Ready To Lead Jennie Straub Becomes Director At Cornerstone BY ANN MEAD ASH
he new director at Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, 5380 Lincoln Highway, Gap, has a wealth of experience in social services, ranging from counseling to teaching teen dating violence prevention, but it is networking that was on Straub’s mind when asked about her background. “I was networking with community agencies (in my prior position), and I had a lot of contacts,” recalled Straub. “That was one of the reasons (then-director) Debbie (Davenport) said she hired me (as client services and outreach specialist in 2018).” Straub’s experience in networking occurred when she worked for Lancaster County Juvenile Probation, where, along with another officer, she set up a community service program by connecting with various county organizations. In her previous role at Cornerstone, she worked with clients, facilitated educational programs, and oversaw

curriculum focused on preventing teen dating violence, to well over 600 students at area schools, including Solanco and Oxford, in the last two years. She also schooled student assistant program teachers at Garden Spot High School in the details of the program. “These are teachers who are identified as safe (people) for kids who need to talk or are struggling,” she explained. Looking ahead, Straub will be working to implement Cornerstone’s current strategic plan, which includes offering more offsite engagements, diversifying services through innovation, and developing recurring revenue streams. “(We’d also like to see) more client referrals coming from community partnerships,” said Straub, noting she plans to continue developing relationships with other local organizations. It was John Bryant, chief executive officer of Christ’s Home, a ministry to provide care to children in several counties that dates back to 1903, who had the idea of asking Rep. Bryan Cutler, recently re-elected speaker of the house for the Pennsylvania General Assembly, to speak at the organization’s 2021 Legacy Dinner. “(Cutler) is very well respected (by his colleagues),” said Bryant. “We have asked him to speak about what it’s like to be a person in a position of civil leadership who is a Christian.”

The ministry also serves Octorara Area and Oxford Area school districts. Before Straub began networking with area agencies, the Williamsport native majored in criminal justice at Edinboro University. After graduation, she worked at a maximum security juvenile facility for teen girls in Danville. She also served as a social worker for a foster care agency, counseling juveniles and their families for four years. is important,” said Moore. In 2019, Moore was nominated and selected to receive Freedoms Foundation’s National Award, the George Washington Honor Medal. According to David Harmer, president and CEO of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Moore’s book “Journey Into Darkness” exemplifies the essence of the National Awards: promotion of an understanding and appreciation for the country’s heritage, principles, and freedoms. More information can be found by visiting www.jarthurmoore.com. According to Moore, Lancaster County is directly connected to Civil War history. “Lancaster County was the fifth part of the efforts to get to Harrisburg, but (the Confederates) got stopped at the bridge in Wrightsville,” he explained. “Thousands of troops were recruited out of Lancaster County, and troops from Lancaster County fought in Gettysburg. It’s part of America’s history and part of our (local) history.” At the weekend event, there will be tours of the camp, a food vendor, tactical demonstrations, and battle re-enactments. Visitors will be able to meet and talk with boy soldiers from the war, President Abraham Lincoln, first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, and the Lincolns’ sons Robert and Tad. “It will be a family event,” stated Moore. “Kids can recognize that children were part of the history, too.” At the event, there will be a small fee for house tours and parking. There will be no charge for vans and buses. A period photographer is needed for the event. Those interested can email Moore at joe moore3@comcast.net or call 717-351-5450. Callers should leave a message with callback information. For more information about the encampment, email solanco historical@gmail.com.

in our community
For many in our community, taxes can feel like a burden. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) volunteers work to help lift that burden by offering low income families free tax preparation. Tax refunds give these families a springboard for the future by putting their hard-earned money back into their hands. It's a simple way to help in your community. Want to volunteer with VITA? We need volunteers like you! Contact smethers@uwlanc.org for more details and to sign up for an Informational Session in September or October.
“Volunteering with VITA is a great way to help people save money and not be worried about the process.” -Lenny, VITA Volunteer
WHY VOLUNTEER WITH VITA?
1. MAKE AN IMPACT
VITA volunteers directly affect the community in tangible ways. Clients saved over $3 million in tax preparation fees in 2020. As a volunteer tax preparer, you can help families get their tax refunds, which helps build financial stability.
2. FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE With day, evening, and weekend hours at more than 20 locations across the county, you have the opportunity to help as your schedule allows. Plus, tax season isn't year-round, so you get to enjoy your summers.
3. LEARN A NEW SKILL No experience is necessary. As a volunteer, you have the chance to try you hand at a new skill. VITA will spend time preparing you to become certified in tax preparation through free online and classroom training.
Once you're certified, you will work side by side with Lancaster County residents to prepare their tax returns. Our goal is to provide services for 11,200 residents this year. It's a great way to meet your neighbors and strengthen your community, and make an immediate difference.

specializing in health care. More than 15 years ago, he ran for the legislature. Christ’s Home was founded in Philadelphia by Dr. Albert Oetinger; his wife, Catharine; and Katharina Krausslach. The Lancaster County campus was donated to the organization by Charles F. Leader in 1935. Leader and his wife, Cora, purchased the house in the late 1920s, and Leader donated the house and grounds to Christ’s Home in memory of his wife following her death. Leader also left funds to Christ’s Home. Within a year of the organization’s receiving the bequest, 12 preschool children were living at the house. According to Wright, the home initially helped struggling parents dealing with issues of poverty, but children without parents came to the home as well. “In our first 35 years, it was all preschool kids, but in the 1970s, we started sending children to Pequea Valley schools,” said Wright. Care-
givers, often single women called matrons, lived in the cottages. Married couples with their own children also provided care. “It wasn’t shift work. It was a family-style approach,” noted Wright. Wright noted that by the end of the 1990s, the organization had begun to work with Bucks, Montgomery, and Lancaster counties to provide services to the children and youth agencies through contacts. “It was a blended model initially because we didn’t push out the private placements,” said Wright. Most children remain at the home less than 18 months. Less than five years ago, a program for teenage mothers opened in Paradise. The Teen/Mother /Baby program supports girls who have made a parenting plan and helps teach them parenting skills. Bryant explained that only about $0.75 of every $1 of care Christ’s Home provides is reimbursed by contracts so it is necessary for the organization to hold fundraisers like the banquet to cover the gap.

The community where Cutler lived in Peach Bottom played a significant role at that crucial time. “The community wrapped their arms around his family,” said Vernon Wright, chief development officer with Christ’s Home. “That was a driver for (Cutler) to serve the community.” Cutler eventually pursued a law degree
