This is the second year for the event, which will begin with registration at 4:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to enjoy a free meal of ham and cheese sandwiches served warm, as well as chips, cookies, candy and beverages, which will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. There will also be a food truck and sale of water ice. JT Holderman said of last year’s event. Animals were another popular attraction last year. This year, there will be sheep and possibly goats for children to see up close. New this year will be a fun attraction for adults. “For the adults, we’ll have an inflatable that has three lanes,” explained Holderman. “You put a bungee on your back, and you run down to see how far you can get, and you compete to see who can go the farthest.” About 500 people attended the first edition of the Community Fall Festival. “It went very, very well. We couldn’t have had a better turnout,” committee chair Mandy Doutrich said. The Community Fall Festival is designed to be an outreach event that will be fun for everyone while increasing awareness of Bellevue Presbyterian Church. “We want to make sure the community first of all knows that we’re See Fall Festival pg 10

National Day Of Prayer For Mental Health Service Slated By Ann Mead Ash
By Ann Mead Ash
This is only Gwen Didden’s second year helping to organize the Lancaster County National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, but as director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, Didden fully understands the significance of the event to those dealing with mental health issues. “The (prayer service) is important because it brings hope,” said Didden. “This (event) couples hope and prayer (to offer) spiritual guidance (that) is so important for people who are managing mental illness or living with people who are dealing with mental illness.” See Prayer Service pg 4
Gwen Didden (left) and Cathi Myers (right) are two of the organizers of the National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding service that will be held at Calvary Church on Oct. 11. No Longer Alone Ministries and Faith Friendship Ministries are sponsoring the event with assistance from Handi-Vangelism Ministries.
Strongman and motivational speaker Jon Pritikin opens his presentations with pop music that fills an auditorium with excitement. He rolls real frying pans into shapes that resemble a Teflon burrito, and he bends metal parts into U shapes while holding them in his teeth. The entire Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) and Pequea Valley Intermediate School student body roared w h e n h e p e r fo r m e d a t P V H S o n Sept. 12. But when Pritikin told the story of a child who was bullied because of his learning disabilities, the students’ reaction was serious and somber. See Speaker pg 10
Strongman and motivational speaker Jon Pritikin taught Pequea Valley students in seventh through twelfth grades about the importance of being kind to each other during an assembly held on Sept. 12. Pritikin’s visit was made possible by the National Character Education Foundation.

The longevity of the Farmers Day Association Fair, also known as the New Holland Fair, is based, at least in part, on tradition. This year, 3the agricultural tradition in one local family will be part of the activities as Madison Banbury of Danville, Ohio, serves as the judge for the sheep and goat competitions. Banbury is the granddaughter of Bob Herr, a retired agriculture educator, founder of Grassland FFA, and R.D. Herr Scholarship Goat sponsor. This year’s fair will be held from Wednesday, Oct. 3, through Saturday, Oct. 6, on Main Street, Roberts Avenue, Franklin Street, and Fulton Street. A new tradition for the event, which started last year with a free concert by local performer Sam Schmidthuber, will continue this year with a free concert by Kracker Beez, a classic rock band. The band will take part in the parade and then will return to the Franklin Street stage on Friday, Oct. 5, at
7 p.m. The fair will also feature a midway, exhibits in a range of categories, games, and a variety of food vendors. The fair will kick off on Thursday, Oct. 4, with the parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. A number of marching bands are scheduled to participate in the parade’s Spectacle of Bands competition, which awards prizes in a number of categories. The 2017 Cup of Honor winner was from Downingtown. The winning band will stop at the judges’ stand to receive the award and then perform for spectators. At the heart of the fair are the goat, sheep, and swine competitions. When Bill Fisher stepped into the role of president of the Farmers Day Association earlier this year, he did so with plenty of experience in the animal competition. “I have been involved for 45 years working with the animals, and I am the longest continuous volunteer,” noted Fisher. For 2018, animals will be judged in the tents on Fulton Street. Swine will be judged by Levi Geyer on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 5:30 p.m. Goats

will be judged at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 4, and sheep will be judged the same day at 4 p.m. The competition is open to 4-H and FFA members from Lancaster County. Raising the animal must be a project the youth has undertaken by himself or herself. As in the past, a special Kids’ Day will be held on Oct. 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. The day will include face painting, balloons, illusions, and more for children. For more than 50 years, the Fireman’s Tug-of-War Contest was a popular event at the fair. Last year, the Weaverland Valley No. 1 team took first place.
This year, the tug-of-war will not be held, but the pedal power tractor pull for children in age groups from ages 3 to 10 will occur on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. each day at the Franklin Street competition area. On Oct. 6 beginning at 11 a.m., a cornhole tournament will be held in the same area. The double-elimination event will feature teams, and the four best teams will move on to the Lancaster County championship event in October. Cathi Myers, who has long provided leadership for the event, which will celebrate its 10th observance this year, echoed Didden’s comments. “We want to bring hope to people and help them find hope,” she said, noting that the theme of the 2018 service will be “When People With Mental Illness Don’t Want Help: Finding Hope.” “This topic is so relevant,” said Myers.

This year’s service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Sponsoring ministries include No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM) and Faith Friendship Ministries. Assisting with the event is Minds Renewed, which meets at Calvary Church and is a division of Handi-Vangelism Ministries in Ephrata. Members of the organizing committee include Myers and Didden, as well as Clara Ames, executive director of NLAM, and Vicki Bollman, a volunteer with Minds Renewed. A number of experienced speakers will give presentations at the event. Dr. Karla Campanella, a family doctor and a missionary who is now a psychiatrist in the Philhaven system, will speak on the topic “Involuntary Commitment or 302.” Campanella will delve
into what involuntary commitment involves, who can initiate it, and when to use it. “She will help people understand that process,” said Myers, who noted that Campanella has been well received as a past speaker. Dr. Susan Cabouli, a psychotherapist with more than 20 years of experience, will speak about practical tips for finding hope, including an explanation of the LEAP method developed by Dr. Xavier Amador. LEAP stands for Listen-Empathize-Agree-Partner, and the method is designed to help a caregiver gain the trust of a patient. LEAP involves empathizing without judgment. Loice Byler, founder of a ministry that helps those who struggle with anxiety and depression, especially women, will share her personal story of being a mental health consumer, including her acceptance and denial of treatment
in the past. “She has seen a difference in her life when she has accepted treatment,” said Myers. “We thought that would be a good viewpoint to share.” Myers added that Byler will also offer practical tips and words of hope. Each year, organizers choose theme verses for the observance. This year’s verses include Psalm 33:22, which reads, “May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” Another theme verse is Hebrews 10:23, which reads, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Myers reported that the service will include congregational prayer, reading of the Scripture, and time for small group prayer as requested. There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. Readers who have questions may call 717-390-4891 or 717-285-5596.

Share Your Wishes Coalition invites the community to a free event on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the third-floor conference room at the Suburban Outpatient Pavilion, 2100 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The coalition aims to be a supportive community where conversations about end-of-life decisions are discussed openly and honestly, without fear or avoidance, so that a person’s wishes and values are honored during the last stages of life. Advance care planning is a process that enables individuals to make plans about their future health care. Advance care plans provide direction to health care professionals, family, and other loved ones when people are not in a position to make or communicate their own health care choices. The free workshop will focus on what advanced care planning is, how to select a health care agent, how one can express his or her wishes, and how to share the plan. Attendees will also be able to reflect on their values and beliefs. Individuals are asked to preregister by calling 888-LGHINFO (888-544-4636).

Community members are invited to have a fun day while supporting Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone during the fourth annual Walk and Pull for Life on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Salisbury Township Community Park, also referred to as Gap Park, 777 W hite Horse Road, Gap. The event, which will also feature a Kidz Zone, will be held rain or shine. At the event, participants may walk a route around the park or pull in a tug-of-war competition. People may raise money as individuals or teams by getting sponsors. “The purpose of our Walk and Pull for Life is not only a fundraiser, it is a time to take a stand for life,” said Cornerstone executive director Debbie Davenport. “Whether you are walking or pulling at this event, you show your support for life in a familyoriented, fun way.” The walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will make roughly three laps on the walking trail at the park. The Pull for Life tug-ofwar competition will follow the walk, with teams of five matching their strength against each other for the honor of taking home the grand prize trophy. “They pull for dear life. It is a lot of fun (and) it takes a lot of strength, so we are looking for strong men (and women) from the community, from churches and businesses - people who just want to come with a team of five and show their strength and pull for life,” development assistant Mary Wilson said. “ Whoever the team is who wins, they get this enormous trophy they can keep for one year. Their name plate gets put on it,” Davenport added. Pulling teams may represent a business, a church group or other organization, or they may be teams of friends or families. Pull teams will be asked to pay a registration fee; walkers can walk for free but are encouraged to get individual sponsorships. As an incentive, individuals and teams that reach fundraising

goals will have a chance to win gift cards. Music will be ongoing all morning, and there will be a chance to purchase T-shirts at the registration for the walk. Starting at 10:30 a.m., children will be able to enjoy the Kidz Zone, which will include barrel train rides, face painting and balloon sculptor Mr. Pops. “He sculpts all kinds of balloons into animal sculptures. He’s also a great storyteller,” Wilson said. “Everything that we are offering for the families that day is 100 percent free. This is a fun-filled family day, and the Gap Park is a wonderful place to come out for the day.” Walking and pulling can build up an appetite, which can be easily satisfied with a chicken barbecue lunch that day. Half-chickens will be available from 10:30 a.m. to noon only. Chicken will be available on its own or as a meal with a roll and butter, chips, a beverage, applesauce and a cookie. Proceeds from the day will support Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, a nonprofit ministry that offers pregnancy testing, limited ultrasound to confirm a viable pregnancy, decisionmaking counseling, prenatal and childbirth education classes, parenting classes and healthy lifestyle education classes. The organization also has certified trainers who make sexual risk avoidance education programs available to schools and youth groups on request. “ We obviously minister to women, but also to men and to families,” board member Jim Davis said. One of the newest additions to Cornerstone programming is a dating violence program. “Young girls and young boys are getting caught up in dating violence and not recognizing the danger signs, so we want parents and teens to be equipped,” Davenport said. For more information and to register, readers may call Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone at 717442-8694, visit www.pregnancy resources.org or search for “Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone” on Facebook and choose “Events.”

“Paths to Prosperity: A Story of Two Generations has been set as the theme for the third annual gala to benefit Mom’s House of Lancaster. The event will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, at Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. The doors will open at 5 p.m., at which time attendees may purchase beverages and place bids in a silent auction. The plated dinner will be served at 6 p.m. A social hour will be held following the meal along with a program that will include a live auction and several speakers. Lori Burkholder will act as master of ceremonies. The auctions will feature jewelry, getaways, fine dining, spa experiences, sports memorabilia, and entertainment. There will also be an opportunity to win a stay in a Lancaster County bed-and-breakfast. Mom’s House executive director Sara Johns and gala committee member Carole Kirchner related that the client speakers are slated to be an adult who attended Mom’s House as a child, a mother who graduated from the program, and a father who has participated in the program as well. “We give (parents) a chance to break the cycle of poverty through education and child care, Johns explained. “They offer support to the moms
and dads to get their educations, Kirchner added. The mission of Mom’s House of Lancaster, located at 415 S. Queen St., Lancaster, is to break the cycle of poverty by helping single parents reach their educational goals. Parents may be pursuing their GED or a master’s degree or anything in between, but all participants have access to parenting and life skills classes, tutoring, a food bank, a children’s clothing closet, a scholarship program, counseling, referral services, and encouragement and support. A major part of the Mom’s House program is the free state-accredited Keystone Star 3 early learning center for children age 6 weeks through preschool age whose parents are Mom’s House participants. “All of our kids leave our program kindergarten ready, or they are set up with an Individualized Education Program, Johns said, noting that a variety of therapists provide services to children at Mom’s House as needed. Currently, 20 children and 14 parents are active Mom’s House clients. At least a dozen families are on the waiting list. The program, which has been in existence for 28 years, has recently mushroomed. “We have tripled in terms of staff and doubled in terms of children in the last two years, said gala committee chair Dan Massey.

Individual contributions are the primary source of funding Mom’s House, Johns said, and the gala provides additional support. “Community awareness (of the existence and purpose of Mom’s House) is still a big portion of why we do the gala, Massey commented. “In the first two years, it was mostly about awareness while raising some funds. Now it’s 50-50. “(The gala) is a fantastic evening to see what donations have done, Johns said. “Whether you’re sitting at a table with a current mom or listening to a former child speak, it’s inspiring to hear how we’re changing the future. Friday, Oct. 5, has been set as the deadline to buy tickets for the gala, and they may be purchased by calling Mom’s House at 717-3969130 or visiting www.momshouse lancaster.org. Readers are invited to sponsor tables or buy tickets for current clients. Donations of auction items and financial contributions will be accepted as well.

smiling on the outside but dying on the inside,” he said. “Your tough times will get better.” He added that making mistakes and failing at some tasks does not make a person a mistake or a failure. “You need to know how special you are,” he said. “You are not an accident, and you are not a mistake.” Recounting the story of one high school teacher who took the time to help him succeed, Pritikin said, “Sometimes all we need is someone to just be nice to us.” He charged the students, especially the seniors, not to let any student eat lunch alone. “We are going to be heroes,” he said. “We will be careful how we talk to each other.” As the assembly concluded, many students came forward to talk to Pritikin, and he welcomed them. PVHS principal Arlen Mummau took the microphone and echoed Pritikin’s message to the students, saying, “Let’s pick people up instead of putting them down.” Readers who would like to know more about the National Character Education Foundation, which helped make Pritikin’s visit to the school possible, may visit www.ncef.net.

It’s a way for us to love on the community in which God has placed us.” To let people know more about the many things the church has to offer, attendees will be given an information packet when they register for the evening. “We will be giving information on our church, who we are, (and) ministry opportunities that we have to share with the love of Jesus Christ,” Holderman said. Pritikin’s visit to the school to present an anti-bullying assembly was prompted by an email from the National Character Education Foundation received by Pequea Valley School District superintendent Erik Orndorff. The National Character Education Foundation works in partnership with Pennsylvania Rep. Bryan Cutler’s office. Pritikin is one of the most popular antibullying program presenters in the country. He holds Guinness Book records for a few of his feats of strength, and more than 8 million students worldwide have heard his message. The story Pritikin told that quieted the auditorium full of energetic young people began when the boy was only 6 years old and placed in a classroom for students with special needs. As the boy grew, he often ate lunch alone. His parents divorced. He was bullied mercilessly by both students his own age and older boys who caused him physical injury. One teacher in particular discouraged him by telling him
he would never become literate. Pritikin noted that the boy kept a brave face in front of others, waiting until he was alone to cry. “Just because someone doesn’t cry in front of you doesn’t mean a (joke) hasn’t crossed the line and hurt that person,” Pritikin told the students. When the boy was finishing high school, he wanted to go to college. He was rejected everywhere he applied until one school accepted him on probation. The second year at college, he made the dean’s list, and he later earned his degree. “Today, that man is me,” Pritikin told the students. “My whole life, I have been judged, and I know what it’s like to be in a big room of people and feel like you don’t fit in. I am somebody nobody wanted to play with.” Pritikin noted that although he has had throat surgery and speech therapy, he still stutters sometimes, and he still has problems with reading and writing. Pritikin took time during his presentation to encourage students in the audience who could identify with what he had experienced. “I know some of you are

Henshaw Nothces Game-Winner Against Blazers by Ara Grigorian
The Pequea Valley girls’ soccer team played through two low-scoring Lancaster-Lebanon League matches before facing Octorara in a Saturday afternoon game. Sophomore Baleigh Henshaw’s goal in the 34th minute of the match was all the offense Pequea needed in a 1-0 defeat of league rival Lancaster Mennonite on Wednesday. The match was played a day late after rain caused the postponement of the game at Kinzers. Henshaw scored off an Alyssa Yoder assist. It was one of only six shots on goal by the Braves. On the Pequea side of the pitch, meanwhile, Kristen Jarvis made certain that the low-scoring was enough scoring. She made 10 saves to preserve the shutout. Pequea improved to 3-2-0 in the LL League and 4-2-1 overall. Also on Wednesday, Lancaster Catholic was busy pouring in nine goals in a 9-0 defeat of McCaskey. The following day, that same offense was able to score only once against Jarvis and the PV offense. However, the Crusaders limited the Braves to only two shots on goal in a 1-0 victory in Lancaster. Camille Zapata scored 18 minutes into the second

half off a Hannah Schmidt assist. Jarvis saved the other four shots launched in her direction. Jarvis recorded six more saves in the 1-0 defeat of Octorara on Saturday afternoon. Megan Yoder’s goal in the 27th minute came off an Alyssa Yoder assist, giving PV a 1-0 lead, which stood for the final margin. FOOTBALL The Braves and the Braves battled it out on the gridiron in what has become known as the annual Brave
Bowl. In this year’s showdown, which was held at Kinzers, the Octorara Braves topped the Pequea Valley Braves 19-6. What made this different this year was that for the first time it was played as a league game. Octorara held off a Pequea drive in the waning seconds of the first half and headed into the locker room leading 7-0. Dalton Temple capped a successful drive with a four-yard rushing
touchdown in the third quarter, pulling Pequea Valley to within a point, 7-6. The visiting Braves, however, went on to put up 12 more points in that stanza while the defenses fought the rest of the way in a 19-6 Octorara victory. The win improved Octorara’s record to 2-3 (2-2 in league) while Pequea Valley fell to 0-5, 0-4. Head coach Mike Choi commented on how pleased he was with his defensive unit. “I saw a lot of improvements,” he said. “We had to implement a sophisticated game plan to stop their offense. “They do three things off the jet series or they’ll fake the jet,” continued the coach. “Either someone goes in motion to the wide side of the field and they’ll have the inside receiver go in jet motion with the quarterback and either hand it off to him, sweep to the outside, or pull the linemen to give the quarterback to run it inside the tackle. “He’s reading the defensive linemen and if there’s a hole there, he’ll run it through,” Choi explained. “You have to be consistent in defending the quarterback and the run. They can also fake the sweep and step back and throw to one of their receivers.” Given the youth and relative

inexperience of this young PV squad, it was a phenomenal display of disciplined defense on the gridiron. It did not go unnoticed by the opposing sideline. “Their coach Jed King shook my hand after the game and told me our defense played a fantastic game,” Choi added. “It’s really nice when the other team’s coach comes over and compliments your defense.” As for the low-scoring affair, the Octorara side scored on a defensive touchdown in the first quarter before the aforementioned drive by PV ended inside the red zone. That Pequea Valley drive ended at the Octorara two-yard line when quarterback John Smith’s dash was stopped short of the goal line as the halftime whistle sounded. “We drove the ball well from 20 to Photo by Bob Devonshire Photo by Bob Devonshire 20,” Choi commented, referring to the Pequea Valley’s Emily Diller gets a kick away in front of the Blaz- The Braves’ Diamy Cruz battles Lancaster Mennonite’s Jenna ers’ Lauren Rossi during the Braves’ 1-0 Section Four victory last Groff for the ball during Pequea Valley’s 1-0 Section Four win in yard markers on the field. “We did it efficiently. tightened up the defense and we made mistakes. “On that play, at about the fouryard line, John could have either put his shoulder down and tried to get into the end zone or try to get out of bounds, which could have given us two seconds for a field goal on fourth down. It would have been nice to get the field goal and when we scored first in the second half, we would have been up 9-7. But they tackled him at the two-yard line.” Pequea Valley earned 145 yards of rushing offense shared between Temple, Dylan Jackson and Brandon Hershey. “They’re the three-headed monster for our rushing game,” Choi said. “Dylan had another big run called back on a penalty. Dalton was fantastic, using his ability to find open holes in the field. He also had a nice interception in the end zone and had a catch on a third-and-long, setting us up inside the 20.”

Ty Stoltzfus, left, and Austin DeForest turned in rounds of 93 and 95, respectively, to place ninth and tenth in the individual scoring and help the Braves to a first-place finish in last Tuesday’s Section Four match at Crossgates.
Following Temple’s touchdown, the visiting Braves went up 13-6 on quarterback Nick Mattingly’s 68-yard dash to the end zone. Mattingly later connected with Jansen Schempp on a 45-yard touchdown pass. Hershey ran for 59 yards on 17 carries. Jackson had 28 yards on eight rushes while Temple was handed the ball eight times for 46 yards of real estate. He also had five receptions for 30 yards. “Two of their jet series plays resulted in touchdowns,” Choi said. “We missed a couple of tackles on one play as their quarterback did a fantastic job breaking some tackles. “We had a breakdown in the secondary and it might have been fatigue in the second half,” Choi added, referring to the pass to Schempp. Octorara improved to 6-3 in the Brave Bowl history. Pequea Valley’s next game will be at Northern Lebanon as both teams will be going for their first win of the season. FIELD HOCKEY The stellar goal tending of Jordan Melson was just what this Pequea Valley field hockey team needed in Friday’s road game at Section Three rival Lebanon. Melson faced 16 shots on goal and finished the day with 15 saves a in a close 1-0 loss to the Cedars.
The Cedars kept the Braves out of the crease and denied the Pequea offense. The only goal came at the 20:22 mark of the first half - off the stick of Giahny Correa, who took an assist from Kayla Rohner. Pequea Valley fell to 0-7-0 on the year (0-6-0 in league). The Braves were coming off a 6-0 loss to Lancaster Catholic. BOYS’ SOCCER In its quest to claim a league playoff berth, the boys’ soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Lancaster Catholic on Thursday and defeated Octorara 2-1 on the road Saturday. The Braves’ record improved to 71-2 (4-1-1 league). Nehemiah Glick was solid in goal for both games, recording four saves in Thursday’s draw and three more in PV’s victory. Josh Heinrich came through with the equalizer against Catholic, scoring 28 minutes into the second half. Chris Richards had given the Crusaders the 1-0 lead just before halftime. Despite 10 shots on goal, the Braves were able to only get Heinrich’s shot past Crusaders keeper Ben Ryan. PV needed extra time to top Octorara on Saturday afternoon. In the defensive battle, T.J. Hershey put PV up 1-0 at the midway point of the first half. Octorara tied it in the second half
and with only three minutes gone in the first overtime, Winston Thomas scored the game-winning goal. Josh Gingrich provided an assist. GOLF Pequea Valley finished a close third to Lancaster Country Day in a Section Four golf match at Crossgates on
Tuesday afternoon. The Lancaster Mennonite team finished first with 322 team points while LCD took second (373). The Braves were only three strokes behind the Cougars at 376. Josiah Nissley was sixth overall with a score of 82. LCD’s Nickolas Hooper was the top golfer of the day with 75. Taking ninth and 10th were Tyrell Stoltzfus and Austin DeForest with respective scores of 93 and 95. Parker Allain gave PV another spot in the top-15 with a score of 106. With this match in the books, Pequea’s record goes to 16-9 on the year. Lancaster Mennonite improved to 25-0 while LCD improved to 19-6. TENNIS Following a 5-2 defeat of L-L League foe Elco on Tuesday, the Pequea Valley girls’ tennis team continued its busy week by beating Linden Hall at home in a non-league match the following afternoon. The team played two more league matches before closing out the week all victories. The successful run improved PV’s record to 11-1 overall (4-1 in league). The Elco match featured a sweep in the doubles competition, including 80 victories by Adalie Clemmer and Kristin Huenink at number one doubles as well as Hope Fisher and Ryleigh Kurtz at number three doubles. At number two doubles it was Sophia Weaver teaming up with Naomi Feister for an 8-4 victory.

Feister and Clemmer also won their singles matches with Clemmer doing so in 6-4, 6-0 straight sets and Feister bouncing back from a 6-2 setback at the second set to win the tiebreaker 10-3. Following the 4-1 win over Linden Hall, the Braves visited AnnvilleCleona for a section match on Thursday. They blanked the Dutchmen 7-0, including straight set victories by Weaver (6-0, 6-0), Kurtz (6-2, 6-0) and Huenink (6-0, 6-0) in the first three singles matches. Caroline Bragg grabbed a 6-4 opening set win at number four singles. After a 6-1 setback, she battled to a 12-10
tiebreaker triumph. In doubles it was Weaver and Feister winning 8-0 while the duo of Fisher and Kurtz posted the same winning margin of 8-1 as the twosome of Clemmer and Jessica Hurst. There was more dominance on Friday as the Section Three match was played on Pequea’s home court. The Silent Samaritan Luncheon is a fundraiser for the Silent Samaritan Fund, which provides counseling and other services to women who do not have adequate funds to cover the cost, and the Silent Samaritan Endowment, a permanent fund started in 2015 in the names of Silent Samaritan Fund founders Linda Peacock and Alta Landis. The 2018 luncheon will be held at a new location, Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The luncheon has also been scheduled earlier in the month of November than in the past. This year’s event will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, beginning at 11 a.m., and will feature two local women, Manheim Township High School graduate Abby Stewart and her mother, Carol Reichler. The luncheon is open only to women. Stewart and Reichler’s message is titled “The Power of Individuality and Unconditional Love.” The program will focus on the struggles Stewart encountered as a teenager and how she and her mother persevered together. The Silent Samaritan Fund has given more than $1 million to aid area women. According to Gerald Ressler, Samaritan Counseling Center executive director, “The impact of the Silent Samaritans, in offering financial assistance, has been enormous.” The fund can be utilized in a variety of ways, including to provide counseling support for women who do not have insurance and to fund counseling center programs. Women wishing to attend the luncheon are asked to make a donation of a designated amount to the fund. Those wishing to attend are asked to register by Wednesday, Oct. 31. Readers who would like to attend may call 717-560-9969. More information may be found at www.scclanc.org/event/silent -samaritans.
