“Athird of our kids don’t go to college, and we don’t apologize for that,” said Matt Buckwalter of the student population at Linville Hill Christian School, where he serves as head of school.
“We don’t believe 100% or even 50% should go.” Buckwalter went on to explain how the 80-yearold school prepares students for life after graduation by helping them discover their interests and developing critical skills.
Part of that preparation utilizes internship opportunities with area businesses.
Internships work
The internship program at Linville Hill, which is a critical part of student preparation for the real world, is overseen by Michele Mabus, director of career development and internship with Linville Hill. According to Mabus, the gist of the program can be found in a few questions. “It’s really answering ‘who am I?’ and ‘where do I fit?’” explained Mabus, who noted that the internship program involves a variety of opportunities to help students discover their passions and grow into applying what they have
learned to a career. “They find a place where they come to life,” she stated. “(They discover) a gift that they have, and it opens them up to a maturity level of understanding that this is a transferable skill.”
Sean Rowe to play at The Factory
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Ever since Adam Nagle became the director of The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, he has been trying to organize a fundraising concert at the location. “We have looked at it a number of times, but we couldn’t get the right artists, timing, resources,” recalled Nagle.
Enter local influencer Brother Daniel with the contacts to bring national recording artist Sean Rowe to The Factory stage as
part of an event called “Trying to Leave Something Behind.”
Rowe, known for his strong vocals and poetic lyrics, will perform a live benefit concert at The Factory on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. The event’s name comes from Rowe’s song “To Leave Something Behind,” which was utilized at the end of the movie “The Accountant” starring Ben Affleck.
Daniel tells the story of the anonymous donor who has endeavored to make the concert available locally. “This is the

On a deeper level, Mabus noted that a student’s growth through the program results in “a sense of identity and brings them into the community in a way that is life-giving and makes them feel they have a place.”
To arrive at that place, students begin by learning soft skillscharacter building, collaboration, teamwork, communication, and problem solving - as they serve

Staying faithful
Last year, when David Kieffer was interviewed about the first FaithfulGive, the board president said that he hoped the online giving event would raise $500,000. “My minimum goal was to do $300,000,” recalled Kieffer. “(I thought), ‘If we do $500,000, it’s a resounding success.’” When all the donations were tallied up at the end of the event, the 2023 FaithfulGive had raised more than $729,000. “That more than met my expectations,” said Kieffer.
Linville Hill Christian School student Denver learned about airplane maintenance as part of an internship program to help students get real-world experience while still in high school.

as ambassadors for Linville Hill and perform projects in the community at places like Woodcrest Retreat and The Factory. Students also take part in one-day job shadowing experiences. Mabus has connected with about 300 area businesses to create internship opportunities for students to find their passions in the workplace. Student Victor Lohr is one of 33 Linville seniors who have gone through the program. Lohr tried his hand at installing flooring and working in landscaping, but he thinks he has settled on a career in auto mechanics. “I enjoy doing that,” he noted. “I like working on something

different every day.”
Senior Stephen Smucker thought he might want to go into construction, until he tried it. Working at a shed shop and a construction company gave him experience in the trade. “I did enjoy the work, but I realized it’s not something I want to do full time and long term,” said Smucker, who added that he learned that he likes hands-on work in the outdoors and that he doesn’t mind getting dirty.
Emily Martin’s internship experiences working at a day care and doing home health visits with her mother, who is a nurse practitioner, led her to discover her passion for helping others. “I learned that I thrive on deep, meaningful relationships, and I have a passion for getting to know others and caring for them,” said Martin, who added that the effort confirmed her interest in psychology and counseling and her plans to attend the University of Valley Forge to major in both subjects.
According to Mabus, one aim of the program is
to give students a chance to examine situations within the region and look for creative ways to help rectify them. “Our entrepreneurship class is beginning to write a business plan that identifies a significant need and finds a resolution to that need,” she explained, noting that the exercise is intended to help grow a student’s ability to think critically, ask good questions, and solve problems. “As they go out where the Lord leads them, they are prepared with their own unique set of gifts to be a part of a community and have an impact,” she said.
Buckwalter noted that the internship program was part of the idea for adding a high school to the elementary program. This idea began to form in the spring of 2015 when the school surveyed parents. When administration learned that parents were interested in a high school program, Buckwalter engaged in discussion with local businesses. He learned that a four-day academic program with a fifth day devoted to internships as an elective spoke to the need for more young people to enter certain trades, as well as helping to fulfill the mission of the school.

Mennonite Life to host author
Lucinda J. Kinsinger will discuss her book, “Anything But Simple: My Life as a Mennonite,” in the Community Room at Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m.
“Anything But Simple” is the memoir of a young woman’s rich church tradition, lively family life, and longing for a meaningful future within her Mennonite faith. As a schoolteacher in a small Mennonite school in rural Wisconsin, Kinsinger wears long dresses and a prayer covering but also uses Facebook and a cellphone. In her memoir, Kinsinger explores ques -
tions such as “Why would a young woman with access to modern technology remain within a sheltered community like the Plain Mennonites?” and “How can someone with an eye for beauty and a sometimes sardonic wit stay within a tradition that values discipline and submission and uniformity?”
In addition to being an author, Kinsinger is a columnist for “Anabaptist World” and a blogger at www .lucindajkinsinger.com.
The event is complimentary and does not require registration. To learn more, visit www .mennonitelife.org/events or call 717-393-9745.
Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

BY FRANCINE FULTON
Freedom Life Church will present the 10th annual Freedom 5K and fun run followed by a Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Salisbury Township Community Park, commonly known as Gap Park, 750 White Horse Road, Gap.

ultimate pay-it-forward,” said Daniel, who explained that “Trying to Leave Something Behind” refers to the legacy our life’s work can leave for others. According to Daniel, the local anonymous donor did Rowe a favor at one time, and Rowe has insisted on paying that favor back. “Sean lives his faith,” noted Daniel. “He said, ‘I have to pay it forward.’” Since Rowe is on a tour of the Northeast and playing in nearby Wayne, he offered to come to the donor’s house for a private concert. The donor wanted to do more. “We don’t put our light under a bushel,” pointed out Daniel. “We let it shine.” The donor told Nagle that Rowe was available for one night and that he could play at The Factory. Nagle happily accepted the offer.
To help keep the costs of the event low, Best Western Plus Intercourse Village Inn is donating Rowe’s accommodations during his visit to the area.
Along with the music, organizers have arranged for food to be available for purchase at the event. “We have a number of food trucks coming,” said Daniel, who was especially happy to tell of one food truck owned by a woman who attended The Factory Ministries youth programs until she was in third grade. “She is coming back to support The Factory,” stated Daniel, who added that each food truck owner would donate a portion of profits to the ministry.
Nagle is looking forward to finally seeing his dream of a benefit concert at the venue become a reality. “It’s a real gift,” said Nagle, who noted that the anonymous donor came to him with not only the idea, but a plan and put the show together at minimal cost.
Several options are available to attend the limited-seating concert. All proceeds will benefit The Factory. Entrance to the concert will be free as space

Kieffer is hoping to build on last year’s success. “We really felt God opened people’s hearts (last year),” he said, noting that the team worked well to deal with first-year hiccups. “(The team) had such a desire to serve one another and the community,” recalled Kieffer. “They worked through obstacles, and it was a pleasure.” Looking forward, he would like to top the 2023 event in both funds raised and service to participating ministries. “We are praying for $1 million this year,” he
