Marching “Off The Wall” By Ann Mead Ash

In 2019, when Rob Corrao took over as Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) marching band director, the music for the fall band show had already been chosen. This year, Corrao was in the driver’s seat from the start, and he chose a theme that focuses on Michael Jackson’s pre-“Thriller” efforts.

The 2020 PVHS fall marching show, titled “Off the Wall,” will feature four Michael Jackson songs. The nearly 10-minute show will open with “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough,” followed by the title song, “Off the Wall.” The third song will be “Human Nature,” which is Corrao’s favorite Michael Jackson song. The show will wrap up with “I Want You Back,” which features

Michael with the Jackson 5. During band camp, which was held at the school in Kinzers from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day from Aug. 3 to 7, Corrao worked with drum majors Haley Peterson and Grace Runner and about 45 band members, including five color guard under the direction of Jennifer

Bilby. The band also includes a featured twirler and a majorette. As of Aug. 6, band members had completed about a third of the program on the field. “The storm on Tuesday really set us back,” said Corrao, who noted the heavy rain forced the band to spend the day inside working on music. The drill, which was written by Ryan Kriebel, is a structured piece that requires some complicated choreography, but Corrao said that the main challenge of camp has been meeting COVID-19 criteria. Students’ temperatures are checked when they arrive, and each student answers questions online using a QR code. Students also wear masks inside as well as outside if they are closer than six feet apart. “We have sent (the students) straight to the field so they aren’t in the building,” said Corrao, who noted that the band members have followed the protocol. “They are so See Marching Band pg 6

The Bird-in-Hand Stage, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, has several years of presenting live entertainment, including local performers interspersed with original Blue Gate Musicals shows focused on the Plain community. Starting in 2016, Brett and Labrina Myers provided shows for Birdin-Hand before preparing to open their own Magic and Wonder Theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise. Bird-in-Hand’s 2020 season was slated to start on April 2. Magic and Wonder’s first show ever in the venue, “Worlds of Wonder,” was planned to launch on April 8. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, however, neither theater opened in See Area Theaters pg 2

Gifts That Give Hope Fair Moves Online A Tortoise’s Tale A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a

meaningful gift, especially for those who do not need anything in particular. Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities,” she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we See Gifts That Give Hope pg 7

Once upon a time, there was a Russian tortoise named Shelly. Shelly lived in a terrarium in the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL), 31 Center St., Intercourse. Catherine O’Sullivan, director of PVPL, took good care of Shelly, making sure she received food, fresh water, time under her heat lamp, and regular daily exercise outside the terrarium. Even though she knew Shelly was healthy, O’Sullivan worried that Shelly would get bored in her terrarium. She dreamed of a home with better ventilation, varied terrain, and more room for Shelly to move around. She also wanted a home that was at eye level for the many children who came to see Shelly. O’Sullivan shared her thoughts with Cecil Sudbrack. Cecil’s wife, Sharon, was the youth services coordinator for PVPL for many years before she retired. “I had been looking around, but you can’t See Tortoise pg 4

Bird-in-Hand opened with local favorite Ryan and Friends presenting a show called “Comedy and Calamity.” “It’s a very family-friendly show with ventriloquism and comedy,” said Buda Moser, who noted that Ryan and his five puppet friends made their debut on the Bird-inHand stage with this presentation. “We were looking for a family option with comedy that would appeal to a variety of audiences,” added Buda Moser. Ryan and friends opened Aug. 8, with shows running through Saturday, Oct. 17. “The GÜT Life,” starring Nathan Garner as Simon Yoder and Monica DePaul as his wife, Eliza, will run from Thursday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Oct. 23. Buda Moser explained that the show focuses on an Amish couple in their mid-40s looking back over 20 years of marriage. The 90-minute show tells stories from their lives growing up on farms and then veering off when Eliza left the Plain community for a time before returning. “There are some interesting stories there,” said Buda Moser, who called the interactive show

April, but Magic and Wonder opened on July 20, and Bird-inHand is holding two shows starting in August. To open in accordance with green phase regulations, theaters may be at 50% capacity. “We can seat about 175 people (under green), but we will probably do less than that,” said Terry Buda Moser, director of marketing with Bird-in-Hand. “We will keep (attendees with their own households) and seat them six feet apart,” she added, noting that hand sanitizer will be available and masks will be required when patrons are not seated. Cleaning protocols will be followed between shows with high-touch areas sanitized. At Magic and Wonder, tables are placed six feet apart and masks must be worn while in common areas. Sanitizing occurs before, during, and after each show, and all employees undergo a temperature check and answer five Centers for Disease Control and Prevention questions before being allowed to work. Although the building will hold 500 people, the venue is currently only accommodating 125 guests.

purchase a habitat like (what I wanted),” recalled O’Sullivan. “I knew I had to ask somebody.” In May, Cecil offered to try building a habitat. O’Sullivan sent Cecil a picture of a design she had found. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, most of the planning discussions between Cecil and O’Sullivan were handled by email. Cecil had questions about size, how much acrylic glass would be needed, and whether to make eye-level viewing available from four sides or only two. Cecil went to work in his basement, and in July, he delivered the new habitat to the library. “This is beyond expectations of what I had hoped to have,” said O’Sullivan as she watched Shelly venturing around her new terrain, which includes hills, valleys, rocks, mushroom mulch, living plants that are edible and nontoxic, drinking water, and a moisturizing pool that O’Sullivan calls Shelly’s hot tub. “We have Christmas cactus,

oregano, and blackberries (for her),” shared O’Sullivan. The finished habitat utilizes hydraulics to make the top easy to lift and leaves space under the lid for ventilation. It also sports wheels to facilitate transportation around the library. O’Sullivan is thankful to Cecil for his efforts. “That a patron would take time to do this (is wonderful),” she said. “The finishes are beautiful.” She added that Cecil said he enjoyed the project. “Sharon said he had fun doing it. I am just incredibly grateful,” she noted. Shelly is a very active tortoise, according to O’Sullivan, who confessed to sometimes struggling to find the reptile when she was traversing the library. “She burrows a lot,” said O’Sullivan, who noted that Shelly tends to pull her plants out by the roots as she moves around. “You can tell by the way she is moving that she is so much happier (in her new habitat).” Because Shelly is gregarious and friendly, O’Sullivan

wanted a habitat that would allow patrons to see Shelly and Shelly to see them. “She is so active and personable. She enjoys people,” reported O’Sullivan. “I have wanted a living habitat so that kids could really see her moving around and learn,” she said. “We put the bench here so they could sit and watch (her).” The care and feeding of a tortoise involves more than throwing a few green leafy vegetables into the habitat. “She is out for her bath every week (to keep her from drying out),” said O’Sullivan. “We bathe her in a big plastic tub with water up to her neck, and she moves around and gets herself wet.” When Shelly is not on the move, O’Sullivan said she enjoys her heat lamp, which is on a timer, so she gets 12 hours of heat at a time. The temperature in the habitat is monitored constantly. During the month of August, the library will be open from Mondays through Thursdays

Small Business Grants Are Available The COVID-19 Relief Statewide Small Business Assistance Program opened its second application window on Aug. 10. The application window will remain open for 15 business days, closing at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28. This is the final opportunity to apply for the program. Pennsylvania small businesses are encouraged to apply for relief if they had 25 or fewer full-time employees prior to Feb. 15, have annual revenues of $1 million or less, and were economically

impacted by COVID-19. All applications must be made through a Community Development Financial Institution in the county where their business is located. Business owners who already applied during the first application window were scheduled to be notified of their status by Aug. 10. They do not need to reapply in the second round. Qualified applications will automatically roll over into the next funding round for consideration.

from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 to 7 p.m. On Fridays, the library will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Masks are strongly encouraged during visits, and patrons are asked to observe social distancing guidelines. Visits should be limited to 30 minutes or less. The Salisbury Township Branch Library, located at 835 Houston Run Drive, Suite 220, Gap, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More information about PVPL may be found at www.pvpl.org.

“At the very beginning, we get in two lines side by side and then separate outward, and we all turn on the same beat,” she said. Corrao mentioned that the opening of the show includes the two twirlers in a mirror image routine while the color guard are posing behind them. According to Runner, the band members started camp each day with jumping jacks, stretches, and a lap around the track, followed by a fun activity such as charades. Students worked on marching and putting the drill to the music until lunch. After lunch, sectionals and music were the focus until the group returned to the field. To add an element of fun to the experience, the drum majors held a battle of the sections, which awarded points for dressing up on specific spirit days. Peterson reported that Monday was USA Day, and Tuesday was Beach Day. On Wednesday, Twin Day was held, and Thursday was 1980s Neon Michael Jackson Day. Friday was Section Shirt Day. Each section was awarded points, with free Rita’s ice cream for members of the winning section.

excited to be back,” said Corrao. “If we told them they had to wear a snowsuit, they would probably do it because they want to get back together with their friends and play some music.” Runner remarked that learning the drill has required the band members to sharpen their mind and body coordination. “(It’s a challenge to learn) all the things we have to think about while we’re marching,” she said, listing foot placement, body placement, and head movements while playing music among the skills students have been working to build. “Some of the figures and the music are challenging rhythmically,” said Corrao, who cited “Human Nature” as being the trickiest to master. “I think it might be tougher because some of the (actions) are not happening on the beat, (but) feet are moving on the beat,” he said. “Human Nature,” which will feature a solo by trombonist Nathan Heverin, was a jazz arrangement that was rearranged for marching band by Corrao’s assistant, Vincent Shickora. Runner stated that highlights of the show include a follow-theleader type train in “Don’t Stop.”

Gifts That Give Hope from pg 1 can refocus on what’s important.” COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions also encouraged the changes in how the fair will be held this year. “We decided to keep it virtual,” said Knepper, who added that the organization will be spotlighting 30 nonprofit organizations that have taken part in the fair previously. “The sponsors that would normally have been our supporters are going through a tough time, so we are trying to have minimal overhead costs,” she explained. She added that, as in the past, there will be variety in the organizations that are featured and that both local and global nonprofits will be included. Local organizations that will be featured in the 2020 GTGH are Milagro House, SWAN, Music for Everyone, Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, The Common Wheel, and Power Packs Project. Other area nonprofits that will be highlighted are Lifecycles, The Edible Classroom, Mom’s House, Aarons Acres, Faith Friendship Community of Mountville, the Lancaster Junior League, Nurse Family Partnership, North Star Initiative, Clare House Lancaster, Church World Service Lancaster, and Advoz. Organizations with furtherreaching missions are Feed My Starving Children, World Bicycle Relief, Connection Ubuntu, Habitat for Humanity, Rafiki Africa Foundation, Brittany’s Hope, HOPE International, Heifer Project,Vickie’s Angel Foundation, Outreach Paraguay, Siloam Ethiopia, and Meals on Wheels.

Stoltzfus Honored By Woodworking Network

R062275

SHOE SALE

Keystone Wood Specialties recently announced that Nick Stoltzfus, vice president of operations, has been named as one of the Wood Industry 40 Under 40 award winners for 2020. The annual award, given by Woodworking Network, celebrates the next generation of industry professionals who are making an impact on wood products manufacturing in North America. Those selected are considered by their peers to be innovators, achievers and even disruptors who demonstrate excellence in the categories of productivity, profitability, social good, ingenuity, peer inspiration, product development, organizational leadership or another area. More than 140 submissions were received and evaluated by a team of six Woodworking Network editors. Harry Urban, Woodworking Network publisher, noted that this year’s honorees were able to keep their companies moving forward during the COVID-19 pandemic, while dedicating themselves to their communities and public causes. “As the vice president of operations for Keystone Wood Specialties, Nick Stoltzfus is helping to forge the future for his family’s nearly 50-year-old business,” said Stoltzfus’ nominator in the nomination letter. Founded in 1972 by Sam Stoltzfus, company president and CEO and Nick’s father, Keystone Wood Specialties manufacturers custom wood components, backed by personalized customer service. The nominator described Nick as “an intelligent, calm and steadfast leader.” The 32-year-old Nick has worked closely with his father to preserve the Lancasterbased company’s “time-honored craftsmanship and work ethic, while incorporating new technologies and product lines that will lay the groundwork for success in the years ahead,” said his nominator. “Nick’s thorough understanding of all aspects of the business is invaluable to the woodworking industry, most recently evident during the recent COVID-19 crisis,” the nominator added. “His leadership during this challenging time saved jobs and ensured the company remained viable so that the many contractors, remodelers and cabinetmakers that rely on Keystone Wood Specialties’ products could remain viable as well.” His nominator continued, “Nick’s deep appreciation for the hard work that his family and the many long-term employees have put forth in building and growing Keystone Wood Specialties motivates him to ensure that this legacy continues.”
