Friendship Community To Hold 5K Run/Walk BY ANN MEAD ASH As a runner, Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community, knows how 5Ks have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. While many organized runs have been converted to virtual events, many participants, Link included, miss running in person. So, when Link had the chance to offer input for the annual Friendship Community 5K Run/Walk, she liked the idea of offering options. “We decided to focus on the 5K and have it be both virtual and in-person,” said Link. “Anyone who wants to support us but is feeling hesitant about being in groups of people, we understand and appreciate that.” For those runners, the 5K offers a virtual participation opportunity, which includes the same goodie bag, but can be done at home at the runner’s leisure. For runners who want to join others in a 5K, the event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, with check-in and registration prior to the race beginning at 7 a.m. The run/walk race will start at 8 a.m., and awards will be presented at approximately 9 a.m. “(We’re hoping) it won’t be humid in the morning, and it will be great (September) weather,” noted Link. The run will be a professionally timed race on a safe off-road course,

which loops through Landis Homes and finishes back at the starting line. Approximately a quarter mile of the course is on grass, a mile is packed fine gravel, and the rest is paved. Link hopes the event will appeal to those who have missed running in traditional 5Ks. “We are trying to expand our horizons by connecting with folks who haven’t heard of us before to do some sort of in-person run because theirs was canceled,” she said. “It will look a little different, but we want to offer that race experience.” Organizers will station people on the course to provide cheers and encouragement to create the exciting race opportunity many runners have been missing. “Part of the fun of running is starting at the line … hearing the gun go off … we want to pay respect to those people who haven’t had any (live) race opportunities,” said Link, who added that because the event is a run/walk, those wishing to take things more slowly are welcome too. “Come and have fun and walk three miles,” she said. “We’re excited for this.” “We have monetary prizes for the winners of the in-person race,” reported Link. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners, and medals will be awarded to the top three runners in eight age groups. The 2019 race first-place overall finishers were Merlin Lantz of Leola with a time of 18:58 and Ann King of Lititz with a time of 23:16. See Friendship Community pg 5

GMTRC Horse Show Slated Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual horse show on Saturday, Sept. 12. The first class will start at 9 a.m. and the show will run until approximately 3:30 p.m. This year’s show, titled “The Greystone Giddy Up,” will feature a Western theme. The horse show will feature 34 riders demonstrating their achievements in horseback riding and horsemanship over the year. Each student’s instructor and volunteer team will be on-site to cheer on the riders. Board member and equestrian Marilu Garofola will serve as the judge. Food will be available for purchase. Guests are encouraged to socially distance and wear face

masks whenever possible. The event is free and open to the public. The show is made possible by 19 class sponsors and 34 additional sponsors and advertisers. GMTRC is a therapeutic riding center for adults and children with special needs. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will offer Railroad Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees will explore railroad stations and their place in American history. The virtual program will include pieces from the museum’s collection and details about the unique architecture of stations. From 10 to 11 a.m., a live virtual tour of the architecture of the museum and the different stations that influenced its design will take place. The tour

will feature large station artifacts, including the Solari train board from 30th Street Station, on loan from Amtrak. From 1 to 2 p.m., a live virtual tour of the museum’s Steinman Station, re-created to portray a typical early 20th-century station, will show the railroad station as the hub of yesterday’s small town America. said Ranck, who noted about half the estimated $3,500 had been sponsored by the end of August. By June, Ranck, Lauffer, and Myers were nailing down the details of the event. Ranck noted that they chose to hold the livestock show and sale at the same time of year as the New Holland Farmers Fair for the youth involved. “It’s important for (the young people) and the buyers to have that consistent deadline,” she said. Ranck stated that organizers have appreciated working with local businesses such as the New Holland Sales Stables and Horning Tent Rentals. Shavings for the pens will be provided by Tractor Supply Company. “The event will be fully sponsored by local agribusinesses,” said Ranck, who noted the expo has received overwhelming support from area residents and businesses. “This is important to our youth, our families, and our community,” she said. “We will thank our sponsors with sponsorship banners,” Ranck noted, adding that special sponsorship banners will be created for the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion. Organizers hope to see the same number of participants as have taken part in past fair shows, which would mean up to 20 young people showing sheep

All events will take place in tents located at the New Holland Sales Stables parking lot, 101 W. Fulton St., New Holland. This is the same location the New Holland Farmers Fair livestock show has been held for several years, but the event is in no way affiliated with the New Holland Farmers Fair. Weigh-ins for all animals will be held at the tents from 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 1. On Oct. 2 at 9 a.m., the market swine show will be held. The market lamb show will begin at noon. The goat show will be held at 3 p.m., followed by the livestock sale at 6:30 p.m. Cleanup will commence immediately following the livestock sale. Ranck reported that the trio was discussed the possibility of holding a show in late May and in June, they researched costs and assessed the availability of resources. “By the end of June, we figured we could make it work,” she said, adding that as a new and independent entity, the biggest barrier was the financial aspect. “It was really cool to work with the local agriculture community because everyone wanted that opportunity for our youth,”

While they are aware that some families made decisions in May not to undertake a project due to the uncertainty concerning fairs and shows, it is possible that youths will come from other areas of the county to take part. If that is the case, Ranck said area youths would have first priority in showing. Ranck added that organizers are excited to be able to offer this opportunity for the youths. “We see the valued experience there, and we want them to have that,” she said. Those who take part in and attend the shows and sale are encouraged to wear face coverings and practice social distancing. The Giant Company announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 132 Giant and Martin’s Food Markets in-store pharmacies. New this flu season, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will also offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 17. Patients may pull into a spot in a designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their car. For customers who cannot be safely vaccinated from inside their vehicle or for walk-up customers, seating will be available. Social distancing measures will be in place if more than one patient is being served. Store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times, are available at www.giantfood stores.com/flushot or www.martinsfoods.com/flushot. In addition to the drive-up flu vaccinations, customers can visit any in-store pharmacy to receive their vaccination now. The Keystone Games and Pennsylvania Senior Games have partnered with the KARES (Keystone Athletic, Recreation and eSports) Community to provide virtual opportunities for fitness as a way of staying connected and maintaining or improving one’s level of physical fitness. The KARES Community’s focus is on the whole individual’s wellness - physical, mental, emotional, and social. The Keystone Games has been providing sporting events for the last 39 years, but this is the first year it will offer a virtual race and introduce esports to its athletes. The Pennsylvania Food Code will soon require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be onsite at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer the course at many locations across the state.
