Catherine O’Sullivan, director of the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL), 31 Center St., Intercourse, has been thinking for some time about getting a tortoise for the library. When Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary presented “Rocketing Reptiles” at the Salisbury Township Branch Library, 835 Houston Run Drive, Suite 220, Gap, on July 1, O’Sullivan decided to ask Rothacker if he had any tortoises in need of rescuing. Rothacker told O’Sullivan he had received an email just that morning from someone who needed help placing a 3-year-old Russian tortoise. “(The owner) was looking for a home (for the tortoise) because they traveled a lot,” explained O’Sullivan. “I said (to Rothacker that) I wanted to adopt it, but I will let it live (at PVPL).” O’Sullivan is responsible for the tortoise. “No library funds are being used (for its care),” she explained. “It’s for education.”

HOPE International Schedules Annual Golf Outing

Annie Schmus (left), special events intern with HOPE International, and HOPE founder Jeff Rutt (right) took a ride on an aerial lift to display a tally board showing how much has been raised by the organization’s annual golf outing. This year’s outing will be held on Sept. 13. Past outings have raised more than $300,000 to help clients in 16 countries.
Many years ago, Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church, 4833 Division Highway, East Earl, began holding a summer fundraiser. The Peach Festival organizers focused on baking peach pies and preparing other peach-flavored treats to sell at the event. In 2016, the name of the Peach Festival was changed to Peach Fest and Family Fun, and a variety of activities for children were added to the event. The 2019 Peach Fest, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will include a flea

O’Sullivan rehomed the tortoise, who happens to be female, in a terrarium in an open area of the library. She explained that the tortoise should grow to be 10 to 12 inches long and that she could live to be 60 years old. “She is very low maintenance,” said O’Sullivan, who explained that the heat lamp that runs over the top of the terrarium is one of the most important facets of care. “It’s on a timer, so she gets 12 hours of heat, and then it is off for 12 hours,” explained O’Sullivan. In the terrarium, the tortoise’s food bowl is filled with a colorful combination of vegatables. “She loves kale and carrots,” said O’Sullivan, who explained that a staff member brings kale from her organic farm for the tortoise. O’Sullivan will come in to tend the tortoise when the library is closed, and she will take her home with her when inclement weather threatens. Staff members have lined up to volunteer to care for the tortoise when O’Sullivan goes on vacation. The tortoise seems to have everything she needs to live a long and healthy life in the library, but she does not have a name. O’Sullivan and the rest of the library staff are hoping to remedy that by holding a naming See Pet Tortoise pg 4

Boycan noted that it is the design of the savings groups to give people a way to lift themselves from poverty. “The microfinancing and savings groups restore dignity and help break the cycle of poverty,” said Boycan. “People feel terrible when they are unable to take care of their families, (but) you see their dignity restored when they realize, ‘I am capable. God has given me the gifts that I need, and I can (take care of my family).’” Last year, HOPE exceeded its goal of raising $350,000 from the tournament. Much of the money raised by the tournament is donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of sponsorship levels are available to businesses. One package includes a HOPE trip to the Dominican Republic for 12 participants. Currently, the 2019 tournament has raised more than $200,000. Readers who would like to take part in the tournament may visit www.hopeinter national.org/take-action/event -detail/19th-annual-golf-tourn ament. and attend the awards dinner. According to Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE, the tournament can comfortably accommodate a total of 230 golfers. Boycan explained that HOPE will reach even more countries by entering a partnership with Compassion International to train representatives in savings group programs. This year, HOPE will train Compassion staff members in Rwanda, Thailand, Kenya, Indonesia, and Tanzania. “We want to make a big difference. We want to collaborate for the kingdom,” explained Boycan. Rutt noted that it is important to train those who are indigenous to an area to oversee savings groups. He shared the story of Rosalie, a woman in the Philippines who was asked by a HOPE representative about her dreams. “She said she would love a house, but it is too big a dream,” relayed Rutt. “The indigenous leader, Florine, talked to her about big dreams and small steps toward them.” Rutt explained that the leader can relate to those in the groups in a realistic way. “(Rosalie’s) group leader can say, ‘I grew up here, and I know what you’re going through,’” explained Rutt.

While those figures are impressive, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, prefers to talk about the people the organization has helped. “It’s not about the numbers, it’s about guys like Nico,” said Rutt, referring to a rice farmer Rutt met in the Philippines during late 2018 and early 2019. Nico, who lives on the island of Tacloban, has a dream of sending his sons to college. When his fishing business was wiped out in a 2013 typhoon that hit Tacloban and killed 7,000, Nico learned how

St. John Center Schedules Anniversary Events LSO, Fulton Theatre Sign Agreement
Pastor Thomas Darr stands between St. John Center Lutheran Church in East Earl and the cemetery located across Reading Road. The church is celebrating its 200th anniversary with a number of musical events, including a polka mass on Aug. 11 at 10:15 a.m. St. John Center was placed in December of 1819, but earlier evidence of church activity is found in a gravestone, which is dated 1777. The gravestone marks the burial place of a child named Elisabet, who was a daughter of one of the founders of the church. At the time that the cornerstone was placed, the single pastor served seven area congregations, with St. John at the “center.” The church was used by both Lutheran and Reformed congregations until 1969. The original building was replaced by the present one in 1872, and in the
1950s an addition was constructed at the west end. That addition now houses the altar alcove and restrooms on the lower level. At the same time the addition was built, a Good Shpeherd painting in the church was replaced by one of Christ ascending into heaven. In June, the church held a Music Sunday event, which pastor Thomas Darr said was well attended. “We have had good response so far,” he noted. “We had nearly a packed house for Music Sunday.” For more information, readers may visit http://sjclutheran.org or call 717-445-5505.

As the celebration of the 200th anniversary of St. John Center Lutheran Church continues, events are planned for dates in August, September, and the autumn months. The church, located at 599 Reading Road, East Earl, will host a polka mass, old-timey service, community hymn sing, and more to observe its 200th birthday. The polka mass, which will be celebrated by the Rev. Glenn Beard, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 10:15 a.m. The old-timey service is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10:15 a.m. According to Vickie Kissinger, director of the choir and the bell choir at St. John Center, the community hymn sing will feature selections by the combined choirs of St. John Center; Mellinger’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, under the direction of Carl Tobias; and Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, under the direction of Greg Gehman. The event will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22. Additional activities will include an organ recital by Dr. Robert
Horton, organist and choirmaster of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. The event will feature Horton on the organ and harpsichord. The church will also host an evening of scary Bible stories in the graveyard on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 9, lyric tenor Dr. Jun Chon will return to give a 3 p.m. concert with Kissinger, titled “Together Again.” Chon took part in the church’s annual Music Sunday event in June. Chon, who lives in Ephrata, is a vocalist who sings at concerts, weddings, and other events. He and his wife, Joyce, have three daughters. Chon, a graduate of Tulane University, earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The duo of Barley & Steele will open the 2019 Strasburg Bluegrass Festival on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 6:30 p.m. on the campus of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St. This team of Kenny Barley and Braden Steele performs a mix of country, bluegrass, gospel, and folk music from the likes of Ricky Skaggs, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Merle Travis, John Denver, and The Animals. “We’ve known each other for a long time. We both attended Pequea Church,” Steele said, explaining the group’s origin. “We actually competed against each other years ago in the Millersville’s Got Talent show. Kenny’s dad suggested we put our talents together, and it wasn’t long after that we formed Barley & Steele.” Aug. 10 will not be the first time the duo has performed at First Presbyterian. “Our first gig was a coffeehouse right there at the First Presbyterian Church in Strasburg, three weeks after we started playing together,” Steele said.

A good share of Lancaster County experienced a devastating storm on May 28 and KAUFFMAN’S orchards were not spared. Hail, driven by a strong wind, fell for about ten minutes - plenty of time to permanently mar many, many (most?) of the tiny fruitlets on our trees. It is to be some of the worst damage our Orchard has seen in over 70+ years! So although this year our fruit may look less than perfect on the outside, nothing has changed on the inside. KAUFFMAN’S peaches are just as delicious, and just as nutritious, as ever you experienced in years gone by! So come in and enjoy some delicious, juicy peaches all season long at a great, great price. 3097 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird in Hand, PA 17505 • 717-768-7112 www.kauffmansfruitfarm.com Mon.-Thurs. 7:00am-5:30pm, Friday 7:00am-8:30pm, Saturday 7:00am-5:00pm, Closed Sundays

Moores Memorial Library Hosts Princess Story Time By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
As a special event during the Summer Reading Program, Princess Brooke from Dutch Wonderland paid a visit to
Moores Memorial Library in Christiana on July 23. Princess Brooke, portrayed by Rebecca Rand, came to read to the children and engage them with interactive fun.
reading, we get to take a trip around the world, and we learn so much, and the kids get to interact with our story. That’s always so fun.” As she read the book, when there were opportunities for the youngsters to react or join in an action, she encouraged them to do so. “They were standing up, they were jumping like kangaroos, they were climbing like panda bears and making monkey noises,” Rand said. “It was perfect.” Story Time With the Princess is held three times each day at Dutch Wonderland, a children’s amusement park in Lancaster, and it is also a valued feature at local libraries. The presentation is so popular that a lottery is held to determine which libraries Princess Brooke will visit during the summer reading season. “I get to meet all of our royal friends out in this area that I don’t always get to see at Dutch Wonderland,” Rand said. “This is
“It’s so wonderful because we get to read our book ‘Beyond the Castle Walls,’ which is about Dutch Wonderland and all of my royal friends,” Rand said, always remaining in character. “(By)

our last library visit. We’ve been all over the area reading to kids, and we’ve had such a wonderful time reading to them. “Thanks to all of my friends who came today,” she added. “I appreciate you so much.” Library director Trish Vandenbosch was glad to have the princess come to Christiana. “We haven’t had her (visit) for the last couple of years,” she said. The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program is “A Universe of Stories.” Previous special presentations this year have included a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) class on compasses and maps, a reptile show and more. Attendance has averaged 15 to 20 children per program. Many more patrons are taking part in the Summer Reading Program, which is open to youths through age 19. Children may read
at their own pace to complete reading logs. Free prizes are provided by local businesses for children who complete the requirements. “There are (non-reading events) on (the reading log) for reluctant readers. They can do activities, they can get a library card or they can come to programs - that all counts,” Vandenbosch said. Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. The Summer Reading Program will run through Saturday, Aug. 10. On that day, participants should bring their reading logs into the library to claim their prizes. The library will be open on Aug. 10 from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information about the Summer Reading Program or library activities, readers may visit www.christianalibrary.org or search for “Moores Memorial Library” on Facebook.

CVS Expands Medication Disposal Program CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health, has announced the expansion of its safe medication disposal program in Pennsylvania, adding disposal units in 80 CVS Pharmacy stores in communities across the state by the end of the year. This is in addition to the existing 26 units already installed, bringing the in state total to 106. Promptly disposing unused medications can help reduce the potential that they will be diverted or misused. Nationwide, the company has installed more than 1,300 instore safe medication disposal units. The company has also donated more than 970 units to community organizations such as police departments, including 135 units in Pennsylvania. Through this national effort, 408 metric tons, or around 900,000 pounds, of unwanted medication has been collected, including over 41,000 pounds in Pennsylvania alone. CVS Pharmacy plans to roll out additional safe medication disposal units across the country by the end of 2019 as part of a commitment announced at the end of last year to help provide
more disposal options in communities. The company is also partnering with Google Maps to make it easier for consumers to find year-round medication disposal options. CVS Health’s commitment to helping prevent and address prescription drug misuse extends to community education and increasing access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone. The company’s Pharmacists Teach program brings CVS pharmacists to schools across the country to talk to students and parents about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. More than 507,000 students across the country, including over 30,700 in Pennsylvania, have participated in the program. General information about CVS Pharmacy is available at www.cvshealth.com.

Civil War Roundtable Plans Meeting The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable will present “Weapons of Mass Destruction Considered During the Civil War” on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Mark Laubacher will present the program. In an effort to bring about resolution to the Civil War, creative suggestions and research were offered by individuals, many of whom were civilians. Suggestions involved the use of chemical and biological agents as unconventional weapons. Both sides considered weaponizing numerous chemicals and biological agents, including poison gas from a balloon, fuse-activated sulfur smoke cartridges, Chinese stink balls, and smallpox-contaminated clothing for Union forces. Laubacher is a registered nurse and paramedic working as a Certified Specialist in Poison Information since 1992 at the Central Ohio Poison Center located at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. In 2013, Laubacher presented a paper at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine Conference; his topic was snake bites received by Union and Confederate soldiers. A review of unconventional weapons that were considered during the Civil War was given in New Orleans in September 2014 to the North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, readers may email lancaster civilwarroundtable@gmail.com, visit www.lancastercivilwar roundtable.org, or call Micky at 717-940-7411.

All Invited To Knit And Natter By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Those who know how to knit or who want to learn are invited to knit with friends at the twicemonthly Knit and Natter meetings held at the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana. Library director Trish Vandenbosch formed the group nearly three years ago in response to requests. The name of the group refers to the fact that participants chat as they knit. “A couple of people said they wanted to learn how to knit. I got the knitters that I knew and asked them what time they wanted to meet,” she said. “They’ve been getting some new people. That’s always exciting.” There is no obligation to attend every meeting, and there is no preregistration required, so the group may vary in size from a few to a half-dozen or more.
Some people come only a few times to learn new things, while others make the meetings a part of their regular routines. Avid knitter Toady Kennel was already part of a knitting a group at Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church, where members make a variety of knitted items for charitable organizations. She continues these knitting projects at the library during Knit and Natter, working on hats, baby blankets and caps, hand warmers or whatever is needed. Kennel enjoys the company she finds at Knit and Natter and the helpfulness of fellow knitters. “If we get stuck on a pattern or make a mistake, we help each other out. It’s fun to knit together to see what everybody’s doing,” she said. “Some do both knitting and crocheting. We teach each other patterns and help change it up a little bit.”
Jennifer Barton often works on items for family and friends. She enjoys the friendly company of knitting with the group. “I get to talk with friends, and it gets me out,” she said. “One reason I come is I can sit here for two hours and concentrate on my knitting and not be interrupted.” “You get with a group of people that all have a common cause and you knit,” added Deb Stanley, who was knitting a dish cloth as a gift for a neighbor. “I knit for other people, for charity and for my health.” “I like getting together with the ladies here, knitting, crocheting or whatever I’m doing,” Bonnie Ford said while crocheting a baby blanket. Most of the group are veteran knitters who learned as children or teenagers. “I learned when I
was really young, when I was about 8. Then I didn’t knit for years,” Stanley said, noting that knitting does take some time to learn, but it is not as complex to start as it may seem. “I think if (beginners) do something easy to start with, they won’t get discouraged.” Knit and Natter meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, beginning at 1 p.m. Upcoming meetings will be held on Wednesdays, Aug. 7 and 21. Participants should bring their own yarn and needles. “We would like more people to join our group,” Vandenbosch said. Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. For more information, readers may visit www.christianalibrary.org or call 610-593-6683.

Lancaster Mural Wins Award
Groups Plan Benefit Sock Hop
Americans for the Arts has honored “This Neighborhood Is …” among 50 outstanding public arts projects created in 2018 through the Public Art Network Year in Review program, a national program that specifically recognizes compelling public art. Chosen by public art experts, the roster of selected projects was unveiled on June 14 at Americans for the Arts’ annual convention in Minneapolis. This is the 18th year that Americans for the Arts has recognized public art works. The mural, a public art project led by Lancaster residents Salina Almanzar and Osmyn Oree, was installed on the façade of the Water Street Mission along South Water Street, across from Culliton Park, in September 2018. Residents were invited to finish the sentence, “This neighborhood is” and sit for a portrait. Over three days in September, Almanzar and Oree, along with volunteers from the community, installed 20 portraits and 25 responses on the wall of the Water Street Mission. All participants

The mural was the final product of four months of community engagement regarding the renovation of Culliton Park. Two independent public art experts - artist Seitu Jones of St.
Paul, Minn., and Aaron Ott, curator of public art at Albirght Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y. - discussed the trends they uncovered while examining hundreds of submissions in selecting this year’s choices for the most exemplary, innovative permanent or temporary public art works created or debuted in 2018.
