Third Spring Fling Planned At PVHS By Ann Mead Ash

“The night is free except for food,” said Amanda Howe, who is advising the student committee organizing the 2019 Pequea Valley Education Foundation (PVEF) Spring Fling. “Any funds that are made are used to help fund next year’s Spring Fling,” she added. According to Grace Martin, one of the student coordinators of Spring Fling, the purpose of the event is to raise awareness and foster goodwill between the school and the Pequea Valley area. “The ultimate goal of Spring Fling is to bring the community together,” Martin said. “We want to bring the community to our school and for our school to be involved in the community.” The third annual PVEF Spring Fling will be held at Pequea Valley High School (PVHS), 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Friday, May 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. The

family-oriented event will include a chicken barbecue, local food vendors, free carnival games, a dunk tank, and a 75-foot inflatable obstacle course for children. Local vendors selling soft pretzels and giving away ice cream will be located in the parking lot at the front of the building. Nominally priced meal deals will be sold at the football stadium concession stand. Chicken barbecue dinners will be available for pickup from 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. or until the chicken is sold out. Each dinner will include chicken, a roll, a baked potato, a beverage, and dessert. Buckets of five pieces of chicken will be available for purchase as well. Martin noted that as in the past, school clubs and local businesses, along with a few area churches, will set up displays and carnival games on tables in the school football stadium. Fisher Foundation, a private foundation located in Green Farms, Conn. The grant, totaling $5,500, will allow the Lancaster Public Library to distribute hundreds of vouchers to teachers in Lancaster city. Teachers use the vouchers to purchase thousands of books and other materials to enrich their classroom libraries. Teachers may redeem their vouchers at the Lancaster Public Library’s three annual book sales and the library’s two bookstore locations, all operated by the Friends of the Lancaster Public Library.

In 2018, with the foundation’s support, Lancaster Public Library provided $4,810 in complimentary books to teachers in the School District of Lancaster and to Head Start teachers with classrooms in Lancaster city. “Masquerade Suite” was written in 1941 for a play with the same name created by Russian poet and playwright Mikhail Lermontov. Despite the play having a tragic theme, the waltz is particularly spirited. Peck was a composer from Detroit, Mich., who was heavily influenced by the soul music being played in the city in the 1950s. A musician from a very early age, Peck graduated from the University of Michigan with a doctorate in composition in 1972. He went on to be a professor at prestigious universities, including the Eastman School of Music. In his later years, he left teaching to pursue his passion - advocating for an end to world hunger. “The Glory and the Grandeur” is one of his most well-known pieces and is a work of Americana. The percussion section is in the spotlight, as a trio of percussion soloists plays 110 individual percussion instruments. Shostakovich was 19 when he began composing music. His career spanned a timeframe similar to the reign of Stalin, and artists of this era were severely punished, even executed, if their craft was perceived as going against the views and parameters set forth by the Communist

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will present “Shostakovich Triumphant,” the final concert of its 72nd season, on Saturday, May 18, at the Winter Center in Millersville. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will present “Shostakovich Triumphant,” the group’s sixth and final concert of its 72nd season, on Saturday, May 18, at the Winter Center at Millersville University at 3 and 8 p.m. The Winter Center is located at 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The concert will include the Aram Khachaturian’s “Waltz” from the “Masquerade Suite,” Russell Peck’s “The Glory and the Grandeur” and Dimitri Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Khachaturian is considered one of the leading Soviet composers and the most well-known Armenian composer of the 20th century. He was born in 1903 to poor Armenian parents in present-day Georgia and grew up with little formal music training until age 18 when he enrolled in the Gnessin Musical Institute. He studied cello, composition and biology, and he was awarded many prestigious awards and privileges for his compositions, which predominantly exhibited folk Armenian flavors. Khachaturian was known as one of the “three titans of Soviet music,” along with Prokofiev and Shostakovich. His works span many genres, including concertos, symphonies, ballets and music for film, which can still be regularly heard today. The “Waltz” from the

Party. Shostakovich’s opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” received public criticism from Stalin, causing Shostakovich to fear his career, and even his life, would end. Shostakovich pressed on with composing, and about a year after the Stalin criticism, he debuted a new work, his Symphony No. 5. Reflecting a much more conservative approach than his previous works, the symphony met with approval. A turning point in Shostakovich’s career, the premier of the Fifth Symphony reportedly had a standing ovation that lasted over 30 minutes. Lancaster-area students will present “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” at Lancaster Bible College on May 18 and 19. (students) learn to be supportive of one another … and to see each student rise to the challenge.” Servant Stage’s newest show will be performed in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, at 3 and 7 p.m. each day. The show has also been slated to be performed during May at several area retirement communities, including Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Garden Spot Village, Luther Acres, and Calvary Fellowship Homes. More than 80 students tried out to be part of the Servant Stage 2019 season, and Calderon believes the turnout was due to the many young people who were interested in the musical revue that he named “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” “It’s a revue of anything you would want

to hear when you put your quarter in the jukebox,” explained Calderon. “There’s a lot of variation,” he stated, adding that “Wild Thing,” “Footloose,” and “Do You Love Me?” will be included, along with songs by New Kids on the Block and music from the Broadway hit “Hamilton.” Calderon endeavors to add depth to each number to give audiences more than song and dance. “We find little stories within each song,” he said. “It’s acting first. The song was written for a reason, so let’s try to tell a story within one song.” The intensive rehearsal process gave the cast members only a week to become familiar with the songs in the show before beginning rehearsals on March 24. “We meet each person where they are and push them a little farther in their training,” said Calderon. “The talent is incredible, and I am just thrilled at what they have been able to accomplish in such a short time.” Students who are taking part in the show are responding to the technique. “I grew up doing dance and theater separately,” said Mackenzie Neff. “Getting to do theater with dancing is kind of a dream. It helps all of us stretch ourselves.” “It’s really challenging,” noted Sydney Norgaard, who wanted to take part in the show after seeing

her brother, Brayden, perform in last year’s revue. “Once we’re able to (perform) the number, it is satisfying. Teamwork plays a role in that.” Mackenzie is enjoying watching that process unfold as opening night approaches. “It’s overwhelming to see all the talent coming together creating this,” she said. “Watching everyone come together as a team supporting and challenging each other makes us more independent as performers.” Kolby Colmary, a veteran of several Servant Stage shows, noted that he loves that the show goes to nursing homes to reach people who cannot come to the theater. Under Calderon’s direction, the students have become acutely aware of how audiences respond to them. “You have to learn how to adapt how you’re interacting to reach every audience,” explained Isabel Subacz, who serves as dance captain for the show. Brayden agreed, saying, “It’s so fun to see the audience’s faces light up when they recognize the music and sing along.” Performances are open to the public on a pay-what-youwill basis. L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment, with three locations in Lancaster and Mechanicsburg, is celebrating its 87th anniversary. In 1932, Lester H. Brubaker opened a store providing the sales and service of farm equipment in Strasburg. At that time, the only appliances offered were large International freezers used mostly by farmers. In 1960, Donald H. Frank joined the sales and parts department at L.H. Brubaker. Shortly thereafter, Lester permitted General Electric (GE) to display appliances in the showroom. The first year L.H. Brubaker offered appliances, only 90 sold, but those sales were thanks to Donald. Considering appliance sales not to be a good business decision, Lester informed GE that he had decided to get out of the appliance business. GE countered with a compliment, saying that the manufacturer never liked to end business relationships with a reputable company that paid its bills on time, and it requested that a few pieces be displayed in a corner of the showroom and that Donald be allowed to sell them with the tractors and lawn mowers. Lester agreed. That year, Donald sold 295 pieces, and the following year saw sales of 525 appliances. The sales numbers continued to climb as years went by. In 1972, Donald and his wife, Elnora, bought L.H. Brubaker from Lester, and it became solely an appliance store. Counting the two Franks, the store had 11 employees. The following year, Donald’s oldest son, Donald L. Frank Sr., joined the family business. In the fall of 1974, L.H. Brubaker moved into a new store that sat beside the original location on Strasburg Pike. The facility at 340 Strasburg Pike, Lancaster, continues to be the corporate headquarters and

main showroom. The next several decades saw notable expansion of the business. Water treatment products and service were added in 1985. Showrooms were opened at 5303 E. Trindle Road, Mechanicsburg, in 2004 and across from Park City at 896L Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, in 2012. Across the three stores, 72 employees currently work for L.H. Brubaker, selling and servicing an extensive selection of high-end, builtin, and professional-quality kitchen appliances from Wolf, Sub-Zero, Thermador, Bosch, and Bertazzoni. Appliances in a range of price points are available from GE, Samsung, Frigidaire, and KitchenAid. L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment aims to be a one-stop shop with the most brands in the tri-state area. “Eighty-seven years later, we are excited to be celebrating what Lester H. Brubaker started,” said Donald L. Frank Sr., who is the business’ sole owner. “Now with the third generation of Franks working within the company, we are committed to continuing the longstanding tradition of L.H. Brubaker. Our customers tell us that it is our professional staff that sets us apart.” Donald Sr. noted that knowledgeable sales consultants will help customers pick the appliance or water treatment option that is right for their needs and their budgets, and the consultants will refrain from high-pressure sales tactics. “And it doesn’t stop there,” he continued. “We have our own professional installation teams for both appliances and water treatment. Every appliance purchase is backed by our own factory-trained installation and courteous service specialists.”

Members of the public are invited to celebrate with the Franks and the employees of L.H. Brubaker during an anniversary event that will be held from Wednesday, May 15, to Saturday, May 25. Readers may see the ad in this paper for special savings and offers. every two years. He said that the Virginia Beach location is popular with schools in states along the Eastern Seaboard and that schools in New York, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and other Southern states were represented. “Because of the location, (the competition) attracts schools from north and south and is usually pretty competitive,” said Bankert. Although the main focus was on the competition, the chamber singers group was able to visit area attractions during the trip. “We stayed in Williamsburg … and (we) went to Busch Gardens,” said Bankert, who added that the students also visited the Norfolk Naval Base, took a cruise on the Spirit of Norfolk, and visited the local aquarium and the beach. Some of the choir members who attended the festival noted that the time spent outside the festival was rewarding as well. “I think it was a good bonding experience for us,” said Sophia Weaver. “We learned new things about people as they came out of their shells.” Ryleigh Kurtz added that the group’s outlook made a difference throughout the event. “Everyone had a really positive attitude,” she said. “This group is up for anything.” When Bankert announced the results of the competition to the students on the bus as they prepared to leave, the students reacted with both excitement and emotion. “On the way home we were all super energetic,” noted Anastasi. “Then we hit an emotional stage,” added Weaver. “This being our last trip together … we got nostalgic, and that was a bonding moment.”

singers choir received the firstplace superior rating to garner the Overall Best Choir award. PVHS was the only choir to receive a superior rating of all choirs in its category. “We aimed for the superior rating,” said Bankert. “They worked hard … and the score showed (that).” In addition, a special outstanding soloist award went to Grace Martin and Sierra Anastasi. Bankert explained that the soloist award is not always given out. “The soloist award is only available if someone really stands out,” he said. The chamber singers group sang three pieces. “The Month of May” was a warm-up piece, which was not adjudicated. The second piece, called “Desh,” was a Middle Eastern song sung in syllables based on a Sanskrit language. Bankert said that the song was difficult because it involved producing overtones with percussive nonsense syllables. “They all had to sound the same, and there were a lot of technical skills (to performing the piece),” explained Bankert. The third song, “O Salutaris Hostia,” was sung in Latin and included the duet by Martin and Anastasi. “The music is all college level, and I really challenged them,” shared Bankert. “I told them they had to step up.” Chamber singers member Brenna Perring noted that the choice of difficult material and the way the group prepared may have garnered the attention of the judges. “ We chose really tough songs, and we chose to memorize them,” she said, adding that this impressed the judges. Bankert said that he tries to enter the group in a competition similar to the Festivals of Music

HAM & GREEN BEANS!

Mental Health Resources Posted May is Mental Health Month, and this initiative was started 70 years ago by Mental Health America of Lancaster County’s national organization, Mental Health America (MHA), to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of good mental health for everyone. According to the organization, a healthy lifestyle can help to prevent the onset or worsening of mental health conditions, as well as chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It can also help people recover from these conditions. Finding a balance between work and play, the ups and downs of life, and physical health and mental health can help someone on the path toward recovery. MHA Lancaster has both peer and family and child advocates to guide individuals, along with resources and educational speakers for events, workplaces or classrooms. For help finding support and mind-body lifestyle ideas or for help navigating local behavioral health services, readers may visit www.mhalancaster.org or contact 717-397-7461 or mha@mha lancaster.org.

In addition, a candy drop from a fire truck will be held. Howe said that both area and national businesses with locations in or near Pequea Valley School District have contributed items for prizes or supplies for the event. The event will be held rain or shine. In 2018, the weather was not conducive to holding Spring Fling outside and the entire event was held in the school. More than 700 community members attended. “It was still a fun atmosphere,” said Kolby Bills, one of the student coordinators. “ We improvised,” added Martin. “It was a lot of fun.” Bills said that the organizers hope this year’s event is just a little better than the previous Spring Flings held at the school. “Each year, we hope to add a bit more to make it better and different,” he noted. Readers who would like more information may visit www.pequeavalley.org and click on “Spring Fling” under the Community Partnerships tab. Braves Battle Crusaders in Section 4 Playoff by Ara Grigorian

Pequea Valley 4-3 on Thursday at Kinzers. It was the third meeting between In a one-game playoff to determine the two teams. Oddly enough, the the Section Four champion, the fact that Pequea had defeated Lancaster Catholic Crusaders edged Catholic twice in the regular season

en route to both teams finishing at 12-5 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League, the head-to-head did not figure in as a tie-breaker. “We beat them 13-4 and 3-1 - swept the season series,” head coach Doug High explained. “This was the third time we played them and it just didn’t happen. “It was my third year where we had to have a playoff [for the section title] after sweeping the season series,” he added. “One time we swept the other team and lost; the other time we were swept but won the playoff game.” The Braves scored one in the first inning and doubled that lead in the fourth. Catholic came back and tied the score and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth before Pequea tied it again, only to lose in the final frame. Pequea Valley took advantage of a pair of two-out walks in the first Photo by Mona Steinhauer inning. Maggie Johnson stroked a PV catcher Hailey Yothers comes up throwing to second base single to drive in Jossehi Castaneda, during the Braves’ nonleague battle with host Solanco who was pinch running for pitcher last Tuesday. Sarah Moore.

In the fourth Makenzi Dienner bunted for a hit, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, but was stranded there. Johnson’s double drove in Castaneda in the sixth inning after Moore again drew a walk and left for the pinch runner. “In the fourth they got a couple of runs, including a squeeze play for one of their runs,” High explained. In the fifth inning the Crusaders’ run was unearned, just as one of their fourth-inning runs. Moore had four strikeouts. She worked out of trouble in the third inning after giving up two of her five walks. “She had five walks, but two of them were intentional,” High noted. The Braves prepare for the L-L League playoffs and eventual District Three Class 3A playoffs. Coming into Thursday’s game, PV was fourth behind Delone Catholic, Littlestown and Kutztown in the district’s power rankings. “We got some kids banged up and we have to prepare for the league playoffs and districts,” said High. The Braves’ Monday night game was a 13-2 loss to Solanco on the road. “We faced Sierra Dean, who’s a good pitcher,” High said. “They also have some big hitters.”

Solanco batted around in the first inning and scored six runs. They batted around again in the third, putting five more on the board. “We almost got out of the third inning,” High said. “They had the bases loaded and hit a shot between the outfielders. Abi Tobelmann almost made a great catch.” TENNIS The boys’ tennis team did something last year’s team strived for but fell slightly short of achieving qualify for the PIAA Class AA state championships. On Thursday afternoon, the Braves faced familiar foe Lancaster Country Day in the District Three 2A title match at Hershey Racquet Club. The Cougars topped the Braves 3-2, but being the runners-up in the district qualified the Braves for states. “The top three teams go into states,” said PV head coach Eric Burns. “Conrad Weiser is in as well. They won the consolation match. “We got fourth in districts last year a tough loss to Camp Hill for the thirdplace match,” Burns continued. “But it was good experience for us. It’s hard being in it for the first time. Five of our guys were able to get that playoff experience last year. “The playoffs can be tough,” he added. “We’re not used to playing

indoors and the crowd is right on top of your court. The matches are close.” Josh Jarvis and Seth Kang of Pequea won the number two doubles, coming back from a 6-4 loss to post 7-5, 6-0 wins. The other PV team point came at third singles where Hunter Winey posted a 6-2, 6-1 win. Jonah Rebert of LCD edged Brady Burns 6-4, 6-3 in the first singles. George Markley needed a third set to defeat PV’s Devon Clemmer (6-2, 4-6, 6-1). “Both sets were very close with Brady and Jonah Rebert, who was a league and district singles champ,” Burns pointed out. “Number one doubles was also very close.” Josh Heinrich and Josh Gingerich won the first set 7-6 but lost 6-3, and 6-2 at first doubles. “We had beaten them 4-3 in the regular season,” Burns recalled “Lancaster Country Day had four losses during the season, but all against tough teams. We were undefeated at the time they played us.” Pequea Valley had kicked off the championships with a 4-0 defeat of West York at Racquet Club West one week prior to the tile match. In that first-round match, Gingerich and Heinrich won the number one doubles by a 6-1, 6-0 score. The duo of Jarvis and Kang had won 7-6 (5) in

the first set and were trailing 5-2 in the second set when victories in the singles matches determined the winning team and thus halted that doubles match. In singles play, Burns downed Augie Citrone 6-1, 6-2. Clemmer topped Jake Citrone 6-1, 6-1. Winey’s win at number three singles (6-1, 6-0) wrapped up the victory. In the semis, the second-seeded Braves faced third-seeded Conrad Weiser at Racquet Club West. The Lancaster Country Day Cougars, who entered districts as the eighth seed and had upset top-seeded Wyomissing in the opening round, went on to blank East Pennsboro 4-0 in the other semifinal match on Tuesday. Pequea’s 3-2 win featured plenty of drama, including a comeback win by Burns at number one singles.

Gingerich and Heinrich came back from a 6-4 loss to win their next two sets 7-6 (5) and 6-3 at number one doubles. Burns lost 6-1 but rebounded nicely for 6-3, 7-5 wins while Clemmer topped Jack Fitzpatrick 6-4, 6-3 at second singles. Winey was also in a classic battle, losing 6-4 and winning 6-3 before Ethan Moyer of CW claimed the third set for a team point. “There was a lot of drama in that match,” Burns agreed. “Conrad Weiser is a good team - very deep.” What the final scores don’t indicate is that in some of those critical sets that marked turning points in the match, Pequea’s athletes had to refocus and come back from a deficit. “We were in the third set, down

2-1 on number one singles and Brady pulled that off,” Burns explained. “He won 7-5 in the third. “Number one doubles was down 5-3 in the second set, but were able to win that in the tiebreaker,” continued the coach. “We were behind in that whole match. The guys kept coming back. We were able to pull that one out. Very exciting match.” BASEBALL The Pequea Valley baseball team concluded the regular season with a decisive 10-3 defeat of Lancaster Mennonite on Thursday at home. The win improved the Braves’ record to 8-9 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League and to 9-10 overall. Coming into the game, the Braves were sixth in the District Three ClassAAA power rankings, slightly behind Brandywine Heights. The seniors came through in the victory as well as junior Adryan Yothers, who started the game as the Braves’ catcher, but came in to pitch in the fourth inning, striking out 11 batters to finish for senior Austin DeForest. Blazers chipped away at the lead and cut the deficit in half. But they would not get any closer. Zach Lynch, a senior, came through with a two-run double, driving in Yothers and senior Dalton Temple.

DeForest, who drew a walk, and Lynch both scored on a two-run single by Rafael Juarez to make it 4-0. Joshua Smith’s RBI double drove in Yothers with the team’s fifth run. Smith would later score on an error

as did Loan Beegle, who was able to score on an outfield error triggered by a Dale Stoltzfus single. Yes, another senior. Dylan Knott singled home Stoltzfus with the team’s final run.

The installation of officers for 2019-20 will be conducted by Mary Peterson. The officers to be installed include Linda Gundy, president; Susie Gibbs, vice president; Jean Francis, secretary; Dottie Grove, treasurer; and Judy George, director. Reunion from pg 1 Alumni of the former Western School are invited to a reunion and lunch on Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m. at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. Western School was one of approximately a dozen one- or two-room elementary schools in Earl Township providing education to children during most of the 1900s. Western closed its doors after the 1971-72 school year after buses began taking rural students to larger, consolidated schools. Western was located on the north side of Route 23 on the west side of New Holland where there is now an empty lot next to the Sauder Chevrolet car lot. After the school closed, the building was used for a picture framing shop, a law office and other businesses until it was eventually torn down. In 2017, 29 women who attended Western School gathered for a lunch reunion. The men asked to be invited to the next reunion. Alumni are now in their late 50s or older. Participants at the upcoming reunion will be asked to pay a nominal fee for expenses in addition to buying their own lunch. There will be a presentation on the Western School history. Alumni will be invited to tell stories and share photos. Reservations are appreciated; to make reservations, readers may contact Vivian Martin Colatta at lennycolatta@comcast.net or 717-656-8887.

charge. An on-site snack bar will be open during the sale. After a successful sale last year, Mary Armstrong returned as chair of this year’s book sale. She is excited to be back at the helm and leading the volunteer effort. Armstrong believes in the book sale and its ability to provide the library with critical financial support. “Watching the community come together to support the library and its services will never grow old,” she said.
