In March, Chris Lenhart did not know that Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC), 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, would soon be looking for a lead pastor when he resigned from his associate pastor position at Wesley Church in Quarryville after 14 years. “I felt a call to leave the church I was at … to pursue a lead position in another local church,” said Lenhart, who still lives in the Quarryville area. “(I) stepped away in faith believing that God had prepared (an) opportunity. (My wife, Sheila, and I) trusted that God had worked out the details and prepared our next place.” Lenhart, who was raised in Holtwood and graduated from Penn Manor, said that he and his family were committed to staying within the county. Holiday Bazaar To Help Fund Mission Trip To Guatemala

For Jeremy Leaman, founder and director of Ten Million for Christ, who grew up on a farm south of Strasburg, the invitation to lead a Youth Evangelism Service (YES) team to Romania as part of Eastern Mennonite Missions became a life-changing opportunity. “From the spring of 1993 to the summer of 1994, (our team) worked with churches there,” said Jeremy, whose team started a Christian student movement and a church during the 15-month outreach. “I fell in love with the people, the culture, the language, the food, and the beauty of the countryside.” See Flag Football pg 8

The mission committee of Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church is planning to send 10 church members to Guatemala in May 2019 to work with Orphan Resources International (ORI). “We will be going to orphanages and helping with deliveries,” said committee member Margaret Sensenig, referencing ORI’s food delivery program. To help fund the trip, the committee has scheduled its annual holiday bazaar for Saturday, Oct. 27, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. The bazaar will feature food and up to 20 vendors selling craft items and products offered by home-based businesses. See Holiday Bazaar pg 8

Jeremy Leaman, director of Ten Million for Christ, played football with one of the boys from House of Hope in Romania during a recent visit. The organization will hold a fundraising flag football tournament and chicken barbecue at Petra Church in New Holland on Nov. 3.

Read Under the Lights was brought to Pequea Valley after LeeAnn Wenger, Marie Johnston, and Katie Beiler attended the Literacy Is for Life Conference in 2017. At the conference, another Pennsylvania school district shared an event called Reading Under the Lights that it held in its community. Wenger, Johnston, and Beiler decided the event was something they wanted to bring to the Pequea Valley community.

During intermission, athletes demonstrated their sports to the attendees and invited them to participate as well. Attendees were able to practice taking shots on a field

support from mentors, Lenhart took his leave and began looking at local churches. Before the end of March, he noticed a posting on the CMBC website. “There was no opportunity (at CMBC) when we left (Wesley),” noted Lenhart, who applied for the position immediately. Over the summer, he preached at CMBC a number of times, and he officially became lead pastor there on Sept. 1. After graduating from Penn Manor, Lenhart went to Clarks Summit University in Clarks Summit, where he majored in Bible. He began working at Wesley Church as a youth pastor right after graduating from college. After serving as a youth pastor for eight years, he moved into the associate pastor role. Lenhart earned his master’s degree in religious education from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. He has also completed all the necessary credits in the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) doctoral program in leadership and organiza-

tional management. In addition, Lenhart is in his 15th season of coaching varsity football at Solanco High School. He serves on the board of Black Rock Retreat, and he is a member of the LBC sport management accreditation team. The Lenharts have three children currently attending Solanco schools, and they are in the process of adopting two young brothers from Haiti. They hope to meet the boys for the first time when they visit Haiti in November. Community involvement is important to Lenhart, and he admires the way members of CMBC have reached out to residents in the local area. “I saw there was a strong connection between ministries at CMBC and a desire to reach the community,” said Lenhart, who is still becoming familiar with the church culture. He cited the Great Giveaway CMBC held on Oct. 11 and 12, the strong Awana program held Wednesday

nights during the school year, and the Miracle of Jesus event the church holds yearly at The Point in Parkesburg as evidence of this connection. Looking forward, his goal is for the up to 500 CMBC worshipers to move closer to God and develop stronger relationships. “I would like to see us grow in a greater love for God and each other,” said Lenhart. “That is predominant, and that will be an important emphasis as we grow together.” CMBC holds worship services each Sunday at 8:15 and 11 a.m. Sunday school and adult Bible fellowships meet at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday. “We want to be intentional about investing in each other both in the church and in the community,” said Lenhart, “with all the relationships the Lord directs into our paths.” CBMC will hold a reception for the family at the church on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m. Readers who would like to learn more about CMBC may visit http:// calvarymonument.org.

Beiler of Honey Brook. Wheat weaving is an ancient folk art that celebrated a successful harvest. Straw designs were created at the end of harvesting with a belief in a spirit that caused the grain to grow. To provide a resting place for this growing spirit, a weaving was made from the last grain cut or a choice bundle of grain. This design was kept in a safe place until the following spring, when a new crop was planted. At that time, the design was crushed and returned to the soil with the newly planted crop. In the fall of 2000, Jeremy returned to Romania, and he fell in love again. “That’s when I fell in love with my wife, Gabriella,” explained Jeremy, noting that Gabriella is from Galati. The couple married in 2001 and returned to the United States to raise their children, but in the last few years, the Leamans felt God nudging them to return to Romania. “We want to impact Romania now,” said Jeremy. “(Beginning Ten Million for Christ) will allow us to go back to Romania with a focus of bringing people to Christ. Our vision is to see ten million new believers come to faith in Romania and throughout Eastern Europe.” With that goal in mind, the Leamans are working with their team to organize a flag football tournament and chicken barbecue to be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The event will kick off at 8:30 a.m., and the first game will start at 9 a.m. The play will be six-on-six flag football, and players must be 16 and older to register. The top three teams will receive prizes, and all players will receive a T-shirt and lunch. Players are invited to bring their families to enjoy the game. Both chicken barbecue meals and chicken only will be available for purchase. Since late 2016, the Leamans have been working to build the foundation of their organization. “Ten Million for Christ was birthed from (our) passion for Romania and Eastern Europe,” said Jeremy, who launched the organization in 2017 with help from friends in Lancaster County. The Leamans moved to Florida to take part in a discipleship training school with Youth With

a Mission and completed an outreach in Romania with their four children. The organization is overseen by a six-member board, with Keith Yoder from Teaching the Word in Leola serving as chair. Jeremy noted that the ministry hopes to form partnerships with local churches in Romania and Eastern Europe and work with them toward impacting communities for Christ. “Our uniqueness is that one of our goals is to place coaches, consultants, and chaplains into businesses to build a platform to share the Gospel,” Jeremy explained. “We hope to have an influence among business leaders and those who are (still new) to the job and trying to figure out their place.” Through this strategy, Jeremy hopes to create jobs for business coaches. Over the summer, the Leamans and their children spent nearly three weeks in Romania serving in Cluj-Napoca. “We are hoping to form a collaboration with a church in that area to impact (Cluj-Napoca) for Christ,” said Jeremy. “That is our big goal for the end of the year.” The idea for a flag football fundraiser grew out of Jeremy’s love of holding get-togethers. “This is the biggest party I will probably ever throw,” he said. “I love sports, and I love good competition.” He recalled playing touch football on his family farm during high school and college. “We would mow out a field twothirds of the size of a football field,” he recalled. Readers who would like more information about the event or to register a team may visit www.tenmillionforchrist.org. Teams must be registered by Friday, Oct. 19.

Gabriel Whitman, director of the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) drama club, has always wanted to produce “Peter Pan, but when he read “Peter and the Starcatcher by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson with his nephew,

he decided he first wanted to stage the story of how Peter Pan became Peter Pan. CVHS will present “Peter and the Starcatcher at the school, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 and 20, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. A special free

dents were on board. The story also develops the relationship between Peter and Black Stache. “Captain Hook (Black Stache) was itching for someone he could play hero and villain with, and by the end of the show, he finds that person in Peter, said Whitman, who added that it is Stache who gives the orphan Peter his name. One challenge of staging the show is the minimalist set, which imagines two ships using rope and trunks. “It’s a jungle gym set, explained Whitman. “It’s supposed to be two ships, but it’s supposed to look like little boys put it together. Whitman noted that actors will create doors and mirrors using pieces of rope and even create shadows to help audience members visualize the set pieces. Another challenge is the number of scenes that require the students to perform acrobatic tricks on stage. Of course, the acrobatics contribute to the laughs the show should garner from audience members. “The show is very funny, Whitman noted. “There’s a lot of slapstick humor. All that humor is delivered with an undertone of Peter exploring the mystery of who he really is. “Peter is trying to find a family, said Whitman. “There are flashbacks of when (Peter) is in the orphanage before they hid on the ship to get away from the orphanage, said Whitman. “(Peter) is trying to find his identity. Peter eventually learns that he See Peter Pan pg 11

Introducing new material to students can be daunting to a director, but some of the more than 25 cast members had heard of the show and some had read the book. Peter Pan from pg 10 is destined to be a boy with special powers. “The pixie dust from the ‘Peter Pan’ story is called ‘starstuff’ in ‘Peter and the Starcatcher,’” explained Whitman. “Peter is able to fly because the trunk full of starstuff fell into the water, and Peter falls in with it.”

The message of the show is similar to the message of “Peter Pan,” but in “Starcatcher,” Molly saves the day along with Peter. Tickets for all performances are available at www.showtix4u.com by searching for “Conestoga Valley High School.”

PV Lady Booters Sit 6th in District Rankings by Ara Grigorian

The Pequea girls’ soccer team sits in sixth place in the district power rankings. The team completed the regular season with an 11-4-2 record (7-3-1 in league). The Braves, who finished third in Section Four and didn’t qualify for the league playoffs, faced Middletown in a non-league game on Monday. It was a game of comebacks and endurance. The teams traded leads until the score was tied after regulation play. Middletown’s Camryn Russ finally ended the match in its 98th minute, which came in the second overtime period. Grace Martin’s goal 70 minutes earlier had given PV a 1-0 advantage, which carried into the second half. Six

minutes into the second half, the Blue Raiders tied the score on Hayli Akakpo-Martin’s goal and took the lead eight minutes later on Sarah Miscevich’s goal. Brittany Shirk tied it up again, scoring in the game’s 68th minute. It stayed tied for 30 minutes of play. BOYS’ SOCCER For the Pequea Valley boys’ soccer team, it’s a wait-and-see situation in terms of who will be the Braves’ next opponent. After securing the Section Four title with a 10-1-1 league record, the Braves, who are 14-3-2 overall, now wait to see who their opponent will be in the District Three Class-AA playoffs. Currently the team is sixth in the district’s power rankings. The final week of the regular season had its ups and downs, including

an opening-round loss to Warwick in the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs. “You never like to lose in the playoffs,” head coach Peter Bennett stated. “Given that they’re Section One co-champions and in the top-five of

4A rankings in the district, for us to walk out with a 1-0 final bodes well with what we’ll be up against in districts. We have to wait until Thursday to see who we’ll be matched up against.” Taking a defeat with a positive

note - the thinking that it brings a team something to learn from - was what happened earlier in the week to the Braves. The team faced Lancaster Mennonite on Monday in a nonleague road game. The Blazers blanked the Braves 2-0 as Mesa Dula and Shota Totani scored off assists by Ben Lefever and Tyler Wagner. “The Lancaster Mennonite game was also a good non-league game for us to see what we’ll be up against in districts,” Bennett said. “It was also a preparation for us to be disciplined and ready against another good team. It was frustrating to lose, but we learned a lot from it.” That other good team was the one on the Braves’ schedule for the regular season finale. The Braves did respond in positive fashion by defeating Lancaster Catholic on the road Thursday afternoon. After falling behind 1-0 to their league rivals, the Braves came back for a 3-1 victory. “It hasn’t happened very often that we’ve had to come from behind in a match,” Bennett said. “But it tells you a lot about our maturity. We did not get flustered; we stayed the course. “We took care of our business throughout the season,” continued the coach, “and we put ourselves in a position to go there and get a win. I’m proud of how the boys overcame the

deficit.” Only six minutes after Catholic had taken the lead, the Braves tied the game on a free kick which resulted in an own goal by the Crusaders’ defense. The tie score stayed until 19

round on Friday at the Hershey Racquet Club. Kubis made it through to the second round with a 6-4, 6-0 win. In Thursday’s District Three 2A team championships at HRC, the Braves lost to Wyomissing 5-0. Weaver suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat in the first singles while Feister came up short in a 6-1, 6-1 final at second singles and sophomore Adalie Clemmer lost a tough 6-4 set at third singles. In doubles, Hope Fisher and Ryleigh Kurtz suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss while Caroline Bragg and Kristin Huenink were on the short end of a 6-1, 6-2 final. FOOTBALL The Elco Raiders intercepted three passes and recovered a Pequea Valley fumble in Friday night’s L-L League Section Three clash at home. They went on to defeat the Braves 34-0, and improved to 7-1 (6-1 league) while Pequea fell to 0-7 in league play, 0-8 overall. It was a fairly close game, however, until the fourth quarter. The Braves Photos by Connor Hollinger were within two touchdowns heading Pequea Valley’s Naomi Feister, left, and Sophia Weaver dropped a pair of 6-0 sets to Lancaster Catholic’s Riley Smith and Isabel Midinto the final period. Elco scored on an cap to finish second in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Class AA doubles championship last Monday at Conestoga Valley.

minutes into the second half where Josh Gingrich scored off a Bennett Nordhoff assist. Nordhoff would go on to assist on PV’s third goal as well. “Bennett has been a nice player for us in the back line,” said the coach. “We sort of moved him into the midfield. His vision and flexibility - going out of defense to midfield - certainly gave us a lift.”

That third goal came courtesy of Brandon Ratjavong in the final minute of the match - Pequea’s 13th shot on goal. “Brandon scored with about 30 seconds left to put the game out of reach,” Bennett explained. “It got crazy in the last couple of minutes. I was glad to see we didn’t just pack it in and defend. It was nice to see him

break through for one more goal.” Goalie Nehemiah Glick anchored the defense. Glick, who had four saves in each of the shutout losses this week, recorded seven saves against the Crusaders. TENNIS In the L-L League Flight Championships at Conestoga Valley on Monday, the duo of seniors Sophia Weaver

and Naomi Feister came in second at the Flight One doubles. Isabel Midcap and Riley Smith came through with 60, 6-0 victories. In singles competition, Weaver finished fifth in Flight One singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. In District Class-AA competition, Weaver faced Kendall Kubis of Lancaster Country Day in the opening

18-yard touchdown pass from Braden Bohannon to Erik Williams in the second quarter and held only a 6-0 halftime lead. Bohannon ran for the Raiders’ next TD from four yards out in the third quarter and moments later found Ethan Kissinger in the end zone for a two-point PAT pass play, making it 14-0. However, three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter put the Braves’ comeback hopes out of reach. The three scores included a five-yard fumble return by Austin Sprenkle. Braves quarterback Collin Bailey did complete 14 passes for 113 yards. Dylan Jackson carried the ball seven times for 84 yards and caught two passes for 12 more yards. Dalton Temple was on the receiving end of six passes for a total of 32 yards while Carter Rohrer caught an 18-yarder from Bailey. Bohannon ran for 147 yards on 25 carries and the rushing touchdown in the second quarter. Luke Williams ran for 90 yards on 17 carries and the games’ final score. The Braves’ next game will be at home against Ephrata.

Pie Sale Will Support Dyslexia Center By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The members of the Valley of Lancaster Lodge of Perfection are gearing up for their biannual piemaking frenzy. In preparation for Thanksgiving, which will be observed on Thursday, Nov. 22, the Masons are taking orders for 10 types of handcrafted, 10-inch,

deep-dish dessert pies. Thursday, Oct. 25, has been set as the deadline for orders. The pies will be available for pickup at Lancaster County Masonic lodges in Lancaster, Quarryville, Ephrata, Elizabethtown, and Mount Joy on Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 2 to 6 p.m. This fall’s lineup includes

baked and chilled minced meat, apple crumb, cherry crumb, peach crumb, and pumpkin, as well as fresh sugar-free apple, baked frozen pumpkin, and unbaked frozen apple crumb, cherry crumb, and peach crumb. The frozen pies may be stored until Christmas, although lodge member and pie project chair Bill Hackman said that he has successfully frozen pies for two years thanks to the heavy freezer bags the lodge uses to protect the baked goods. The Masons make their pie dough from scratch, and they use Hackman’s mother’s recipe for pumpkin pie. Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, founded by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo, is a nonprofit micro-sanctuary created to advocate for farm animals. “We have a few acres, and we have a few ambassadors for each species,” explained Turzi. “We rescue animals, and we hold public events where humans can interact with the animals and hear their stories.” Turzi noted that the animals at the farm were rescued from abusive or neglectful situations, but they are not available for adoption. She listed two types of chickens, sheep, dairy cows, pygmy goats, a turkey, and several ducks that now live permanently at the sanctuary. More information about the organization may be found at www.lancasterfarmsanctuary.org. Brendan Stengle of Music for Everyone said that the organization has provided Lancaster with thousands of musical moments through its downtown piano program, but what is not as well known is how many grants have been given to local school districts in the dozen years Music for Everyone has existed. “Last year, we gave $112,000 in grants to 13 different school districts,” said Stengle. “As an organization, we have invested more than $1.6 million in direct support for instruments.” Stengle said that the organization is currently purchasing instruments in bulk to stretch its buying power. “Over the next five years, our goal is to repair every school-owned instrument in Lancaster

Holiday Bazaar Set In Strasburg By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“(The congregation is) older than the United States,” boasted Millie Patterson, a member of groups for women and quilters at St. Michael Evangelical Lutheran Church, 40 E. Main St., Strasburg, which is 264 years old. The holiday bazaar and craft fair is not quite that old, but no one is quite sure when it began. “It’s been held since at least 1992, when I started coming to the church,” Patterson said. “It’s probably gone on longer than that, but it has been off and on.” The bazaar will definitely be on this year. The event will be held indoors at the church on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Approximately 10 vendors will sell

handcrafted items in the areas of sewing, woodworking, beading, allergen-free soaps and fragrances, and more. Items made from alpaca fiber will be available, and opportunities to win a hand-appliqued leaf quilt in autumn colors and a handwoven shawl will be available. A hot dog and beverage meal deal will be offered during the bazaar. Baked goods will be available as well. Apple dumplings may be purchased frozen for takeout or heated for eating on-site. Church members made 446 dumplings with Cortland apples on Sept. 22, and another work day was set for Oct. 6 to make even more. “They are very good,” Patterson commented, adding, “(The bazaar) keeps our women’s group going for

the year.” Proceeds from the bazaar will be used by the women’s group to contribute to local organizations like Christ’s Home, Clare House, and the Lampeter-Strasburg Santa’s Helper project, as well as families in need, disaster relief, meals for funerals held at the church, and special events. The quilters group will also receive a portion of the proceeds to buy fabric, batting, and other supplies. Later this season, the group plans to send 101 quilts to the Lutheran World Relief warehouse in Baltimore to be distributed around the world. For more information about the bazaar or to preorder apple dumplings, readers may call the church at 717-687-8211.

The 22nd annual COBYS Bike and Hike took place on Sept. 9 in downtown Lititz. The event drew more than 200 supporters and donors, and a new income record of more than $141,000 was raised for COBYS ministries. The increase in income marked the 20th consecutive year of growth for COBYS’ signature fundraiser. Since its inception, the Bike and Hike has raised more than $1.4 million for COBYS ministries. In addition to the walk, the event usually includes two bicycle rides and a motorcycle ride, all staged from the pavilion at the Lititz Church of the Brethren. The rides were canceled due to a flood advisory, and the event was moved inside to the church fellowship hall. A number of would-be riders walked instead or came to donate and pick up a T-shirt. In addition to 210 walkers, many others stopped in for fellowship and ice cream or to bid on the silent auction that ran throughout the afternoon. Total attendance was estimated at 350.

More than 100 businesses provided cash or in-kind donations of auction items, door prizes, or food and supplies. Cash sponsorships from businesses exceeded last year’s amount by $11,000 and the previous best by $6,000. The auction generated $4,921. Top fundraisers were Mari Cunningham of West Lampeter Township, $12,525; Floy Fitzkee, Manheim, $6,685; Londa Brandt, Manheim, $5,810; and Lucy de Perrot, Lititz, $3,900. COBYS carries out this mission through foster care and adoption services, counseling, and family life education.
