Making Masks For Those Who Read Lips By Ann Mead Ash
When COVID-19 restrictions meant that Elizabeth Martin of Gap, a student in Janice Beitzel’s LancasterLebanon IU13 deaf and hard of hearing class located at Warwick High School, was no longer being bused to Lititz from Pequea Valley School District each week day, she grew a little bored. Although distance learning began in April, by the end of that month, Elizabeth was looking for more activity, specifically activity that allowed her to make a
contribution. “I normally sew or crochet,” said Elizabeth. “Since (the virus) was happening, I thought I should help (in some way). I started making the regular masks.” Using her grandmother Betty Risser’s sewing machine, Elizabeth could turn out a two-layer cotton mask fairly quickly. “At the beginning, I made the regular masks, and I sold them from a table outside my house,” reported Elizabeth, whose mother, Sally, noted that those masks sold well. Then Beitzel shared that she was making masks with windows that allow for lip reading. “My teacher showed me one she made

In early May, two Lancaster titans of nonprofit affordable housing decided they would be stronger together. Board members of Tabor Community Services and Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) voted to approve merging the two organizations. Together they will build on a foundation of 75 years of service in housing advocacy and financial empowerment to area residents. “With the affordable housing crisis in the backdrop, we approached the important question of merging two strong organizations,” said Mike McKenna, Tabor Community Services president. Rick Jackson, LHOP board chair, noted that the organizations were different in origin, but similar in mission. See Tabor And LHOP pg 4

Inns Join Effort To Treat The Troops While the celebration of Independence Day on July 4 may have made Americans think back to the moment in Philadelphia in 1776 when the Founding Fathers declared citizens of the 13 colonies free from English rule, owners of several Lancaster County bed-and-breakfasts were thinking of those serving overseas. At least four local innkeepers joined in an Independence Day initiative that sent cookies, socks, banana bread, and toothpaste to members of the U.S. military deployed overseas in an effort dubbed “Inn Support of Our Troops.” Rebecca Gallagher of the Historic Smithton Inn, 900 W. Main St., Ephrata, said she jumped at the chance to take part in the project, noting that “veterans are a soft spot for me.” Rebecca, who owns the inn with her husband, Dave, served as co-chair of the committee that built Veterans Plaza in Ephrata with the Winters Leadership Memorial statue as the centerpiece. After completion of the project, the group held a lecture series that gave area veterans a chance to share their stories. Each Veterans Day for a decade, the inn has See Troops pg 6

The masks are made from cotton with vinyl in the center so the lips show. She makes the masks in small, medium, and large sizes for both adults and children, and she can make larger ones for adults if necessary. Sally noted that at certain times supplies to make the masks were hard to find. “ We had to get inventive (when) there was a lack of materials,” she said. “We started with everything we could find at the house, but when she started selling them and she was selling out, we had to get more material and elastic.” When elastic for the earloops was hard to find, they See Making Masks pg 8

vices.” “We will assess where gaps exist,” explained Stacks, who noted that possibilities include innovative pilots such as home repair loans, expansion of the existing rental housing location services, and shared housing that matches individuals who need affordable housing with homeowners with rooms to rent. In addition, there is a plan to offer an educational curriculum covering budgets, savings, credit and debt, and fair housing, as well as more transparency on how to obtain assistance. “The combined service offerings will be available more fully throughout the county, and potentially, regionally,” said Stacks. Both organizations are looking forward to a future as one stronger and better organization. “(We) can build off longstanding relationships with landlords to provide greater education, partnership, and advocacy,” said Stacks, who noted that this may influence the availability of safe, quality housing throughout the county. “Together, we will increase ease of collaboration with other partners in the community.” Stacks said that the boards of LHOP and Tabor will combine to form a single board of directors. “Integration planning has commenced and will be ongoing throughout the spring and summer of 2020,” reported Stacks. “The vision and goals of our two organizations are indeed shared,” he said. “We also share ... values including empowerment, innovation, and accountability.” Phyllis Stacks, vice president for development with Tabor, noted that the two organizations had been considering the move for nearly a year. “The … value of a possible merger emerged through both organizations’ strategic planning processes these past summers,” she reported, noting that the pair’s shared commitment to the concept that “everyone deserves a place to call home” was a motivating factor. Benefiting clients of both organizations is one main goal of the merger. “Together … we can empower clients (on) a journey from crisis to stability to achieving long-term goals like homeownership,” said Stacks, noting that the two organizations help by lending to developers as well as partnering with landlords. “On the housing demand side, (we will be) helping people find stable housing after a period of homelessness, protecting their rights under the Fair Housing Act, (and helping them in) avoiding evictions and foreclosure, or buying their first home,” said Stacks. Stacks added that the merger will allow the organization to place “greater emphasis on prevention of homelessness, new loan products, and expanded financial empowerment ser-

Market St., Marietta, went for variety in their donation, sending a box stuffed with peanut butter oatmeal cookies, beef jerky, pork rinds, cheese crisps, hot sauce, green tea, ground coffee, candy, a mug, wet wipes, socks, and disposable razors as a care package to a service member in the Air Force stationed in Afghanistan. The pair noted that they have always supported the military by giving free rooms each year to veterans near Veterans Day and offering a discount to active-duty military year round. “We felt the need to support this endeavor,” they said. The owners intend to continue the effort by making monthly gifts to active military
chip and butterscotch chip cookies on the morning of June 23 to mail to a member of the military. She also enclosed a new pair of wool socks as packing and included a letter thanking the young man for his service. This was not Miller’s first effort to support the troops. “Recently a young man from our church enlisted in the Marines, and we have been praying for him, along with other service personnel who have so graciously given of their time to protect our great nation,” she said, adding that the opportunity to bake for an assigned member of the service was the least she could do to show support. “I hope to encourage our military to be courageous, to stand firm, and ultimately to trust in God for their hope and future,” she said. Inn Support of Our Troops
was organized by Maria Coder, a public relations professional working with the Association of Lodging Professionals (ALP). The effort brought together more than 30 inns across the U.S. Inn Support of Our Troops worked with Soldiers’ Angels participating as Angel Bakers, which gave volunteers access to a database with the first name and state of a service member who had expressed interest in receiving
baked goods. Soldiers’ Angels is a national charity providing aid, comfort, and resources to the military, veterans, and their families. Many of the participating inns were closed during the pandemic, which led to income loss and even financial hardship. The Inn Support of Our Troops effort gave bed-and-breakfast owners a chance to showcase their talents and reach out to members of the military serving far from home.

For the initiative, Rebecca sent a collection of the sweet breads she serves her guests, which include flavors such as strawberry nut, cinnamon butterscotch, banana, chocolate zucchini, and blueberry orange. “I think what’s important for me is having the opportunity to make a (member of the military) smile and know that someone’s thinking of them and thankful for them,” said Rebecca. “If I can present a small gesture of my appreciation then I’m all in.” Pam and Dallas Fritz at the B.F. A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits. State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects. In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely” or “very” involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change. Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com. A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the field to the top 200 finalists. Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes. For more information, readers may visit www.neighborhood assist.com or call their local State Farm agent.

Although the masks are made with those who have a hearing impairment and read lips in mind, they are also useful for those who work in certain jobs where it is advantageous for others to see their smile, such as day cares. Both Elizabeth and Sally noted that the project has been educational for Elizabeth. “My money management (skills have improved), said Elizabeth. “I am meeting new people too. “This was a real good growing experience for her, said Sally, who added that Elizabeth took on the project with minimal help. “She took hold of this and went to town with it. Free Online STEM Camp Slated summer camp in a format that may spark interest in STEM and its related careers, support different styles of learning, remove obstacles to participation, and meet educational objectives in a rewarding way. The IUs recognized obstacles to participation could include families not having craft resources or broadcast television signals at home. To overcome these challenges, WITF assembled 3,000 resource bags and 300 antennas for IUs to distribute to partner locations that serve families directly. Each free resource bag contains pencils, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, paper plates, construction paper, safety scissors, a glue stick and the curriculum packet with instructions in English and Spanish. During the eight-week camp, families will watch featured PBS KIDS programs like “Wild Kratts” and “Hero Elementary” on WITF TV to learn about animal habitats, camouflage, mimicry, structure and more. A discussion guide and key vocabulary will help caregivers talk to their children about what they are watching. Then families will work together on an animal
habitat design project using the materials in the resource bags. The curriculum also includes introductions to STEM careers for young learners, a suggested book list and links to extension STEM games and activities online. The partners hope that participation in the “Summer STEM Adventure!” brings many positive outcomes for children and their families. Educational goals for the program include learning about design principles, engaging in family conversations that help develop social and emotional skills, practicing making inferences, reflecting on content, discussing details and exploring careers. IUs will distribute the resource bags and antennas to the following partner school districts and locations: Bermudian Springs, Tuscarora, Lincoln Charter School, West York, Upper Adams, Gettysburg, York Academy Regional Charter School, Chambersburg, School District of the City of York, LIU Early Childhood Classrooms, School District of Lancaster, Penn Manor School District, Steelton-Highspire Elementary (Salvation Army of Harrisburg), Susquehanna Township School District, Harrisburg School District and Camp Curtin YMCA. Any families that do not receive a resource bag but are interested in participating in “Summer STEM Adventure!” can access the activity sheets, book list and extension activities at www.witf.org/stem.
WITF President and CEO Ron Hetrick helps to assemble the 3,000 resource bags for the “Summer STEM Adventure!” program.
