This year’s ride will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 11, beginning at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville. about 500 postcards from many of the exhibits,” Snyder said. “She was there when the king and queen (of England) visited in June of ’39.” Snyder’s mother passed away in 2013, but Snyder had taken an interest well before that in the items she had saved, along with additional material given to him by his uncle George Shenk. “For about 30 years I’ve been building on that collection, and now have uniforms, banners, posters, salt and pepper shakers, etc., etc. and a couple of file drawers just of paper from that fair. The postcard pile has grown to about 1,200,” he said. “Obviously I inherited a collecting gene from my mom.” Snyder has assembled a colorful PowerPoint presentation that he will give at the historical society meeting, plus he plans to bring a selection of World’s Fair items for display. The program is open to all at no charge. “It’s a very visual program; I have about 600 images so far,” Snyder said. Snyder’s presentation is the latest in the historical society’s regular practice of providing informational presentations related to local history and history-related topics. For more information about the society, readers may call 717-442-4071.

The symbol of the fair was the trylon and perisphere - two futuristic structures built for the fair that were immediately identifiable. Inside the huge ball-shaped perisphere was the “world of tomorrow,” where attendees could go around on a ride to see the projected world of 1960. Snyder believes his favorite area of the fair would have been the amusement zone. “There’s all the fun stuff. Robert Ripley’s ‘Believe It or Not’ had a pavilion, there were animal exhibits, and it was such a tribute to commerce with everything that was being sold,” he said. Looking back at the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair also offers a glimpse of the world of 1939, when America was coming out of the Great Depression and World War II was on the horizon. “The war broke out (in Europe) while the fair was on,” Snyder said. Snyder’s connection to the New York World’s Fair of 193940 came through his mother, Betty Shenk, who grew up in Flushing, N.Y., near the World’s Fair. It opened in April, 80 years ago, when she was 15 years old. “She went often, over 30 times, (because local schools would have discount tickets) and collected

centuries in a variety of locations, but the 1939-40 World’s Fair in New York City stands out to Snyder. “New York was probably the largest - 45 million people attended that fair over the twoyear season, which was equivalent to a third of the U.S. population at the time,” Snyder said. The theme for Snyder’s presentation will be “A Trip Back to the World of the Future.” Through photo and postcard images, he will take viewers back 80 years to see what people of the time envisioned for their future. “‘The World of the Future’ was the subtitle of the fair,” Snyder noted. The New York World’s Fair was the debut site for television, with President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s address at the opening of the fair as a first broadcast. Other products made their first large public appearance at the fair, including nylons, electric razors, and air conditioning. In addition to product displays, there was entertainment, including an aquacade, musical exhibitions, live broadcasts of radio shows, and a show of “trains from 100 years of history” with real trains going by.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania recently announced William Cole as Volunteer of the Year for 2019. Cole was selected for the honor by the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s board of directors from among the museum’s corps of more than 150 active volunteers. An eight-year member of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, he originally picked up a volunteer application while he was visiting the museum. With railroading as his hobby, Cole recalled that it seemed a perfect fit. Cole reveals that he has been a model railroader since age 5 when he received a Lionel train for
Christmas, and he has had layouts in both O gauge and HO gauge. He currently has a four-by-eight-foot O-scale layout that he maintains in his home. He describes it as electronics-heavy and automated for the 21st century. Cole also previously enjoyed building computers in the devices’ early days. Cole generally volunteers in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania archives one day a week, scanning and cataloging photo collections and preparing documents and photos for sale. He also works one day a week on the Pennsylvania Landscapes operating HO model train layout in Stewart Junction railway education center,
rewiring and maintaining the layout and installing DCC decoders in locomotives. Cole will be formally recognized as the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s Volunteer of the Year by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission at a ceremony in Harrisburg on Saturday, April 27. He will also be honored during the museum’s annual Members Day banquet at The Willows at Historic Strasburg on Saturday, Sept. 28. Individuals who would like to learn about the museum’s volunteer opportunities are invited to contact volunteer/program coordinator Elizabeth Myers at 717-687-8628. The Ceiling’s The Limit: 12 Ways To Maximize Vertical Space Who hasn’t, at one point in their lives, lamented a lack of space and organization at home? A lifetime’s worth of items have to be kept somewhere, and without the right organizational strategy, clutter can quickly take over. One way to maximize available storage is by tapping into the storage potential of vertical space. Here are some ideas to put vertical and other less-utilized areas to work: 1. Hang wire or plastic file organizers on the inside of kitchen cabinets to easily store cookie sheets, trays, and cutting boards. 2. Save on counter or cabinet space with hanging spice racks. These can be hung directly on walls or on the inside of cabinet doors.
3. Stack all the stuff you can, including washers and dryers, beds (with storage drawers underneath), and even stacking nesting tables. 4. Choose furniture that is tall rather than wide. This can mean swapping out a dresser in a bedroom for an armoire or vertical chest of drawers. 5. Canvas bags hung on a towel bar on a wall can keep dirty clothes wrangled until it’s time to wash them. This also eliminates clothes hampers on the floor. 6. Add a second rod or shelving to the inside of closets to create more space for clothing and other items. 7. Take kitchen cabinets all the way to the ceiling. Store lesserused items on the uppermost shelves and the items you use the most on more accessible shelves.
8 . Install a shelf over the entryway to a room to utilize this seldom-used space. Shelves also can be custom cut and placed in oddly shaped areas, such as in attic rooms under the eaves or on slanted walls. 9. Dowels or curtain rods and some fabric can be used to create slings to hold books or magazines. 10. Invest in some magnetic boards that can hold keys or notes by the front door or store knives on a kitchen wall. 11. Install two towel bars parallel to one another on the wall of a bathroom. These can hold extra toilet tissue or rolled hand towels. 12. Use rope plant hangers to store potatoes or onions near prep areas. The same plant hangers can wrangle stuffed animals and small toys in children’s rooms.

Simple Ways To Prevent Dog-Related Lawn Damage Dogs often love spending time outdoors. Dog owners with yards know that dogs benefit greatly from some exercise in the backyard. While that time might be great for dogs, it can take its toll on lawns. Dog urine and feces can adversely affect the look and health of a lush green lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advice to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns. In addition to urine damage, dogs can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident until spring. Furry friends may also get into areas like gardens where they wreak additional havoc.
Pet owners who want to let their dogs run free in the yard but don’t want damaged grass may be tempted to put their pooches in diapers when letting them outside, but such an approach isn’t necessary. In fact, some simple strategies can be highly effective at preventing dog-related lawn damage. Speak with a landscaper about planting new grass. Certain types of grass, such as Bermuda grass, can withstand dog damage better than others. The local climate will dictate which types of grass are likely to thrive in a given area, so speak with a professional landscaper about the viability of planting new grass. Install fencing. Pet owners with expansive yards can install fencing that allows dogs to spend time exercising outdoors without granting them access to the entire property. Large dogs will need more room than small ones, so homeowners should try to build fenced-in areas that allow
dogs to run freely and get the exercise they need to stay healthy. Work with a dog trainer. Dog trainers might be able to work with dogs so they only urinate in certain areas of the yard, greatly reducing the damage they can cause to a lawn. Trainers also might help curb digging and clawing behaviors that can damage lawns as well as gardens. Consider hardscaping. Hardscaping might be most effective for pet owners with small properties. Hardscaping does not include grass and can add visual appeal to a property while saving pet owners the headaches of dealing with dogrelated lawn damage.
Stock Up On Gardening Essentials Gardening attracts new devotees year after year. While baby boomers may spend more on gardening than any other demographic, even millennials are getting on the gardening bandwagon. A 2016 National Gardening Survey from the National Gardening Market Research Company found the average amount spent on backyard or balcony gardening projects exceeded $400 per household. More than $36 billion was spent in 2015, and the vast majority of the 6 million “newâ€? gardening households that year belonged to millennials. When it comes to outfitting a gardening shed or stocking up on supplies, gardeners will not want to be without certain key tools and gear. ¡ Digging shovel: A rounded-blade digging shovel is needed to plant shrubs and trees as well as to excavate areas in a landscape. ¡ Rake: A rake can be used to clear the ground, remove thatch and leaves from a lawn, and level soil in a garden bed. ¡ H a n d t o o l s : Hand tools, such as a hand fork and trowel, are essential for small digging jobs, especially when
working with flower pots or containers. ¡ Edging spade: This flat-blade shovel is handy to have around because of its versatility. Edging spades can slice turf, edge gardens, and cut through roots. ¡ Pruners: Sharpened pruners can cut through stems and branches effortlessly. ¡ Hose: Choose a high-quality hose that is lightweight and durable, as hoses will always be necessary.

How Lawns Benefit From Aeration
Spring Cleaning: Combat Clutter Room By Room
Compacted soil can have a dramatic effect on grass. Compacted soil blocks oxygen, water, and nutrients from reaching the root systems of the turf. That creates a lawn with weak roots, which make grass more vulnerable to disease and compromise its ability to withstand harsh weather, such as summer heat. The buildup of thatch, which is a matted layer of grass clippings and other organic debris that collects on the top of the soil, is one indicator that a lawn could benefit from aeration, a process in which the surface of the lawn is perforated to break up compacted soil and allow oxygen, water, and nutrients to reach root systems. Other signs that aeration may be necessary include patches of thin grass, brown spots, and a high concentration of clay in the soil. When faced with a lawn that could benefit from aeration, homeowners may wonder if such a task lends itself to DIY or if it is best left to professional landscapers.
As the weather transitions from cool winter weather to the balmy heat of summer, many people turn their attention to spring cleaning. In addition to cleaning windows and dusting off cobwebs, some residents elect to combat clutter and tackle reorganizational projects during the spring season. Clutter can be a major source of stress that affects how individuals feel about their spaces. Psychology Today indicates messy homes and work spaces can contribute to feelings of helplessness, anxiety, and overwhelming stress. Clutter bombards the mind with excessive stimuli, makes it more difficult to relax, and can constantly signal to the brain that work is never done. Tackling messes - no matter where they are lurking - is not a one-time project. In fact, clearing a home of clutter requires dedication and lifestyle changes. With these organizational tips and tricks, anyone can work through their home room by room and conquer clutter.
Aerating a lawn is not always easy, and typically it involves the use of one of three types of aerators: · Core aerator: A core aerator uses hollow tines to pull plugs of soil from the lawn. The plugs are left on the surface of the lawn. Homeowners can pick up the plugs or, according to the grass seed experts at Pennington, even leave them in the yard and allow them to break down. · Spike aerator: The experts at Pennington note that spike aerators employ solid, spike-like tines to poke holes in the soil. These aerators leave the spikes in the soil. Some people wear spiked aeration shoes while walking around the yard to mimic the effects of spike aerators. · Slicing aerator: According to Pennington, slicing aerators employ rotating blades that slice through thatch and down into the soil. These aerators leave the soil in the ground. Aerators can be operated manually, though professionals tend to use motorized aerators. The machines are often heavy, so homeowners should consider their health and physical ability before deciding to aerate on their own. Hiring a professional landscaper who has experience aerating may the quickest and most effective way to restore a lawn to full health.
years. Over time, failure to regularly go through belongings and thin the herd can lead to the accumulation of clutter. But clutter also can accumulate if people fail to find a place to put items. Racks for garages, organizational systems for closets, and furniture with storage capacity, such as storage ottomans, are some solutions that can help people find a place for their possessions and ensure that items can be put away and won’t become clutter.
Utilize vertical space when possible Getting items up and off the floor can maximize square footage in a home. Bookshelves, hanging wall shelves, hooks, cabinetry, built-ins, and other storage solutions that rely on walls and ceilings are simple and effective storage solutions. Unused space behind cabinet or closet doors are some additional places to store belongings. Utilizing vertical surfaces can help maximize space in small rooms. understand which techniques can improve efficiency. That means a professional job can typically be completed much more quickly than a DIY project. Even though some people think they’ll save money by painting their own homes, that’s not necessarily true. Professionals already have all the equipment necessary, while novices may need to make repeated and potentially costly trips to the hardware store for supplies. Plus, if mistakes happen, DIYers have to spend additional time and money fixing them. Safety can be another large motivator

Few things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint. And, thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. As DIY-friendly as painting can be, when attempting to paint the interior or exterior of their homes, homeowners may learn that some painting projects are best left to the professionals. Painting requires skill, patience, and a knowledge of how various paints - including finishes for particular applications - will hold up. Novice painters may do more harm than good by dripping

First Impressions: Entryways That Make A Statement Visitors’ first impressions of a home are often dictated by the home’s entryway. As one may judge a book by its cover, the same can be said about the impression that a front door and entryway can create, regardless of how accurate that impression is. Making certain changes to an entryway can go a long way toward improving curb appeal. Entryways also can set the scene for a home’s interior. Whether one chooses to be classic or bold, modern or traditional, there are various ways to quickly transform a home’s entryway. Bold front door color Color can dramatically enhance an entryway. Painting an existing door or replacing it with a more vivid option can do the trick. According to the DIY Network, some colors to consider are turquoise, yellow, red, indigo, orange, and black. The door color should complement the other shades of the home, such as those on siding and trim.
Custom walkway Guide guests right to the front door with an attractive (and safe) walkway. Stamped concrete or decorative paver blocks may fit the bill. This walkway can extend to the street or to the driveway. Contain plants Landscaping around the entryway should be neat and well-tended, as overgrown plants or shrubbery may give off an air of neglect. Container plants and carefully curated shrubs can create a neat and inviting aura. Highlight the address Make sure the home can be found easily with bold and decorative house numbers. Consider two different address signs: one illuminated and easily viewed from the curb and another closer to the front door. Utilize high-end materials The relatively small area of real estate by the front door enables homeowners to splurge on more opulent materials that
can really add a feeling of luxury. These can include colorful tiles, ornate planters, decorative wooden doors, or elaborate knobs and lighting fixtures. Add architectural details Find out which architectural elements will meld with the style of the home and then incorporate them. Moldings, columns, shutters, and trim can be considered. The entryway to a home garners a lot of attention. Homeowners can enhance their spaces with entryways that really make a statement. Boosting Curb Appeal Upgrading the front door is not the only way to make a home look more appealing to both guests and potential home buyers. There are many other projects - both big and small - that can help spruce up a home’s curb appeal. Ideas include:
-Installing new windows -Adding a patio -Repairing and painting molding, trim, and shutters -Painting garage doors -Upgrading flower boxes or mailboxes/stands -Investing in nice outdoor furniture for a patio -Replacing gutters and downspouts

Bright Ideas: Utilizing Outdoor Lighting For Attractive, Safe Homes When addressing curb appeal, homeowners may be inclined to focus on features that are easily seen from the street during the day. But what can a homeowner do to improve on his or her home’s nighttime aesthetic? Outdoor lighting is one aspect of curb appeal that is often overlooked, advise the home improvement experts at The Spruce. Proper illumination can provide homes with a warm glow and make them look beautiful after the sun has set. For example, think of how cozy and inviting neighborhoods appear during the holiday season when homes are strung with twinkling lights. Homeowners can replicate that look all year long with lighting elements. Lighting for evening hours also helps maintain a safe environment for people who are visiting the property. Illuminating walkways and doorways provides a clearly visible and safe path to and from the home. The following are a few ways to improve outdoor lighting. Focus on architectural features Outdoor lighting can focus on the external features of the
home’s architectural style. Use light to draw attention to interesting gables, dramatic roof lines, dormers, or curved entryways. Play up landscaping Stylish lighting can highlight trees, shrubs, pathways, gardens, and all of the elements of softscapes and hardscapes on a property. The lighting experts at Vernon Daniel Associates say that soft lighting can make homes feel warm and cozy. Uplighting trees or other elements can add a dramatic effect. Light up all doors Make sure that doors, both entry and garage, are properly lit for ease of entry and egress from the home. In addition to helping to ensure the safety of residents and welcome visitors, installing motion-activated lights or lights on timers can deter break-ins. Consider using home automation to control porch lights and other outdoor lights remotely, if necessary. Create entertaining areas Outdoor lighting can be used to extend the hours residents can spend outside. This is great for entertaining and can be an excellent selling point.

Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention aims to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning; build confidence, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills; and encourage entrepreneurship in a fun and engaging environment. Camp Invention will be held at three area locations. South Eastern Intermediate School, Fawn Grove, will host a camp from Monday, June 10, through Thursday, June 13. A second session will be held at Cornwall Elementary School from Monday, July 8, through Friday, July 12. Finally, a camp will be offered at Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 from Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. This year’s Supercharged curriculum features several video challenges from inductees that encourage children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness. Hands-on activities include Innovation Force, Deep Sea Mystery, Farm Tech, and DIY Orbot. Activities will range from digging up fossils and inventing island survival tools to learning how to manage a farm and reverse engineering a remote-controlled robot. At the end of the program, each camper will bring home a robot. All local Camp Invention programs are facilitated and taught by certified educators who reside and teach in the community. Pequea Valley’s softball team started its slate of Section Three and Four crossover games with a win over Elco on Monday. The 8-3 result improved the Braves’ Lancaster-Lebanon League record to 6-0. In the second inning, the Braves put up five runs after the visiting Raiders had taken an early 1-0 lead. “All year long, scoring early has been our M.O.,” head coach Doug High said. “We have been fortunate.” Pequea starter Josie Burns went three strong innings, striking out three batters and allowing only one run in picking up her second win of the season. Abby Tobelmann went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in for Pequea. Caroline Bragg was 2-for3 with two RBIs. Makenzi Dienner and Destiny Broomell each drove in a run. “We also scored two runs on passed balls,” High explained. Burns was relieved by Sarah Moore, who finished the game. “Sarah Moore had four innings of relief with five strikeouts and only one walk,” High noted. The next crossover contest was against Garden Spot and Elizabeth King. The Spartans’ ace struck out 11 batters and pitched a no-hitter in the 6-0 shutout.
“We just couldn’t put any pressure on them in this game - no hits and five errors,” High said. The Braves squandered a chance in the first inning when they had the sacks full. “That was the closest we came to scoring,” High added. “We had a few balls we hit hard - right on the button. But they were right at their fielders.” “They had a couple of walks and we had an error to load the bases,” Garden Spot coach Kim King recalled. “We played them last year at PV and we knew they were going to be tough. They were undefeated coming into this game.” The Braves fell to 7-1 overall (6-1 league) with two crossover games under their belts. “We are 1-1 so far in crossover games,” said High. “It’s possible we could go 4-3 or do even better than that.” BOYS’ TENNIS It was the Battle of the Braves on the tennis courts as Pequea Valley hosted Octorara on Monday afternoon in an L-L League match. Seniors Hunter Winey and Devon Clemmer were among the winners in a 7-0 defeat of Octorara as the PV Braves improved their league mark to 5-0 and to 11-0 overall. Clemmer and sophomore Brady

He went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Senior Dalton Temple went 2-for4 with a double and scored one of the runs Yothers drove in. Fellow senior Cam Yoder was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Winston Thomas had a pair of singles, a stolen base and two runs scored. The Spartans were led by Dylan Crossan, who went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. The Braves fell to 3-4 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League (4-4 overall) while Garden Spot improved to 5-3 (5-4 overall). It was the second crossover game for the Braves on the week. On Monday junior pitcher Jack Olonovich suffered a tough loss as the Braves came up short at Elco. Olonovich allowed only one earned run in the 3-1 loss. He struck out four and allowed only four hits in 5.1 innings. Elco starter Jude Anthony went the distance, allowing a double to Thomas and a single to Temple. Dale Stoltzfus scored the lone Pequea run.

Freddie advertised the café by producing a video that was shown to the school population. Information about the café hung in the school hallways the week of the book fair. Freddie’s efforts raised nearly $200 to help to purchase books for a student who is unable to attend school for medical reasons. Freddie was rewarded with a book of his choice in return for his efforts. Freddie also found satisfaction in the gratitude of his classmates. “It was fun, cool, and busy, and the (other students) said, ‘Thank you, Freddie,’” he noted.

When it was decided that the book fair would have a winter theme, Freddie’s hot beverages and treats seemed like a logical addition to the event. The café ran for two days of the fair during the school’s designated club time. One side of the library, where the book fair was held, was set aside for Freddie’s café and live music by the PVIS Jazz Combo.

After 18 months serving as interim co-executive directors at ASSETS, a local nonprofit focused on transforming the community through ethical business, Tina Campbell and Jonathan Coleman accepted the offer to move into a permanent co-executive directorship, effective Jan. 1. The decision came after a period of discussions with Jess King, a former ASSETS executive director of seven years and a recent congressional candidate. When King left ASSETS in the fall of 2017 to run for Congress, the board appointed Campbell and Coleman as the interim coexecutive directors. Both already
served on staff in full-time capacities - Campbell as the director of development and Coleman as the director of programs. At the beginning of this year, the ASSETS board extended permanent leadership roles to Campbell and Coleman. As co-executive directors, Campbell leads administration and all fundraising efforts, while Coleman serves as the external face of the organization and oversees the programmatic side of ASSETS. King remains involved with ASSETS as a consultant and supporter. To learn more about ASSETS, readers may visit www.assets lancaster.org or call 717-393-6089.

Volunteers Assist International Group The NiVan people of Vanuatu, located in the interior jungle regions of a tiny South Pacific island, are one of the groups supported by Friends In Action International (FIA), which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown. FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to communicate the Gospel. Last year, FIA hosted nearly 75 volunteers who served as “blue collar missionaries.” Because FIA partners with trained missionaries already on the ground, volunteers offer their life experiences and construction skills to demonstrate God’s love in tangible ways, while national pastors or missionaries share the Gospel in some of the most remote locations in the world. In 2018, FIA volunteers reached more than 200,000 people through 10 projects in six
remote locations. Their efforts provided clean water to more than 20,000 West African villagers; medical assistance to 1,200 people in the Amazon jungle; Christian radio broadcasting to more than 200,000 people in Bolivia and Brazil; community transformation projects to 1,400 Rama Cay people of Nicaragua; and discipleship training to almost 3,000 in Moldova, Papua New Guinea, and Bolivia. Paul Brosey, FIA’s project and team coordinator, recently met with Merv Breckbill from Wallto-Wall Floor Covering in Strasburg to discuss how FIA and Wall-to-Wall could partner together to impact people physically and spiritually.
