, through Friday, June 19; at Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 the week of Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17; and at Cornwall Elementary School the week of Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17. A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in kindergarten through grade six to find their “inner inventor” by learning the process of innovation. Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning; builds confidence, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness, and problemsolving skills; and encourages entrepreneurship - in a fun and engaging environment. Each year, the program features a new curriculum inspired by some of the nation’s most world-changing inventors - the NIHF inductees. This year’s “Elevate” curriculum features several video challenges from the inductees encouraging children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness. At the end of the program, each camper will bring home a robot. To learn more about the curriculum, readers may visit h t t p s : / / w w w. i n v e n t . o r g / programs/camp-invention.
