PVHS Marchers Embark On Magical Mystery Tour

When Rob Corrao, Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) marching band director, took over for former director Jim Ackerman this spring, the music for the 2019 fall band show had already been chosen. “It’s a Beatles theme,” said Corrao. “(We call it) ‘The Magical
Mystery Marching Band Tour.’” Corrao worked with drum majors Emily Bologa and Emma Zanin and about 50 band members, including nearly a dozen color guard under the direction of Jennifer Bilby, at band camp, which was held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day from July 29 through Aug. 1, at the school in Kinzers. As of Aug. 1, band
members had completed two sections of the three-part program on the field. The drill will begin with “Magical Mystery Tour,” which will segue into “Lady Madonna.” “Day Tripper” will be a standalone middle piece, followed by a medley of “Let It Be” and bit of “Hey Jude.” According to Bologa, the drill is a bit of a departure from past years’ shows.
Both she and Corrao agreed that the drill as written by Ryan Kriebel is more structured. “Both Kriebel and our new assistant, (Vincent Shickora), work with competitive bands,” explained Corrao, who added that the change has brought new challenges to the band members. “They are bringing things they have done in competitive groups in (to our See PVHS Marchers pg 13

Inclement weather interfered with the 22nd annual COBYS Bike and Hike held in 2018. The bicycle and motorcycle rides were canceled, but the 3-mile walk soldiered on with 350 walkers braving the wet weather to help raise funds for the family services the organization provides. Earlier fundraisers had attracted between 400 and 500 attendees. Ten years ago, the first Woodcrest 3-D Archery Shoot was held. Last year’s competition attracted 180 shooters overall. More than 150 people attended the hot brunch that was served at the shoot. The 2019 shoot will be held at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Saturday, Aug. 24, from
7 a.m. until noon. A bonus shoot will be held from noon to 3 p.m. There is a fee to take part in the morning shoot, which includes brunch, a speaker, and opportunities to win door prizes. The price will be discounted for those under age 16. A separate price will be offered for those who take part in the bonus shoot. Organizers noted that any style of bow may be used on the course and that families are encouraged to take part in the event together. See Archery Shoot pg 15

Giant Food Stores has announced that Giant Direct, Powered by Peapod, is now available at 100 Giant stores and Martin’s Food Markets, under the Martin’s Direct banner, across four states. Giant Direct is Giant Food Stores’ online grocery service that offers pickup and delivery. Giant Food Stores president Nicholas Bertram and store manager Tim Dinsmore celebrated the opening of the 100th store to offer Giant Direct with a ribboncutting ceremony on July 12 at the Giant store located at 255 S. Spring Garden St., Carlisle. In celebration of this e-commerce achievement, Giant presented a $1,000 donation to Project SHARE, a Carlisle-based organization that provides groceries and other essentials to more than 1,000 local families in need each month. Giant introduced Giant Direct earlier this year to accelerate the company’s e-commerce strategy. In February, the company opened a 38,000-square-foot Giant Direct e-commerce hub in Lancaster that serves as a central shipping location for online delivery orders in the region. The hub also permits customers to place orders on-site via electronic tablets allowing for pedestrian pickup as well as the traditional car curbside pickup. The e-commerce effort has continued over the past five months, as Giant has added

Moms In Prayer Will Kick Off Year Moms in Prayer International will soon kick off another season of praying for children and schools. In Lancaster County, many groups will meet weekly. Moms in Prayer is a worldwide group of praying mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and other women. In addition to a traditional/one-school Moms in Prayer group, there are also church-based, homeschool, preschool, special-needs,
prodigal, military, college, career, language-based, grandmothers’ and working mothers’ groups, as well as a growing prison ministry. Founded in 1984, Moms in Prayer International has one goal: to impact children and schools for Christ by gathering mothers to pray. Mothers in more than 140 countries around the world meet regularly, spending an hour praying
through the four steps of prayer: praising God for who He is, silently confessing any sins, thanking God for what He has done, and interceding on behalf of children, teachers, and school staff members. Additionally, Moms in Prayer will hold Bless Our School Sunday on Sept. 15. On this date, churches around the world will pray for the students, teachers, and school staff members in

Community Invited To Faith Church Picnic

When Becky Naughton and Kim Sinopoli sat down with other members of the Faith Evangelical Congregational Church’s fellowship team to brainstorm events, Sinopoli had an idea. “We were trying to think of different ways to bring (church members) together, but also to include people from the community because we have a lot of room for growth,” said Sinopoli. “Food and fellowship go together. I know communities as a whole will always enjoy some food and entertainment.” Out of Sinopoli’s thoughts has grown the church’s first community picnic. The event, which will feature games and entertainment, is planned for Saturday, Aug. 24, from 4 to 8 p.m. on the church grounds at 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Guests are welcome to arrive at 4 p.m., and food will be served at 5 p.m. There is no need to preregister. The event will be held rain or shine. “We are promoting (the picnic) to local neighborhood (residents),” explained Kristen Hershey, a member of the church outreach committee. “(Area residents) can just show up,” she added. “Bring a lawn chair.” The picnic will include free food, games, and an illusionist. According to Naughton, the menu will include smoked pulled pork sandwiches, beef barbecue sandwiches, and hot dogs. In addition, church members will provide sides and desserts. “We will have plenty of food,” said Naughton, who added that a popcorn machine will be on-site and water ice will be given away. Sinopoli noted that organizers have lined up entertainer Papa Tater to perform throughout the event. “He will do two shows and spend extra time doing balloon animals for children,” said Sinopoli. Papa Tater, who specializes in comedy and magic, has been performing in the Lancaster area for more than a decade. His shows are known for being interactive with the goal of both amazing and amusing his audience. Hershey noted that a variety of yard games will also be available to play, including cornhole and giant

The wedding of Courtney Stangl and Benjamin Cook took place on June 22 at The Trust Performing Arts Center in Lancaster. Michael Stangl officiated at the 3 p.m. ceremony. She graduated from Pequea Valley High School in 2014 and Lancaster Bible College in 2019. The groom is the son of Darryl and Debbie Cook of Harrisburg. He graduated from Central Dauphin High School in 2014 and Penn State Harrisburg in 2018. He is employed in software development by the Pennsylvania State Police in Harrisburg. The maid of honor was Hannah Robinson of Kinzers. Serving as best men were Micah Byler and Ben Byler of Harrisburg. The bride was given in marriage by her parents. The bride wore an off-the-shoulder blush pink underlay Mon Cheri gown with cascading flower petals from top to bottom. She carried ivory and blush quicksand roses with eucalyptus and baby’s breath. The reception was held at The Trust Performing Arts Center. After a wedding trip to Cancun, Mexico, the couple resides in Harrisburg.

The GOAL Project in Lancaster will offer the first of a three-part series on creating a sustainable addiction prevention and recovery ministry on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 11 N. Richland Ave., York. The GOAL Project wants to help local faith communities build sustainable teams that prevent substance abuse and support to those in recovery through its Face Addiction With Intervention and Training for Healing (F.A.I.T.H.) Initiatives program. The workshop series is delivered by Faith Partners, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization
that has trained hundreds of congregational teams from 22 different faith traditions in 29 states. Its evidence-based model is based on a three-phase process. The process includes Building Readiness, Equipping Leadership and Developing the Team, and Sustaining Local Ministries. Building Readiness is a six-hour leadership workshop where clergy, ministry leaders, and key stakeholders from various faith backgrounds gather to explore their organizations’ beliefs, ideas, and attitudes toward addiction and substance use. This workshop focuses
on the role of the faith community in awareness, education, and recovery support, as well as tips for initiating a team ministry. Equipping Leadership and Developing the Team is a two-day workshop to build capacity for ministry teams that include training, recovery support activities, tools, strategies and educational handouts. This is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Nov. 9. Sustaining Local Ministries will discuss how to sustain ministry teams to avoid burn-out and provide a life-sustaining healing ministry. Teams continue to meet for
further training and to share resources and connect to community services. GOAL provides continuing education and networking opportunities. GOAL provides local training and support as needed. The F.A.I.T.H. Initiatives program is ideal for churches and synagogues, but is not limited to any specific belief group or tradition. People of all faiths are welcome to participate. Word’s mission is to ignite passion for the Word of God. Through the Awana ministry, CMBC desires that children will know, love and serve Christ. Awana is an acronym for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed, and it is based on 2 Timothy 2:15. Awana consists of Cubbies, for children ages 3 to 5; Sparks, for children in kindergarten through second grade; and T&T, for children in grades three to six. The first meeting of the 201920 club year will occur on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Awana will be held on most Wednesdays from 6:40 to 8:15 p.m. through Wednesday, May 6, 2020. Each Awana meeting includes several segments. The evening opens when all club members meet in the auditorium to pray, sing, say the club’s pledges, and hear announcements. Each age group then meets for its own separate Bible teaching time, which also includes introduction and explanation of the Scripture contained in the handbooks. Participants then meet in small groups, typically of five to eight club members and two leaders, to study and discuss the night’s Scripture and Bible story. During this time, the children recite their memorized verses for their leaders, and Cubbies also do a craft. After small group time, club members play group games on Awana’s game circle. Some meetings include additional activities related to the night’s theme. Nightly themes this year will

Celtic Martins from pg 1 The talented Celtic Martins will perform at the final free concert of the Sounds of Strasburg summer series at Strasburg Community Park on Saturday, Aug. 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The family band is known for bringing energy to the Celtic music and dance scene. The program on Aug. 17 will feature Irish and American fiddle tunes along with numerous Irish step dance routines. “We have wanted to have the Celtic Martins on our outdoor stage for several years,” said Mark Arbogast, president of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, which hosts the concert series. “This is an extremely multitalented family that will amaze our visitors. It will be a great show to end this year’s concert series. We hope many families will join us for this event. Our outdoor amphitheater is a great venue for this type of performance.” The main parking lot is located at 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg, and is reserved for handicappedaccessible parking. A golf cart shuttle will be available for disabled guests. Ample parking may be found along Precision Avenue. communications and development manager, have planned to open this year’s Bike and Hike up to more area residents when it is held at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Sunday, Sept. 8. The 65-mile motorcycle ride registration will begin at 12:45 p.m., and the ride will take off at 1:30 p.m. Registration for the walk and bicycle ride will begin at 1:30 p.m., and the 25-mile bike ride will begin at 2 p.m. The walk and 10-mile bike ride will begin at 2:30 p.m. At 2 p.m., the COBYS family celebration will begin. “We are adding more family-friendly celebration pieces throughout the afternoon,” explained Stokes. “We are looking to make sure that folks who might not know about COBYS will feel free to stop by and … learn about us.” The celebration will include a silent auction featuring gift certificates, theme baskets, tickets for local sports competitions, and items made and sold locally, such as handmade toys. “It’s a full range (of items),” said Stokes, who noted that local businesses are welcome to donate gift cards or items or stop by during the event to meet COBYS representatives. Donations will be welcomed up to the day of the event. Past events have been known for celebrating with ice cream, but Stokes noted this year, popcorn will be available too. Silent auction winners and door prize winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m., along with a short presentation by COBYS. Stokes said that the event brings together people from all parts of the community. “It’s individuals from churches and youth groups gathering together with local businesses and area residents to not only do something fun, but to raise critical funds for COBYS and celebrate all the work that we do throughout Lancaster County and the surrounding communities,” she said. Funds raised through sponsorships and individual participants will aid COBYS’ general budget, which provides family services in several specific areas. “COBYS (offers) foster care, adoption, counseling, and family life education services, which includes workshops, parenting courses, and kinship navigator services,” explained Stokes. Stokes and May would be thrilled if this year’s Bike and Hike attracted up to 600 participants and raised more than $100,000. “For people who haven’t participated in the past, this is an easy way to get to know a little more about us and give it a try,” said Stokes. His presentation’s purpose was to empower the audience to achieve maximum impact through motivation, inspiration, and education. The highlight of the conference was the presentation of the annual Lancaster County DUI Top Gun Awards. Thirteen municipal law enforcement officers were honored for making the most arrests for impaired driving in 2018 within their respective departments. Combined, the 2018 honorees removed 277 impaired drivers from Lancaster County roadways. The DUI Top Gun Awards’ master of ceremonies was retired York County Judge John Kennedy, who is now a judicial outreach liaison for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The honorees are Patrol Officer Samuel A. Sanger, East Lampeter Township Police Department, 43 arrests; Patrolman Roger Kreisher Jr., East Cocalico Township Police from 11 a.m. to noon to conclude the morning shoot. As in years past, the shoot will feature door prizes consisting of hunting- and outdoor-related items. Vendors that specialize in outdoor sporting equipment, including a vendor that makes hunting films, will also have displays on-site. The shoot raises funds to help defray the general operating costs of Woodcrest Retreat and to subsidize fees for campers who need assistance to afford camp. “We need to raise $85,000 each year to cover our camp budget,� explained Woodcrest director Cliff Martin, who added that proceeds

Gunzenhauser Announces Retirement Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, and 5 with the State Philharmonic of Rheinland-Pfalz was nominated for a Grammy in 2003. In 2008, Gunzenhauser was conductor of a new virtuoso chamber orchestra called Pro Musicis, which recorded Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” with Harrisburg Symphony concertmaster Odin Rathnam. In past seasons, the maestro conducted at the Teatro Colón with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra of Colombia, South America. Other activities included a fullscale production of Puccini’s “Tosca” at the Wittgenstein Theater near Dresden, Germany. Stephen Gunzenhauser will retire from the position of conductor and music director of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) in June 2020. His final season with the orchestra will mark the 73rd anniversary of the symphony and the 40th anniversary of Gunzenhauser’s leadership.
Orchestra as well as with the Danubius Orchestra at the Franz Liszt Academy of Budapest in the première of the Mazetti completion of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony. The program was broadcast throughout Europe. Gunzenhauser has also conducted the National Orchestra of Argentina, the Belgrade Philharmonic in Serbia, and the Arpeggione Chamber Orchestra of Austria, as well as the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, with which he conducted the Mayor’s Concert on the day after Christmas for five years. He was the American judge at an International Conducting Competition in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2001, and he has been an international judge and conductor at competitions in Sicily and Kazakhstan.

The art show will host Mountain Road Band from Harrisburg on Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. in the Mount Gretna Playhouse. Admission to the concert will be included with Aug. 18 show admission. Children’s events will include a percussion craft led by Gretna Music and drum circles on the Mount Gretna Playground led by Joyful ViBraysions from York. The Kids’ Art Show, created for families, is scheduled for both days under the direction of Christa Eck.
