The Factory Ministers … And Prints BY ANN MEAD ASH

actory Prints, a small printshop located in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, has its roots in the need for sustainability of The Factory Ministries, which provides a youth center and social services, including a food pantry, to the under-resourced in the Paradise community. According to executive director Adam Nagle, the organization has looked hard at assets, including the building, which is the former Paradise Elementary School, to find ways to add revenue and provide workforce development. When the ministry scrutinized expenses, it was discovered that printing for mailings and invitations was a significant expense. “We began asking what it would cost to get our own machine and would it save us money,” said Nagle. “We learned that we could, and that it would save us money.” By early 2020, the organization had married the two findings to

open Factory Prints, an entity located in the community center that offers print services and personalized service for small print jobs. Among the offerings are business cards, postcards, rack cards, booklets, and invitations. Unfortunately, the shop opened in February 2020, not long before COVID-19 restrictions closed the state in March. “It’s kind of hard to launch a print shop during a pandemic,” said Megan Rogers, who took over running the shop from Kylie Stoltzfus, who was serving as director of communications at the time. In June of 2020, Factory Prints relaunched, and by July, Rogers, who is a student at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), was transitioning into the position Stoltzfus had been filling. Rogers works as many as 30 hours a week, spending time at the shop in between classes and playing soccer for LBC. She is pleased with the work she has learned to produce, pointing out pieces she has printed for The Treasure Place in Intercourse and Servant Stage. Megan Rogers oversees operations at Factory Prints.

Musser Foundation Supports Families Of Children With Cancer BY ANN MEAD ASH

See Shelleen pg 4

When Akron resident Jeff Musser was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1999 at the age of 42, doctors prescribed several months of chemotherapy with the possibility of a bone marrow transplant following remission. “At that time, insurance didn’t cover bone marrow transplants,” recalled Musser. “A bunch of my friends got together, and they raised about $35,000 for me.”

After Musser underwent 28 months of chemotherapy, doctors at The Johns Hopkins Hospital decided not to perform the bone marrow transplant. “When I got well after two years, I had $35,000,” said Musser, who also had a heightened awareness of the situations faced by the families of children with the same type of cancer he had. “My cancer was a childhood leukemia,” he said. “For kids it’s 80% curable, but for adults it’s 20% curable.” See Musser Foundation pg 8

Jeff Musser’s experience with cancer inspired him to help families of children battling the disease.

Singer, author, and New Holland resident Shelleen Weaver runs a thrifty kitchen. “I see a recipe, and I don’t have an ingredient, so I think of what I can use instead,” said Shelleen, who turns to items she bought on sale, harvested from her garden, or purchased at roadside stands to fill the bill. But being thrifty does not keep Shelleen from being an adventurous cook. “My cooking is a cross between two motivations - how do I use this up and move it out of the freezer?’ and ‘How do I make it healthy?’”

for The Factory Ministries, and as yearbook editor, which has given her the chance to capture memories for the school. “I (created) things people can look back on 20 years down the road,” she said. Martin shared that her speech grew out of her personal experience of not being quite sure of her career path. “It was about not knowing what you want to do after high school and how that is normal and OK,” she explained. Martin said that she will work and research colleges and majors during a gap year. She noted she is thankful that PVHS offers a variety of diversified learning programs to meet student needs. She referenced the MCL (Mass Customized Learning) effort, which works to create a learning environment where each individual has opportunities to reach his or her full potential.

When Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) held its graduation ceremony at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, at 6:30 p.m. on June 1, four seniors addressed their family, friends, and fellow classmates, as well as school staff members. As president of the Class of 2021, Elli Stoltzfus had designated duties, while Brianna Ford, Marina Martin, and Nathaniel Miller wrote speeches to deliver. Stoltzfus welcomed the gathering to the ceremony and accepted the diplomas on behalf of the other 124 graduating students. In the fall, Stoltzfus plans to attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., to study business. She noted that the Pequea Valley community has been supportive of the class. “The com-

munity came together to put on a prom for us,” she said, referring to the event held recently at Kitchen Kettle Village. “The community donated that to the students, and we were able to give back to The Factory Ministries.” She also mentioned how much she appreciates PVHS teachers, who see each student as an individual. Ford’s speech was about the unpredictability of life. “I (told) the story of how I lost my dad three years ago,” she said, adding that she closed by reminding the audience to be appreciative of what they have because they never know when it will go away. In the fall, she plans to attend West Chester University to major in secondary education. While at PVHS, she has appreciated the opportunity to be part of multiple clubs. She has served as president of Aevidum, which held a food drive

noted Shelleen, who added that during COVID-19 restrictions the motivation to use items already in her freezers took over. “I have a ton of freezers,” said Shelleen, who admitted to at least five filled with everything from flour to a case of chicken drumsticks to items from the trees and vines behind the house she shares with her husband, Tom, and their three children. “We have apples, pears, grapes, blackberries, figs, pawpaws, and persimmons,” said Shelleen.

During my visit, Shelleen served Coconut Fried Chicken, using a chicken she said rated an 8 out of 10 on her healthy chicken spectrum, which is based on whether the chicken has had organic feed, well water, no antibiotics, and plenty of exercise. “I prefer a chicken that has run around,” said Shelleen, who noted that the recipe also calls for unsweetened coconut flakes, eggs, salt, and a variety of nuts. “Here are some ground almonds I had in my freezer. Pecans would be great, or you can throw in sesame seeds,” she shared, adding that she fries the coated chicken in plenty of coconut oil until it is “nice and toasty.” Find the full recipe for Shelleen’s coconut fried chicken with this article at www.townlively.com/coconut -fried-chicken. Along with the chicken, Shelleen served a healthy romaine salad, a side of peaches, and a moist chocolate sugar-free cookie made with okra that she said has no carbohydrates. “The flour is one part almond, one part coconut, and one part ground flax,” she said. Shelleen’s journey to cooking with free-range chicken and carbfree ingredients began several years ago. “I wanted to cook healthier, so it became my practice that every time I went to a health food store, I

mended a book, “Cooking with Coconut Flour” by Bruce Fife, which has become a staple of her kitchen. Shelleen is also known for her Amish delight fruit salad, so named because of its popularity in the Plain community. The recipe is available to those who register at www.shelleenweaver.com.

Miller based his speech on a friend who took the time to get to know him, noting that the person changed Miller’s life “just by doing small things and being kind.” He focused on how simple kindnesses can touch the lives of others in profound ways. In the fall, he will attend Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C. While his major is currently undecided, Miller expressed interest in busi-

ness and law. He also plans to wrestle in college. Miller noted that he is grateful for the strength of PVHS and the greater Pequea Valley community. “I (had) teachers I talked to. … I (was) not in their classes, but they knew my name,” shared Miller, who recalled when his family had a house fire several years ago. “The support we received from the community was amazing,” Miller said.

Nagle noted that one goal of the program is to eventually train and credential employees. “The machine we needed for the caliber of printing we were after was a Xerox digital professional machine,” said Nagle, who noted that Xerox runs a workforce development credentialing program for the equipment. “We are looking ahead to the next phase (of workforce development),” Nagle said. Rogers noted that the shop’s services are not the only reason cus-

tomers come to Factory Prints. Quoting one of her LBC professors, she stated, “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. The reason we print is because of where the money will go.” Nagle agreed. “By purchasing a print job, (our customers) are serving those who are under-resourced in the community,” he said. Readers who would like to know more about Factory Prints may search for “Factory Prints” on Facebook or email megan@the factoryministries.com.

Keep The Tradition Running With Red Rose Run Beginning Thursday, June 3, the city of Lancaster Office of Promotion (LOOP) will host its 45th annual Red Rose Run. This year’s race will be virtual, and participants can complete their 5 miles in one continuous route or over the course of four days from June 3 to Sunday, June 6. Participants will have the option to walk or run the race and can submit their times for a chance to win awards. Organizers will email the winners once they have been determined. Tshirts will be included in registration, which is currently open. This will be the fourth year that proceeds benefit Lancaster Central

Market. When asked why people should participate in the race, Dani Decker, communications manager at Central Market, said, “Because it allows Central Market to continue operating and to continue to be a source of fresh food for Lancaster city and the surrounding counties.” Although there are for profit businesses within the market, Central Market is run by a nonprofit. Events such as Red Rose Run help Central Market with outreach, employing staff, and maintaining the building. Although the race was different last year, the proceeds still made a huge impact on Central Market. “It was so important because we used the money to purchase

hand sanitizer stations, provide masks to everyone who walked through the doors, and do thorough cleanings,” explained Decker LOOP strives to make Red Rose Run better than the year before. This year, LOOP put together six different course options for those local to Lancaster. “Since the race is virtual, you can run it anywhere, but we put together these options to help guide people,” said Annie Weeks, director of LOOP. “It’s been a hard year for so many people, and this is a chance for everyone to do something together from all around the world. This is a city celebration. We’re celebrating community and we’re celebrating health.”

“As a city, we are all coming back together after a year apart, and traditions like the Red Rose Run are a great way to do that,” noted Decker. “Central Market wouldn’t exist without a community. The support we feel coming from the community is what keeps Central Market going.” For more information about the Red Rose Run, visit http://bit.ly/RedRoseRun2021 or email loop@cityoflancasterpa.com. Sounds of Strasburg, the annual series of five free concerts at the Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., will begin with a performance by AMFM on Saturday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m. The band’s name, AMFM, stands for Andy Mowatt’s Frequency Movement. The Lancaster-based band of more than five pieces consists of virtuosic musicians who play original arrangements that blend elements of jazz, jam, rock, funk, soul and blues. Mowatt has called the band’s sound “symphonic funk box - talkbox funk music.” Mowatt is a renowned guitarist with more than 10 years of full-time professional experience as a musician. He teaches lessons and master classes, writes, produces, records and tours. Mowatt recently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he will be a member of the Air Force’s rock band, Max Impact. Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on soft turf within the park’s terraced amphitheater. Coolers and alcoholic beverages will be prohibited. Those

dation will hold its 20th golf tournament at Foxchase Golf Club on Wednesday, June 23. A fundraising Cadillac dinner will be held at the Lancaster Country Club on Friday, Sept. 24. In 2001, the Jeff Musser Foundation became an official nonprofit. Working with social workers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn State Hershey, and Nemours in Wilmington, Del., the organization works to alleviate financial obligations that can become burdensome. “We try to keep (the family) in their home, so we make mortgage payments, rents, utilities, and car payments,” said Musser. Larry Shirk, who helps the organization fundraise, said that the hospital social workers who contact Musser with information about families that need help are crucial to the system. Musser contacts referred families by phone when he is allowed and then sends requests to the organization’s six-member board. Larry’s wife, Judi, acts as administrator, getting checks to families in need. Over the last year or so, communication between Musser, board members, and the Shirks has been done electronically so the work of the foundation could continue. “After this year, we will have given out $2 million,” said Musser, who noted that donations were down significantly in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. “The best way to help is to visit our website and donate money,” shared Musser, adding that the organization is happy to accept checks. He pointed out that administrative costs are negligible. “We don’t take any costs out,” he said. “If you give us $100, (that) $100 goes to the families.” Readers who would like to know more about the organization and its work may visit https://jeffmusserfoundation.org/ or call 717-673-6333.

L ANCASTER BEYOND OUR DOORS At Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, we believe care is more than what happens in a hospital. It’s when we all come together to help our neighbors. We know that safe housing, access to healthy food, and emotional and behavioral support are essential to the well-being of our community. As Lancaster’s most trusted health system for generations, we never stop working to deliver care far beyond our doors by teaming with equally dedicated partners to improve lives, here in the place we call home.
