The Little Library That Could Braves Box Open At Together Community Center

hen the Leola Branch Library closed in the fall of 2020, Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries and head of the Brave Kids Learning Center located in the Together Community Center (TCC), received a windfall. “A (Factory Ministries) donor (provided funds that) allowed us to purchase a number of books (from the Leola Branch sale),” said Neff. “We give out books at all our programs.” Beyond providing free books to Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) students, Neff had dreamed of having a Little Free Library at TCC, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. “We love books and wanted to make it easy for local families to get them,” shared Neff. With enough books to jumpstart such an endeavor, Neff reached out to Evan Lapp to

W

create a structure to hold the books. “(Lapp) is retired and talented and caring,” said Neff, who sent Lapp photos of what she wanted the Little Free Library to look like. In December of 2020, Lapp brought the finished bookcase to TCC. In March of 2021, the Little Free Library at TCC was placed just to the left of the entrance. “We call it the Braves Box,” said Neff. “The idea is to take a book and leave a book or take a book and share it with a friend when you’re done,” said Neff. “That’s what little libraries are for.” Factory Ministries volunteer Marie Glass helped procure a stamp so that each book bears the Little Free Library mark. Neff has divided the bookcase for ease of use. “The bottom shelf is mostly kids’ (books),” she said. “The top shelf is adults and teens. (The Little Free Library) is open anytime.” See Little Library pg 9

Lessons From “Into The Woods Jr.” Cavod Campers To Stage Fairy Tale Mash-Up

Aaron’s Acres Holds Live And Virtual Camps

“It’s so good to be back (at camp) in person,” said Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. During 2020, Aaron’s Acres held virtual camp for 50 campers, but this year, six weeks of weekday summer camp are being held at the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park, along with a two-week virtual camp. The camp has programs for children, adolescents, and adults ages 5 to 21 with developmental disabilities. See Touching Lives pg 4

According to Stephanie Morales, who is making her theatrical directorial debut with Cavod’s “Into the Woods Jr.,” the woods are a metaphor for life. “We have an idea of what life should look like, but let’s look at 2020,” said Morales, pointing out the timeliness of the message. “Life was supposed to look one way, but how do you roll with those punches?” See Lessons pg 5

HOHC: New Location, Same Life-Affirming Mission

PEQUEA VALLEY EDITION

BY ANN MEAD ASH

In the last five years, the ministry originally known as House of His Creation (HOHC) and briefly called Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM), has been through a number of changes. After becoming FORM in 2016, the ministry moved from Lititz Pike to the Brickerville area, but as of late 2019, the name had reverted to HOHC, and in February 2021, the ministry moved to the site of a former bed-andbreakfast at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz. Through all the changes, the mission of the ministry has been to affirm life by providing women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. In its new location, HOHC will continue to provide those services through maternity housing for women age 18 and up especially women leaving abusive situations - who are in the first two trimesters of pregnancy and have been sober for several months. The women must also be willing to consider adoption and parenting plans and to take advantage of growth opportunities, and be educated toward reaching goals.

Client housing for four women is provided on the second floor of the house, where each room has a private bathroom. The family living model includes individualized case management and education about basic life skills, finances, and parenting options, along with recreational activities. Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, noted that a change from former programming models is the aftercare services that are available for one year after the mother is discharged from the program. “That means that I would come and do a home visit and assess how they’re doing,” said Gibbs. “We follow through with things they may have started and provide support so they don’t feel out there and alone.” Mothers who choose to actively parent often need to learn how to do that while working, but according to executive director Matthew Neff, women who make an adoption plan may be especially in need of aftercare. “When a woman makes an adoption plan, it is very emotionally hard,” said HOHC house mom and Matthew’s wife, Callie. “She may need help to navigate the roles and the relationships around

Looking For A Few Good Drivers Paradise Meals On Wheels Seeks Volunteers BY ANN MEAD ASH

“My drivers have been phenomenal through (the) COVID-19 (pandemic), and it has not been easy,” said Marie Glass, Paradise point person for Lancaster Meals on Wheels. Glass, who has been involved with the program for more than a decade, said that the lack of contact has been difficult for both drivers and those who receive meals. “People who were accustomed to visiting with clients can’t talk to them and may not even see them to know they’re all right,” she said, adding that the Paradise volunteer coordinators and drivers have not missed a day of deliveries throughout the pandemic. The Paradise Meals on Wheels program is affiliated with Lancaster Meals on Wheels, which makes about 350 meals per day for area recipients. The Paradise organization is located in a room

in the Together Community Center (TCC), 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Meals provided by the Lancaster program are delivered to TCC each Monday through Friday. One hot meal and one cold meal are included each weekday for each of about 25 clients. Two drivers pick up the meals on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and one driver handles the lighter Tuesday and Thursday routes. Meals are provided for a nominal fee. Clients receive five ounces of meat, five ounces of starch, and three ounces of vegetable a day, and meals are available for recipients who need to follow a customized diet, including those on low-sodium, diabetic, low vitamin K, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets, as well as soft diets, puree diets, and others. Hot meals may include ham and pineapple gravy or a shrimp dish, while cold meals may include a turkey and cheddar or other type of sandwich. Salads are sometimes served in lieu of sandwiches.

CHICKEN BBQ

Currently, the Paradise organization could use a few volunteer drivers. Volunteer time to drive totals about three hours a month. Drivers pick up meals at 8:30 a.m. at TCC and deliver on one of two routes from 9 to 10:30 a.m. “I have 20 drivers and right now I have no substitutes,” noted Glass. Since the Paradise delivery area extends to Lampeter, Glass noted it would be nice to have a driver from that area. The delivery range could include Georgetown, Kinzers, White Horse, the area west to the intersection of routes 896 and 30,

and the region north beyond the village of Intercourse. The program allows many senior residents as well as others recovering from illnesses to remain in their own homes. Those wishing to help or to observe a route may call 717-940-4640.

Aaron’s Acres campers enjoy the Manheim Community pool each weekday morning during the six weeks camp is held.

Camp began June 21, and two-week sessions will be held through Friday, Aug. 6, with the exception of the week that began on July 5 because of the holiday. Paskoff explained that when the organization asked the state for approval to run the camp, COVID-19 restrictions were more stringent, including wearing masks and COVID-19 testing for those who had not been vaccinated. “They are lighter now,” said Paskoff on the second day of camp. She added that the number of campers was limited by restrictions as well. “We would normally have 80 campers at each session, but we had to cut back, so we only have 30,” she said. Calling the in-person camps “ basic,” Paskoff explained that sessions are held each weekday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the morning, campers use the pool in Manheim or take part in therapeutic horseback riding at Greystone Stables in Leola. In addition to swimming, activities include group games, crafts, snacks, and music therapy. Special events will include visits from Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, a petting zoo, an entertainer, and more. “(These are) all activities we can have here (at Manheim),” said Paskoff, who noted that the 1-to-2 child-to-staff ratio is still in effect, and a nurse is on site. “Every child who wants to come can come, and we can meet that child’s needs,” Paskoff stated.

In the spring of 2020, when parents reported that children were having a hard time adjusting to school being closed, Paskoff and program director Elaine Burnett worked to create meaningful virtual and touchpoint experiences for campers. “We had 50 kids on the screen (at virtual camp),” reported Paskoff, who encouraged staff and visitors to wear their Aaron’s Acres yellow T-shirts because she knew the color would comfort campers. “ W hile the activities were going on, staff members would call a name and say, ‘Pick that up to show it. It’s beautiful.’” Virtual activities included cooking, scavenger hunts, bingo, and singing. “It was better than we ever thought,” said Paskoff. Touch-point activities included surprise fall and spring visits to campers’ homes. Dressed in their Aaron’s Acres blue and yellow gear, the five members of the administrative team used the organization’s van to bring each child a special gift. Parents also received hot chocolate in the fall and the makings of ice cream sundaes in the spring. Burnett called ahead, asking parents to send the child to the door when the bell rang. “We wanted it to be a surprise,” said Paskoff. “(Each camper was) so excited that Aaron’s Acres was at their house.” More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

Museum Purchases Book Collection The Pennsylvania Railroad Museum recently purchased the three existing books from J. Arthur Moore’s four-book collection related to his fictional Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia. This railroad shares a name with a real railroad in Nevada. Moore began writing the four books 40 years ago. When “Summer of Two Worlds” was finished, it was released in manuscript form; in 2015, it was first published, and it was recently republished in its third edition. “Summer at Stewart Creek” was recently revised and then released on Dec. 1, 2020, and “Twelfth Winter,” was released on June 1. The remaining book, “Stranded in Snow Shoe,” is due out in early 2022; this book, “Summer of Two Worlds” and “Twelfth Winter” make up the “Summer of Two Worlds” trilogy. “Summer of Two Worlds” has also been released alongside two other titles by Moore: “Journey Into Darkness,” a story in four parts, and “Blake’s Story: Revenge and Forgiveness.” At the time, these three books were released as Civil War and Native American historical fiction for middle grade through adult readers. “Summer at Stewart Creek” includes photo illustrations of an HO-scale model railroad that the author created when envisioning the book’s setting. The cover photos for this book feature the Tahoo, a locomotive in the collection at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. The Tahoo was used on the real-life Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Nevada. All Moore’s titles are available at the Landis Valley Farm Museum, Cricket’s Antiques and Garden Market on Route 322 in Glenmoore, and online at www.jarthurmoore.com, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon. Books can also be ordered through independent book stores.

Morales noted that one challenge of staging the show is that the script only calls for about 15 cast members, but the camp attracted 27 attendees. “We are trying to find new and creative ways to implement everyone and make sure each one has a moment on stage,” she said. However, even before camp had begun, Morales stated, she was having fun deciding which direction to take the quirky script and gathering the cast for a read-through. “The kids all were excited,” she said, noting that when she walked into the gathering, she heard children squealing and laughing. “Seeing people hug each other … we are starting off with a positive, loving environment,” she said. Many of the show’s lessons are meant for audience members of all ages. “At some point in life, we are all ‘in the woods,’” said Morales. “You follow the journeys of all these characters who (are seeking) a specific idea of happiness, (but) as they travel into the woods they discover that ideal happy moment is not what they needed, but only what they wanted.” Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.cavod.org.

Consider Becoming a Tutor

Although educational goals, skill building and job attainment are always on the forefront for adult learners entering our program, skilling up after the pandemic takes on a whole new meaning and will be an important step for many workers who lost their jobs during COVID-19 restrictions. For some, it will mean improving basic literacy in reading, math, or English. For others, it will mean career exploration and sharpening skills to move into postsecondary education or training.

Nearly 30 performers ages 8 to 18 will take part in the show. The Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory will open a new funeral home location with an on-site crematory in Willow Street in 2022. The new location marks the sixth funeral home and third crematory owned by the Snyder family, which will also celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary in 2022. Designed by Cox & Evans Architects, the facilities will be built on nearly three acres of what was previously an office building and farmland. The new 12,500-square-foot building will include 145 parking spaces. Site work design has been done by RGS Associates. Fulton Bank is providing financing for the project, and Benchmark Construction will be the general contractor. The modern funeral home will feature several amenities, including a state-of-the-art

crematory, a spacious lobby, a large chapel with vaulted ceilings and 350 seats, a small chapel with a fireplace and vaulted ceilings, four arrangement offices, a witness room, a comfort room, a picturesque patio and garden located off the large chapel, a monument office, a pre-planning office and a large carport for family comfort. Kelly Gramola Townsend will serve as the supervising funeral director for the new funeral home location. She is a native of Lancaster County and has spent a significant amount of time with her family in Willow Street. The design of the funeral home will combine modern styles with architectural elements commonly found in the Lancaster area, including touches of limestone like those found on Lancaster County barns. Each room will have an open design

and feature large windows to fill gathering spaces with as much natural light as possible.

The public is invited to attend the 28th annual Veterans Concert on Sunday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. The event will take place on the front lawn of the Strasburg Borough Office, 145 Precision Ave., Strasburg. Music will be provided by the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band to honor America’s veterans. The concert will be free to the public. Attendees can bring lawn chairs or blankets on which to sit. In the event of rain, the concert will be relocated to the Strasburg Fire Station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg. The Strasburg Lions Club, in recognition of veterans who are residents of the Strasburg area, will sponsor the event. “I am looking forward to sitting in the shade and enjoying the concert after missing it last year,” said Strasburg Lions Club member Bruce Ryder. “Folks should come to the concert to help honor our surviving veterans and enjoy the patriotic music that we all know so well.”

Once the new funeral home is complete, Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory will operate onsite crematories both north and south of Lancaster city. Benchmark Construction plans to break ground in August and finish the building sometime during the spring of 2022. For more information, contact Chad Snyder at 717-4717921 or chad@snyderfuneral home.com. Learn more about the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory at www.snyderfuneralhome.com.

The band, which will be conducted by Howard Boots, will play patriotic songs, such as “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Songs of Soldiers,” “Sound Off March,” “America the Beautiful,” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Other musical numbers will include “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho,” which will feature Dale Diller on the trombone, and “Sing, Sing, Sing,” with Howard Boots on the clarinet. Other songs include “Rhapsody of Reruns,” “Led Zeppelin Medley,” “Manhattan Beach March,” and “Reflections From the Wall.” The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band is celebrating its 29th anniversary this year. The band was formed in 1992 due to an adult education course. It performs at a variety of local venues throughout the year and currently has about 30 members. The band rehearses weekly throughout the year and welcomes new members.

Experience the Difference

For a long time, it had been the vision of Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, to open a food pantry to the community. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the church shifted staff roles to keep everyone employed, and after receiving a donation of 12,000 pounds of food, the staff decided to act on the vision of opening Mission Food Pantry. On April 9, 2020, the church officially landed the pantry. At first, the staff members were unsure of how to run a food pantry, so they contacted several food pantries across the country for help. Mission Food Pantry operated out of the church’s gymnasi-

um for several months. Knowing the food pantry had to be relocated, the staff renovated four unused classrooms in the facility. By August of 2020, Mission Food Pantry moved into its permanent home. “In the beginning, it was eye opening to see how much need there was in the community,” said Brian Bitler, director of Mission Food Pantry and director of operations and community impact at Mission Church. “We don’t do income verification. If people say they have a need, we want to make the food available to them.” Mission Food Pantry partners with four different food banks in the area and receives donations from several local businesses. “It’s a community effort,” stated Bitler. “ We

have the privilege of housing everything, but we’re all working together to help those in need in our community.” Bitler noted that he and the staff try their best to take the stigma away from accepting help from others. At Mission Food Pantry, Bitler wants everyone to know there is no judgment. “If food is available, we want to help and show the community we love them,” he said. “Help is available, so please come.” Currently, Mission Food Pantry is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. One box of nonperishable food is given to each household once a month. Individuals may pick up their box on any day the food pantry is open. Reservations are not necessary. Individuals are strongly encouraged to bring identification. Those wishing to donate items to Mission Food Pantry may visit www.missionfoodpantry.com for a list of items the pantry needs. Items that are always priorities include canned vegetables and fruit, canned chicken, beans, rice, and cereal. For more information, email foodpantry@mission -church.com or call 717 -393-9600.

Eight-year-old Parker Millhouse hops ahead of his father, Matt, to a pavilion located in a Lancaster park. Without hesitation, he leaps on a picnic table and from there straddles one of the pavilion poles. Using his powerful arms, his full left leg, and his right stump, Parker climbs up the pole. His prosthetic leg lies on the bench of a nearby picnic table. Parker had asked his dad, Matt, to help him remove the device because it was making his stump itch. Parker’s fifth and current prosthesis sports camo on the material that fits around his stump. Matt said Parker enjoys climbing rock walls as well as playing on the neighbor’s trampoline. “He uses his arms all the time,” said Matt. “He’s very muscular.” “I climbed a giant rope,” Parker said of a recent activity. Parker is the poster child for Iron-Leg Corp, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has a goal of

helping raise funds to help children obtain needed prosthetics and receive therapy to learn to use them. “We want to get the more advanced prosthetics (for children),” explained Matt, who told the story of a youngster named Shawn, who lives in York and is currently being helped by the organization. Matt learned about Shawn when he read an article about him online and was able to contact Shawn’s mother. “(In the) article … his mom was saying insurance wouldn’t cover a better hand,” said Matt, who noted that Shawn was using a strap to hold a bow so he could practice playing the violin. “When I called her, she said he got (a moderately more

advanced) hand when she raised money through (crowdsourcing).” Matt explained that insurance will generally cover only the most basic prosthetics for children because they grow so fast. He added that limbs can cost as much as $85,000. The See Golf Tournament pg 10

mechanical hand that IronLeg hopes to purchase for Shawn will have advanced technology, allowing him to control the hand from his stump. Matt said Iron-Leg will need to raise $10,000 to help make that purchase. To raise those funds, IronLeg is planning a benefit golf tournament for Saturday, Sept. 11. Matt acknowledged that the event is being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and noted that three of the organizers are veterans. He said that a large flag will be part of the event. The tournament will be held at The Highlands of Donegal, 650 Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy, and will include a silent auction and dinner. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., and there will be a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Organizers have invited Shawn to be present at the tournament. More information

about the tournament may be found at www.ironleg.org or by emailing info@ironleg.org. According to Matt, the organization started with a charity boxing match hosted by Bucket List Boxers in September of 2020. After some consideration, organizers decided to donate the funds to Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. Parker had gone to Schreiber for physical therapy to learn to use his prosthesis. “We were happy to raise money for them,” said Matt of the center. Currently, Iron-Leg has an eight-member board that meets regularly. Matt hopes to see the board expand in the future, and he has learned of an organization that works to recycle prosthetics that Iron-Leg might be able to partner with. “As we grow, we will try to network,” he said.
