A Tale Of Two Families … And A Studebaker WMCC Table Dedicated To Howard H. Ranck By Ann Mead Ash

A Grow the Seed of Learning program

Workers prepare to remove a 1948 Studebaker Champion from the second floor of a barn located on Old Philadelphia Pike in Bridgeport. Pieter Hegeman, who recently purchased the car, had it moved from the perch, where it has rested since 1965, on Aug. 23. By Ann Mead Ash

On a rainy Friday morning at the end of August, Mary Henning stood outside the home where she grew up more than 50 years ago on Old Philadelphia Pike

Ginny Dissinger, Becky Zimmerman, and friend Demi Porter made a decision to honor the connection of Dissinger’s and Zimmerman’s father, Howard H. Ranck, to the Welsh Mountain Community Center (WMCC). Together, they bid on a picnic table at the Ranck United Methodist Church silent auction. The table had been constructed by young church members. The three asked Dan Pratt, who lives near WMCC, to make a plaque for the table, which reads, “In Memory of Howard Ranck,” and bears the likeness of a surveying tool. The table is now located in the park adjacent to the community center. See WMCC Table pg 3

WMCC Table from pg 1 Howard was born in the Green Bank area, which is close to both the church and the community center. He grew up on a farm located in the valley just below the Welsh Mountains. According to Dissinger, Howard was always more interested in locating the stones, stumps, and markers that defined the boundaries of the land than he was in farming. He attended businesses school and then completed an apprenticeship with his uncle, David G. Ranck, before beginning his own career as a surveyor. Beginning in the 1950s, Howard worked in the Welsh Mountains, among the members of a community that faced many difficulties. According to Dissinger, the area was depressed and food, shelter, and warmth during the winter months were needs the residents found difficult to meet. The community was private, and outsiders were not trusted. Howard made friends with George L. Boots, known as Pegleg, and through that friendship, he gained the trust of the local people that allowed him to complete his surveying work.

Howard developed an affinity for the youths of the Welsh Mountain community, and he, along with others, wanted the young people to have a place where they could play sports, such as basketball and baseball, and just enjoy themselves. Boots had owned land where Paes and Sandmine roads meet in East Earl. The land was transferred from Boots’ estate to A & C Equipment in 1968. An unproductive sand mine was located on the property as well. Howard surveyed the land, creating maps in 1969 and in 1978. Following the 1978 mapping of the land, the area was turned into a park and youth center. Howard’s grandson Jordan Good, senior client manager with C.S. Davidson in Lancaster, found the maps that Howard had created in relation to the the youth center and park. “I recently stumbled into my grandfather’s old plans,” said Good. The youth center burned in 1981. After the center was repaired, it became WMCC, with the mill stone from a former gristmill located at Ranck Road and Wallace Road as a centerpiece. Titus Musser, excavator, was

Dissinger commented on the changes in the Welsh Mountains since the time when the land became a park. Half a mile from the park is the Welsh Mountain Medical and Dental Center, which sits on land adjacent to Mountain View Terrace, a low-income housing option for area seniors, and the Welsh Mountain Home,

originally the Good Samaritan Home. The park includes playground equipment, open flat fields, and a pavilion. The park and community center are available for use by the community. Concerned about some limbs on an oak tree on the property, Mary had contacted Hegeman as she was preparing the place for auction on Sept. 28. The two were walking the property sharing memories of their childhoods when Tim DeGraves, who was also a friend of John’s, pulled into the driveway in a sports car. “I introduced him (to) Pieter, and they started talking about the car,” said Mary.

DeGraves remembered the Studebaker on the second floor of the barn, and the trio made their way up the stairs to see it. The year 1948 was special to Hegeman because it was the year that his parents began their landscaping business in Holland. It did not take Hegeman long to decide he would like to purchase the car, restore it, and take Mary’s parents, Martin and Elizabeth, who are both 92 and living in Lancaster area retirement communities, for a ride. Martin courted Elizabeth in the Studebaker. Martin was from Manor Township. Elizabeth lived in Blue Ball. Both graduated high school in 1945. Martin had a draft deferment because he worked on the farm, so he served stateside. Elizabeth attended St. Joseph School of Nursing, graduating in 1948. When Martin was a hospital patient, he met a few of Elizabeth’s friends who were nurses, and he attended Elizabeth’s graduation party as the date of one of them. In the fall of 1949, one of Elizabeth’s classmates came from Sunbury to visit. The two took the bus from Blue Ball to Lancaster, where her friend picked up a ride home. Elizabeth went to the YWCA to keep busy until the bus arrived to take her home, but Martin saw her waiting and offered her a ride to Blue Ball. The pair married on April 15, 1950, and they had five children, including Suzanne Tunis and George Greider. Martin Jr. and Suzanne have died of cancer. Mary’s memories of the farm are plentiful. “We had rabbits, geese,” she recalled. “We always wanted a dog, but animals had to serve a functional purpose,” she added, noting that her father brought the children twin calves to raise. One of the calves caused a bit of trouble. They called him Ferdinand. “One day he got loose, and I made a flying tackle and landed on him and sat on him until my siblings got there to help,” said Mary. Extracting the car from the second floor of the Greider barn was no easy task for Hegeman. Mary’s father had built a framework and shelves over the car. Hegeman and his crew spent six hours on Aug. 19 taking out the barn window and putting the car in position to remove it using the lift apparatus Hegeman rented. Hegeman, who remembers his parents having Studebakers when he was growing up, plans to restore the car and take it out for parades and shows.

Studebaker from pg 1 recalling that she and her four siblings spent their summer days doing chores. “We children were thrilled to go back to school,” said Mary. “The other students would complain that they were bored over the summer, but we had worked shelling peas.” Mary’s attention on Aug. 23 was called to the second floor of the barn located just adjacent to the house. Using a type of lift,

Pieter Hegeman, a local landscaper and lifelong friend of Mary’s brother, John, who died due to cancer, was working to remove a 1948 Studebaker Champion from the second floor. The car has been awaiting restoration since about 1965, when Mary’s father, Martin Greider, used a block and tackle, ramps, and the driving skills of his son, Martin Jr., to move the car to its lofty perch.

Pequea Valley School District (PV) hosted its third annual Read Under the Lights event on Sept. 26. This year, 188 children gathered under the stadium lights, which is a 64% increase from last year’s attendance. The idea for this event was born after three PV literacy staff members attended the 2017 Literacy Is for Life Conference in Hershey. The staff members said that after hearing of another Pennsylvania district that ran a similar initiative, they recognized the importance of family engagement through an event like this. At Pequea Valley’s Read Under the Lights event, participants visit stations where high school athletes read children’s books to PV learners of elementary age and younger. The event represents a community effort, involving community businesses that donate giveaway drawing items, district employee volunteers, representation from

ALL DONATIONS WILL GO FOR REBUILDING THE SCHOOL “The Bread to Man” is an educational school that was created in October 2010 to meet the social needs of the Pas bwa dom community. We have steadily been growing in number for the last nine years and continue to see progress academically. This year it started with 210 students and 30 employees. Some of the biggest problems of the school are parents not having the sufficient funds, keeping our professors paid, and having a functional school building. We are looking for sponsors to help with the school. Pray with us that God would provide for the school.

Second Trunk Or Treat Planned

GOLD BUYING

By Ann Mead Ash

WE MAKE HOUSECALLS!

Before New Life Assembly of God organized its first Trunk or Treat in 2018, church members thought about what kind of event would reach out to local residents. “We wanted (an event) just for the (local) community … to give back to the community and to be a part of what’s going on around here,” said Julie Capaldi, who serves as children’s pastor. “We wanted to get to know (people) and give them a chance to know us.” Capaldi reported that response to the event was positive. “We had beautiful weather. It was wonderful,” she recalled, noting that about 200 area residents came out to relax and chat. Capaldi is hoping for another nice evening when the church holds its second Trunk or Treat at 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

“Last year, we had 21 trunks, and this year, we hope to have more than 25,” said Capaldi, who explained that each vehicle trunk will have its own positive theme. “It could be biblical, a superhero (theme), or sports,” she said. “Last year, we had an Eagles trunk and a Penn State trunk, and we had Captain America. He will definitely be there (again).” In addition to showing off their decorations, trunk owners will give out candy when attendees visit. Additional free food will include pretzels and water. According to Capaldi, each visitor who fills out a registration card will be entered to win a “trunk” prize, which will be a gift basket of goodies. Capaldi said that the church has also arranged for a member of the East Lampeter Police Department to be available to talk to visitors. The Lafayette Fire Company plans to bring a truck to the venue as well.

Organizers of the second New Life Assembly of God Trunk or Treat are looking forward to welcoming area residents to the church on Oct. 31 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. People of all ages are welcome at the event, and children are encouraged to dress up in positive costumes. To keep the atmosphere relaxed, there is no schedule of activities for the event. “We are excited (about the event),” said New Life pastor Ron Bradley. “We are looking for ways

to get better acquainted with and serve the community, and this is one of those ways.” Capaldi agreed. “It’s a night to have fun and share the love of God,” she said. Readers who would like more information about the event may visit www.newlifelancaster.org.

There is no secret that the 2019 season has been a challenging one for a young Pequea Valley football team. Head coach Jeff Werner will be the first to point out that evaluating this team isn’t necessarily on basis of its 0-8 record. “One of the things I’m most proud of is that the kids have adopted the ‘no quit’ attitude,” Werner explained. “This is a resilient bunch. “There have been games that were blowouts in the first half - being down 24 points,” continued the coach. “They could have thrown in the towel. But what it says about their character is that they don’t give up. They come out in the second half and play hard in the second half - sometimes allowing only one score in the second half against teams that have their starting lineups

The Braves allowed 35 first-half points but only two touchdowns in the third quarter of their game against Elco on Friday, October 11. The Raiders improved to 5-3 with the 48-0 win. BOYS’ SOCCER The Pequea Valley boys’ soccer team played one of the handful of Lancaster-Lebanon League playoff games requiring extra time on Saturday, October 12. In that weekend, Cocalico topped Hempfield in a girls’ playoff game that went into penalty shootouts; the Cocalico boys lost to Warwick in PK’s, and the Pequea boys’ team came up short in a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to Lampeter-Strasburg in a match played at Lancaster Catholic. “There is a lot of parity in the league this year,” Pequea head coach

close finishes. “It seems to show in the league playoffs.” The Pioneers’ Maximo Franco scored 2 minutes into the first overtime. Though moral victories don’t help you advance in the playoffs, the Section Four champion Braves did make it through the regular season without losing a league game (12-0-0) and head into the District Three Class-AA playoffs as the fifth-ranked team. “It’s worth putting into context that Lampeter-Strasburg is ranked fourth in Class Triple-A,” Bennett noted. “We were better than they were at times but couldn’t make it count. “Not that we’re looking for any moral victories,” he added. “But for us to be able to play with one of the top teams in triple-A, we should have confidence against quality teams in

The Braves had goalie Jazae Itegi between the pipes. The backup goalie came up with five big saves in the close contest. “We had our backup goalie because Nehemiah Glick was out with a concussion,” explained Bennett. “I thought Jazae played very well. He had played in our last game against Lancaster Catholic. For him to be thrown in that pressure situation and to do so well speaks to the depth we have.” Last year, the Braves were knocked out by eventual state champ Fleetwood in a 4-3 final during districts. “The boys want another shot after having seen what it felt like to be in districts last year,” Bennett said. NEW PATIENTS WELCOME

Youths of the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prepared thank-you and get-well bags for deployed members of the military, hospitalized veterans in Lebanon, and children in the pediatric ward at York Hospital. The activity was part of an Eagle Scout project. Young members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake, Lancaster and York Counties, attended their church’s annual Youth Conference from July 18 to 20 on the campus of Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown. A total of 93 men and women ages 14 to 18 from all seven wards and two branches of the Lancaster Stake participated. The Church stated that the purpose of the conference is for youths to build faith in Jesus Christ, strengthen their testimonies, develop their talents, make new friends, and have fun with peers who share similar beliefs and standards. Youth conferences are usually held once each year during the summer on a ward level, with each congregation holding its own conference, or on a stake level, with all congregations in a large geographical area combining. This stake youth conference was planned and carried out by the Stake Aaronic Priesthood - Young Women Committee under the direction of stake president Conrad Knudson of York. The youths were invited to assist the committee as much as possible in planning the conference. The youths first selected a Gospel theme for the conference. They could choose a Scripture, a quotation from a prophet, or another theme. The theme this year was “Survivor - Overcoming Challenges, Overcoming Fears.” The youths planned activities, such as devotionals, group meetings, learning experiences, sports activities, and service projects that were consistent with the theme. On the first night, participants attended a luau complete with a pig roasted by Philip Sherffy, a Scouting committee member. The event was held on Elizabethtown College’s Brinser Field, which was decorated with a Hawaiian theme and included a photo booth. Youths from the Harrisburg Stake joined the Lancaster Stake members for the event. The conference also included Etiquette Night, organized and led by young men’s stake president Monte Ward and his wife, Jennifer. Youths were transported to the Lancaster Stake building, 1136 Sunwood Lane, Lancaster, and in their Sunday best, they first spent time learning about proper etiquette and then ate a meal served by elders in the stake. The young men and young women practiced their new skills in proper dining etiquette. The event concluded with a dance in the cultural hall, where the youths and adults practiced their dance etiquette skills. Another special activity was a three-part Eagle Scout service project organized by Derek Brown from Troop 184 of the Shrewsbury Ward. Prior to the conference, Derek placed boxes in the foyers of the churches in the stake for member donations of useful items to give to various groups in need and to help the Eagle Scout candidate complete his

goal. At the conference, attendees sorted the contributions and decorated and filled bags with items that would then be donated to Veterans Affairs for deployed members of the military and those in the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lebanon, as well as the pediatric ward at York Hospital. Deployed individuals received beverage packets, while men and women at the VA Hospital received puzzle books and small hygiene items, including deodorant, body wash, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

Youth Conference participants (from left) Trent McBride, Payson Elmore and Bryce Popolis, along with Trent’s father, Adam McBride, played tennis. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sponsored its annual Youth Conference in July. Patients at York Hospital received toys and games, such as puzzles, stuffed animals, craft kits, coloring books and crayons. Each evening of the Youth Conference ended with a devotional within groups divided into tribes, and each morning started with a devotional given by invited members from the Stake. The final morning of the Youth Conference included workshops on special subject matters chosen by the youths. Youths could learn more about patriarchal blessings, improve upon social skills when interacting with other young people, and attend “Survival 101” to learn

the basic skills needed when one leaves home. The Youth Conference ended with a special testimony meeting conducted by president Allen Zerbe of the stake presidency. Upon their return from the Youth Conference, many of the young men and women reported to their congregations the following Sunday. Members of the bishopric or stake presidency were invited to attend as much of the conference as possible. Leaders of the church’s groups for young men and young women were encouraged to attend the entire conference.

Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be on-site at all times during operating hours. A year ago, members of Stonecroft Ministries Lancaster decided to hold an event called Story Marks in Lancaster. The gathering featured photos and testimonies of a number of local women about how their tattoos are an expression of their Christian journeys. The event was so well received, the group, which includes Rebekah Christens-Persaud, Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, Linda Johnston, Marlene Hall, Joleen Yunginger, Blanche Myer, and Lily Cheng, has decided to hold a second presentation. On Thursday, Oct. 24, area women are invited to the Barn at Stoner Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, in Overlook Park, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos; hear speakers, including Friedrichs; and enjoy light fare. This year’s gallery will feature more than a dozen photos of women and the tattoos that have been an expression of their Christian journeys. “Every woman has a story,” said Strohecker. “The event is about sharing stories,” added Christens-Persaud. Both women emphasized that the group welcomes each woman “where she is, as she is.”

women in the audience,” said Strohecker, who noted that attendees need not have a tattoo. Christens-Persaud added that the concept involves women talking about experiences and relying on each other to understand. Friedrichs will serve as master of ceremonies, but she will also speak briefly in a talk based on the book “Uninvited” by Lysa TerKeurst. “Have you ever walked into a room full of women and felt all alone?” asked Strohecker. “We all know that feeling,” added Christens-Persaud. Strohecker emphasized that the group wants women who attend to feel exactly the opposite. “We want every woman who walks in there to feel invited,” she said. “We want to embrace women from all walks of life,” said Christens-Persaud. “We will be … intentional about that.” More than 80 women attended last year’s event, and organizers hope more will join them this year. There is a nominal cost to attend the event. Readers who would like to attend may register by searching for “Story Marks” at www.eventbrite.com. Individuals who would like more information may search for “Stonecroft Lancaster County PA” on Facebook. Those with specific questions about the event may call 717-701-9767.
