Members of the Gap Town Clock Lions Club, including (from left) past treasurer Rob Chester, treasurer John Smoker, president Steven Wenrich and secretary Darla Stoner, invite prospective members to attend an ice cream social on Sept. 17.
BY ANN MEAD ASH
At the beginning, the problem was transportation. Rita Boer, practice manager for Community Services Group’s (CSG) Lancaster and Dauphin outpatient programs, said that transportation to mental health services in Lancaster was identified as an issue in Paradise prior to 2016 and in New Holland during the next few years. “Our main office is in Lancaster, and we were hearing how

Gap Town Clock Lions Club To Host Ice Cream Social The Gap Town Clock Lions Club, composed of individuals who live or work in the Gap and Pequea Valley communities, will present an ice cream social on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. at Integrous Fences and Decks, 32 Route 41, Gap. Individuals interested in joining the local club community service club are invited to attend the free event. While the club is predominantly made up of local businesspeople, it is open to all local residents. “(The ice cream social) is a mixer for anyone interested in joining the Lions Club,” said club present Steve Wenrich. “A lot of the members are businesspeople here in Gap. But, certainty, we don’t have (those) requirements to join. It’s not restricted to people in the business community; that is the group that we have right now.” The event will be held outdoors,
and the ice cream will be provided by Penny’s Ice Cream Truck from Lancaster. “(Integrous has) a deck on the side of their commercial building, which has an upper and lower level, so there is a lot of space,” said Wenrich. “We want to be cognizant of social distancing.” Wenrich will speak briefly about the club and its activities at the event, and applications will be available for those interested in pursuing membership in the club. “Club members pay an annual fee and there is also a new member application fee, but (this fee) is waived this year because of COVID,” Wenrich noted. “It’s a really good time to join.” The Gap Town Clock Lions Club is a relatively new club, having formed in 2018. There was a Lions Club in Gap many years ago, but the club was revitalized and renamed as a way of drawing attention to the Gap Town Clock, a local attraction. So far, the club, which has about

20 members, has held a chicken barbecue, as well as a Christmas bazaar at Gap Fire Hall. Some of the proceeds benefited the Career Occupation Relevant Education (C.O.R.E.) program in the Pequea Valley School District, which provides students with hands-on learning opportunities, teaches them trades and promotes craftsmanship. “A lot of the money raised goes toward the C.O.R.E. program, which is a career path for people who are not looking to go through college,” Wenrich explained. “We have partnered to raise funds for them.” The Gap Town Clock Lions Club meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7 a.m. at Integrous. “We did Zoom meetings for a few months - April, May and June,” Wenrich pointed out. “For July, August and September, we have met in person. Typically, we’ll have coffee and we meet in the large upstairs conference room.” The
Sarah Yohe, development director with Girls on the Run (GOTR), has an analogy concerning the different types and levels of anxiety people are feeling in relation to the pandemic. “We are all in the same storm, but we all have our own individual boats with their own holes in them that we are trying to keep plugged to stay afloat,” she said.

(transportation) was a barrier for people who don’t live in the city … and some were not comfortable coming into the city because they were more familiar with their own communities,” explained Boer. “We were hearing that was a barrier … and that there was a high demand and high need for mental health services, so we said, ‘Let’s do what we can to bring services into these communities.’” In Paradise, the Together Initiative Network (TIN) had identified the need for mental health services to be provided in the area. “TIN looks at whole community, and that group saw a need for mental health services,” said Boer, who noted that office space was available for a counselor to meet with patients in the Together Community Center (TCC). S TAY S A F E So our community can stay open. It’s good to be open. But to stay open, we need to stop the spread of COVID-19. We can do that with three simple steps: • Wear a mask in public
• Wash your hands often
• Maintain social distance — 6 feet
These methods have been shown to work. So let’s keep at it. Thank you for doing your part.

To address that anxiety and provide a service to Lancaster-area GOTR members, the organization is providing a free link to the film “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety” Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 8 to 10. The initial live event will begin at 7 p.m. on Oct. 8. “The GOTR team will open up the evening by sharing our mission and our reasons for hosting this event,” said Yohe. Following the opener, the 56-minute documentary will be shown, and then a live, half-hour discussion with approximately four panel members from related fields, such as psychology and pediatrics, will be held. Audience members will be able to submit questions to the panel. During the next two days, GOTR members and their families will have the option to watch the entire event via the link. The documentary, which was produced by IndieFlix, utilizes interviews with children and teenagers to explore the facets of anxiety and how it impacts relationships, along with offering possible solutions. Olympic athlete Michael Phelps is interviewed, as are mental health experts. “‘Angst’ opens up the conversation about anxiety,” said Yohe, who added that the

film fits with the curriculum of the weekly GOTR team meetings. “We provide a really safe space for our girls to sit and talk about their emotions and name their emotions,” she said. “When we saw this documentary, we realized that this is a (way to) engage our community in a conversation that is so important to have right now.” “The film (seeks to) normalize the conversation (about anxiety),” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “It makes it feel that it’s OK to talk about this because everyone experiences it.” Johnson noted that with teams meeting in a variety of ways this fall, including virtually and in environments where it is safer to socially distance, the organization wanted to do more. “We feel such a sense of responsibility to the hundreds of girls we

This is not the first time GOTR has offered a film on a culturally significant topic with a panel discussion to its members and families. Jocelyn Engle It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. EPC has not been immune to the tough decisions that we’ve all had to make during this pandemic. With our highest priority being to maintain the best local news coverage, we have made some changes that you will begin to see starting this week. To that end, this community paper will be distributed to your household every two weeks, encompassing the entire coverage area. While you will not receive the printed edition each week, we invite you to visit us online at townlively.com/read and sign up for our weekly email newsletters for fresh content EVERY WEEK. This won’t be for long. We anticipate this as a temporary measure as we navigate the next few months. As we move forward, every effort will be made to continue to supply you with your community’s news and advertising messages. It is absolutely paramount that we support our local businesses by shopping locally, eating locally, and utilizing our local service industries. Additionally, our nonprofit organizations play a pivotal role in filling the needs within our communities. Let’s continue to live out what is at the heart of com-

Counseling from pg 1 students were waiting up to six months to receive services. Leanna Hassler, who received her master’s degree in clinical counseling from Alvernia University, was the first CSG employee to provide mental health services at TCC. Hassler, who has worked with children and families using ecosystemic structural family therapy, worked closely with the advocates at The Factory Ministries, which is located at TCC, to connect with patients. In 2018, Hassler brought those same services to CrossNet, but she was soon joined in working outpatient settings by a second therapist. “We needed part of our clinicians time to be in the main office to help keep them connected to what we were doing in the larger clinic,” said Boer, who noted that about six months ago Angela Keller was brought in to provide services at CrossNet. Keller has a master’s degree in social work from Millersville University, and she has worked in the mental health field since 2003. She utilizes a person-centered therapeutic approach. Prior to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hassler was visiting TCC each Monday and Tuesday to provide outpatient therapy by appointment. Hassler was also working at CrossNet, but eventually Keller took over visiting New Holland one day per week, and she was quickly filling appointments. “Both (counselors) work with people across the age range from children through adults,” said Boer. When the state was closed by COVID19 restrictions in March, Boer reported that CSG quickly shifted most of its services to telehealth. “We began to meet … via video conferencing and phone appointments,” she said, noting that state regulations were changed to allow for these opportunities. “It was a big shift to implement, but it was something that our staff felt good about because they could safely meet with people,” said Boer, who noted that most clients said that they felt safer as well. “The move to telehealth allowed more flexibility in scheduling people (that the counselors had) met in community centers,” said Boer. The global pandemic impacted mental health, with CSG seeing an influx in need for services overall. Both counselors have continued to provide virtual appointments, which Boer said has gone well. State authorization for such visits has been extended until the end of 2020. Readers in Paradise may contact The Factory Ministries at 717-687-9594 about services. In New Holland, residents may call CrossNet at 717-355-2454. Individuals in either Paradise or New Holland may also call CSG directly at 877-907-7970 for more information about services. Boer mentioned that in the future when telemedicine is less prevalent, callers should mention if they want TCC or CrossNet when they call.

Area Moms in Prayer International coordinators are (from left) Lynn Herr and Mary Beth Will, with regional coordinator Sue Forry (right). Moms in Prayer groups meet all over the county to cover school children in prayer.
R062847
If the words “moms in prayer” calls forth a picture of mothers of school-age children meeting in a church on a weekday morning with Bibles in hand … well, one of the many Moms in Prayer groups in the area might fit that model, but it would be only a small portion of the reality. “We don’t fit inside a box,” said Sue Forry, regional coordinator for Lancaster, Lebanon, & Berks Counties Moms in Prayer International. Forry went on to note that groups are not necessarily church based. “We have groups for preschool moms, for mothers of children with special needs, and we have college and career groups,” said Forry. As schools begin to open up again - in a variety of formats, including public, private, cyber, homeschool, and hybrid models Moms in Prayer groups are finding creative ways to meet - virtually or together with masks and social distancing or in Forry’s favorite format, porch praying. “We do social distancing on a
porch, and we gather and pray,” explained Forry. “We are just about prayer,” she added. “Our vision is to see every school in the world covered in prayer.” Forry explained that meetings are one hour long and follow a schedule. “We start on time, and we end on time,” said Forry, who noted that a designated format helps keep groups on task. “We call it the four steps of prayer,” she explained. “It begins with praising God for who He is.” Forry said that time is followed by silent confession and then a time of giving thanks to God for what He has done. Lastly, there is a time for intercession, where moms pick one child of their own to pray for, but the group also prays for teachers, school concerns, and the Moms in Prayer ministry. “I told my ladies last week that perhaps the most important part is at the very end when the prayer sheet says to remember that what is prayed in the group stays in the group,” shared Forry. “We absolutely stress confidentiality.”
