Restart Banquet To Feature Josh McDowell BY ANN MEAD ASH

Commemorating And Raising Awareness Pennsylvania Riding Club To Hold Event

“When this happened to Linda, it really hit home … being parents and realizing the danger our teenagers are in,” said Jennifer King. She and her husband, Wayne, both members of the Pennsylvania Riding Club, are working with American Bikers on a Mission to organize the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride. Stoltzfoos was kidnapped and murdered in 2020. Wayne, who was born into the Plain community, is friends with Sam Blank, a spokesman for the Stoltzfoos family. “I wanted to

make sure this was done right,” said Wayne. “A focus of our club is bridging the gap between the biker community and the (Plain) community.” With that goal in mind, Wayne and other members of the club plan to hold the ride on Saturday, Sept. 11. Riders will meet at Ephrata Community Church (ECC), 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. for registration. The ride will leave at noon and follow a route that will take Route 322 east to Farmersville Road to Shirk Road to Route 23 through New Holland to Route 897. The ride will end at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community,

210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl. A short ceremony including the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, announcements, and a safety briefing will be held at ECC. At Weaverland, Andrea McHenry, a representative of FREE, a Berks County-based anti-human trafficking organization active in Reading, will speak briefly. McHenry said she plans to share statistics about human trafficking. “We do education on how to take action against human trafficking and how to identify and respond to victims,” explained McHenry. “We do prevention work with children in an effort to keep them safe.” FREE

The organization is in the process of opening a refuge home in the Reading area. With the ride being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Wayne noted that riders from Never Forget 9/11 will leave Manheim and join the ride when it leaves ECC. In addition, the Green Castle American Legion Riders Color Guard will be present. There is no charge to take part, but Jennifer requested that those who plan to participate search for

Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions, sees the goals of the RTCM in space mission terms. “Restart is the rocket booster that helps (students) get into the orbit of sobriety and recovery,” said Santiago. Once students are orbiting among the stars, Santiago said, they are sustained by connecting to a local church where they can continue to grow spiritually. “We help them blast off, but they have to utilize the resources in the community,” said Santiago. So, for RTCM’s sixth annual fall banquet, it is only fitting that the organization is featuring Josh McDowell, author of “Evidence

Halfway through the week, freshman Hayden Winey was pleased with his progress. “After yesterday, I realized it was easier than I expected,” he said. “Before that I had only marched without playing or played without marching.” Weather was mild the week of band camp, and by Wednesday, the members had about half the drill and music complete, which was what Corrao had hoped they would accomplish. Heverin said it was nice that band members could enjoy evening activities again this year. “We have minigolfing night and a movie night,” he said, adding that a party was held earlier in the week. During the day, the fun quotient was raised with theme days, including USA Day, Beach Day, Twin

Rob Corrao, Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) marching band director, wanted something fun and uplifting to raise spirits for this year’s band members and audiences. He chose the theme “Tribute to Motown” and scored a win with both the band’s drum majors. “I love the music. It’s so much fun to play,” said drum major Olivia Ammon. Drum major Nathan Heverin agreed. “Motown is a great style of music.” The 28 PVHS band members, including six color guard members, were hard at work on the show from Aug. 2 through 6, with practice from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. Corrao had scheduled a practice for every other week prior to band camp, adding an extra practice the week before, to help familiarize students with the music and the drill. The 2021 show will include well-known tunes, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” made famous by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell; “After the Love

Has Gone,” by Earth, Wind & Fire; and “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder. Heverin will conduct the first song, and Ammon will conduct the final song. Ammon will play a flute solo on “After the Love Has Gone.” Trumpeter Alex Kauffman will have a solo on the same song, and color guard Tori Sensenig will be in the spotlight as well. The featured twirler for this year’s show is Kyleigh Jarvis. The drill, which was written by Ryan Kriebel, will change with the tempo and flow of the music. “On the first song, (band members) will be setting up more (defined) shapes on the field,” said assistant band director Vince Shickora. “‘After the Love Has Gone’ is more fluid, so (band members will be moving in) flowing lines where they follow each other.” Shickora explained that the drill mimics the music, so the drill for the final song also has more structure to it. Color guard director Jennifer Bilby said that guard members use 6-foot-flags and swing flags in the show. A number of the band members are new this year, so learning to march and play music at the same time was a challenge.

Make-A-Wish Announces Fundraising Total Truck Convoy in the order of their fundraising dollars. The drivers will learn their position at the Convoy Banquet to be held at the Barnstormers game in Lancaster on Sunday, Sept. 26. The top fundraising driver will be invited to throw out the first pitch of the game. The banquet will be by invitation only to drivers, committee members, and volunteers, but the public will be welcomed to attend the game to cheer on these truck drivers.

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy raised over $510,000 this year. The convoy was unable to hold a traditional carnival this year, so driver fundraising had a bigger impact than usual on this total. Over $228,000 of the total raised was raised by 30 fundraising drivers. The top 30 fundraising drivers from this year will lead next year’s Mother’s Day

In addition to the drivers raising funds for Make-AWish this year, Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction generated $162,000 for the truck convoy from the sale of a replica 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe built in-house, as well as the tools used to build the car. pare young people to deal with issues they may face later. McDowell noted that developing an honest selfimage is especially important. “How you see yourself will determine most relationships,” he explained. “If you cannot accept yourself as you are with your blemishes and your positive points, you cannot trust somebody else to accept you. As a result, you don’t establish close relationships.” Conversely, McDowell added, if we can see ourselves as God sees us, we can trust others to as well. Recalling his passion to write “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” considered a highly influential Christian book, McDowell, shared that he was inspired by his student peers. “When I went off to college, I was bitter, hurt, mad, ticked off,” said McDowell, who noticed a group of students who seemed to have a genuine love and care for those around them. “That got my attention,” said McDowell,

For McDowell, who has spoken in more than 100 countries, responding positively to RTCM’s request simply lined up with the goals of his nearly 60 years of ministry. “Restart’s mission is where my heart is with young people,” said McDowell, who noted that many of the problems of life begin during youth. “If I am going to have a lasting impact, I have to start with young people,” he said, adding that building confidence and positive relationships can pre-

who asked the students what their secret was. A young woman told him, “Jesus Christ.” McDowell did not want to hear about Jesus. “They challenged me until they ticked me off,” he said. “I set out to write ‘Evidence That Demands a Verdict’ against Christianity, but I ended up spending 13 years documenting why I thought it was true, and that brought me to where I am today.” Seating at the banquet will be limited. “Squish Squad” Combats Spotted Lanterflies in 2014. On the Squish Squad’s first educational and scouting trip earlier this summer in Lancaster County, students found a few spotted lanternflies in their black and white-spotted nymph stage, charted the insects’ locations, and then squashed them. Students also spent time learning more about the insects and planning activities for late summer and fall. The Squad plans to partner with county conservation districts and nature preserves. It also intends to lead workshops on how to build spotted lanternfly traps using materials found around the home. A project working group is taking photos of spotted lanternflies in various life stages for a pamphlet the students plan to produce. CBF’s Student Leadership Program and participation in the Squish Squad is open to high school students and is designed to give them a

Lebanon VAMC Awards Grants Southcentral Pennsylvania low-income veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless will have access to crucial services from local organizations via grants provided by Lebanon VA Medical Center’s (VAMC) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, which is authorized by Congress. Five local organizations in nine counties around Lebanon VAMC received grants from the center totaling over $3.1 million. The Lebanon VAMC Health Care for Homeless Veteran staff has already helped to provide services to veteran families this year, such as eviction prevention, housing security deposits, utility assistance, and hotel placements during the pandemic. A list of grantees is available at www.va.gov/homeless /ssvf.asp. More than 260 organizations nationwide received SSVF grants. To learn more about the SSVF program, visit the aforementioned website.
