iplining, visiting a volcano park, horseback riding, touring a butterfly garden and taking part in a cooking class were just some of the activities that local students enjoyed during a nine-day excursion to Costa Rica.

Participants in the trip were students from Cocalico, Pequea Valley (PV), Ephrata and Twin Valley high schools. The students were accompanied by teacher chaperones Lori Warfel from Ephrata, Kate Gomez and Corry Bilby from Cocalico, Betsy Techman and Ruth Hernandez from Twin Valley and Jennifer Bilby from Pequea Valley.

“It’s great because it’s so hands-on. There is so much to see and do,” said Jennifer. “While I love museums, this is so much more interesting and active. (The students and chaperones) were so happy they went.”

Every other year, local students have the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica in a travel cohort made up of local school students. The trip is presented by WorldStrides, a student travel company. Students at various schools are invited to participate. “We put up signs and, in our case, told (the students) about (the trip) in our classes and we had an initial meeting for those who (were) interested,” said Jennifer, who teaches Spanish at PV High School. “At first we advertise to students in Spanish classes. Then

it goes to whoever is interested.”

The cohort has traveled to Costa Rica every other year since 2012, missing only 2020 due to the pandemic. The students fundraise together, have group

meetings to prepare and collect school supplies ahead of time to take to the children in Costa Rica.

Jennifer said one of the goals of the trip is for students to enhance their Spanish-speaking skills,

giving them an opportunity to use the language with native speakers. “No one is required to speak Spanish, but some jump at the opportunity,” she noted. “Our guide that we had is really great with the students, so students can practice with him if they want to before they interact with everybody else.”

As part of the trip, students and their teachers visited Arenal Volcano National Park and the hot springs there, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. They also went horseback riding,

Keeping Jazz Alive

Fred Hughes, director of the New Holland Band (NHB) and founder of the nonprofit Jazz Alive, is a man with a musical mission. “The mission (of Jazz Alive) is dedicated to the preservation of jazz,” said Hughes. “That includes community concerts and school residencies and assemblies,” he added.

To help support that mission, “An Evening with the Fred Hughes Trio” will be presented in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m.

In addition to Hughes on piano, the trio features Philadelphia drummer Dan Monaghan, a musician Hughes has been playing with regularly, and bass player Steve Meashey, whom Hughes has known since 1985. Hughes said the group’s repertoire will include pieces from the Great American Songbook. “I like to introduce the music of great piano players, so it will be Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Bill Evans, and some more piano players,” noted Hughes.

Hughes’ love of jazz grew out of his experience with the First Army Band in Seoul, South Korea. Originally a tuba player, Hughes played the organ as a prelude to the NHB spring

Bingo fundraiser to aid park rangers abroad

A bingo fundraiser will take place on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. in the banquet room at the New Holland American Legion, 35 S. Hoover Ave., New Holland. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. Cash and designer bags will be the prizes. In addition to bingo, the event will feature door prizes, giveaway drawings, and refreshments.

The fundraiser is held locally

by Tony Andes, who will participate in a motorcycle ride in the Kingdom of Bhutan in November through Rally for Rangers. The organization has the mission to protect the world’s special places by empowering park rangers with new motorcycles and equipment. The organization’s work has reached Bhutan, Mongolia, Peru, and beyond.

See Bingo pg 5

THE LEAVES

The bingo event will help to support Andes’ goal of raising $6,000 to $12,000 to purchase one or two motorcycles for a park ranger in Bhutan. All donations will go to the Mongol Ecology Center, the sponsor of Rally for Rangers.

Bhutan is a small country located between India and China, and the country includes a portion of the Himalaya mountain range. In Bhutan, illegal logging and poaching put strain on endangered species such as red pandas, takin, Bengal tigers, and snow leopards.

Andes, a resident of New Holland, has been a motorcycle rider for more than 35 years, and his hobby has included racing, travel, and more. For the last 12 years or so, he has concentrated on adventure riding - that is, riding on and off the road in remote areas. He has also been a motorcycle safety instructor for the last 17 years.

Andes learned of Rally for Rangers last year at an adventure rally in New Hampshire. Through an application process, he was selected to be one of 15 riders to participate in the trip to Bhutan.

A limited number of tickets to the bingo event are available. To register, visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Rally for Rangers Bingo.” More information is available by emailing justineabs23@ gmail.com. To donate, visit https:// rallyforrangers.betterworld.org/ campaigns/bhutan-2024/p/ tony-andes.

went ziplining at Arenal Mundo Aventura, visited a butterfly conservatory and ecological farm and took part in a cooking class at Playa Rayada, where they made salad, homemade corn tortillas and arroz con pollo (rice with chicken).

Other activities included participating in a boat tour of Palo Verde National Park, visiting with students at a technical school,

visiting the Britt Coffee plantation and taking part in a guided sightseeing tour of San José, the capital of Costa Rica.

Jennifer said the students really enjoyed the trip because they were able to participate in community activities and see local traditions firsthand. “I think the cooking

lessons and the ziplining were really a top hit with them,” she said. “The cooking was so interactive and fun, plus you get to eat (the) food (you prepare). Hot springs are always popular, too.”

When asked what the students’ favorite part of the trip was, Jennifer replied, “It’s hard to pick one. They

seemed to really enjoy all of the trip. She added that the cohort of traveling teachers will soon be planning for the 2026 trip. “We find out what the travelers like and don’t like for the next trip,” she said. “We try to make our trip better each year.”

The students agreed that the

trip is one they will not soon forget. “Traveling together isn’t just about the places we go; it’s about the experiences we share and the memories we create,” said Adelynn Yunginger of Ephrata High School.

“It was truly the best choice I have ever made. Not only did I get to spend time with my friends

for the next generation. “If you go to a jazz concert or a festival, it’s a lot of older folks,” Hughes pointed out. “I want to make sure in the future, folks want to play the music. It’s a big-picture thing.” Hughes’ Army experience gave him the impetus to move forward with his dream. “When I was in the Jazz Ambassadors, I was the clinic coordinator,” explained Hughes. “I saw the need to go into schools … to augment their programs.”

To that end, Jazz Alive representatives have visited schools to perform for students, work with them at their school, and then perform a concert with students in the evening. Hughes pointed out that the program is important to broaden the students’ education with exposure to jazz music.

The upcoming GSV concert will be the first since Jazz Alive became a Pennsylvania nonprofit. Hughes sees it as the start of a new chapter for the organization. “I’m hoping this will be the beginning of doing concerts in the region, starting here in Lancaster County,” he said. Readers who would like to learn more about the organization or purchase tickets to the concert may visit www.jazz-alive.org. Tickets may also be available at the door prior to the concert.
