Founder Jenn Knepper is excited about holding a live Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) fair this year. The fair will feature about 30 nonprofit organizations, including more than a dozen marketplace vendors with fair trade items, and several food trucks. Knepper has noticed a buying trend toward locally made items and concern for a greater cause. “People are being more intentional about shopping,” she said. “There’s something for everyone at this fair.”

The motto of Lifecycles is “Do hard things,” and for 60 days this summer, a team of bicyclists did just that. Eight boys and three adults rode 3,700 miles, from Sunset Beach, Ore., to Cape Henlopen, Del., as part of the Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride. The ride is a project of Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling. “It was quite an adventure,” said Mike Wise, one of the adults who participated in the cross-country ride that began June 10 and ended on Aug. 8. “When I first heard it was going to be 60 days, I thought, ‘I can do 60 days, no problem.’
The Lifecycles team reaches the finish line in Delaware.
I had no idea how long 60 days would really be.” The group took a northern route across the United States. “The first five to seven days were rainy,” Wise recalled, of the

group’s journey through Oregon and Washington. They biked through thunderstorms, torrential downpours and unseasonably cold, wet weather. But they never gave up, Wise said, and they also encountered unforgettable sights along the route. “A big highlight was Yellowstone National Park,” he said. “We rode through Beartooth Highway. … We rode 27 miles uphill. It was a crystal-clear day, and you could see for miles. It was just beautiful.” The participants had concerns ahead of time that they’d all make it up the incline - and then concerns about coming down through hairpin turns and steep drop-offs. Despite the challenges, the riders experienced no major health concerns or problems - only some muscle aches, blisters and irritated asthma. Joining Wise on the trip were youth team members Zach Greineder, Liam Howell,
Micah Lapp, Micah Clark, Monny Smith, Zander Malanchuk, AJ Vega and Jaerrid Strawser, along with adults Al Vega and Michelle Deller. Each day of the trip kicked off with a text of encouragement and Scripture from Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer, followed by a ride to the evening’s stop. “We’d go out to dinner at night, and that’s when we could really bond, since we couldn’t talk to each other much during the rides,” said Wise, a retired art teacher from Manheim who joined Lifecycles four years ago. The trip brought out the best and the worst in everybody, Wise stated, adding, “ We all had our moments when we were struggling in different ways, either physically or emotionally, but the boys all did great. They represented Lifecycles and the Lord well.” See Lifecycles pg 3

Lifecycles from pg 2 At 63, Wise said he isn’t sure he’s up for another crosscountry bike ride, but he knows the memories from this one will last for years. “One of the boys, after the trip was over, came up to me and said, ‘Can you help me with my devotions? I like doing them,
and I feel so much better when I do them, and I don’t want that to end,’” Wise remarked. “That made me realize what a lasting impact this trip is going to have on these boys.” For more information on Lifecycles, visit www.life cyclesteam.org.

Tax refunds give these families a springboard for the future by putting their hard-earned money back into their hands. It's a simple way to help in your community. Want to volunteer with VITA? We need volunteers like you! Contact smethers@uwlanc.org for more details and to sign up for an Informational Session in September or October.
“Volunteering with VITA is a great way to help people save money and not be worried about the process.” -Lenny, VITA Volunteer
WHY VOLUNTEER WITH VITA?
1. MAKE AN IMPACT
VITA volunteers directly affect the community in tangible ways. Clients saved over $3 million in tax preparation fees in 2020. As a volunteer tax preparer, you can help families get their tax refunds, which helps build financial stability.
2. FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE With day, evening, and weekend hours at more than 20 locations across the county, you have the opportunity to help as your schedule allows. Plus, tax season isn't year-round, so you get to enjoy your summers.

designed to support families in crisis by bridging gaps with emergency child care and other types of help. Bench Mark, a youth development and mentoring program, will be represented at the fair for the first time by founder and executive director Will Kiefer. “We will be talking about the opportunity to give through Bench Mark to our students,” explained Kiefer, who noted there will be opportunities to provide scholarships for mentoring time in the gym, career development services, academic services, and leadership training. Food trucks that will be present at the event include Walk-O Taco; Homage, which specializes in ethnic foods particularly from West Africa; and Character Coffee. Character Coffee partner Megan Foltz sells organic and fair trade products, and the truck uses Humankind Beverage products to make coffee. Humankind donates a portion of sales to clean water projects in developing countries. “We will have chai, Mexican hot chocolate, and espresso,” said Foltz. Knepper pointed out that since GTGH will be held on a Sunday this year, those who plan to attend might consider stopping for lunch and a little shopping after church. The fair focuses on nonprofits and other organizations that provide life-changing benefits to people. Luisa Tapia has been taking part in the event since 2019. Her business, My Peruvian Treasures, features fairly traded sustainable products made by women in Peru. “A portion of our sales goes to community programs,” explained Tapia. Also showcasing products at the fair this year will be Revolution Lancaster, a social enterprise with a mission to empower women who are experiencing homelessness or facing barriers. Dana Robertson is the board chair. “We recruit (women living in Lancaster), and they handcraft jewelry,” said Robertson, who noted the makers are paid a fair and living wage to help empower them financially. “We are not yet able to employ them full time, but we are able to give them supplemental income,” she explained, adding, “It’s about the supportive community.” Bethany Christian Services is known for adoption work, but Candace Reynolds will represent the organization’s Safe Families for Children program at GTGH. “We … believe everyone deserves to be loved, connected, and safe,” said Reynolds, who noted that Safe Families is

Lancaster Central Market is the oldest public farmers market in the country, and it’s located in the city of Lancaster at 23 N. Market St. Three days a week, more than 60 local vendors sell from their stands in the 1889 Market House. For over 20 years, Lancaster Central Market has hosted an annual Harvest Breakfast event. The breakfast was canceled last year due to the pandemic, but organizers recently announced that it will return. Harvest Breakfast will take place at Lancaster Central Market on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 8 a.m. to noon. It is an event suitable for people of all ages. There will be face painting and pumpkin painting, Tractor Jerry and the Mud Bucket will provide live music from 10 a.m. to noon, and fresh food will be available for purchase from 10 different market stands. “This is a free event with something for everyone,” said Tarrah Berrier, owner of the Turkey Lady stand at Lancaster Central Market. “It’s family friendly and gives people a chance to meet up with their market friends in a different way. You’re supporting locally owned small businesses and enjoying all of the fresh offerings this time of year brings to Lancaster County.” The Harvest Breakfast is a rain-or-shine event. Parking will be available on the street, in parking garages, or in private lots. Berrier will sell turkey sausage topped with melted cheese and grilled peppers and onion over an english muffin. Other vendors will sell scones, bacon, eggs, apple cider donuts, breakfast burritos, and more. Berrier mentioned that she is looking forward to everyone being together after not holding the event last year. “It’s a great vibe for the market community during an amazing time of year,” she said. For more information, search for “Central Market Lancaster” on Instagram or “The Lancaster Central Market” on Facebook. The 18-2 record earned Pequea Valley a section championship. It was a tight race at the top of the standings between Annville’s Reagan Flynn, who shot a 73, and Mennonite’s Ian Kennett (74). A pack of Pequea players finished third through fifth - Kyle Ebersol, Matt Lapp, and Cole Stoltzfus. They each shot a 76. Easton Herr finished with an 84. The Pequea Valley golf team swept its final Section Four match, 4-0, at Honeybrook on September 16 to clinch the overall 2021 Section Four championship. Members of the team are: front row (from left), Isaiah Slabaugh, Trenton Stoltzfus, Bo Smucker; and back row, Kyle Ebersol, Cole Stoltzfus, Matt Lapp, Dylan Stoltzfus, Easton Herr and Coach Clair Beiler.
The victory was Pequea’s first of the season. Early in the contest, Orlando Stoltzfus put Pequea on the board with a three-yard rushing TD followed by the PAT from Nevin Stoltzfus. Peyton Temple connected with Jonathan Carter on a 75-yard touchdown strike to give the Braves a 140 lead heading into the final period. Temple finished with 113 passing yards on six completions and no interceptions. Carter hauled in three passes for 96 yards, including the touchdown. He also ran for 30 yards while Orlando Stoltzfus (15 carries) led the Braves with 56 rushing yards. Dominic Wallace had 21 receiving yards on his two catches. BOYS’ SOCCER With two dominant victories, the boys’ soccer team improved to 6-1-1 on the year (4-0-0 league). The Braves were coming off a dominant 10-1 defeat of Lebanon on September 15, with Peyton Leitch notching a hat trick, followed by shutout wins against Lancaster Country Day and Annville-Cleona. “We moved Leitch to forward,” Pequea coach Peter Bennett said. “He figured it out and has hit the ground running of late. He has had a nice run of games for us.” On Friday, the Braves blanked Lancaster Country Day 5-0 with Dylan Ratjavong scoring two goals and providing an assist for a Joey Pereira goal in the 17th minute of the match. Nevin Stoltzfus was also busy scoring and assisting as he recorded one of each. Jackson Neff also added a goal while Sam Arena’s contribution was an assist for the Stoltzfus
goal 12 minutes into the second half. Against Lebanon, Leitch scored PV’s first goal, made it 5-0 three minutes into the second half and claimed the hat trick at the midway mark of the second half. Also scoring multiple times was Stoltzfus, with two goals three minutes apart in the first half. Ratjavong, Pereira. Neff, Wade Stoltzfus and Ethan Garber also scored in the 10-goal attack. Jazae Itegi recorded three saves in goal. Itegi claimed another shutout on Tuesday, September 21, as the Braves defeated Annville-Cleona 4-0. “Jazae has helped stabilize our backfield,” Bennett said. “He is very athletic and does a nice job of commanding the 18 box. He is quick to
come off the line on the breakaways. I think his aggressiveness can be intimidating, extending the goal mouth, and cutting off crosses.” The Braves went into the Annville game knowing they had to keep pace with Lancaster Catholic in a tight race in Section Four. “We wanted to emphasize a quick start - to put them on their heels,” Bennett explained. “Nevin Stoltzfus scored 1:12 into the game and so we achieved that objective.” Stoltzfus finished with two goals while Neff and Leitch also scored. As for the race with the Crusaders, both teams finished the day 4-0-0 in Section Four. “I’m proud of how hard the boys have been working,” Bennett said. “We lost two very close games to Catholic last year.”

WFCS from pg 11 Jackie Houck, who is event cochair along with Jen Woltman, said the auction is fast-paced and that WFCS students help out at the event. “It is a fun experience ... it gets exciting,” she said. “Some of the older (students) help show the items and deliver them to the winners.” Live auction items will include food, baked goods, themed classroom gift donation baskets, classroom projects created by the students, community donations and teacher experience donations.
“One of the most exciting times is the teacher gifts. All of our teachers donate something. It may be going to a 5K with one of the teachers or lunch with a teacher,” explained Houck. “(During a past auction), one of the teachers (provided) lunch once a week for a month for a student and a friend. These are personal one-on-one experiences or things that (the teachers) made. These are special and unique opportunities for the teachers to connect with their students. This builds relationships and helps raise money
for the school at the same time.” Also as part of the fundraiser, there will a chance for attendees to win items through a random drawing. There will also be one online auction item - a trip to Chincoteague, Va. “It will include the stay at a property on the water, as well as a boating trip and a gift certificate for dinner,” said Houck. “That will be online only.” Bids will open on Oct. 2 and will close at midnight on Sunday, Oct. 3. The goal of the weekend is to raise $30,000. “This keeps the tuition where it’s at and makes it affordable for families,” said Houck, noting that last year’s fundraiser
only included a virtual auction. “It’s a good opportunity for the community to get reconnected, which is one of the goals that we have since things were not in person last year.” WFCS is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. For more information or to register for the Falcon Fun Run, visit www.wfcs.org or www.facebook.com /westfallowfieldchristianschool or call the school office at 610-593-5011.
