Someone Who Understands ROFM Banquet Will Feature Darryl Strawberry BY ANN MEAD ASH

rowing up in Midland Park, N.J., Thomas Carr, who became the director of Revelations of Freedom Ministries (ROFM) in June, rooted for the New York Mets. “I grew up watching (Darryl Strawberry) play,” recalled Carr, who booked the Hall of Famer as the keynote speaker for ROFM’s eighth annual banquet. Carr had several reasons for engaging Strawberry for the event, but chief among them was Strawberry’s personal experience with addiction, in spite of his success in baseball. Strawberry also went through abuse, divorce, and cancer, and he served time in jail. He has emerged a born-again Christian with an understanding of those struggling with addiction. “He believes in the mission,” said Carr. ROFM, a faith-based, Christ-centered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions, will hold the annual fundraiser at

G

Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Wednesday, Oct. 20. Doors will open for appetizers at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Table sponsorships for the event are available. Seating will be limited, and those wishing to attend should register by Monday, Oct. 4. There is no cost to attend the event. A freewill offering will be received. Strawberry is a former professional right fielder and an author. He played 17 seasons in the major leagues, where he was known as a slugger whose every at-bat held homerun potential. He helped lead the New York Mets to a World Series championship and the New York Yankees to three World Series championships. He was also suspended three times for substance abuse. His memoir, “Straw: Finding My Way,” was published in April 2009. Carr had a career in banking and banking technology prior to applying to ROFM. He and his wife moved to New Holland three years

Nate Deen (left), formerly Nate Busko, and Stan Deen.

“I think Stan Deen was a remarkable man in the way he encouraged and helped other people,” said Dale Bradley of Inspiring Films. “He defined his life with that.” Dale has moved to Lancaster to make “Brave the Dark,” the story of the late Garden Spot High School (GSHS) teacher Stan Deen and the troubled young man he took in during the 1980s, Nate Busko, now Nate Deen. “But there are lots of men and women like that, so this is an everyman story,” continued Dale, who

runs Inspiring Films with his brother Grant. “Good movies need to resonate with people,” he added. “You need to know people like (the characters in the film) or be like (them) or wish you were like (them).” Grant discovered the true story behind the film about five years ago when visiting Lancaster County looking for possible film subjects. He met Nate, who works at Sight & Sound, and heard his story. Nate was orphaned at a young age after a tragedy involving his parents. He became part of the foster care system, eventually leaving as a teenager

ago after visiting the Lancaster area for decades. “I came to New Holland for the purpose of going into fulltime ministry,” said Carr. While continuing to work in the banking industry from home, Carr worked part time at Water Street Mission and Friendship Community. In May, he was taking part in a prayer meeting at Christian Fellowship Church, where he is a member. One of the ROFM board members asked that the group pray that the organization could find a new director. “I went home and thought, ‘Why not me? I want to go into ministry,’” Carr said. Carr, who will give an update on the ministry at the banquet, has made some changes since his arrival at ROFM, moving one employee to a marketing coordinator position and hiring a grant writer and donation coordinator, who will begin in October. Readers who are interested in attending the banquet may call 717-351-5680 or email banquet@rofm.org.

only to find himself homeless living in the car he had purchased with wages from a part-time job. Nate was using school showers and eating raw corn on the cob from the fields where he parked his car at night when Stan offered him a chocolate bar after class. When Nate found himself in jail only weeks later, Stan visited him, offering him a place to live and a second chance. “Brave the Dark” will begin filming in Lancaster this month, with scenes due to be shot at GSHS on weekends and holidays. Derek Dienner of Make/Films, who knew Stan, knows Nate, and graduated from GSHS in 2003, is co-producing with Inspiring Films to be sure Lancaster County authenticity and flavor are in the mix. To that end, Dienner has talked to the current owner of the Ritz in New Holland about including the marquis in some scenes and to ELANCO School District about using a retro gymnasium located in the middle school. Dienner reported that a chain of talented writers, directors, and actors has formed around the script for the story. “Grant got the script to director Damian Harris, who fell in

love with it and brought it to Joe McDougal, who is now assistant director, and he got Julio Macat, director of photography (involved),” explained Dienner. The movie will star Jared Harris as Stan, and Nicholas Hamilton as Nate. Residents of Lancaster County who knew Stan have risen to the occasion, reporting on how the Garden Spot Performing Arts founder influenced their lives. “A lot of the people who were impacted by Stan are involved in some way in this film,” said Dienner. “This movie is getting made because everyone knows who Stan was.” Dienner added that at the heart of the film is the importance of fatherhood. “That’s what it’s about,” he said. “It shows the love of a father.” This is Make/Films’ first feature film, and having the chance to work with a story that packs meaningful influence is important to Dienner. “(This story) has the potential to bring the fatherhood of Stan and the (redeemed) character of Nate to the world in a way that can make people say, ‘I can make a difference,’” he said. “What better way to start?”

Sweetness And Laughter BY ANN MEAD ASH

Coming off the COVID-19 restrictions that marked the last several months, staff at Life Awakening made the decision that the organization’s 13th annual fundraiser should be on the lighter side. With that goal in mind, they gave the event the theme “It’s Time to Laugh Again” and engaged Christian comedian Gordon Douglas to entertain following a fruit and dessert bar that will include gluten- free options. Life Awakening will hold the fundraiser on Thursday, Sept. 23, at Springside Barn, 1294 Weaverland Road, East Earl, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Douglas is a pastor and speaker, as well as a comedian, known for weav-

ing life lessons into his programs and sharing what he has learned through tragic deaths, his wife’s recovery from cancer, his dad’s many years in a wheelchair, and other experiences. Douglas has previously performed in the New Holland area and at Life Awakening events. “We have had him two other times, and people really loved him, so we decided to bring him back,” said Life Awakening executive director Linda Ingham. In addition to the wit of Douglas the event will feature, Ingham talking about the Life Awakening Academy (LA Academy), a new training program that will premiere in January 2022 in order to teach people to use the Gospel Process. “God started downloading the Gospel Process to me (in 2007),” recalled Ingham. “The Gospel Process is a way to take people into freedom, healing, and victory beyond salvation and into abundant life.” Ingham began writing books and manuals about the process and training others in how to use it. “I don’t think there’s a wound or a place of sin where the Gospel cannot reach,” said Ingham, who recently completed preparing the Gospel Process materials for use by the LA Academy. North Star from pg 1 online silent auction is open to the public, and those wishing to bid may do so by connecting to a link at https://northstarinitiative.org or by searching for “North Star Initiative” on Facebook. Among the many items that will be auctioned off are a vacation on Anna Maria Island, Fla.; a shooting range pass; a 24-hour rental of a 2021 Corvette; and a wine tour at Waltz Vineyards. Esbenshade said that the organization hopes to raise $150,000 from this year’s event and that the funds are necessary to help battle the expanding problem of human trafficking. “Through COVID, we saw an increase (in need),” Esbenshade shared, noting that The Harbor filled up over the last year or so. “The pandemic compounded existing vulnerabilities and opened the door for individuals to be exploited,” she explained, adding that the shutdown “created an ideal environment for human trafficking to evolve and flourish.” Esbenshade cited a number of situations where women and children may have been put into vulnerable positions due to COVID-19 restrictions. human trafficking survivor. “We share out of our experience (with victims),” reflected Esbenshade, “but when you hear it firsthand (from a survivor), it’s a different experience.” North Star Initiative has been fighting human trafficking in Lancaster for more than 10 years. More than three years ago, the organization began operating The Harbor, known as Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. This year’s fundraiser for North Star Initiative will be held at Warehouse 100, 100 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Friday, Oct. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. North Star did not hold the annual fundraiser in 2020 due to COVID19 restrictions, but this year a larger venue will allow for more attendees to stand at high-top tables enjoying tapas and mocktails if they so choose. Limited seating will also be available. A hybrid option will provide those who choose to attend virtually with a link and a delivery of tapas and mocktails to hold a watch party in their own home. Both a silent auction and a live auction will be part of the event. The live auction will feature auctioneer Tim Keller. The silent auction will open online on Friday, Oct. 8. The

Asked about her inspiration for holding an outdoor concert, St. John’s Center Lutheran Church director of music and organist Vickie Kissinger responded simply, “We love to sing.” A concert in the grove will be held at St. John’s Center Lutheran Church, 599 Reading Road, East Earl, on Sunday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. The concert will feature Pennsylvania State Senior Idol winner Kissinger and Dr. Jun Chon. AHAVA band from Mellingers Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schoeneck will also perform. The concert will feature traditional Christian music/hymns, gospel, and contemporary Christian music. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be held on Friday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. Kissinger is a mezzo-soprano and classically trained pianist and organist with a concentration in jazz piano studies. She studied under master voice teacher Thomas Houser. She holds a degree in music education from Millersville University. Chon, who is a tenor, is an avid vocalist, performing at weddings and events, and singing at local churches. Chon is a graduate of Tulane University. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Chon is known for improvement initiatives he has championed at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. “This is our third attempt to sing a concert since Nov. 2, 2013,” noted Kissinger. That first concert was a fundraiser for Relay For Life. A second concert was planned for Nov. 2, 2019, but it was canceled when Chon’s family had a pressing conflict. The concert was rescheduled for May 2020, but it was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Kissinger is director of music at Mellingers Evangelical Lutheran Church, Shoeneck, where she formed a praise band called AHAVA, which means “love” in Hebrew. “There’s a lot of musical talent there, so it’s working wonderfully,” said Kissinger. “We have all professional musicians in the band,” she added, pointing out that two of the members are also participants in

the well-known Craven Family Band. Calling the songs AHAVA will perform “new and fresh,” Kissinger said members are looking forward to performing a different genre of music. AHAVA members include Kissinger as director and on keyboard and vocals; the Rev. Tim Craven, church pastor, on guitar and vocals; Kim Craven on bass; Erin and John Biles providing vocals; and Jonathan

Miriam Remington, director of the LA Academy, will speak about turning the Gospel Process into a course that the organization eventually hopes to offer online. The Process has been divided into four phases that each build on each other. Phase one is the lifestyle seminar focused on breaking the damaging power of sin. Phase two begins teaching God’s design for life in union with Christ. Phase three pertains to God’s heart and plan for

Hogan on percussion. Those who are planning to attend are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating. Social distancing in accordance with current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocols will be practiced. A freewill offering will be received.
