Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood. Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013. In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.” Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a See Thrive And Grit pg 7

Those who donated any money or made a card got to wear their pajamas to school on a chosen day. Some students even brought in their own money from their allowances. Overall, students raised more than $873.
In early September, Hurricane Dorian impacted the Bahamas. In keeping with the Paradise Elementary School motto, “Respect for Self, Respect for Others, and Respect for the World Around Us,” facilitators and students decided to incorporate a reallife lesson about helping others in need. how important it was for her to be in the area. “These are my roots,” she said. Touching on Lancaster County’s connection to produce, she stated that only about 35% of food eaten in the U.S. today is fresh. “We live in a beautiful farmland here, and I hope that will springboard us back into eating fresh food,” she said, adding that cooking fresh foods at home can be economical. Noting that she believes anyone can cook and that good cooking should not take a long time, she told the audience, “I have learned … you already possess the two most powerful tools you can have in any kitchen. You have two hands, and you can make almost anything.” In less than an hour, Eliza shared four recipes, centering mostly on four economical ingredients - onions, peppers, chicken, and rice. She offered tips for creating broth, explained the best way to chop an onion, and discussed essential spices, one of which is garam masala, which she explained combines coriander, cumin, and cinnamon. Each dish had an international flair, with one being more Mediterranean and the others hailing from Asia, Mexico, and India. Eliza explained that her relationship with food was flavored by the Saturday night feasts her father, Larry, would create when she was growing up. “That shaped the way I looked at food,” she told her audience. “It resonated with me suddenly that food could be a language of love. That’s so powerful,” she stated. “I hope we can share that with this community and with families at home.” Eliza’s recipes may be found at www.pequeavalley.org and on her website at www.elizathechef.com.

Foundation Women in Culinary Leadership Award, which allowed her to move to Chicago, where she worked at a children’s culinary school, an Indian restaurant, and a Creole restaurant. Eliza launched her own catering company and an aquaponic gardening company before receiving an offer to become the executive chef at an Italian restaurant in San Francisco. Since then, she has returned to her love of teaching at a cooking school where she works with students age 24 months and up. Eliza had participated in theater at PVHS, and she was pursuing acting jobs when she was hit with the realization that she could devote her life to creating healthy and uncomplicated but delicious meals. “I liked to tinker (with cooking), but I wasn’t good at it,” Eliza recalled, noting, “but I believe in the power of food (because) I learned very young how cool food was.” While home in Lancaster County for a family wedding, Eliza had the opportunity to address learners in the Pequea Valley area in three separate presentations on Sept. 25. Two were held at PVHS during the school day for students to attend, and the third one was held at the school in the evening with dual sponsorship from PVHS and The Factory. About 30 adults and young people attended the evening session. The visiting chef was introduced to the group by PVHS vice principal Amy Koberstein, who noted that Eliza’s earlier presentations had been a delight. “Martin is working to get young hands inspired to get cooking and back in the kitchen,” said Koberstein. Eliza began her presentation by letting her audience know

you have a banquet … invite those who can’t pay you back,” noted Boycan. “That’s what we’re called to do. We’re not in it for people to recognize us or return the favor. We want to help folks that nobody else has believed in.” HOPE International, which was founded in 1998, is a Lancasterbased nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. “Investing in Dreams” is the theme of this year’s buffet-style breakfast, which will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 22, from 7 to 9 a.m. As it was last year, this year’s breakfast will be held on the same day as the Extraordinary Give, Lancaster County’s largest day of online giving. Peter Greer, president and CEO of HOPE, will speak on the topic of “Investing in Dreams.” Greer received a degree in international business from Messiah College. He also holds a master’s in political and economic development from the Harvard Kennedy School. He has worked internationally as a microfinance adviser. He is the author of several books, including “Mission Drift.” In addition to Greer’s talk, the breakfast will feature a panel dis-
cussion, a presentation Boycan noted that HOPE has wanted to hold for some time. “We will have a panel of three regional kingdom-minded entrepreneurs who will answer the question ‘ Who believed in you?’” explained Boycan. “Most successful business people didn’t get there by themselves.” The three entrepreneurs will be Andrew Samuel, founder, chairman, and CEO of LinkBank; David Millary, president of EDUPlus International Inc.; and Crystal Weaver, Lancaster-based entrepreneur and co-founder and COO of The Commons Co. and co-owner of Passenger Coffee Roasters, Prince Street Café, and Blue Line Lancaster. Boycan believes the panel discussion will exemplify HOPE’s mission. “That’s what those people (who believed in) the entrepreneurs (did for them),” he said. “They invested in them. That’s what we do. We reach out to people who are underserved and marginalized and vulnerable, and we believe in them.” HOPE provided $5,000 in loans in its first year of existence. HOPE had loaned out $161 million by 2008, and in the last 10 years, $1.36 billion has been loaned. HOPE now serves
965,000 clients in 16 countries. “I did the math,” noted Boycan. “If all of our clients stood handin-hand, it would take us from Lancaster to Jacksonville, Fla.” Further, Boycan noted, “If you laid $1.36 billion dollar bills endto-end, they would go around the world five times.” Boycan thinks those who attend the breakfast will have opportunities to learn from the experience. “We think it will be an inspiring morning,” he said. “All of us have the opportunity to believe in others where some may not see their potential. That’s what HOPE is about, and (at the breakfast), we hope to inspire people to believe in what we’re doing.” Boycan recalled that the 2018 breakfast was held on a morning when the area received a surprise snowfall of six inches. This year, he hopes for better weather and to see 300 or more people attend the event. Readers who would like to learn more about the breakfast may visit www.hopeinternational.org/lancasterbreakfast. There is no cost to attend the breakfast; however, reservations must be made by Friday, Nov. 15. Individuals may register by calling 717464-3220, ext. 554, or emailing Jbeachy@hopeinternational.org

Thrive And Grit from pg 1 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit. Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future.
Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn and other volunteers create and deliver uplifting boxes filled with gift cards for cleaning services and meal deliveries and other helpful items and goodies to assist women of all ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn. Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to. “She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn. “She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.” To learn more about supporting the mission of Thrive and Grit, readers may visit www.thriveandgrit.org.

mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy completed within the week. She was diagnosed with a pregnancy-related breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday. Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance. “She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.” Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in

to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” Myers explained that a special station will be available to bring added meaning to this verse. “We will have … a basin of water, and we will have disappearing paper,” she explained. “People can write words (associated with) things they have suffered, and when they put (the paper) in the water, they can watch the suffering dissolve, symbolizing how God can help us work through the trauma and suffering.” There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. A freewill offering will be received to defray expenses associated with the event. A portion of the offering will be designated for Faith and Friendship Ministries, which is the sponsor of the service. Readers who have questions may call 717-390-4891 or 717285-5596.

Stress Management Team. “The focus this year is on trauma and related disorders,” said Chakara. “We thought we would address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which has been in the national conversation with regard to veterans and its close cousin, acute stress disorder.” Chakara explained that he plans to discuss the weight of the issue and, based on current research, how the problems associated with stress disorders can be managed. “(This event is) an invitation to think about this with people of faith,” said Chakara. “(To explore) what … Scripture says about the aspects of suffering and trauma.” Wissler noted that the discussion will range beyond the coverage stress disorders in veterans have garnered to include first responders, police, and events that affect the larger community. Myers, who has been involved with the event since its inception, said that the prayer room and display area will be open prior to the service as well as after. “We have had the prayer room normally open just at the end of the (event),” she noted. “(This year), we will have it at the beginning as well as the end to give more opportunity for people to pray.” Some of the Scripture for this year’s event is from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which reads, “Praise be

(0-6 overall) while the visitors improved to 1-5 (1-4 league). The Braves’ offense rolled up 146 rushing yards and 299 overall yardage. The Vikings’ offensive threat on the night was quarterback Ethan Borcky, who completed 16 of 27 pass attempts for 328 yards and two touchdowns. Nate Leedy-Reidel caught five of Borcky’s passes for 162 yards and both TD’s. The Pequea linemen held the Vikings to only 39 net rushing yards. Antonio Lazar was difficult to stop. The junior tailback shifted his way past tacklers and gained a seasonhigh 139 yards on 14 carries. He was also on the receiving end of four pass completions by fellow junior Nate Fisher, who gained 110 yards through the air on six completions. Collin Rohrer caught an exciting 54-yard touchdown pass. Michael Beals caught a 43-yard pass from Colin Bailey. The Braves trailed 22-0 after the first period and 29-0 at the half. Leedy-Reidel caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Borcky and a 62-yard scoring pass as well in the opening stanza. In the fourth quarter, Fisher’s oneyard plunge cut the deficit to 29-6. Alex Folmer scored his second shortyardage touchdown of the game later in the period, giving N. Lebanon another seven points before Pequea got on the board again - Rohrer’s 54-yard reception and Fisher’s two-point run. GIRLS’ SOCCER Sometimes a game with 17 shots on goal does not result in a victory. That was the case in Pequea’s loss at Annville-Cleona on Monday, September 30. The Dutchmen posted a 2-1 overtime victory despite being out-shot 17-7. “It was one of those games where
they had only a few shots on goals and scored on two of them,” remarked head coach Steve Morris. “We had 17 or 18 shots on goal and scored once. “We probably controlled 95 percent of the second half,” added the coach. “We tied it in the second half and had an unfortunate thing happen where they yellow-carded our goalie because she collided with their attacker. They missed the free kick but won it in overtime.” Brooke Liney came in to replace starting goalie Madison Weaver, who left with five saves under her belt. Baleigh Henshaw scored the equalizer for PV in the 68th minute. Mackenzie Hernley scored the gamewinning goal 3:37 into overtime. “Brooke Liney is a freshman and she did a good job in a tough situation - going in there from jayvee and playing in overtime. It is a lot to go in there in that situation.” The Braves rebounded with an 8-0 defeat of Northern Lebanon, with Weaver making two saves for the shutout. The team improved to 8-5-1 (7-2-1 league). “I got everybody into the game, including my jayvee goalie,” Morris said. “It’s always nice to get kids into a game who wouldn’t normally play a varsity game. Plus, it was senior night, so some of the seniors who don’t get a lot of minutes, played in the game.” Half of the Braves’ goals came in a three-minute span. Megan Yoder scored the first of her two goals at the 25:03 mark. Kalyn Keen, who also had two goals, made it 2-0 at the 26:39

was excited. “Elena Esh is a regular varsity substitute,” Morris added. “I think this was her fifth or sixth varsity goal. She has done well for us up top.” The Section Four win kept the Braves tied with A-C for second place
in Section Four. Keen also notched two assists. Diller and Alison Hershey each had one assist. The Braves were 11th in the District Three Class-AA power rankings with
crucial L-L League games still on the slate. BOYS’ SOCCER Pequea Valley continued its dominance in Section Four, shutting out Annville-Cleona 4-0 on Monday, September 30. Elijah Elkins, Josh Gingerich and Johan Gomez-Mendez each had a goal and an assist. Josh Bailey
photo by Bob Devonshire also netted a goal as the Braves outshot the Dutchmen 12-5. Nehemiah Glick saved all five shots that came his way, helping extend Pequea’s winning streak to four
matches with three shutouts in that span. The Braves improved to 9-0-0 in league play and 12-2-0 overall. They went up to fifth in the District Three Class-AA rankings.

Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County will hold its annual Funding the Future Banquet on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. The theme will be “Rooted,” as the ministry aims to root children in Christ so they can overcome challenges in their lives. CEF of Lancaster Country has been sharing the love of Jesus with children in the public schools for 75 years. The event will feature special guest Marie Monville, former wife of the Amish schoolhouse shooter. Monville will share her testimony of how being rooted in Christ helped her get through one of the darkest seasons of her life. There will be opportunities to financially support CEF of Lancaster County. The ministry is growing, which has resulted in additional needs. To register for the event, readers may visit http://cef banquet2019.event brite.com.

Food Bank Receives Donation programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. It is projected that this grant will enable the food bank to restructure its traditional backpack programs, which only serve the child, into school pantry and mobile distribution programs, which will feed the whole family. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities it serves. Through its Made-to-Share program, Sheetz is
rescuing food from its 588 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint. To learn more about the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, readers may visit www.centralpafood bank.org. For more information about Sheetz, readers may visit www.sheetz.com. Sheetz For the Kidz is a nonprofit organization, designated as a 501(c)(3) charity, independent of the Sheetz Corporation. To date, the charity has impacted more than 119,500 children living in the communities Sheetz serves.
WIC Program Sets Changes Pennsylvania’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is offering its families a new way to shop for WIC food benefits using an Electronic Benefits Transfer (eWIC) card. WIC families in Lancaster County may begin using this new tool. The eWIC card is designed to make shopping quick, easy and convenient for WIC families and their grocery stores. WIC participants will save time at the checkout and can buy WIC foods
in as many shopping trips as they need throughout the month. Participants may also have access to a new WICShopper smartphone app, allowing them to scan a food’s bar code to determine if it is a WIC-allowed food. WIC provides services at more than 250 clinic sites throughout Pennsylvania and serves approximately 205,000 pregnant women, infants and children under age 5. These WIC families shop at more than 1,500
Pennsylvania grocery stores and spend $248 million a year with their WIC food benefits. Lancaster WIC has been offering participant-centered nutrition education, healthy food and breastfeeding support and has been serving as a gateway for preventative health for more than 40 years. It has appointment openings. For more information about WIC, readers may visit www.caplanc.org or www.pawic.com or call 717-5093686 or 800-WICWINS.
