Corrao had scheduled a practice for every other week prior to band camp, adding an extra practice the week before, to help familiarize students with the music and the drill. The 2021 show will include wellknown tunes, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” made famous by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell; “After the Love Has Gone,” by Earth, Wind & Fire; and “Sir Duke”
by Stevie Wonder. Heverin will conduct the first song, and Ammon will conduct the final song. Ammon will play a flute solo on “After the Love Has Gone.” Trumpeter Alex Kauffman will have a solo on the same song, and color guard Tori Sensenig will be in the spotlight as well. The featured twirler for this year’s show is Kyleigh Jarvis. The drill, which was written by Ryan Kriebel, will change with the

In Support Of Fundraiser The Liberty War Bird Association (LWBA) flew Huey 823, a fully restored Vietnam UH-1H helicopter, in support of the annual Corporal Brandon M. Hardy Memorial Fund motorcycle ride on July 17. Hardy and two of his fellow Marines died on April 28, 2006, in Iraq while serving as crew members on an AMTRAC. His parents, Warren and Jill Hardy, initiated the memorial fund in their son’s name shortly after his death. A total of 240 motorcycles departed Gap at 9 a.m. and returned to the same area at approximately noon. Huey 823 departed Lancaster Airport, flew directly to the site of Brandon’s grave at Calgary Monument Church in Paradise and slowly circled the cemetery three times.
Huey 823 then flew the same route as the motorcycles to the landing zone where the ride would end, and the helicopter arrived just before the motorcycles. The motorcycle ride was a fundraiser for the Corporal

home while they are on leave. Anyone interested in supporting the fund may contact Jill at 610-416-3057. LWBA is nonprofit organization of veterans with the mission of educating the public on the crucial role played by the UH-1 series of helicopters in the Vietnam War. Huey 823 has flown numerous missions in support of veterans’ and patriotic events, including a visit to the Coatesville VA Medical Center. There are only about 10 fully restored Hueys in the US. Huey 823 looks now as it did when it flew combat missions for the 170th Helicopter Assault Company in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. It bears the repaired bullet holes as proof of service. Anyone interested in supporting the LWBA may contact Chuck Bechtel, the public affairs officer, at 717-756-0643 or chuckbechtel@verizon.net.
When Landis Communities held the blessing of the ground at 239 W. King St., Lancaster, on July 7, representatives of local government, churches, Landis Communities, and Landis Quality Living were present to celebrate a well-defined mission that included both need and vision. “The idea (of Landis Place) is (to cultivate) abundant choices for seniors,” said Beth Trout, vice president of advancement and communications with Landis Communities. “ We know from Steeple View Lofts that we have a strong interest in people wanting to live in an urban walkable downtown,” said Ed Kaminski, who is the director of Landis Quality Living. Landis Place on King will be a seven-story mixed-use building, which is scheduled to be completed in August of 2022 and is designed with space for 79 apartments, 41 parking spots, a multi-ethnic restaurant, a nonprofit organization, and a physician’s office. The 55-and-up community will offer 49 two-bedroom apartments and 30 one-bedroom plans, along with a terrace, fitness room, and community space. A community manager, a maintenance technician, and a care navigator, who will help residents with insurance, connecting to services, and preand post-procedure requirements, will be on-site.
On July 7, Landis Communities blessed the land at 239 W. King St., Lancaster, (top photo), where the organization plans to build Landis Place on King, a 55-and-up community (bottom photo).

Color guard director Jennifer Bilby said that guard members use 6-foot-flags and swing flags in the show. A number of the band members are new this year, so learning to march and play music at the same time was a challenge. Halfway through the week, freshman Hayden Winey was pleased with his progress. “After yesterday, I realized it was easier than I expected,” he said. “Before that I had only marched without playing or played without

world and attracted attendees from up and down the East Coast of the United States. Kobi Martin, pastor of children’s ministries at Hopewell Church in Elverson, participated, and he appreciated the opportunity to gain perspective. “For me, the most valuable thing … is a space to step out of all the little details of ministry to take a look at the big picture,” he said. “CONNECT provides the time and space to talk about what we are really trying to accomplish and hear the successes, failures, and struggles of other children’s ministries.” Mary Edwards, director of KidMin at Gateway Church,
Parkesburg, noted that the timing of the presentation about “Online Children’s Ministry” at a November 2019 gathering well before COVID19 restrictions were in place, was especially helpful to her. “Dr. Sarah Holmes Zoomed into our time together, (and) she taught us methods to engage children virtually through various teaching styles,” recalled Edwards. Once the pandemic hit, CONNECT became an invaluable resource. “(CONNECT) was super helpful during the pandemic when suddenly all the rules changed, and we all needed to figure out how to redefine success, how to use
new resources, and not lose our minds at the same time,” said Martin. He pointed out that CONNECT organizers calling in speakers from across the globe during virtual meetings was “super cool and encouraging.” Edwards said that her involvement in CONNECT has given her tools to strengthen her ministry and that she often returns from meetings with information she can use to train her KidMin leaders at the church. During the pandemic, she was inspired to offer a Remote Learning Center in the church, where students had a safe space that provided Wi-Fi
and allowed students to complete school assignments while parents worked. Esther Zimmerman, interim chair of Church and Ministry Leadership at LBC, who currently heads up the program, said that the group will begin meeting in the Olewine Dining Commons at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on select Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Planned meeting dates include Sept. 16, Oct. 21, and Nov. 18. In 2022, meetings are planned for Jan. 27, Feb. 24, and April 28. A special evening event will be held on March 24. More information about LBC may be found by visiting www.lbc.edu.

Legion Plans Patriots Ride/Day The Ephrata American Legion Post 429, located on Cocalico Street, will hold its second annual Patriots Ride/Day to benefit several charitable organizations on Saturday, Aug. 21. The recipients of the proceeds will be IM ABLE, Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors and the Cloister Ephrata American Legion Post 429. The event will begin with a motorcycle ride organized by the Ephrata American Legion Riders. Registration will start at 11 a.m., with kickstands up at noon. There will be a perperson charge for the event, which includes a scenic ride through the countryside, a stop at Blue Mountain Lakes, a food buffet at 4 p.m. at the Ephrata American Legion and live music by Off Our Rockers Band from 6 to 10 p.m. All motorcyclists are welcome. For more details, call Legion Riders president Scott Williams at 717-572-5979. While the motorcycle ride is taking place, a family fun day will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the American Legion. It will be hosted by the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion and Auxiliary. The event will include a food truck and an ice cream truck on-site from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a dunk tank featuring special guests, a bounce castle, barrel train rides and carnival-type games. Members of the Liberty War Bird Association and the Red Horse Unit from Fort Indiantown Gap will be present, along with local first responders. There is no admission fee, but some games and food may have nominal fees. At 4 p.m. in the ballroom, the food buffet will become available, both to those who took part in the motorcycle ride and those who did not. All attendees may stay for the live music. There is a fee for those who did not go on the motorcycle ride, and tickets may be purchased in advance by calling the American Legion at 717-733-2576, or they may be purchased at the door. Sponsorships are available.
