Outdoor Activity - Grace Point To Bring Back Fall Fun Fest BY ANN MEAD ASH

fter canceling the 2020 Fall Fun Fest due to COVID-19 restrictions and viewing the return of the event with uncertainty, members of Grace Point Church, 10 S. Singer Ave., Paradise, decided in mid-September to go forward with the 15th Fall Fun Fest with an emphasis on outdoor activities. This year’s event will be held at the church on Friday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. In 2018, church members served more than 650 meals and gave away candy to a large number of costumed children, and organizer Kathy Gehman expects that attendance will hit that mark again this year. Highlights of this year’s event will include an inflatable based on the game “bobbing for apples,” an inflatable obstacle course, and a bounce house. The fest, a trick-ortreat alternative, will also feature pedal races, Plinko, a Tilt-o-Whirl game, a game called “farming fun,”

Partnership Brings Seminar To Pequea Valley And Solanco

Chris Lenhart (left) and Dan Steinman display the Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) logo. CMBC and Handi-Vangelism are partnering with Beth Foss (not pictured) to hold a grief seminar in November.

According to Dan Steinman, Handi-Vangelism BASIS ministry assistant, the Help for People in Pain seminar given by Tim and Kathy Sheetz addresses any loss that significantly affects a person’s life and outlook. “It’s for people with different types of losses,” Steinman said. “Not necessarily the loss of a spouse or a child. It could be the loss of a job … a divorce or bankruptcy … a (difficult) diagnosis.”

Kenneth also served on the boards of SAF and the American Floral Endowment. Industry recognition is nothing new for Kenneth. In 1983, he was inducted into the American Academy of Floriculture and was named Pennsylvania Retail Florist of the Year.

In September, the Society of American Florists (SAF) recognized Kenneth Royer, inducting the Lebanon resident into the Floriculture Hall of Fame at the association’s annual convention in Orlando, Fla. He was honored for his contributions to the industry. Kenneth’s son Greg, chairman of Royer’s, accepted the award on his father’s behalf.. SAF noted that Kenneth was the first florist in the country to implement computerized systems for his stores and was among the first florists

PV Booters Claim Section Four Crown BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Section Four champions! The Pequea Valley girls’ soccer team bounced back from a tough loss in a crucial late-season match with Annville-Cleona to win its final two games and earn the section title. “We needed to beat Northern Lebanon on the final day to win the section outright,” said head coach Steve Morris. “We had at least a co-championship though, which is a first for Pequea Valley girls’ soccer.” Looking back at that Annville game, the Dutchmen met the Braves at Pequea Valley on Friday, October 8. Annville-Cleona’s 2-0 victory inched the Dutchmen closer to ST the top. “We made it interesting for ourselves,” Morris said, describing the standings following that loss. “It was one of those nights where we didn’t play to the best of our ability. Sometimes there are games like that.” The Braves were coming off an exciting 3-2 overtime victory over Lancaster Country Day at Pequea on Wednesday, October 6. and made 22 saves. Maddy Weaver had three saves for the Braves. Speaking of Senior Night heroes, Deena Stoltzfus scored the game-tying goal with about five minutes left in regulation. Senior Elena Esh scored one at the midway mark of the first half. Diller and Sierra Fisher each registered an assist. The home stretch required the Braves to hang on to their slim first-place lead by playing two road games in three days. On October 11, they edged Lancaster Catholic 2-1 in a night game as Esh and freshman Morgan Graham each scored. “Morgan Graham is a freshman who had a hat trick for us this year,” Morris said. “In section play, she leads our team in points - seven goals and three assists. She is talented and has done very well.” The return of Caroline Fisher also helped the Braves. The Pequea senior scored one of the team’s goals in the 2-1 victory at Northern Lebanon. Esh scored the other goal while Diller dished out both assists. FOOTBALL Peyton Temple threw for 141 yards and Darrel Beiler rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns as the Braves put up 21 points on Friday night, October 8, at Annville-Cleona. In the L-L League contest, the Dutchmen had burst out of the gate with 33 points and managed to hold on for a 55-21 win, improving to 3-3 (2-0 league) while the Braves fell to 1-5 (0-2 league). In the first half, the Dutchmen scores included three big plays Gavin Keller’s 75-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Missimer and Rogan Harter’s touchdown runs of 75 and 45 yards.

Grief from pg 1 Help for People in Pain will be presented at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC), 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program will be simulcast and livestreamed at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, for those who would rather attend at that location. Tim and Kathy have presented the seminar more than 200 times both in and outside the U.S., and the book they utilize will be updated for this event. “(Tim and Kathy) will offer tools to navigate through grief,” said Steinman. “They will talk about the different stages of grief and different ways to personally deal with the situations, including specific sections on illnesses or the death of a spouse.” Chris Lenhart, pastor of CMBC, noted that the seminar is not just for those who are grieving. “(An attendee) may be a neighbor or a co-worker or a good friend or a family member (who is) trying to figure out a way to reach out and care for (a grieving person).” Steinman shared that those who take the seminar often say they wish their pastor had attended one. Lenhart concurred, saying, “Pastors, ministry leaders who deal with loss, chaplains for retirement communities and hospitals … anyone who is around people experiencing grief and loss would benefit from attending this seminar. I think they will get valuable tools.” He added that he is looking forward to what he will learn. There is a cost to attend the seminar, which will include a book and lunch at both locations for those who register at https://calvary monument.org/journey-through -grief by Monday, Nov. 1. In-person registration on the day of the seminar may be completed at either church, but a book and lunch will not be guaranteed. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

made it 2-0 at the 10-minute mark. He scored again in the 68th minute and once more with two minutes to play. Jackson Neff, Peyton Leitch and Dylan Ratjavong each provided an assist. Pequea goalies faced twice as many shots as Crusader goalie Nathan Hummer, who had two saves. Jazae Itegi snagged nine saves for the Braves. Gabe McDonald had one save. Peyton Leitch scored two times in a 2-0 shutout of York Catholic in a non-league match two days later. The goalkeeping duties were split between Itegi and McDonald. “Gabe McDonald played the second half and made a big save on a penalty kick to keep it 2-0,” Bennett noted. The Braves finished 8-2-0 in league play and 13-4-1 overall. As the regular season wrapped up, the Braves were sixth in the District Three Class-AA power rankings. GOLF In the District Three Class AA Golf Championships at Briarwood, Pequea Valley’s Matthew Lapp and Kyle Ebersol missed the cut for the PIAA state qualifications. Lapp shot a 13-over-par 85 on his first day of competition. He shot a 92 the following day. Ebersol shot an 86 in the first round.

The Braves got on the scoreboard in the second quarter on Beiler’s four-yard surge into the endzone. Temple hit Jonathan Carter with a nine-yard TD toss later in the period, cutting the deficit to 33-13. Beiler added another score in the second half, taking a handoff and bulldozing toward the endzone from five yards out. Temple’s pass to Billy Johnson was the two-point conversion. BOYS’ SOCCER The final two games on the Pequea Valley boys’ soccer season featured six goals by two goal scorers. And the first such match with a multi-goal scorer also resulted in the Braves claiming the Section Four championship with a 4-2 defeat of Lancaster Catholic. “It’s great to be a Brave,” head coach Peter Bennett remarked, when reminded that the girls’ team also won the section title. Nevin Stoltzfus scored all four of his team’s goals, leading the boys’ soccer team to an exciting 4-2 defeat of Lancaster Catholic on Monday, October 11 at home. Stoltzfus poked the ball through the Crusaders’ defense twice in the first half and two more times in the second half. After giving his team a 1-0 lead a minute into the match, he

A Place Of Acceptance Karl Stoltzfus, one of the leaders of ELANCO Celebrate Recovery (CR), is clear about the heart of the ministry. “No one comes into recovery on a winning streak,” said Stoltzfus. “We are all here admitting that we are broken and we need connection and we need God. There’s no shaming in that, and I think that comes across in what we do here.” ELANCO CR celebrated its fouryear anniversary in September. The 12-step, Christ-centered discipleship recovery program meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, in the Student Life Center. A hot meal is served beginning at 6:15 p.m. Participation is not limited to those struggling with substance abuse, but it is also open to people experiencing a number of issues, including codependency, eating disorders, and anger. CR features worship, which usually includes a message or testimony, followed by small group meetings, which are divided by gender. On the second Thursday

of each month, a live worship band, made up mostly of CR participants, takes part. Carol Musser, who leads the CR group with Stoltzfus, noted that the specific restrictions and situations related to the COVID-19 pandemic have affected participants but have not changed the dynamics of the group. “I see a ramp-up in anxiety in the culture,” said Musser, who noted that depression is on the rise as well. “It’s hard getting back to normal,” she added. “There’s fear plugged into places that used to be precaution, and people who are in fear mode have a hard time connecting with others.” Mixing those issues with a divisive culture can intensify the struggle for those dealing with issues of addiction, codependency, and eating disorders, but Musser noted that ELANCO CR offers a place of acceptance rather than judgment. “As divisive as everything is, it hasn’t happened here, which has been a blessing,” said Musser. “(Participants) check their opinions at the door because they want the connection.”

With attendance ranging from 30 to 50 weekly participants, some journeying from Chester County, where CRs are not yet open, the small groups are currently divided into men’s recovery, men’s life issues and women’s recovery/life issues. “We wanted more robust discussions in our groups,” said Musser. During the next year, Musser and Stoltzfus hope to see more area residents help with the weekly meetings. “We would love to have more volunteers from the community that

would want to help on a regular basis,” said Musser, who noted that help is needed to facilitate, set up, tear down, and work with the audiovisual and sound components. “What we really need is people who love Jesus and love people and have a heart to serve,” she said. Readers who would like to know more about ELANCO CR may call 717-587-2202, email elanco celebraterecovery@gmail.com, or search for “ELANCO Celebrate Recovery” on Facebook.
