CMBC To Send Out Departing Missionaries By Francine Fulton

On Sunday, June 30, Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC), 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, will hold a commissioning ceremony and a farewell reception for the Adomako family, who will depart for mission work in Ghana with Love in Christ Global Missions. Emmanuel and Alice Adomako and their children, Eugene, Jayden and Jeanette, will depart for West Africa on Sunday, July 7. The Sunday service at CMBC will begin at 9 a.m., followed by Sunday school and Adult Bible Fellowship at 10:30 a.m. The reception for the Adomakos will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the church’s fellowship hall. Light refreshments will be served. “That Sunday will be the day that I preach my last sermon (at CMBC), and that same Sunday my family will be commissioned and sent off officially as

missionaries from CMBC to Ghana,” Emmanuel explained, adding that he will also be ordained at CMBC on June 30 after serving the church as a ministry intern. Emmanuel, a graduate of Lancaster Bible College (LBC), will utilize his education at LBC to train and equip pastors and leaders in Ghana. Since he has developed a working relationship with LBC’s Capital Seminary & Graduate School, he will be able to offer LBCsanctioned and accredited Bible training at the Love in Christ Global Missions ministry center. In addition, Alice will use her nursing degree to provide medical care and medical training in Ghana, while also sharing the Gospel message. Finally, the couple will focus on educational programs for children living in Ghana. For Emmanuel and Alice, the upcoming move is actually a return home, since the couple is originally from See Missionaries pg 7

The hugs started almost as soon as the members of Vocal Harmonix gathered at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, for a rehearsal on June 10. One woman had recently received a cancer diagnosis.

Another had returned from traveling. Yet another had had surgery. Whether the reason was positive or upsetting, the embraces abounded. “We’re a very caring group,” one member explained after the rehearsal concluded, again with hugs, this time for the group’s newest member, who See Vocal Harmonix pg 11

The Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, has expanded once again. Last year, nearly 1,000 visitors each day viewed the addition of Gen. Longstreet’s headquarters camp, the signal corps, additional Federal generals, troops from the 1st Pennsylvania Reserves Company D, and skirmish battle re-enactments. This year, the event will be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 28, 29, and 30, and will bring an additional camp area featuring sutlers, the Christian Commission, Wheat’s Tigers Zouave unit CSA, U.S. Colored Troops, additional Federal generals, Confederate generals from Lee’s Lieutenants, and more to be confirmed. Setup for the encampment will begin on Thursday, June 27, with the arrival of the sutlers, the establishment of the military command headquarters and artillery in the military camp, and the placement of canvas for the living history, sutlers camp coordination, and the history of the boys of the Civil War. Food service this year will be provided by Atomic Hogs BBQ, which will set up and start the cooking process on June 27. The barbecue caterer will be ready to serve visitors when the event is open to the public. Visitors are welcome between 2 and 4 p.m. on June 28 and may watch the camps come together, ask questions, and visit with participants as long as they do not interfere with setup. Sutlers will be open for business, and the food service will be in full operation during that time. The main event will be held on the weekend, with the encampment open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 29 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 30. Parking and admission will be free of charge, but a nominal fee will be charged for tours of the historic birthplace. The encampment will be divided into three fields: close to the birthplace, the lower lawn, and an adjacent battlefield. The living history area of the camp will be located closest to the birthplace, with authors, a blacksmith, a surgeon, Federal and Confederate generals, President Abraham Lincoln, and other dignitaries housed there. Guests may visit with Lincoln and the generals twice each day. Gen. and Mrs. Robert E. Lee will receive callers on June 29. Lincoln’s private secretary, John Nicolay, will join the president on June 30. The lower lawn will house the military camps, which will include signal corps, infantry, dismounted cavalry, artillery, Gen. Longstreet’s command headquarters, and rifle and artillery demonstrations, alternating every half hour. A battle re-enactment will be held each afternoon on the battlefield. The sutlers’ camp will be situated at one end of the military camp. Civil Warera reproduction clothing and materials, including camp tables, boxes, and chairs, may be purchased by visitors as well as participants. The Christian Commission will also be camped at that end, and chaplains Alan and Faith Farley will conduct Sunday services there. Sheep and wool educators may be found at the lower end of the field, alongside the Black Confederates. Atomic Hogs BBQ will be located between the parking field and the living history camps, just off from the barn. Inside the end room of the barn will be Frank Vattelana Jr. with his collection of memorabilia, including photographs, from the war. Printed schedules will be available from several locations within each camp as well as from the food vendor. Visitors

New Holland police officer Wendell Metzler and his family had participated in the Relay For Life of Lancaster County for many years in support of a close friend who was fighting cancer. Then, in the summer of 2018 on a family vacation to Virginia Beach, Metzler had to be taken into the emergency room due to excruciating pain and the sudden inability to walk. He was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. “As a public servant, I had always taken great pride in helping others,” shared Metzler. “Through my times as a volunteer firefighter, EMT, and police officer, I never had to rely on others for help ... but God humbled me.” Metzler shared about his experience in celebration of one year of survivorship during the opening ceremony as the 2019 Honorary Survivor at the 26th annual Relay For Life of Lancaster County at Conestoga Valley High School. “I will forever be in debt to all the people who surrounded me in my weakest moments with prayers, meals, cards of encouragement, visits, and phone calls,” said Metzler to the audience gathered around the track at the school. “(Relay For Life) is a special

time to honor those who have lost their fight with cancer and support those who are fighting cancer today.” Relay For Life of Lancaster County kicked off on the evening of June 7, with 112 teams and more than 1,000 total participants taking turns walking around the track overnight until a closing ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on June 8. This year’s event raised more than $672,462 for the American Cancer Society. Organizer Stephanie Delp noted that the Lancaster event is the second-largest in the nation in terms of total funds raised. Delp said that she always looks forward to the opening ceremony, which includes a survivor lap. Cancer survivors whether diagnosed a few days or a dozen or more years ago - are invited to take a lap around the track as the crowd cheers them on. A Caregiver Lap held later in the evening honors those individuals who have stood by their loved ones on their journeys with cancer. The 2019 Honorary Caregiver was Cheyanne Leid of New Holland. At the recent Relay, luminarias emblazoned with the names of people who have died of cancer surrounded the track, and a special luminaria ceremony took

Family Farm Days from pg 1 Md., but grew up in Lancaster, arranged for her sisters and their father to meet her at Oregon Dairy when Family Farm Days opened on June 11. “I remember coming as a kid, and I wanted to share the fun and the chocolate milk with my daughter,” she explained. Adelaide Fernandez, 10 months, appeared to be having a blast as she munched on chicken tenders and french fries, licked up vanilla ice cream, and dug through field corn at a sensory table. Her cousins, 3-year-old Ellison Stafford and 18month-old Whitfield Stafford of Philadelphia, also enjoyed themselves. The brothers particularly liked seeing the pot-bellied pigs, a young steer, and two breeds of chickens. Riding in the tractor-pulled wagons that shuttled visitors to and from the farm, as well as taking a barrel train ride, were highlights for the Staffords. “It’s a great family-oriented event,” Danelle’s sister, Darcy Stafford, said. “I was, of course, excited to see my family, and my children love seeing the farm.” Attendees of Family Farm Days, which ran through June 13, were treated to a tour of the dairy barn; samples of several types of beverages, including kombucha and two varieties of chocolate milk; educational performances in the barnyard theater; a petting zoo; a scavenger hunt; stream studies; and a mobile aquaponics lab. Dairy royalty was on hand, and there were several livestockthemed costumed characters wandering the grounds. Folks could also purchase rides on miniature ponies and full-sized horses and take turns at a corn launcher. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding was slated to visit on June 13. Among the numerous exhibits from farm-related organizations, Master Gardeners Dyan Eisenberger and Jane Kintzi staffed a display from Penn State Extension on the spotted lanternfly. “It’s important to advertise current events that affect farmers and other people,” Eisenberger said. The spotted lanternfly is a highly invasive insect that has been found in southeastern Pennsylvania. Although some people think it is pretty, with white and red black-spotted wings, it destroys crops and particularly impacts the grape, hardwood, tree fruit, landscape, and nursery industries. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture are both working to keep the insect contained. A quarantine order has been issued, requiring all items moving within or out of the area to be inspected so that the transport of any living life stage of the pest can be prevented. “It’s hatching from April to July, so people will start seeing them,” Eisenberger said. The nymphs start at about a quarterinch in size, but they grow to four times that size. Folks who see evidence of spotted lanternflies are asked to report them at http://extension.psu.edu/spotted-lantern fly. Family Farm Days proved to be an effective place to disseminate information about spotted lanternflies and other invasive species, including Ailanthus altissima, which is also known as the tree-of-heaven. “”People are seeking information, and that’s our job: to get the research-based information out there,” Kintzi said. And that - getting information out - was at the heart of Family Farm Days. A cooperative effort between Oregon Dairy Family Farm and the Lancaster County Agriculture Council, the event aimed to spread the word about farming and its importance for individuals and the community. Ghana. “In 2010, I met a missionary from the United States. When preaching in the villages, he wanted someone to help him translate,” said Emmanuel, who is fluent in English. “Since I was born and raised in Ghana and settled in different villages, I am able to speak the dialect. I went to preach with him, and we became friends. He returned to the United States and he called me one day and said he wanted me to attend Bible college in the United States. I didn’t say yes right away because I wasn’t ready to travel and I wasn’t ready to leave my family, so I told him to do the paperwork and we would see how things played out.” The decision to leave Ghana and study in the United States was further complicated since Emmanuel had met his future wife, Alice, and they were planning their wedding. “March 24, 2012, was my wedding day. The same day I got a letter from LBC telling me that I got a scholarship,” Emmanuel said. After much discussion with his new wife, Emmanuel decided to leave Ghana and pursue his education at LBC, where he eventually graduated with a bachelor’s degree in student ministry, biblical studies and communication and a Master of Arts in leadership studies. “At the tail end of my first year, the Lord made it possible for my wife to come over and join me,” Emmanuel said, noting that Alice also attended LBC, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies. The couple was able to return to Ghana in 2013 and 2015 for visits, but their upcoming trip will be more permanent. “We are so excited; Ghana is our home,” Emmanuel stated. “Our ministry is based in Ghana, and God has called us to go and train and lead our people and do the work of God. We can’t wait to get back home to settle.” More information about the ministry is available at www.loveinchristglobal missions.com and www.face book.com/loveinchristglobal missions. CMBC is located at the corner of Mine and Kinzer roads, 4 miles west of the Village of Gap and 2 miles south of Route 30. Craft Show To Help Support NHSAP By Ann Mead Ash

As the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) celebrates its 40th anniversary, Sue Noll, secretary/treasurer for NHSAP, is looking forward to featuring a few new acts in the lineup, including the Temple Avenue jazz quintet, Vinegar Creek Constituency, Dreadnought Brigade, and Jubilation Jazz. But Noll is especially looking forward to the concert in the park on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. “John Bressler has not been here for many years,” said Noll of the pianist who is originally from Churchtown and who now tours internationally. Bressler is known for his passion to entertain and his raspy vocal style. The 2019 NHSAP will include more than 20 live musical presentations in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located in the 400 block of Jackson Street in New Holland. Concerts will begin at 7 p.m., with the exception of the Saturday, Aug. 17, concert, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Funds to help support NHSAP are raised by the annual arts and crafts show sponsored by the organization. This year’s show will be held in the park on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizers have lined up about 75 vendors for the rain-or-shine event. Among the displays, shoppers will find crafters selling pottery, soap, candles, crocheted crafts, stained glass, repurposed items, wooden crafts, photography, plants, lawn ornaments, jewelry, pot holders, embroidered towels, and more. Many of the crafters will donate items to a Chinese auction. NHSAP craft fair coordinators have arranged for vendors to sell breakfast and lunch items at the event. Happy Dog will sell both breakfast and lunch foods. Foltz Pretzels will sell pretzels and lemonade, and Schatz Ice Cream will be on-site. A signed and framed Myrtle Tremblay print of a scene from Charlotte Street in Lancaster will be set up at the show. The print will be given away on Monday, Sept. 2, at the Fiddlers Picnic, which will be the final NHSAP event of the season. The season will begin with the New Holland Concert Band on Thursday, July 4. The concert will be followed by fireworks. The rain date for that event will be Friday, July 5. On Sunday, July 7, Summit Hill, a bluegrass and gospel band, will return to the park, and on Wednesday, July 10, Charlie Zahm will play. On Saturday, July 13, the popular Nomads will perform, and on Sunday, July 14, local country singer Sam Schmidthuber will play. On Wednesday, July 17, Big Boy Brass will be heard in the park, and on Saturday, July 20, Elvis and The Memphis Mafia, featuring Bob Lougheed as Elvis, will perform. On Sunday, July 21, Temple Avenue, a jazz quintet, will play, and on Wednesday, July 24, Jubilation Jazz will entertain listeners. On

Saturday, July 27, The New Individuals will perform at the venue, and on Sunday, July 28, Servant Stage Company will present “Let Freedom Ring,” a musical celebration of America. The final concert of July will feature the classic country of Conley & Watson on Wednesday, July 31. In August, the West Chester Community Concert Band will play on Sunday,

“It’s very rewarding to see our patients that are survivors at the walk and to be able to celebrate their journey with them,” Justice said. “Cancer patients are a very special population. They’ve got resilience.” Relay For Life got its start in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., to raise money for the American Cancer Society. He raised $27,000, and the following year 19 teams took part in a similarly styled fundraising event and raised $33,000. in unaccompanied, or a capella, singing. VHMX is an a capella show chorus, with a style that is close to musical theater. The group sings a number of barbershop-style songs, but its repertoire is not restricted to that style. All of its music is performed from memory, and each piece is carefully choreographed. The group accepts performance gigs, including singing telegrams on select holidays. “We’d love it if people need entertainment, they’d think of Vocal Harmonix,” Whitehaus said. VHMX will participate in the Lititz Fourth of July Parade on Wednesday, July 3, and sing the national anthem at a Barnstormers game on Thursday, Sept. 5. The group will also perform as part of Opera Lancaster’s Lemonade Concert Series on Thursday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. During that concert, VHMX will join Harmony Revolution, featuring members of the Red Rose Men’s Chorus, on several pieces. On the four Mondays leading up to the Aug. 1 concert - July 8, 15, 22, and 29 - at 7 p.m., folks who are interested in VHMX are welcome to attend rehearsals, where they can learn to sing a modern arrangement of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Misty.” “We’ll be teaching what we do,” Whitehaus said. “They can sing with us when we sing with the men without joining us.” New members are welcome at any time. Folks who would like more information may visit www.vocalharmonix.org or email vocalharmonix@gmail.com.

was voted in that night. “Our sisterhood is very strong,” agreed director Lori Jo Whitehaus. “This is like a big family.” Currently, members range in age from early 20s to 91, and while there is a rigorous audition process to get in, it is

restricted to Lancaster city residents. In fact, members come from Lancaster, Chester, Dauphin, Berks, York, and Cumberland counties. Whitehaus explained that membership is skill-based rather than attendance-based, so it is not necessarily a hardship if folks are unable to attend every Monday evening rehearsal. Each song the group performs has a rehearsal track so that choir members can perfect their parts at home. To ensure a near-perfect sound, each member is required to record herself singing her parts and send the recordings to her section leader for approval. The group’s hard work has paid off over the years. Most recently, VHMX placed third overall and first in the midsize division in Region 19 competition and is waiting to receive an invitation to compete at the international contest that will be held in Louisville, Ky., next year. Additionally, quartets composed of VHMX members finished eighth and 13th out of approximately 50. During the recent rehearsal, Whitehaus reported that the chorus will be ordering pins to commemorate that VHMX scored more than 600 points in adjudication. She noted that 800 is a perfect score and, like the SAT, is difficult to achieve. Leading a chorus to score more than 600 designates Whitehaus as a master director in Sweet Adelines International (SAI), which is the largest women’s singing organization in the world. VHMX has been affiliated with SAI since 1961. A few VHMX members are part of the SAI leadership team. SAI choirs - VHMX included - specialize

Summer Reading Program Kicks Off At Atglen Library A summer of reading fun for people of all ages kicked off at Atglen Public Library with a Star Wars party as part of the SummerQuest reading program on June 15. In keeping with the Star Wars theme for

the day, costumed visitors from Garrison Carida of the 501st Legion appeared as Darth Vader, stormtroopers and other characters from the series. Photo ops with the characters, door prizes and refreshments were some of the highlights of the party, which also offered a chance to register for the program and borrow

some great books. “Summer is our busiest time of the year,” library director Robbyn Kehoe said. “We have about 100 participants in summer reading programs.” Some readers embraced the Star Wars theme with a passion. Among them was Debbie Cross of Atglen who dressed in costume along with her children. “We love the summer reading program. We go (to the library) all year-round,” Cross said. “The kids love the library, and this brings them in a little bit more for a little extra fun.” “We’re encouraging summer reading,” Kehoe said. “Read 30 minutes a day, check in

with us and you get a ticket for one of the prizes. We are starting a new program this year called Patch Power.” The Patch Power portion of the summer reading program allows readers to complete activity cards to earn badges in different categories. Patches are the Epic Wizard, Mad Chef, Globetrotter, Caped Avenger, Board Gaming Genius and Interstellar Seeker. “We have six patches. If you do four activities for (each of) them you get a patch you can sew on your tote bag or backpack,” Kehoe said. Attending programs at the library can count toward earning a patch. spent with an adult reading with a child counts as well. That is a pre-reading activity that promotes reading skills as well,” Kehoe said. “We encourage that - it all counts.” Adults are also welcome to participate. “We don’t have any adult prizes this year, but they can earn a ticket toward a prize for their household,” Kehoe said. “Reading is important all the time for everyone, and parents need to model reading for their kids.” While there are themes to the patch awards, reading on any topic is eligible for the reading log. “You can read any kind of book for the reading incentives,” Kehoe said. “Sometimes, for recreational reading, we actually read at a lower level than we do for academic reading, and that’s fine. That builds skills, that builds vocabulary and that builds reading comprehension and enjoyment. We can’t forget about the enjoyment piece. The See Library pg 15

Morales Receives Scholarship For PFEW Nathan Morales, a sophomore at Octorara High School and the son of Josh and Maggie Lee of Gap, has been granted a full scholarship to attend Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW). The weeklong economic education program offers students an inside look at the private enterprise system and the workings of the free market. Morales will attend Week 3 of the five, one-week sessions offered at Lycoming College. Pennsylvania teachers and counselors recommend the candidates, who are then reviewed by the PFEW staff. Admission is based on motivation to learn as demonstrated through essays submitted by the applicants.

Those accepted are awarded scholarships, which cover all program costs, excluding a nominal registration fee and transportation to and from Williamsport. When students arrive for their one-week session in July or August, they are housed on the campus in dormitories, where they experience a taste of college life.

During the week, students form companies that compete against each other for the equivalent of three years using a college-level simulation. The companies are evaluated on management skill, return on net assets, a marketing and advertising campaign, and a presentation to stockholders. Business volunteers serve

as company advisers, suggesting available options and sharing their own experiences as students face many of the same decisions real executives confront every day. The competition is designed to help students learn the value of teamwork, communication, and leadership. PFEW also features dozens of speakers presenting seminars and discussions on topics like the relationships of business with labor, government, and consumers. Students also hear

talks about business ethics, management and leadership skills, the economic system future, the global marketplace, money and banking, business operations, careers in business, and marketable skills. Now in its 40th year of operation, PFEW is

entirely funded, taught, and staffed by the Pennsylvania business community. Its governing body is the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education, a nonprofit organization. For more information, readers may contact the foundation at 814-833-9576 or visit www.pfew.org.
