County Families Welcome Fresh Air Children Across America

In 38 Weeks

By Ann Mead Ash

More than 40 people waited at Groffdale Mennonite Church in Leola for a bus to arrive from New York City on July 1. The group consisted of host family members who were eager to meet the 26 Fresh Air children who were scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m. The Sellers family of Denver, Caitlin and Keith and their three children ages 8, 5, and 3, were looking forward to sharing their home in the woods with their assigned child. “We thought it would be a good opportunity to open our world to a child with limited experience,” said Keith, who noted that camping in the backyard was on the family’s agenda. “We have plenty of outdoor activities planned,” added Keith. A picnic and at least one fishing trip were scheduled, along with the camping. The three children said they love fishing. Waiting just a short distance away, Tanya Beakes, also of Denver, and her two daughters were anxious to welcome their first Fresh Air child. Hannah Beakes, who is 11, had been communicating with Yvonne Zhuang for some time. “I am looking forward See Fresh Air Fund pg 7

Pupventures Lets The Dogs Out By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Want to make a difference in the life of a dog but cannot commit to full-time ownership? Then you might be a candidate for Pupventures, a program of the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. Center volunteers have been taking dogs staying at the shelter, 848 S. Prince St., Lancaster, on adventures in the community. “We have volunteers take the dogs

out almost every day,” said site manager Rachel Golub. “We have a list of approved locations for volunteers to take the dogs to as well as general rules for taking the dogs out, such as no greeting other dogs, no going to dog parks, and no one under 18 is allowed to handle the dog. Most people take the dogs to one of the nature preserves, hiking trails, or parks on our approved location list, but they can opt to go to places like Lowe’s or Splits & Giggles as See Pupventures pg 4

John Halvorsen, a pastor from Duluth, Minn., recent completed Prayer Walk America, which took him from Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, Calif., to Manhattan, N.Y., in 38 weeks. “We started Oct. 31, 2018,” said John, who averaged 16 miles a day. He arrived in Times Square on July 31. Along the way, he and his wife, Sandy, who followed along on John’s walk in a motorhome, stopped in Lancaster for dinner at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township. monitors, car seats, cribs, video cassette tapes, mattresses, and air conditioners. Freedom Thrift is seeking area residents with extra time they could use to give back to the community. “We really need volunteers, and we can use all their gifts,” noted Buckwalter, who said the store will need sorters, pricers, and greeters, as well as cashiers. “We will (work to) find a place for you (to volunteer),” added Fox. Fox said that the organizers of Freedom Thrift, which began accepting donations in July, are thankful to the Ephrata, New Holland, and Morgantown ReUzit Stores. “I appreciate their assistance in getting started,” he noted. “ We all are doing the Lord’s work,” added Fox, who worked at the Ephrata Re-Uzit before coming to work at Freedom. He has been associated with area thrift stores for nearly a decade. “I would love to see people come to the area and visit all the local (thrift stores),” he said. ROFM is a faith-based, Christcentered discipleship program for men who struggle with addic-

The upstairs area, which is in the process of being remodeled for the ministry, will be able to accommodate as many as 50 men. After successfully passing a short quiz, the volunteers are scheduled for individual training with a staff member. Pupventures was created to help to reduce kennel stress and to provide dogs with enrichment and increased visibility in hopes that they will be adopted, said Pennsylvania SPCA public relations director Gillian Kocher. “These outings give the shelter valuable insight on how the dogs behave outside a shelter environment. It’s also a great excuse to spend a day doing something new or exploring what Lancaster and the surrounding area have to offer,” Kocher explained. “Similar programs at shelters across the country have been enormously successful, and the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center is excited to introduce this to the area. will integrate science, technology, engineering, and math standards with engineering and coding activities to solve problems, do experiments, or share what they learned. Students in Pequea Valley’s STEM class code robots to interact with their environment as tools they use to learn. Learning experiences using the new kits may range from designing prototypes of an invention for their classroom to creating a tool for a lab experiment on balance designs.

By designing with Lego kits and components, students can exercise their creativity and inventiveness, learn how things move, and discover how sensors are used in everyday tools at home and at work. Swords said he hopes to begin implementing the curriculum in the fall and plans to display learner-created designs and projects at the second annual STEM Arts and Design Night in May. Projects will show student projects, creative designs, and unique robots that solve problems at school and in the home.

Fresh Air Fund from pg 1 to meeting her in person and getting to know her better,” said Hannah. Tanya noted that the girls already know they have a lot in common, adding that one of their first conversations involved the details of making slime. “We both don’t like roller coasters,” noted Hannah. Tanya said that the family planned to swim, visit a local amusement park, and attend a show at a local Christian theater. “We’ll be showing her all the stuff there is to do around Lancaster County,” said Tanya. The Beakes family became interested in hosting a Fresh Air child after talking to fellow church members who recommended the experience. They met with one of the coordinators and decided to sign up. “ We thought it sounded like fun,” shared Tanya. The Fresh Air Fund is a notfor-profit agency that connects thousands of children from lowincome families in New York City with host families in rural, suburban, and small-town commu-

nities along the East Coast and southern Canada. Youths ages 7 to 18 stay free of charge for one or two weeks of fun and relaxation with a host family. Bus drop-offs occur several times throughout the summer in various locations. For 2019, nearly 100 children left New York City to stay with families in Lancaster County. On July 1, 26 children met their host families at the Junction Center in Manheim in addition to the Leola pickup location. Area readers who would like to host a child next summer may contact Lancaster County Fresh Air Fund representative Marcia Weaver at 717-951-8851 or fill out a form at www.freshair.org to get started. Pennsylvania clearances and other background checks may be completed through the agency. Volunteer host families may request the preferred age and gender of their Fresh Air child. Children on first-time visits are ages 7 to 12, and children reinvited by the same family may continue through age 18. According to www.fresh air.org, more than 1.8 million children from New York City have participated in the cultural exchange program since it began in 1877.

where he earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and physical training. Instead of pursuing a career in that field, he went into the Pennsylvania State Police. He served as a Pennsylvania state trooper based in the Avondale and Lancaster barracks starting in the 1980s. He retired in 2012 after 29 years on the force and began looking for a new career. He continues to serve as the chaplain for Troop J of Lancaster. The call to the ministry came to Brown right after his mother passed away in his arms in 1999. “The day after my mother passed away, I looked out her window and the Lord told me, ‘I want you to go out and tell people about My goodness,’” Brown recalled. “A moment when I was at one of the lowest points in my life was one of the greatest points in my life as well, because that was the beginning of me starting the ministry of (using) my pain to help others in their pain and in their joys as well.” Brown studied at Lancaster Bible College for his Master of Arts in pastoral studies and earned his Master of Divinity at Eastern Mennonite Seminary in 2015. “I had been - for many years - pastor of a church plant in Lancaster Mennonite Council in Lancaster city, Assured Hope Community Church,” he noted. Helping Brown is his wife, Barbara. “She’s been through a lot of training as well to be a good partner with me in ministry. She has a passion for teaching,” Brown said. Brown characterizes his pastoral style as Bible-based. “I believe in meeting people where they’re at and getting to know them,” Brown said. “We’re a traditional church with a contemporary flair. I try to be exciting, not boring.” One of Brown’s hopes for Latta Memorial is to have the church become more actively involved in the community. An example is the upcoming Community Fun Day, a new event with entertainment, food and fun for everyone. The Community Fun Day is being held at Latta Memorial Church on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rain date is Saturday, Sept. 21. There will also be a yard sale, timed to coincide with Christiana’s annual boroughwide yard sale from 7 to 10 a.m. The Community Fun Day will include free food, fun and fellowship for the entire family with music, games, prize drawings and a variety of activities for visitors of all ages. “We will have an intergenerational table; that’s important to me. (It will be) a place to have a dialogue for individuals to talk and see what’s going on back and forth,” Brown said. Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church is located at 23 Green St., Christiana. For more information, readers may call the church office at 610-593-5467 or visit www.latta memorialpc.com. The Sunday worship service is held at 10:45 a.m., with Sunday school for all ages at 9:45 a.m.

to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate

As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a lifesize NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “ We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in Hospice & Community Care staff members (from left) Devon $80,000 last year, but not many Fiore, special events coordinator; Coco Minardi, donor relations Amish people attend the aucmanager; and Allie Bucher, communications manager, display a tion,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish tiny sample of the items that will be sold at the 35th annual folks, the auction committee Labor Day Auction in Quarryville on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2. asked for advice, and “add tools”

was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercialgrade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-it-yourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked. The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flourished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed. Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s event brought in $760,000. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,” she marveled. The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their allyou-can-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2. Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler

baseball cards from 1909 and 1911. The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation stays for large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided. For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said. The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. In 2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County. HCC also offers services for people who have experienced tragic loss, including the death of pets. To donate items for the auction, readers may contact special events coordinator Devon Fiore at 717-391-2434 or dfiore@ hospicecommunity.org. For more information about the event, folks may visit www.Labor DayAuction.org.

6TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION!

praying,” said John between bites as he enjoyed his potluck dinner at the church. “The response has been so positive.” John said that Sandy, who generally travels 2 to 3 miles ahead of him while he is walking, has asked people along the route how the couple can pray for them. “People start crying, pouring out their hearts, asking for prayer,” said John, who recalled several talks with farmers in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. “We walked through fields that were muddy, and they couldn’t get the tractors in to plant or the seed was rotting,” he said, adding that one of the farmers told him, “I think God is trying to get our attention.” John received his first call to embark on a prayer walk while he and Sandy were serving as missionaries in Ireland working with Harvest Network International. “I suddenly received a burden for the United States,” said John, who was in Ireland with Sandy from 1991 to 1998. “After a year of trying to discern what the Lord was saying, we turned the reins over to another couple and moved back to the United States.” Back in Minnesota, John began doing pastoral work. “I would go to the Mall of America to pray daily, and I would walk around the mall, so people called me the pastor of the Mall of America.” John said that in 1998, God gave him a vision of walking across America, along with a verse. “Genesis 13:17 came to me,”

said John. “‘Get up and walk the length and the breadth of the land.’” John began to ask God what the cause would be for the action. “I felt the Lord was saying, ‘There are tumultuous times coming to America, and I am going to grant you unusual favor with the press.’” On Sept. 21, 1998, John began walking from the Canadian border in Minnesota, and he ended the walk when he arrived in Gulfport, Miss., on Jan. 4, 1999. His journey was chronicled by a country music radio station that asked him to call in weekly with updates. Billy Graham’s organization interviewed John four times, and he was also interviewed by Bill Bright. John said God’s message for listeners was that tumultuous times were coming, and it was important to pray. “This was before 9/11,” noted John. In April of 1999, John and Sandy traveled to the West Coast to begin his first crosscountry walk. “We started in a fishing village in Oregon,” recalled John, who said that the walk ended in Rehoboth Beach, Del., in November of 1999. “Again, we had favor with the press,” said John. In 2008, John felt the Lord calling him to walk from Portugal to China. He began in Cabo da Roca, Portugal, the westernmost point of continental Europe, and walked 6,020 miles to Almaty, Kazakhstan, near China, while praying blessings on the countries he passed through. During the recent trip, John carried a special flag bearing the image of a pine tree and the words “An Appeal to Heaven.” The flag is a replica of one that George Washington

John (left) and Sandy Halvorsen displayed the flag they carried when they visited St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township in July. The couple stopped for dinner at the church as John worked to complete his prayer walk across America. The Halvorsens left Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 31, 2018, and arrived in Manhattan on July 31. used during the Revolutionary War. “They knew at the time that unless an appeal to heaven was made, the Revolutionary War would not be won,” said Sandy. “John felt he should carry this flag, as we are making an appeal to heaven for awakening for this nation. We need the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We need the Lord,” she said. Readers who wish to learn more about the Halvorsens’ mission may visit www.prayerwalkamerica.com.

an adoptive mom myself, their mission obviously resonates with me,” said Fredlund. “And another thing I love about Brittany’s Hope is that every penny goes to the children and not to administrative costs.” Fredlund serves on the board of Brittany’s Hope and approached executive director Mai-Lynn Sahd about potential projects that Life Changes could help with. Sahd suggested building a house for a family in need. “It was the perfect opportunity

for us as a real estate company a perfect fit,” Fredlund said. Fredlund and her colleagues set a goal of raising $7,500 - a bit more than the approximately $5,000 needed to build one house through Brittany’s Hope in Vietnam. Through advertising the initiative on social media, sharing with clients, and participating as a team in the Brittany’s Hope 2018 Walk of Love fundraiser, Life Changes raised nearly $15,000. a celebration that could somehow involve all of the business’s clients. One agent suggested doing a larger-scale version of the pay-it-forward program that Life Changes operates, and Fredlund loved the idea. Through pay-it-forward, Life Changes real estate agents donate a portion of their commission earned when a deal is closed to the charity of the client’s choice. According to Fredlund, that has led to more than $350,000 being donated to various charities thus far. A fundraising endeavor independent of payit-forward, however, would be new for the company. When it came to selecting a recipient, Fredlund immediately thought of Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit that aims to help orphaned and at-risk children through international special needs adoption grants and humanitarian initiatives. “Being

able to contribute toward building homes for two families. In May, Fredlund and her husband and two adult children accompanied a group of Elizabethtown College students and professors, as well as other community members, on a trip to Vietnam to help with the building project. Sahd noted that the organization is judicious in the building process, allowing international volunteers to contribute to some parts of the project while still ensuring that the work is done by local residents so as not to take away economic opportunities. Anyone whom the organization builds a home for contributes something - whether labor, finances, or something else - toward completing the project. One of the homes built was for Miss Lieu, a young widow with two children living in a mud house with a collapsed roof. She had originally approached Brittany’s Hope about needing to place her children in one of the organization’s homes for children, as she was lacking means to repair the home, pay medical bills from her husband’s illness, and cover living expenses. Instead, Brittany’s Hope was able to build Miss Lieu a new home, complete with a sturdy roof to endure the rainy season as well as a bathroom, which the old house did not have. In spite of the language barrier, Fredlund connected with Miss Lieu and her children. “The hope (Miss Lieu) had was amazing to see. When I was there, she was glowing,” Fredlund shared. “One of the translators, (Le Thi Tu) Hong, said, ‘Their lives are forever changed,’ and that really stuck with me.” Fredlund also got to meet the two children that she sponsors through the Brittany’s Hope child sponsorship program. “It was one of the highlights of my life to see those families,” described Fredlund. In the future, Fredlund would like to return to Vietnam with her colleagues and others interested in helping. “Brittany’s Hope went above and beyond. I’ve been on a lot of trips and very few of them were run as well as Brittany’s Hope,” remarked Fredlund. “My goal is to help other businesses that want to give back.” For more information on Brittany’s Hope, readers may visit www.brittanyshope.org. Registration is open for the 2019 Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk, which is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Food Bank Receives Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help fight hunger in the Food Bank’s 27-county service area through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application assistance. With this grant, the food bank will scale access to SNAP among eligible households, with particular emphasis on reaching seniors. SNAP is a federal nutrition program dedicated to helping millions of people who face hunger. According to the food bank, SNAP improves food security, offers benefits that enable families to purchase healthier foods, and frees up household resources that can be used for preventative services and needed medical care. The food bank says that more than 15 percent of Americans eligible for SNAP currently do not receive this benefit, and seniors are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and barriers to SNAP access. Among seniors, 58% of eligible individuals are not enrolled in SNAP. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s team of SNAP experts provides assistance and helps individuals determine their eligibility for SNAP benefits. Team members are available to assist in the application process through the bilingual Food Stamps Helpline at 877-999-5964. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s programs that reach more than 136,000 individuals each month include ElderShare, MilitaryShare, Fresh Express, BackPack, Kids Café, Summer Pantries and Summer Feeding. Last year, the food bank provided nearly 45 million meals and distributed more than 11 million pounds of produce from its locations in Harrisburg and Williamsport. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation provide donations of both food and funds to the Feeding America nationwide network of 200 food banks. For more information about the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, readers may visit www .centralpafoodbank.org or call 717-564-1700.

School Supply Lists Posted Online Parents have a new tool this year as a number of local schools’ supply lists are now posted on TeacherLists. Parents can visit www.teacher lists.com/parents to find their child’s exact supply list. Users of the website may then proceed to prefilled shopping carts on the websites for Target, Walmart, Office Depot, Amazon, or Staples to purchase the items and have them shipped to the shopper’s home. Target, Walmart, Office Depot and Staples also offer in-store pickup. A total of more than 1 million classrooms from 50,000 schools now have lists posted on TeacherLists. The lists include required and requested items as well as specific notes and clarifications from teachers and school staff members. For more information, readers may visit www.teacherlists.com /parents.
