Ambulance Association Sets Chicken Barbecue, Gift Card Sale By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Christiana Community Ambulance Association will hold a benefit drive-through chicken barbecue on
Saturday, July 25. The public will also be able to purchase gift cards to local businesses during the event. In keeping with social distancing guidelines, the chicken barbecue will
be set up as a drive-through at the ambulance association building, 55 Pine Creek Drive, Gap. Purchasers may drive up to the bay to place their order, then pull in to receive their food and drive out the opposite end of the building to exit. No prepurchase orders or tickets are needed. The barbecue will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until sold out. The full chicken dinner will include a chicken leg and thigh, a pit-roasted potato, coleslaw, a roll and butter, a whoopie pie and a beverage. Visitors will also be able to purchase a barbecue chicken leg and thigh only. Sub sandwiches and ham and cheese sandwiches will also be available a la carte. Due to COVID-19, the ambulance association was forced to cancel their annual spring auction.

Philip Goropoulos, president of CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health (CHI), is firm when discussing the beliefs of the organization’s board concerning the new St. John Neumann School for Children and Families that CHI is building on Locust Street in Columbia. “Everything we offer should be available to everybody,” said Goropoulos. “Every student will have every opportunity within the center. Nothing will cost extra. It will all be included.” The school, which will initially accommodate 60 children
much-needed personal protection equipment for our staff,” Wright said. “Call volumes have changed. We put our staff at risk for infection working with the public and taking care of patients. We’ve had to step up our measures for safety and sanitation. Without our large fundraisers, it really has affected our operating budget to keep the doors open 24/7.” Christiana Community Ambulance Association is a nonprofit organization that is in service 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the help of volunteer and paid staff members. The company serves southeastern Lancaster County, as well as parts of western Chester County. ranging in age from six weeks to 5 years old, will embody a new perspecive on care. “Our familyfocused approach to child care revamps the traditional model,” said Goropoulos, who noted the goal will be not just preparing children for school, but helping get them ready for life by making health and wellness part of the curriculum. Special benefits at the school that will be offered to all students and families will include a family wellness coach and a family wellness caseworker. Carol Johnston, family wellness coach, will meet with every family that comes into the center. See New School pg 7

Since some auction donors had already contributed gift cards, those are now posted at www.ccaa52.com, and the community is invited to support the organization by purchasing them at face value. The gift cards cover a wide variety of entertainment, restaurants, retail shops and experiences. The gift cards will be available to purchase online until the day of the chicken barbecue. Those not sold online will be offered for sale at the barbecue. Any remaining gift cards will be reposted on the website. “We typically bring in $18,000 to $20,000 for the auction; that’s our huge money reserve for the year,” EMS chief Ashley Wright said. Cavod Academy’s summer musical theater camp for youths ages 10 to 18 has yet to begin, but Alexander Weaver, who will make his first directorial solo effort for the organization, is looking forward to overseeing the camp and producing “Frozen Jr.” at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Camp will be held at the venue from Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 14. “The fun is being able to teach students and interacting with the cast and the production crew,” said Weaver. “I love summer camps, (especially) the feel of being able to put on a show, play games, and just
connect.” Four performances of the musical, based on the 2018 Broadway version of the Disney animated film, will be held for the public at The Junction Center on
Saturday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug 16, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. “Frozen Jr.” brings royal sisters Elsa and Anna, along with the land of Arendelle, where they live, to life on the stage. The See Cavod Camp pg 2

Cavod Camp from pg 1 junior version includes songs from animated film such as “Do You Want to Build a Snowman? and “Let It Go, along with five new songs, which were written specifically for the Broadway production. Weaver said that a cast of 30 to 40 members is preferable, but a larger cast can be accommodated. Weaver said the show was chosen by Connie Dienner, executive director and founder of Cavod, and Monica DePaul, artistic director of theater. “It became available, and it’s very popular with children, said Weaver of the selection. Show staff will include Ric Weaver as assistant director, Bente Weaver as camp manager, and Cassidy Martin as stage manager. Amy Rau will serve as music director, assisted by Hannah Rau, and Stephanie Morales will be the choreographer. Lights and special effects will be the responsibility of Shannon Seip and Lee Shaeffer will oversee sound. Emily Johnson will provide makeup and hair design, and Tyson Severin will be in charge of props. Area families are invited to make the trip to Manheim to see the show and see where WJTL broadcasts. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may also be available at the door.

Nearly 4,000 policyholder members joined with Lancaster Countybased Goodville Mutual to donate more than $210,000 in support of food banks, first responders, health professionals and international organizations responding to COVID-19 through the company’s Safe@home program. The Safe@home program was created by Goodville after leaders in the company recognized that people were driving less as a result of the stay-at-home order. The Lancaster County-based mutual insurance company issued its auto insurance policyholders a 15% Safe@home credit on April and May auto premiums for a total of $1.75 million in policyholder relief. In addition, members were given the option to donate their credit to frontline COVID-19 responders in the
eight states Goodville members live in or internationally. A total of 3,957 credits were donated by members resulting in $110,362 in credits donated, all of which will be distributed to food banks, first responders and health professionals, as well as international charities providing COVID19 relief. Goodville will fulfill its commitment to match those donations up to $100,000 to double the impact of its members’ donations. Members who chose to donate their credit could direct their donation to the category of their choice. Forty-eight percent chose regional food banks, 26% chose a “where needed most” category, 21% selected first responders and 5% directed their credit toward international relief. Goodville distributed the funds in June to regional food

portal, which opened on July 20, are available at https://recovery lancaster.com. The website is the primary resource for grant funding, personal protective equipment (PPE), public health issues, data analysis, and other information related to the $33.4 million Lancaster County Economic Recovery Plan approved by the Board of Lancaster County Commissioners in May. Phase two of the Recovery and Sustainability Fund offers $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster County-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees. The grant portal opened for applications at 8 a.m. on July 20 and will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 24. Phase two of funding will offer two sets of criteria, one for businesses with 20 or fewer employees and one for businesses with up to 100 employees. Businesses that previously applied and did not qualify are encouraged to review the new criteria. Grants will not be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis; individuals have five days to submit applications. Businesses are also encouraged to review the criteria for submissions on the aforementioned website prior to July 20. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be sent to the Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. This round of funding follows phase one, which awarded a total of $10.4 million to 423 companies earlier in July. In addition to funding, businesses with 100 or fewer employees can register for a free COVID19 supply kit, gain public health information, and subscribe to a newsletter for email updates on the aforementioned website. Economic Recovery Plan funding comes from the $95 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that Lancaster County received from the federal government. This funding will be used to help to provide a positive path forward for the local economy, which is fueled in part by more than 12,000 businesses with 100 or fewer employees.

New School from pg 1 grant making to organizations that were working with children in addition to our dental program,” said Goropoulos, who noted that the board was looking for ways do more for children. “(They wanted) a strategy that would transform how communities were responding to health and developing health care habits,” he recalled. Healthy Columbia worked to identify areas common to healthy communities, including housing and neighborhoods, food access, early childhood education, and access to health and health care. “These are the four components to impact a community … to put that community in a better position to be healthy and thrive,” said Goropoulos.

In response to what the board members learned, CHI decided to build a school. “It’s a seven- to 10-year investment to build these structures and programs, and then they become supported by the community,” said Goropoulos, who noted that first discussion of the project dates back to December 2017. The project was approved in 2018, and the organization then purchased the building at 401 Locust St., along with the adjacent parking lot at 403 Locust. CHI broke ground for the school in May 2019. “We gutted the second and third floors of the existing building and added 10,000 square feet to both floors over the top of the parking lot,” said Goropoulos. COVID-19 restrictions halted construction in March. “ We were a few weeks away from the building being finished when they shut down,” said Goropoulos, who noted that despite the shutdown, the school was due to be completed at the end of June and is now slated to open in early November. The organization is working hard to meet new guidelines while offering high value to participating families. “If we can support family functioning to reduce the possibility of adverse childhood experiences, the savings to the community and the positive health results to children will be astronomical,” said Goropoulos. Readers who want to learn more about CHI and the new school in Columbia may visit https://stjosephchildrens health.org.

“(Johnston) will help families learn to work within the community and with one another,” said Goropoulos, who added that every family will have an assessment. “We will evaluate how the child is doing, what family dynamics look like, and areas of potential improvement, challenges they might be facing, and strategies (they could utilize),” said Goropoulos, who added that families will have access to these services as long as they are enrolled. If necessary, the family could be referred to a family wellness caseworker, who will act as a resource. The idea for a school grew out of the Healthy Columbia Project CHI engaged in more than two years ago. “We used to do small

PSPCA Offers Pet Food Assistance The Lancaster County Community Foundation in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster County awarded the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) Lancaster Center a $2,000 grant to assist pet owners in need throughout the region. The funds have been put into action to provide pet food as families face the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus. The PSPCA Lancaster Center, 848 S. Prince St., Lancaster, is working to assist pet families in need and has provided hundreds of pounds of dry food and countless pounds of wet food to its clients. With other area resources shuttered, the PSPCA has worked to ensure that anyone who needs assistance feeding their dogs or cats during this time receives it. To ensure safety of the PSPCA Lancaster staff and the public, all pet food pantry pickups are done without physical contact. Families in need of assistance are asked to email lancaster@ pspca.org, after which they will be contacted to determine their specific needs. They will then be given a time to pick up food at the center. The food is bundled and left outside the building with the identifying information of its recipients.
“There has always been a need for access to pet food, but through this pandemic that need has increased dramatically,” said PSPCA Lancaster Center site director Lindsay High. “It is always our goal to support families and keep pets happy and healthy in their homes. Through this health and economic crisis, we are more dedicated than ever.” A fund has been created to purchase pet food and essential supplies. Donations will be used to continue the PSPCA’s efforts to provide resources for pet owners in need. Those who would like to contribute may visit w w w. p s p c a . o r g / c o m m u n i t y petfund. The PSPCA is a nonprofit organization headquartered at 350 E. Erie Ave., Philadelphia. Since 1867, the PSPCA has been dedicated to preventing animal cruelty and rescuing animals from abuse and neglect. The organization’s lifesaving programs for animals include a low-cost veterinary clinic, low-cost spay and neuter services, pet adoption facilities, and the PSPCA Humane Law Enforcement Department. For more information about adopting, donating, The Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center received a grant to or volunteering, readers may help families in need feed their pets. Patient First now offers COVID-19 antibody testing at all its medical centers on a walk-in basis. Testing is available from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Appointments are not needed for antibody testing. The antibody test is used to determine if someone previously had COVID-19 and not to diagnose an active infection. Antibody testing is for patients who believe they may have had COVID-19 in the past, who are not currently experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, and who are at least age 5. Patient First recommends being tested at least 14 days after onset of symptoms of COVID-19 or 14 days after possible exposure, as it may take as long as two weeks for antibodies to develop. The COVID-19 antibody test used at Patient First tests to see if the blood has antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies may be found in the blood when the body is responding or has responded to an infection, such as COVID19. Antibodies may give full or partial immunity to the virus to which they develop. However, it is not known at this time how long the body will have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 or whether they actually give immunity to future infections from this virus. Blood samples will be sent to a third-party reference lab for antibody testing. Results will generally be available in about two to five days. Patients may opt to receive their result via text message. Otherwise, patients will be contacted by phone about the result. For most patients, there is no out-of-pocket expense for antibody testing. For insured patients, the visit will be submitted to patients’ insurance plans. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. The lab will determine what, if anything, it bills the patient. For those with symptoms of COVID-19 and those who wish to determine if they have an active infection, Patient First also offers drive-up COVID-19 active virus testing at designated centers by appointment. Appointments for testing are made by calling a select designated testing center. Updates about testing sites, instructions about how to make an appointment, and other information is available at www.patientfirst.com/ covid-19-testing. All Patient First Medical Centers remain open on a walkin basis from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily for patients who have an urgent need for medical or injury care.
