Sitting on the ridge, with a view to both Pequea Valley and the ELANCO area, Ridgeview Mennonite Church has been a beacon for the Anabaptist faith since 1963. In late August, the church called a new pastor. Katelyn Robbins, who lives in the Hempfield School District, began preaching and overseeing the small but active congregation situated on the hilltop.
“I grew up at Neffsville Mennonite Church, and that has been my spiritual home,” said Robbins, who graduated from Hempfield High School before attending Penn State University in University Park. Robbins earned degrees in both history and English, completing a five-year program to obtain her master’s degree in English in 2021. When she started college, Robbins planned to become a professor, but she was not sure the halls of academia were the right place
Run, auction to benefit West Fallowfield Christian School
BY FRANCINE FULTON
West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS), 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen, will hold its sixth annual fun run and 43rd annual auction on the weekend of Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11 and 12. Both events are open to the community.
Activities will begin on Oct. 11 with the fun run, during which participants will be invited to walk or run 1 mile around the WFCS campus. All participants will be doused with color at the

for her. While matriculating at Penn State, Robbins had become involved with the ministry of a local church. “(Working with that church) really gave me a lot of life,” recalled Robbins.
“It gave me a lot of purpose.”
Robbins realized she could utilize her skills and love of reading, writing, and history with work in a community. Acting on that epiphany, she attended seminary at Boston University School of Theology in Boston. “(The seminary) is historically Methodist, but there were people there from lots of denominations, which is something I was looking for,” said Robbins.
As she approached graduation in the spring of 2024, Robbins knew that she wanted to stay true to her Mennonite roots, so she contacted Mennonite Church USA. “I reached out to them and got into the system,” said Robbins, who soon learned Ridgeview was looking for a pastor. She interviewed with
the Ridgeview search committee twice before taking part in a “candidating” weekend where she enjoyed a fellowship meal with members of the congregation and preached a sermon.
Robbins was attracted to the church’s willingness to nurture a new pastor. “It’s a congregation that does have a lot of people who have worked in ministry,” said Robbins, who was also attracted to the church’s appreciation for marking life events. “There was a lot of overlap in needs for the ritual acknowledgement of transition, which is something I feel passionate about,” said Robbins, who referred to “moments of change and transition, including retirement, graduations, and funerals.” “For me, that’s a big part of the life of the church,” she said. Robbins added that search committee members showed enthusiasm about Ridgeview being a place where differing opinions can thrive side by side. “I look for that because we live in a polarized

Cavod to produce “Mary Poppins”
BY ANN MEAD ASH
In 1964, the Walt Disney company introduced the world to its version of the magical nanny Mary Poppins, who is “practically perfect in every way.”
The movie “Mary Poppins” was based on P.L. Travers book of the same name.
Now, Cavod Theatre invites audiences to experience anew the story of the “practically perfect” caregiver’s transformative visit to the Banks family. Directed by Jaime Hilton, the show will be
presented at the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Oct. 19 and 26; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays Oct. 20 and 27. Set in early 20th-century London, “Mary Poppins” introduces the mysterious title character, played by Sophia Grado, who appears seemingly out of nowhere with the intention of bringing order to chaos with an “element of fun.” Mary’s unique blend of

time,” reflected Robbins, who noted that being a place where people can come together to worship and talk together and be OK with holding different views is important.
Ridgeview regularly holds Tuesday Alive programs for area residents who are 55 and older. The gatherings involve lunch and other activities. The church also runs Lifeways Food Pack Program, which provides food and other necessities for students in the Pequea Valley School District. Robbins said the church is also interested in her input on a community event that would engage younger families.
Currently, Ridgeview, located at 3723 Ridge Road, Gordonville, holds Sunday school for people of all ages at 9 a.m. and worship at
10:15 a.m. each Sunday. Robbins said she is especially looking forward to preaching during Advent, and she is planning a series with a lot of art involved, beginning in December. “It should be visually engaging. I hope we can get a little creative,” said Robbins.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done

Staying sharp: Brain-boosting tips
Cognitive decline is a concern for many adults as they get older. Memory loss and trouble processing ideas can sometimes be a side effect of aging, as Everyday Health says the brain changes in size and structure as a person gets older. The changes can affect how well the brain works over time. Furthermore, illnesses affecting the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease, may start showing their symptoms in people who have reached their mid60s, says the National Institute on Aging.
Older adults who want to boost their cognitive health may consider a few strategies.
Maintaining healthy blood pressure and
cholesterol levels is associated with better cognitive function, according to data published in 2021 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Lowering blood pressure also reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.
When learning new information, people are encouraged to use multiple senses. Harvard Health says that when more senses are used in learning something, more of the brain is involved in retaining the memory.
Staying physically active is also important. Exercise helps maintain blood flow to the brain, which also helps to reduce the risk for hypertension.
According to Cone Health Medical Group, eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids,
The role of a home health aide
like tuna, salmon, and mackerel, decreases risk for cognitive decline. People should avoid saturated fats, trans fats, and hydrogenated oils.
Getting into the written word can also be beneficial.
According to a study in the journal Neurology, regular reading and writing in one’s older years reduced the rate of memory decline by 32%. Joining a book club or simply reading more on one’s own can improve cognition. Similarly, writing improves memory and communication abilities and can help strengthen
the brain.
Avoid drinking sugary beverages and limit consumption of alcohol, as neither boasts brain-boosting properties. Instead, consider tea or coffee; these beverages can improve alertness and focus, as they’re rich in polyphenols and antioxidants. A Place for Mom says caffeine in these beverages can help solidify new memories.
Keeping the brain sharp is a multilayered process that involves healthy foods and beverages, exercise, and brain-stimulating activities.
Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but plenty of others do their part to maintain the well-being of individuals. Among these caregivers are home health aides.
Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, assist people with activities of daily life. An aide typically helps a person who may need assistance with tasks he or she cannot perform due to illness or disability. The aides may work in a person’s home, in a group home, or in another care facility.
AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location. Their duties may include assistance with personal care, such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from a bed to a chair; checking vital
signs; monitoring a client; light housekeeping; meal planning and cooking; picking up prescriptions; and providing companionship. Aides typically will

from pg 6
not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications.
Individuals can enlist the services of home health aides who work independently or are placed through agencies. Sometimes a doctor or hospital has connections to aide services and can make referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential aides to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A good aide is compassionate, patient, and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, aides must be able to adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations.
Home health aides serve an important role in the health care community by providing care and companionship to those who can no longer live independently.

magic with a no-nonsense attitude captivates the Banks children - Michael, played by Foster Harris, and Jane, played by Gracelyn Fulmer - as she takes them on adventures featuring a cast of characters, including her friend, Bert, the chimney sweep, played by Caleb Zimmerman.
To help prepare her cast of more than 30 adults and children, Hilton dug into the meaning of the word “perfect,” noting that she does not view “perfect” to mean that something is without flaws. “(I believe it means) to be mature and complete and that is what Mary Poppins brings to this very disordered home.”
The musical is known for more than 20 numbers, a few of which feature show-stopping dancing and choreography. Well-known tunes will include “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Jolly Holiday,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”
“The music is delightful,” noted Hilton. “The dance numbers are fun.” Hilton said she recently
attended a high-energy choreography rehearsal. “I walked in and they were dancing, and I broke into a smile,” she said. “The music gets into your soul, and I just love it.”
Hilton pointed out that staging a show that is so well known presents difficulties in that audiences are accustomed to the special effects of the Disney movies. “The biggest challenge is the magic,” pointed out Hilton. “People come expecting (Mary Poppins) to fly.” Hilton noted that the story in the live show differs somewhat from the movie. “There are slightly different characters, but we are finding ways to keep it magical, surprising, and fresh.”
According to Hilton, Mary Poppins’ effect on the Banks’ home extends beyond her relationship with the children. “Mr. Banks (played by Jordan Ave), and Mrs. Banks (played by Eliza Moran) are trying to grow up,” she noted, explaining the couple is torn between societal expectations and their own more imaginative personalities. “Mary brings this balance of
