Limeville Church to host Kids Carnival

Abounce house, barrel train rides and children’s games will be featured at the Kids Carnival being presented at Limeville Church on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. All activities are free.

“Just bring yourself and your kids for a fun time,” said Melanie Shivery, who is an event organizer along with Deb Baldwin.

All children in attendance will receive a prize and free food.

“When they come, they will get a bag with a prize ticket in there and tickets for free food and snacks,” Shivery said, noting that children can choose their own prize from a prize table.

“There will also be information in the bag about the church, the (Limeville’s) Blessings store and the Monday night children’s program (beginning in October).”

Shivery is the coordinator of the church’s Limeville’s Blessings store, which offers free clothing,

hygiene products, basic household items and children’s toys to people in need. She posted flyers at the store about the upcoming carnival.

“Last year, we were close to 160 (in attendance), which was an increase from previous years,” said Shivery. “A lot of the families that are shopping (attend) when they hear it’s a free and a fun event. (The carnival) has really grown.”

All activities will take place outdoors in a grassy area behind the church. All children in attendance must be accompanied by an adult.

In the event of inclement weather, cancellation information will be posted on the church’s Facebook page, which has changed from www.facebook.com/Lime villeUMC to www.facebook.com/ Limeville1Church.

“Our new church Facebook page is named ‘Limeville Church’ since we are no longer part of the United Methodist Church,” Shivery noted.

The carnival is just one community outreach offered by Limeville Church. It also holds an annual

Christmas program for families and an Easter egg hunt.

Beginning on Oct. 14, the church will offer Great Bible Adventures, a weekly children’s program that will meet on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. “The kids learn a story from the Bible, sing, make crafts and have a snack. It’s a lot of fun,” Shivery said.

The church will also present a fall show in November. Vendors interested in participating in the event may call the church office at 717-442-4010.

The Sunday service at Limeville Church is held at 10:15 a.m. Sunday school for people of all ages is offered prior to the service at 9 a.m. All services are livestreamed on Facebook.

Limeville Church is located at 5783 Limeville Road, Gap. For more information about the church, visit the previously mentioned Facebook page or www .limevillechurch.org. To learn more about Limeville’s Blessings, visit www.facebook.com/ LimevillesBlessingsStore.

Megan Feveryear is on a mission. For the last few years, the Nashville resident - formerly of the eastern Lancaster County - has been bringing women’s conferences to the New Holland Church of the Nazarene. This fall, Feveryear is organizing a conference for women of all ages, but designed specifically to appeal to mothers and daughters.

“This one is (called) Grace Wants You,” said Feveryear, who explained the conference is named for the ministry she will present with at the New

Holland Church of the Nazarene, 428 Ranck Road, New Holland, on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is a cost to attend the conference for all registered participants, with an added fee for an optional lunch.

According to Feveryear, she became acquainted with Janene and Elena Dubbeld - “a sweet mother and daughter who do women’s conferences”- through a virtual Bible study the three were enrolled in during COVID-19 restrictions. “We are (all) passionate about women and ministry and pouring into each lady

Live entertainment will be provided by Blessing & Fowler from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Comprising musicians Zach Blessing and Nate Fowler, the duo performs soulful tunes and classic hits throughout central Pennsylvania. The event will also feature a live broadcast from WJTL from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and local mascots Johnny from Achenbach’s Pastries and Cylo from the Lancaster Stormers will make an appearance.

The open house will feature a variety of yard games and activities for children, including face painting and balloon twisting, and Cherry Hill Orchards will provide pumpkins for kids to decorate.

Guests may participate in several prize drawings during the open house, and prizes will include items and experiences donated by local businesses such as an espresso machine from Martin Appliances and a zip lining experience from Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. The prize drawing

will also feature tickets to local attractions such as American Music Theatre, Field of Screams, Decades and Go ‘N Bananas.

Attendees will have an opportunity to look behind the scenes at EPC during a self-guided tour of the plant, which will offer a close-up look at each department and how the

Lighthouse Assembly of God pastor Steve Ritchey was not present at the founding of the New Holland church, but he knows a great deal about the history of the organization, and he has deep respect for the roots of the congregation he has pastored for nearly three decades.

It is in that spirit that Steve and the members and staff of Lighthouse invite all those who have been associated with the church since its founding in 1976 to attend a homecoming service on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. at Garden Spot High School, 669 E. Main St., New Holland. The service will be followed by a fellowship picnic and other activities at Lighthouse’s current location, 105 Earland Drive, New Holland, beginning at 11:45 a.m. and tours of the new church building under construction at 1279 Main St., East Earl, at 12:45 p.m.

“This will be a celebration of what God has done in

this church’s history and looking toward the future of what God will do as we move into the new church,” said Steve, who hopes the congregation will be worshiping in the new sanctuary the week of Sunday, Dec. 8, which will mark Steve’s 30-year anniversary with Lighthouse.

Former Lighthouse pastors scheduled to attend the homecoming service are the Rev. Ralph Chapin and the Rev. Fred Clark, accompanied by their wives. Evi Machamer, the 98-year-old wife of a former pastor, plans to travel from Mechanicsburg to attend.

“(After the service), we are inviting everyone to 105 Earland (Drive) for a picnic under a tent,” said Landon Ritchey, youth and connections pastor with Lighthouse. Activities, in addition to the picnic, will include a picture station and inflatables for children to enjoy. Landon added that

to remind her that she is so loved and the underlying truth that we are all wanted by God’s grace,” explained Feveryear. “At the end, we decided we wanted to do something together aside from this Bible study.”

According to Feveryear, the day will begin with registration, followed by a worship kickoff led by Elena and then a welcome by Feveryear. “Janene, Elena’s mom, will share her incredible testimony,” said Feveryear, who noted that Janene was abandoned by her parents on the doorstep of a stranger when she was only a baby. “Those strangers became her adopted family,” noted Feveryear. “When she was only a day old, God was chasing after her from the doorsteps of the random stranger’s house.” Janene’s testimony will be followed by lunch and another time of worship, before a question-and-answer time, which will end at 3:30 p.m. “(Attendees) can ask any questions that are on their hearts,” said Feveryear.

Feveryear encourages area women to come and

take part in the event. “In this season, we need to be reminded more than ever that God’s grace is chasing after us,” she said. “No matter your age, you will hear that the grace of God is after you and wants you.”

Women who wish to take part in the conference may register ahead of time by

searching for “Grace Wants You” at https://app.ticket leap.com/events. Individuals may also register at the church on the day of the event. Those who wish to purchase a preferred ticket, which will include lunch at the church, are encouraged to register online by Friday, Oct. 11.

An uncommon presentation

Mark Kelley, an author and former broadcast journalist and teacher, remembers what inspired him to undertake his latest project - a biography of Lydia Hamilton Smith. “We watched Steven Spielberg’s movie about Abraham Lincoln,” recalled Kelley, who recounted how the second half of the movie delved into the life of Lancastrian Thaddeus Stevens and his work to pass the 13th Amendment. Kelley was intrigued when it was revealed in the movie that Stevens and Lydia, a mixed-race woman who at first appears to be Steven’s housekeeper, may have been involved in a committed relationship.

Kelley will discuss his book “An Uncommon Woman: The Life of Lydia Hamilton Smith” in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, as the featured presenter for the New Holland Area Histori-

cal Society (NHAHS).

Lydia was born in Gettysburg, and Stevens, who practiced law in that area, knew her when she was a youngster. In her late teens, Lydia married Jacob Smith, an African American man from Harrisburg.

During that same time period, Stevens, who had been raised in Vermont by a Baptist mother, was undergoing changes in his outlook. “Stevens had a crisis of conscience about slavery and became an abolitionist,” noted Kelley. While living in Gettysburg, Stevens worked with Quakers to run an Underground Railroad station at the iron works he owned there. “(Stevens) used houses on the property to harbor fugitives on their way to Canada,” explained Kelley. By 1840, Lydia and Jacob and their two sons had moved to Harrisburg. When the marriage ended in 1844, Lydia moved to Lancaster, where her cousin lived, eventually becoming Stevens’ housekeeper. From his research, Kelley

has come to believe that Lydia and Stevens had a relationship that would have been uncommon in the middle of the 19th century. “(A committed interracial relationship) was not at all popular anywhere in the country (at that time),” stated Kelley. According to Kelley’s book, Lydia assisted Stevens as he worked to pass not only the 13th, but also the 14th and 15th amendments. Stevens

had a Philadelphia artist paint a portrait of Lydia shortly after she moved to Lancaster. As possible evi

dence of their love, Lydia cared for Stevens during the last several years of his life when he was quite ill. Kelley believes that Lydia and Stevens lived together for more than 20 years. He also noted that Stevens sought to leave Lydia money from his estate, eventually having $5,000 in back wages paid to her upon his death. Stevens was buried in Shreiner-Concord Cemetery, one of the few Lancaster cemeteries that would allow African American burials

at the time. Lydia, however, does not rest beside him; she was buried in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery more than a decade after Stevens’ death.

Kelley was born in Waynesburg, but grew up in New Holland, attending Garden Spot High School before going on to earn his doctorate in journalism from Syracuse University. He worked in broadcast journalism for 25 years notably at WSTM TV Syracuse. Kelley’s teaching career took him to the University of Maine, where he taught journalism and mass communications. Achenbach’s Pastries to mark 70th anniversary

Since 1954, Achenbach’s Pastries, 375 E. Main St., Leola, has provided homestyle pastry products to generations of customers in the Lancaster area. The bakery is known for its long Johns, sticky buns, vanilla and pecan rings, pies and cakes.

Achenbach’s Pastries, with a leadership team composed of owners David Burkholder, Sharon Redcay and Andrew Orrs, still bakes with fresh ingredients and does not use typical additives like preservatives, humectants and synthetic gums.

The made-from-scratch products are available at the bakery in Leola, located 10 miles east of Lancaster on Route 23. The baked goods are also available at various retail locations, and some of the popular items are even available for shipping.

To celebrate Achenbach’s anniversary, Johnny the Long John will make a special appearance on Saturday, Sept. 14, starting at 8 a.m.
