Paradise Bible Fellowship Schedules Block Party By Ann Mead Ash

In the summer of 1953, when a group of Paradise residents purchased the former Episcopal church at 3092 Lincoln Highway East, located at the corner of Route 30 and Singer Avenue in Paradise, the new congregation began holding tent meetings in the parking lot. Fast forward more than 60 years, and Paradise Bible Fellowship Church is still inviting members of the community to connect in the church parking lot, but this time the event is the church’s annual block party. The 2018 Paradise Bible Fellowship Church block party will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature free food, games, and entertainment. Last year, the block party became a kickoff event for the church’s 5-Day Club, a ministry of Child Evangelism See Block Party pg 2

GOTR Fall Registration To Open New Curriculum Planned For Third Through Fifth Grades By Ann Mead Ash

Members of Paradise Bible Fellowship Church who are planning the church’s sixth annual block party on Aug. 4 include (from left) pastor Mark Morrison, Sue Homsher, Nancy Grossman, and Richard Grossman. The event will include free entertainment, food, games, and face painting.

During the spring 2018 semester, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster boasted teams in every school district in the county. Jennifer West, program director for GOTR Lancaster, expects about 850 girls in elementary and middle school to sign up to benefit from the program in the new school year, noting that many of those will be introduced to the new curriculum, available to girls in the thirdthrough fifth-grade program this fall. Girls who take part in the fall session will complete the program by completing a 5K at Millersville University in November. See GOTR pg 7

located at Emmaus Road Café, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, will discuss how to navigate unexpected family secrets on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. The program, titled “Family Secrets: What Mama Never Told Us,” will feature an exclusive filmed story of a woman who discovered a missing family member. While going through some paperwork at her parents’ house, she found an old, faded form from an adoption agency, providing an inkling there was some kind of secret to be told. Participants will receive practical tips on handling a wide variety of family secrets. Admission is free. For details, contact 717-473-9115 or ltclancaster@gmail.com.

Miller’s Natural Foods, 2888 Miller Lane, Bird-in-Hand, is planning a customer appreciation event to celebrate 50 years of serving the local community. The celebration began on July 30 and will continue through Saturday, Aug. 4. Customers will receive extra savings storewide, including 10 percent off everything. Customers will receive free gifts with every purchase, and door prizes will be awarded. Free balloons will be available for children. On Friday, Aug. 3, and Saturday, Aug. 4, vendors will be on-site with product samples, gift baskets, and information. In the 1960s, Christ Miller’s wife had developed health problems, so the family began visiting a local health food store that offered reflexology. The Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association launched a recruitment campaign this year in an effort to meet the growing need for volunteer members of the 67 fire departments and companies throughout the county.

LCFCA Seeks Volunteers With Recruitment Campaign By Chelsea Peifer

Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people - and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and

counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its numbers have slowly dwindled. Block Party from pg 1 Fellowship, which will be held at the church this year from Monday, Aug. 6, through Friday, Aug. 10, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. each day. Children ages 5 to 12 are welcome at the 5-Day Club, which will offer Bible lessons, memory verses, songs, games, prizes, and other fun activities. Last year, up to 15 children attended the club, and organizers hope to see up to 40 this year. The theme of the Aug. 4 block party is “For Such a Time as This.” Pastor Mark Morrison noted that the church members

want the community to know that the church is aware of the challenges that families face and that the church will strive to provide help and comfort. Morrison listed issues including financial difficulties, family problems, and substance abuse among those challenges. “We want to be available (to offer help and safety),” he stated. “We know everyone can’t be here on Sunday morning, but our desire is to connect (with area residents).” He added that the church aims to be a community

that displays Christ’s love. According to Sue Homsher, who organizes the 5-Day Club and the church’s Wednesday night program during the school year, games at the block party will include mini golf, whack-afrog, a sponge throw, and more. Children who participate in the games will receive tickets for prizes. A bounce house and dunk tank will be on-site, and crafts and face painting will be offered. Entertainment will be provided by The DKers, a team of jugglers who will perform at noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. Morrison pointed out that this will be a return performance for the local duo,

who first met when they were both students at Hinkletown Mennonite School. Free foods that will be given away at the event will include hot dogs, popcorn, chips, water, and ice cream. Admission and all activities are free, and the event is open to the public. Parking during the block party will be available at nearby Grace Point Church. Readers who would like more information may call 717-687-7577.

GOTR is a youth development program that works with girls to help them find their potential and pursue their dreams. The goal of the program is to give girls access to their inner strength by working with trained coaches in small groups. During the program, girls in elementary and middle school are encouraged to develop skills and habits they can rely on throughout life. GOTR uses physical activity coupled with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development. GOTR is not a competitive running program, but the curriculum uses running to teach life skills and promote

health. The middle school program goes by the name Heart and Sole. West described the new curriculum as having the same great mission, but utilizing new activities and exercises. “The first four weeks, lessons focus on the girl herself,” explained West, who noted that participants will delve into what makes each girl a great friend or helper and discovering what she likes about herself. “They really look inward,” she said. During the second four weeks, the girls take what they have learned and apply it to working to function as a team, focusing on cooperation, collaboration, and completing projects together. During the remainder of the program, the team undertakes a community impact project, which gives coaches an opportunity to

talk about how the individual is part of a greater world and how to make an impact. Girls who wish to take part in the fall program may do so through a lottery registration program at http://gotrlancaster.org. Lottery registration will open on Wednesday, Aug. 8. On Friday, Aug. 17, the computer lottery will choose girls at random for teams at each participating school. Following the lottery, registration will reopen and participants will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis until a team is full through Tuesday, Sept. 11. The first GOTR practices at area schools will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4. According to West, girls who would like to register can find a list of teams on the previously mentioned website. “If you don’t see your school listed as a team on our website, we will not have a team there unless we find coaches,” West explained. “Don’t assume there will be a team there in the fall because there was

one in the spring.” To offer more teams at more schools, West and GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson are recruiting coaches. “The coaching opportunity is one you will never forget,” stated Johnson. “(If an individual) has an interest in being a role model for girls and helping to pave the way to their futures, contact us,” she added. According to West and Johnson, coaching is an investment of less than four hours per week. Teams meet directly after school for 90-minute practices two afternoons a week, and there is a short amount of preparation time required for reading over the lesson. Head coaches must be at least 18 years of age, but assistant coaches can be in ninth through 12th grades. Individuals who are interested in coaching are asked to complete a volunteer application by clicking on the volunteer tab at http://gotrlancaster.org. Training sessions will be held for volunteer coaches.

Bookworms from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash

R014753

When an organization collects 40,000 books for a sale and endeavors to sell all those books in four days, drastic sales measures may be employed. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) takes on such a challenge with by-the-box discounts beginning on the third day of its annual Bookworm Frolic. On the final day, the box price will be even lower. Although LMHS provides boxes, bookworms may bring their own. “The rule is for it to count, you have to be able to lift (the box of books) yourself,” explained Joel Nofziger, LMHS director of communications, who added jokingly, “Don’t bring a refrigerator box.” This year’s LMHS Bookworm Frolic will take place at LMHS, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, from Wednesday, Aug. 15, through Saturday, Aug. 18. The Frolic will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day except for Aug. 18, when the sale will close at 4 p.m. According to Jon Weaver-Kreider, used book manager for LMHS, who is helming this year’s sale, books that have been collected for the Frolic fit into more than 20 categories. “We have a lot of theology and religion, history and politics,” said WeaverKreider, who added that he had counted 113 boxes of children’s books. Weaver-Kreider listed cookbooks, fiction, novels, and Christian fiction among the other categories that will be well represented at the sale. A number of foreign language books in German were also donated for the Frolic. While most of the books available for purchase will be set up outside the LMHS building under a tent, the music section and new books, which will be sold at special discount prices during the sale, will be located inside. Weaver-Kreider noted that food at this year’s sale will be provided by food trucks. “On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we will have Italian sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, and hot dogs, and on Saturday, we will have breakfast burritos, burgers, sandwiches, saffron and jasmine rice, kabobs, and Costa Rican chicken sandwiches,” said Weaver-Kreider, who added that the food trucks were selected for the diverse menus they offer. According to Nofziger, nothing donated for the sale will end up in the trash. “At the very end of the sale, we allow organizations to bid by category,” Nofziger explained. “On Saturday, if there’s a category an organization is interested in, they can make a bid to buy all the books in that category that do not sell, and they just have to come and collect them.” Organizations that have an interest in buying a lot of books may contact Weaver-Kreider at 717-393-9745. Items that are not purchased are recycled to raise funds for Mennonite Central Committee Relief and Development projects. A number of volunteers help make the Bookworm Frolic a success. Weaver-Kreider calculated that 20 volunteers are needed daily to help during the sale, and that about 100 volunteers are involved in the overall event. During the year, up to 30 volunteers help sort incoming book donations. The sale attracts about 4,000 visitors annually, raising up to $40,000 for the organization. All funds raised by the event become part of the general operating budget of the historical society. Readers who would like to learn more about the historical society may visit www.lmhs.org. Pictured on front: Jon Weaver-Kreider (left) and Joel Nofziger have helped to collect 40,000 books for the annual Bookworm Frolic, to be held at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society from Aug. 15 through 18.

“Discipleship sessions were a big area of focus,” said Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) Kingdom Team director Krista Martin when asked to highlight what is new for the program this year. In addition to participating in activities and sessions designed to strengthen individual discipleship journeys, Kingdom Teams provided opportunities for youth groups to serve students with refugee status and other non-native English speakers enrolled in the Leap Into Language Program, offered by IU13 Community Education’s Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds Junior High School in the School District of Lancaster. In July, youth groups from Mellinger Mennonite Church in Lancaster, Strasburg Mennonite Church, Petra Church in New Holland, and Iglesia Cristiana Vida Abundante, Ministerios Peniel in Ephrata led clubs, crafts, English conversation activities, sports and games, and other activities that built community and exemplified the love of Christ. Martin elaborated on the new discipleship sessions, saying, “I focused on putting together solid lesson plans for the Kingdom Team staff to work from.” The new discipleship training is the foundation of this year’s experiences, providing opportunities for participants to grow as individuals through an interactive and engaging curriculum. One of the Leap Into Language students, Younis, 9, returned for his second summer. He said that a friend told him about the program. EMM staff members observed the growth of returning students like Younis. “I can really see how much he has grown,” said Angie Earl, EMM community engagement coordinator, referring to the English-language familiarity of another student who was participating in the program for his third year. “He is much more comfortable interacting with others and has a huge smile on his face as he greets people, whereas the first year he was so quiet and didn’t want to engage much at all with others.” During activities like Ultimate Frisbee, origami, and Minute-to-Win-It games, students were encouraged to practice speaking English with youth group participants. In addition to benefiting the English-language learners, the Kingdom Team program was beneficial for youth group members. Mellinger Mennonite Church youth group member Brenda Weaver shared that Kingdom Teams helped the youths to grow in their leadership skills. After two days of watching Kingdom Team staff members lead the activities, Mellinger youths had the opportunity to take the reins and direct the activities for the Leap Into Language students. Ellen Lapp has served two years as a Kingdom Team staff member. When she heard that there was an entirely new Kingdom Team staff this summer, Lapp decided to join the team again this year. “I thought that having somebody from last year that (previous participants) already knew and somewhat respected would be pretty helpful,” she remarked. Lapp’s familiarity with many of the students has been a significant asset to Kingdom Teams. Continuing her vocational journey, Lapp will be taking another EMM assignment as a mission intern this fall in East Africa. In a variety of ways, Kingdom Teams are encouraging personal growth: Students in the Leap Into Language Program

live a healthier lifestyle. As a result of this new knowledge, Christ opened his first store in 1968 on the family farm. Ten years later, the store moved into its second building, which encompassed approximately 3,000 square feet. In 2007, the store was able to move into the current 10,000-square-foot building. This building features skylights, which provide ample light during the daylight hours; gas lights for evening hours as needed; and a solar hot water system on the roof. The family-owned and -operated store is stocked with fresh, organic produce, as well as local milk, cheese, and raw milk. The aisles house bulk dried fruits, nuts, various beans, seeds and grains, special

flour, gluten-free snacks, pasta, and more. Christ noted that the store will soon carry fresh (not frozen) local organic grass-fed meat. The store’s offerings also include local raw honey, Pennsylvania maple syrup, and a large variety of spices, as well as fruit juices, coconut oil, groceries, vitamins, health and beauty aids, herbs, teas, supplements, and more. Owners Christ and Levi Miller are excited to invite the local community to enjoy the festivities during the customer appreciation event and learn more about living a healthier lifestyle. Teams from pg 9 are becoming more comfortable with English, youth group participants are learning how to lead, and Kingdom Team staff members are gaining the skills to step into new ventures after this summer. “Kingdom Teams provide opportunities for growth on many levels and for all involved. Youth group participants have been challenged to know the transforming love of Christ for themselves and then to share it with the world around them,” Martin explained. “Through participating in the Leap Into Language Program, the youths can have times to practice what they are learning in the morning discipleship sessions and can discover many Godgiven talents they did not know they had.” For more information about the Kingdom Team program, call EMM at 717898-2251 or visit www.emm.org.

are needed to help with administrative functions, to serve as fire police to direct traffic, and to assist with exterior firefighting work. No special skillset is required, as training will be provided. For Lisa Breneman, who volunteers with Fire Department Mount Joy, it was seeing her father volunteer that sparked an interest in her. “Initially, I had approached it to just become a driver only and help them get out during daytime calls,” explained Breneman. That soon grew into an interest to do more than drive, as Breneman said she wanted to learn how to run in and assist those who were injured, and help extinguish the fires. That interest eventually led into a career for Breneman, who now works full-time as a fire investigator while continuing to volunteer locally. “It’s rewarding to help people in the community, to see that sense of relief in their eyes when you arrive on the scene, and try to calm the situation at hand,” shared Breneman. Providing fire prevention training at schools and watching the children’s excitement is another part of volunteering that Breneman loves. “You feel a sense of purpose when helping to serve the community, and I’d love to see more young people volunteer,” Breneman said. Most fire companies offer junior membership opportunities for students age 16 and older. Artus and Breneman both praised the camaraderie at their respective fire stations. “The fire service is a camaraderie and a brother and sisterhood,” Hagelgans remarked. “We are a family, and we will be your family.” To sign up to volunteer, readers may visit www.becomeafirefighter.org.

(LCFCA) Recruitment and Retention Committee spokesman Duane Hagelgans said that while some stations do very well, most are struggling to have and maintain enough members to provide adequate service. “Some municipalities are seeing a need and must pay for firefighters; (however), there are many municipalities in Lancaster County that can survive and provide adequate protection with volunteers, if we have enough members of our communities willing to make the sacrifice to help their neighbors,” Hagelgans stated. Earlier this year, several Lancaster County volunteer firefighters and rescuers shared their experiences in on-camera interviews for videos as part of an ongoing countywide recruitment effort led by the LCFCA to draw in volunteers for the county’s 67 volunteer fire companies and search-and-rescue squads. The videos may be viewed by searching for “Lancaster County Volunteer Recruitment” at www.youtube.com. Hagelgans said that the LCFCA has seen an uptick in volunteer inquiries since the videos were released but is still well below the number of volunteers needed. The campaign has also included advertisements on the internet and television and at movie theaters, with radio ads coming soon. “If we can find people to give a little, we can all work together for the safety of our communities,” said Hagelgans, adding that individuals should not feel like they are signing up for a lifetime commitment either - just a few years will make a difference. Plus, Hagelgans emphasized that not all volunteers run into burning buildings. Willing individuals

Attendees may meet the teachers, review the curricula, tour the campus, and meet school parents. The open house will allow attendees to expedite the enrollment process for the upcoming school year. LCCS is a Christian school for students in preschool through 12th grade. Two models of education are available. The traditional model for elementary and secondary students provides a comprehensive program with instruction provided on campus five days per week. This model includes academics that are taught with a biblical perspective to help students grow academically and spiritually through teacher interaction while partnering with parents throughout the process. As an extension, high school students have experiential opportunities for growth through the Academies of STEM; Entrepreneurship; the Arts; and Community, Outreach and Service.

The University Model at LCCS offers an alternative solution for students in kindergarten through grade six whose parents desire for their children to be at home while also benefiting from the services of a Christian school. University Model students are on campus part-time. Students in kindergarten through grade two spend two days per week on campus. Those in grades three through six are on campus three days per week. The remaining days of the week, referred to as satellite days, are spent completing teacher-directed academic activities at home under the guidance of parents. Students’ educational experiences are also outreach oriented. Through its values and heritage, the school seeks to empower students to be confident in whom God has created them to be. LCCS has been providing a Christian education for more than 65 years in Lancaster County. Reservations are requested by visiting www.lccs.cc/openhouse. For information about enrollment, readers may contact Diane Dissmore, director of admissions, at 717-556-0711, ext. 214.
