MDS Coordinates Mask Effort By Ann Mead Ash
In early April, when Larry Stoner, Region 1 operations coordinator with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS), 583 Airport Road, Lititz, learned that Bird-in-Hand Fabric, owned by Sylvan and Loraine Stoltzfus, had been
creating masks for anyone who requested one in response to the COVID-19 crisis, he was moved to involve MDS to help. “They had been making them for about two weeks out of the kindness of their hearts, and they were giving fabric and getting elastic and (wire) for the nose (to others who were making

them),” Stoner explained. Bird-in-Hand resident Manny Flaud, who is associated with the Lancaster MDS unit, knows the Stoltzfuses, and he contacted them on behalf of MDS. “(The Stoltzfuses) were overwhelmed with thousands of requests (for masks),” recalled Stoner, who noted See Mask Effort pg 5
Members of the Plain community are working with Mennonite Disaster Service to produce masks for health care workers and others in the county in need. The effort produced more than 20,000 masks in its first week.

Bryanna Still has always loved music. “I began my interest in music at a really young age,” said Bryanna. “I grew up listening to soulful old rhythm and blues and a lot of ’70s and ’80s music. Having that start really inspired me to be passionate about music.” In the fall, the Dayspring Christian Academy senior will head to Edinboro University in northern Pennsylvania to begin a double major in art and music therapy, an ambitious eight-year program that will earn her a doctorate in those subject areas. Bryanna’s journey to this point has not been likely, but her talents, love of art and music, and determination to succeed have helped her discover her potential and have influenced others, such as Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), to take notice. PA Family Travel Fair Goes Virtual
By Ann Mead Ash
When Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the third PA Family Travel Fair, realized that the 2020 fair, which was scheduled for April 18, would have to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, she was heartbroken for the more than 50 exhibitors. When she learned that all of them were committed to doing the 2021 event, she wanted to do something to help them. On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was held from May 3 to 9. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through Saturday, May 30. The virtual fair can be accessed at www. whereandwhen.com/virtual-pa -family-travel-fair or by using the QR code See PA Family Travel Fair pg 3

In 2018, Lititz resident Jennifer Martin began sharing her testimony in local churches. At New Life Fellowship in Ephrata, her testimony was recorded, and her parents, Jay and Rosene Hurst, showed the tape to their friends Drew and Cindy Metcalf, founders of We Help Children, a ministry with workers in several locations, including the Guatemala and the U.S. The organization works with children in orphanages and trains workers who serve in orphanages, among other efforts on behalf of traumatized children. Jennifer Martin (left), U.S. director for We Help Children, has worked with children in Guatemala and Haiti. In her new role with We Help Children, she will build relationships with area churches by giving her testimony and speaking about the organization.

DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash and the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon will be among the many destinations highlighted during the virtual PA Family Travel Fair, which can be accessed using the QR code found with this article or by visiting www.whereandwhen.com/virtual-pa-family-travel-fair.

PA Family Travel Fair from pg 1 Bureau and The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. One of the exciting aspects of the travel fair is that the exhibitors bring information about interesting and beautiful parts of Pennsylvania to those who attend. The virtual fair can accomplish that goal by putting the spotlight on special attractions in different areas of the state. “Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Sullivan counties are for people who really like to get away to open spaces,” noted Royal. “Worlds End State Park (in Sullivan County) is really pretty, and in Franklin County, there are beautiful vistas.” Royal added that the town of New Castle in Lawrence County is considered the fireworks capital of America because it is the home of two fireworks enterprises that trace their origins to the mid-1800s. The county is also home to a craft burger trail. Royal said that through the virtual fair, she is encouraging involvement by the whole family, including the youngest members. “We will have children’s activity pages, and there’s a downloadable crossword puzzle and some coloring pages,” Royal pointed out. “I am encouraging parents of tweens and teens to involve those children in their travel plans (as well).”

Where & When Pennsylvania may also be found by searching for “Where & When Pennsylvania” on Facebook or at @whereandwhenpa on Instagram. “Every day, we will feature a different exhibitor,” said Royal. “Each one of them will take over our social media for a day.” The first organization to take over Where & When’s social media was the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, which is spotlighting a giveaway in conjunction with the fair consisting of a weekend kayaking getaway for four. “The package includes two nights lodging, a kayaking trip, and $200 toward meals,” said Royal, who noted that a basket of Endless Mountains products will be included. Visitors to the virtual travel fair may enter to win the package at the website. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing by Friday, June 5. Lining up to take over the Where & When social media are a mix of visitors’ bureaus, historic attractions, amusement parks, museums, and all-inclusive resorts. Among them are the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania Great Outdoors, Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash, and Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. Fort Roberdeau in Altoona will also have a day manning the social media accounts. Virtual tours of areas will be available on some days as well. “We have 18 different destination marketing organizations involved,” noted Royal. “Some of those will include virtual tour links for their areas.” Among the destination marketing areas that will be part of the virtual fair are the Allegheny National Forest Visitors

Together, we can save lives. Are you in? Even as we make strides against COVID-19, it’s not time to let up. Following the proper guidelines remains critical — because that is still the most effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. • Stay home as much as you can • Practice social distancing — keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others • Wear a mask in public, covering your nose and mouth • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash hands often — for at least 20 seconds For a quicker return to the things you love, we need everyone to be in this together. For your family. For your neighbors. For our entire community.

Carol Choir, for children in second through fifth grades, is one of several performing choirs of the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL). MCCL is offering virtual auditions in May for its performing choirs and is also accepting registrations for two non-auditioned programs. The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has slated its annual spring auditions for the 2020-21 choir year, but this year, due to COVID-19, auditions are being offered virtually in May. Auditions include matching pitch, singing in tune, using head voice, maintaining a melodic line while another line is being sung, and singing one prepared piece of music. MCCL serves more than 160 singers. The performing choirs include singers in Carol Choir, grades two through five; Concert Choir, grades six through eight; and Chamber Choir, grades nine through 12. Locally-owned Dominion Pest Control, which serves the Susquehanna Valley, recently announced that its general service manager, Shawn Pettis, has become the first person to become a public health entomologist (PHE) certificate holder, a new certification offered by the Entomological Society of America (ESA). Pettis recently received his PHE certification after becoming an associate certified entomologist (ACE), which indicates that the certified person has acquired skills to identify insects and understand their biology. The PHE certificate acknowledges that the holder “studied for and passed a rigorous exam covering insects and the diseases they vector, as well as principals of integrated pest management.” In today’s world with diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease related to pests found in backyards, such as ticks and mosquitoes, Dominion is pleased

the 100 volunteers created 20,000 masks the first week. “We are calling every fabric shop in the county,” said Stoner on April 13, who had traveled to Schaefferstown for material as well as to pick up 70 rolls of quarter-inch elastic. “We are getting connected with the right people to know where to buy things we need,” he noted. By mid-April, MDS was being asked to help make clinical masks for WellSpan. “The goal is to have groups manufacture 100,000 per week for the next eight weeks starting (the week of April 13),” said Stoner, who noted that the masks, which will be used by doctors, will be used one time and then thrown away. “The pattern is a little different and the material is not fabric,” shared Stoner, who said that he believes the volunteers can manufacture 25,000 of the masks per week. Stoner is recruiting members of the Plain community to help with the mask effort, and he has also been spreading information about COVID-19 best practices. “We are trying to get the word out about wearing masks, social distancing, and washing of hands … to take this seriously,” he said. More information about the MDS response to COVID-19 may be found at https://mds. mennonite.net. Readers who are interested in learning more about the mask-making effort may call 717-823-0952.
that requests had come from the Lancaster County Prison, Red Rose Transit Authority, and Water Street Mission, along with retirement homes. “Everyone was desperate for face masks made of fabric.” Stoner noted that the sewers associated with the fabric shop had produced about 20,000 masks in the two weeks prior to MDS becoming involved in production. On April 3, a conference call with the MDS unit board was held. Initially, MDS representatives made a decision to help the fabric store cut the material for masks. “We got a pattern from WellSpan (Ephrata Community) Hospital (for an approved fabric mask),” said Stoner, who noted that specifications included the type of material to be used and the length of elastic. “ We switched to their pattern as soon as we understood that it was acceptable to the hospital for the health care workers,” said Stoner. “Word was put out on April 3 that we needed volunteers willing to cut the patterns and get (cut material) to sewers,” recalled Stoner, who noted that shortly after that the Groffdale Conference Mennonite Community began cutting and sewing face masks to assist the other sewers. Because the Groffdale community does not drive cars, MDS provided drivers to move material. “On April 7, we started cutting material and getting it to sewers,” Stoner stated, sharing that

New Director from pg 1
R058535
Drew and Cindy immediately noticed a correlation between Jennifer’s testimony and the children they help. They also saw her desire to help children who have suffered emotional traumas. “Drew felt my story tied in well with what they do,” said Jennifer. In the summer of 2018, Drew approached Jennifer about becoming the U.S. director for the ministry. Jennifer was expecting her first child, however, and she did not think the timing was right. The Metcalfs interviewed other candidates, but they kept returning to Jennifer. They contacted her again, and she and her husband, Josh, prayed about the offer. In October 2019, Jennifer accepted the position. Jennifer’s work involves continuing to share her testimony, and she looks forward to speaking in area churches about her life and the mission of We Help Children. “A life that I thought was destroyed when I was a teenager God has restored, and He speaks through me,” said Jennifer, who noted that she is ready to work on building relationships between the ministry and local churches. She said We Help Children would especially like to build relationships with Spanish churches. She will also work to help to organize fundraisers, and she will visit Guatemala twice a year. Jennifer is a certified medical assistant who has worked at Barshinger Cancer Center in Lancaster. Her connections to Guatemala began in her childhood. “I grew up going to Guatemala,” she recalled, noting that she has been there 10 times. “When I was 10, (my family) moved to Guatemala for a summer,” said Jennifer, who explained that her father was a part-time missionary when she was a child. “(Guatemala is) where my heart is.” Jennifer has also done mission work in Haiti. “I (was in) Haiti … when I was 18 for a couple months,” she said. “I loved it there. I love mission work.” In 2017, Jennifer traveled to Guatemala with Donna Delp, a member of the We Help Children board, who has her own medical-based ministry called Impacting One Life at a Time. Jennifer was there to work alongside Donna for a week as a medical assistant. During that visit, Jennifer met a teenage girl, and the two began talking through a cellphone translator app. “She had a story similar to mine, which included sexual abuse and going through a trying time of dealing with the emotions that come along with that,” said Jennifer. “We had a really deep conversation, and I shared my faith and how I came to faith.” Jennifer referred to the experience as getting a taste of what the Metcalfs do to help children. “My passion for (helping children) was lit,” she recalled. According to Jennifer, it was that encounter that made her aware of her connection to the mission of We Help Children. “I think that was a door that opened in my heart,” said Jennifer. “By sharing my testimony and raising support, (I can help them with) what they do in Guatemala (from) here (in the U.S.),” she added. Readers who are interested in asking Jennifer to speak at their church may email jennrmartin17@gmail.com. More information about We Help Children may be found by visiting www.wehelp children.org.

music program for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan 4kids.org. While it was not always easy for Bryanna to incorporate music into her life, she found ways to exercise her passion. “When I got the opportunity (I took) music in school,” recalled Bryanna, who listed violin, viola, and recorder among her first instruments. “(When there was) anything to do with hands-on music or singing or performing (offered), I was the first to sign up,” she said. Bryanna attended Price Elementary in SDoL for kindergarten and then moved to Washington Elementary for first grade, where she started playing violin. But from third through fifth grades, Bryanna did not stay in one place for long. “I bounced around in schools. I couldn’t invest myself in a music class, but I started getting instruments of my own,” she recalled, noting that her neighbors on Green Street in Lancaster offered her old instruments to try or practice on. When she was 10, Bryanna started taking violin lessons and participating in rhythm classes through SWAN. After completing a SWAN event at DoubleTree by Hilton Resort in Willow Street in 2013, Bryanna was waiting for her ride and singing along to “No One” by Alicia Keys

as it played over the lobby speaker. According to Bryanna, Vuolo heard the singing and was impressed. “Diana came over and said, ‘We’re getting you (voice) lessons.’ That’s what started my singing career,” said Bryanna. Vuolo recognized Bryanna’s intelligence as well as her talent, and SWAN helped to secure a scholarship for her to attend Dayspring Christian Academy in
summer camp, which provided 120 hours of instruction to local children. Bryanna was looking for a productive way to spend her summer, and she became a camp volunteer, assisting the teachers. After the SWAN camp ended, the teachers she had worked with suggested she be hired as a teacher for the SWAN team, and she began leading group lessons at Price and Lafayette elementary schools. Vuolo noted that the teachers were acutely aware of Bryanna’s character and skill. “Her ability to work with traumatized children and their behavioral and scholastic failures convinced me she will indeed be a great music and art therapist someday,” said Vuolo. Bryanna credits her father, Clifford Still, with helping her to develop her interest in art. Clifford was incarcerated most of Bryanna’s life, and he is now deceased. “My dad would send me letters with drawings, or he would ask me to draw something and send it back. That is how I connected with my father,” Bryanna recalled. “I couldn’t sing to my dad, but I could draw for him, and I wanted to practice my art and get better at it. I wanted my art to be an expression of who I was and to really echo my goals in life.” Looking ahead, Vuolo believes Bryanna’s past will affect her future in positive ways. “She is a woman of faith and has chosen to … direct the pain of her life to help others,” Vuolo said. “I have witnessed her tremendous successes such as the many times that she has stepped up ... front of audiences to not only perform, but to be an ambassador and spokesperson for the many children affected by parental incarceration and trauma. Her love for others fuels that bravery.”

Mountville. Vuolo recalled that Bryanna’s grandmother, with whom she had been living, died in 2013 shortly before Bryanna was scheduled to sing the national anthem on the pitcher’s mound of the Barnstormers’ home stadium. The 11year-old bravely completed the task and six months later soloed with the Dayspring Honors Choir in front of 2,500 people at the school’s Remember America Speaker Series event featuring Dr. Ben Carson.
