Garden Of Hope Schedules Annual Service By Ann Mead Ash

When Dawn Waltman and her husband, Brian, had a stillborn child 23 years ago, the experience jarred them. As they worked to negotiate the grieving process, the couple discovered there was no place for families to go to commemorate their lost children. “People expected these families to pick up and move on,” recalled Dawn. Dawn and Brian did not agree with the cultural response to their situation. “We felt deeply the babies should be remembered,” said Dawn. “We didn’t feel God wanted families to just move on from a loss. The child should be grieved, remembered, and celebrated.” The couple set about creating a place for those who had lost babies to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death. Working with a board, Dawn and Brian created the Garden of Hope,

located at 30 Springhouse Lane, Gordonville. The garden, which is now 10 years old, will be the site of a special event for families that have lost babies on Sunday, June 9, at 4 p.m. The event will begin with a service at the restored Tobacco Barn at the Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens. The service will include Scripture readings and song. Dawn will speak about the mission of the garden and what it means for families. Each family will receive a yellow biodegradable balloon on which to write the name of the child they lost. “We do a remembrance walk from the Tobacco Barn to the Garden of Hope,” said Dawn, who explained that yellow is the color of remembrance. “It is silent as we walk with the balloons.” At the garden, doves will be released to symbolize the spirit of God journeying with the families, and the babies’ names will be read. “As See Garden Of Hope pg 11

powder-actuated tool certification, along with forklift training. They may also be tested to handle refrigerant. “The instructors are the key to connecting with the students, delivering the program, and coaching them,” Bianchi noted. In addition to Draper, professors include Josephine Tyndall for plumbing; Mark Gardner for masonry; Ray Buckwalter and his son Joel, who team-teach electrical systems; Joel Charles and John Coyle at HallerU; and Dave Sload and Stephanie Larkin at ABC Keystone. Members of the recent cohort worked to complete their on-thejob training at the building that will become the Heritage Press Education Center. The .918 Club will use the completed building to preserve and promote letterpress printing. “It will be a hands-on learning center for school groups, church groups, and community groups,” said Ken Kulinkowski, .918 Club president, who is thrilled at the progress the students have made at the building. “In the six weeks, they have accomplished as much as we did in four years,” he noted, adding that the group plans to open the building for the Printer’s Fair to be held Friday through Sunday, Sept. 20 through 22. Draper noted that students who complete the course may decide to go further in one of the fields they have been introduced to in the program, or they may opt to look for employment with management companies for shopping centers and apartment buildings. The next cohort will begin on Monday, June 17, with classes running from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays. Up to 25 students may take part. Readers who are interested in the class may visit http://tec centro.sacapa.org/programs to register. Individuals who have questions may contact bianchi@stevenscollege.edu.

“When you see the children (of the graduating students) at graduation, it puts it in perspective,” said Timothy Bianchi, vice president of academic affairs for TSCT. “Adults are coming back to school … many of whom thought they would never go to a college.” Bianchi explained that the roots of the FMT program were cultivated by William Griscom, president of TSCT, who recognized a need for skilled technicians in the facilities maintenance field. Seed money for the program was provided by the BB&T Economic Growth Fund in partnership with the Lancaster County Community Foundation. PNC Bank also contributed to help buy students’ tools. Tec Centro, located at 102 Chester St., Lancaster, provides vocational training, and representatives of the school had been working to develop a facilities manager program when Thaddeus Stevens College received the grant money. A majority of the classes are offered at the Tec Centro campus. Marlyn Barbosa, director of Tec Centro, said the partnership has been beneficial to students. “(The partnership) has provided more access to community members to attend a competitive school like TSCT,” said Barbosa. “(Students) can get their training in the neighborhood, and it has allowed nontraditional students - adults in the workforce - to gain additional skills to help them (with employment),” she noted Instructor Tim Draper said that the six-month program requires students to be dedicated and focused. Students receive occupational safety training followed by four weeks each of instruction in disciplines including carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, and masonry. “They finish with a six-week hands-on program where we do a live project,” explained Draper. Students who pass the course receive an OSHA certificate and

The other centers are Caring Hearts, Penn Johns Sunbeam, Special Hearts Circle, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly auction. This year’s auction will be the 13th annual benefit, and it will be held on Monday, July 1, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of food items will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m. Quilts will be sold beginning at 4 p.m. Among the items that have been gathered for the auction are flowers and plants, wooden toys and chests. Large specialty items, including swing sets, sheds, and carriages, will be sold beginning at 6 p.m. A 26-by-28-foot garage that can be built on-site in a choice of colors will also be auctioned off this year. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out. Mervin, age 20, is happy to chat with visitors to the center. Asked what his favorite activity is, he walks to a kiosk in the Sunny Sunbeam Gift Shop to point out the key chains, crocheted frogs, and rolled candy dolls he has helped to assemble. The students also assemble gift

assembled for Mennonite Central Committee, and newspaper is torn up to create animal bedding. Sadie, who is one of the teachers, said that making gift items and other productive tasks is just one of the activities students take part in at the center from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. each day they attend. During news time, any of the students can share news from home, Sadie noted, adding that students often choose to tell about new babies and new puppies. Lessons, which include reading, flash cards, telling time, memory verses, money, and German, are also on the agenda to help students retain what they learned at school. Students bring their lunch two days a week, but one day a week a teacher makes lunch, and students are welcome to bring desserts or other courses. “The children love to bring things along,” said Sadie. The center also provides haystack meals - similar to taco salads - for families and friends who have an interest in helping students with special needs. On nice days, lunch may be eaten outside in a fenced yard behind the center. Students take turns helping to mow the grass and tending the flower beds in the yard, tasks Sadie noted that they enjoy. Sadie began working with the children at Penn Johns Sunbeam when she was asked to fill in for another teacher for a year. She spent three years there, and she has been at Sunny Sunbeam for eight years now. “I am so blessed. I just love (my work with the students),” she said. Readers who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-768-8497, 717-442-4144, or 717-354-2380. The auction number on the day of the sale will be 717-983-8415.

W hen Ray Harnish heard that his friends Duane Mellinger and Kirby Hanna would both have their vintage cars featured in 2019 issues of “Chevy High Performance,” he contacted them to be sure they would be at the 17th annual Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) Car Cruise. Mellinger’s 1969 Camaro appeared in the March 2019 issue, and Hanna’s 1971 El Camino will be in a future issue of the magazine. This year’s cruise will be held on Sunday, June 9, at Garden Spot High School (GSHS), 669 E. Main St., New Holland. The event, which generally features about 200 vehicles, will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. This year, the event will include live music by The Nomads. The group will play throughout the event. from pg 1 magazine’s photographer at the East Coast Indoor Nationals Car, Truck, and Bike Show held in Timonium, Md., in December of 2017. Mellinger’s Camaro was one that he and Hanna worked on together to restore for a friend in 1988. “I bought it from the friend in 2004,” said Mellinger. Hanna said that his El Camino has been with him since high school. “This was my first car,” said Hanna, who purchased the vehicle in December 1987. Harnish said that this year’s cruise will feature a variety of vintage and modern vehicles, as well as a number of competitions involving cars, model vehicles, and food. He noted that the cruise is open to cars, trucks, motorcycles, and tractors. “If it’s on wheels, and (owners) have the (registration fee) they can come (join us),” said Harnish, who hopes to see 300 vehicles take part in this

year’s show. There is no preregistration for the event, as registration will only be available on the day of the cruise. During the cruise, local firefighters will select vehicles to receive awards in several categories, including firefighters’ choice, chief ’s choice, best motor, and best paint. Contests involving cars will include a muffler rap contest. Perks for those who register vehicles will include T-shirts to the owners of the first 50 vehicles and dash plaques to the first 100 owners. Participants will also have the opportunity to win door prizes donated by local businesses, including a grand prize of $1,000 off the purchase of a new car or truck from a local dealership or $500 cash. Other contests will include a model car competition that is open to people of all ages. “Model car competition winners will receive ribbons,” said

ABC Chapter Announces STEP Award Winners The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the winners of its 2019 Safety Training and Evaluation (STEP) Awards and recognized its 2019 OSHA Partners on May 1. Representatives from several member companies accepted their awards at the ABC Safety Awards Dinner. The anchor of ABC’s Safety Awards program is STEP, which provides companies a structured approach to benchmark and improve their safety efforts. The goal of the program is to provide an organized approach to analyze and further develop a company’s safety and loss prevention. Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 20 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidence rates. Garden Of Hope from pg 1 masons, and landscapers came in and volunteered to create and build the garden. Paintings and a reflection gazebo for families to visit at any time are also part of the garden. While the sculpture is a focal point, Dawn pointed out that the garden has two memorial walls. “Families can order plaques in memory of their babies, she explained, noting that plaques that have been placed in the garden honor children who were lost recently as well as those lost more than 50 years ago. She added that siblings sometimes purchase a plaque in honor of a brother or sister. Readers who would like more information about the garden or the service may visit www.lancastergardenofhope.com.

They knew the piece belonged in the garden, so they contacted Beverly Paddleford, the creator of the sculpture, and raised the funds to purchase one. By 2005, Garden of Hope’s full-size sculpture was being transported to different churches for services. In 2006, Myron Stoltzfus donated land for the garden. “We spent a couple years on land development and structure of the garden, said Dawn, who noted that many area excavators,

SCORE Announces Award Winners By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Hot Air Balloon Available 9AM-1PM!

SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon president Bobb Bewley (left) and president-elect Kevin St. Cyr congratulated the honorees at the organization’s Small Business Awards Luncheon on April 25. St. Cyr mentored one of this year’s award winners. longest-running entity to receive an award. The organization was started in 1970, and in preparation for its next 50 years, the board of directors began developing a strategic plan and a direction for the future. Kevin St. Cyr mentored executive director Patrick Kerwin, who is LVECF’s only full-time employee, and he helped the board of directors develop mission and vision statements. “Thanks to SCORE and our strategic plan, we feel well-prepared to enter the next half-century,” Kerwin said. Millersville University (MU) president Daniel Wubah presented an award to Kurt Moon, who created STR Resources & Associates. “One of the reasons Lancaster is a special place is because of the interconnectedness,” Wubah said, demonstrating this by giving a shout-out to Foxduck co-founder Rebecca Wood, who is studying business at MU. Wubah also announced that MU has a new initiative in process, that of developing a mentorship office reminiscent of SCORE’s work, but for students. Moon shared that SCORE mentor Hugh McMaster helped him with the practical aspects of establishing and growing a business, but McMaster also provided crucial emotional support as well. “‘You have tremendous value to bring to clients,’” Moon reported McMaster as saying. “Those examples pushed me through self-doubt.”

In 1996, Leigh Lindsay inadvertently started a theater in an art studio. In 2018, that theater, Zoetropolis, moved into a new space and is in the final stages of opening a restaurant. “We are so grateful for SCORE,” said partner Matt Hostetter. “Mentor and ‘business dad’ Lou Davenport provided us with courage to keep with our passion project and get this far.” St. Cyr, who will be the next chapter president when Bewley’s term concludes this year, presented SCORE’s first community partner award to Heather Sharpe and Katie Basile of the Duke Street Business Center. He noted that during the first meeting clients have with SCORE, they are directed to meet with Basile and learn about the center’s resources. In closing, Bewley remarked, “SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon is proud to help you fulfill your vision and goals. If you’re inspired and want to be a mentor or donate, contact us.” For more information, readers may call 717-397-3092 or visit www.lancaster.score.org.

ABOUT THE CLINIC FOR SPECIAL CHILDREN: The Clinic for Special Children was established in 1989 as a non-profit medical service for children with complex medical needs. The Clinic’s mission is to serve children and adults who suffer from genetic and other complex medical disorders by providing comprehensive medical, laboratory, and consultative services, and by increasing and disseminating knowledge of science and medicine. Today, CSC cares for over 1,100 active patients from 42 states and 17 countries and treats over 300 unique disorders. R039166

The Lancaster-Lebanon chapter of SCORE recognized five outstanding small businesses and nonprofits at the mentorship organization’s annual Small Business Awards Luncheon on April 25. The winners included EnterTRAINING Solutions LLC, Foxduck LLC, Lebanon Valley Exposition Center & Fairgrounds, STR Resources & Associates LLC, and Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse. The Duke Street Business Center at the Lancaster Public Library was also recognized for its support of SCORE. “These organizations, and the people running them, represent some of the best small businesses the Lancaster-Lebanon area has to offer,” said chapter president Bobb Bewley. “We are so fortunate to have them in our community, and we here at SCORE are honored to have worked with them as mentors.” SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon has 71 volunteer mentors who provided 2,668 mentoring sessions, along with 89 workshops and roundtables, and worked with 646 new clients in 2018. When Clint Krushinsky presented an award to Monica Rakoczy of EnterTRAINING Solutions, he said, “SCORE helps businesses improve and make them the best they can be.” Rakoczy concurred, relating a story of tragedy avoided because a worker recognized unsafe trenching from a worksite safety seminar she provided. Mentor Jerry Glenn helped Rakoczy develop her training business, and she was recently asked to speak at Con Expo in Las Vegas, which is a dream come true. Joshua Wood of Foxduck - his 3year-old daughter supplied the company’s name - credited SCORE for the screen-printing company’s success. “SCORE cared about our mission as much as we did,” Wood said, noting that the mission and process were solidified by meetings with mentor Eric Parker. “We will continue to utilize SCORE services because it’s an outstanding resource.” Lebanon Valley Exposition Center & Fairgrounds (LVECF) was the
