Pequea Valley

Salisbury Elementary School second-grader Ashton

Pincin’s favorite book is “Dragons Love Tacos.” Ashton was one of more than 330 children, including preschoolers through sixth-graders, who attended the seventh Read Under the Lights event at Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) on Oct. 3.

Of the 10 reading and activity stations located on the gridiron, Ashton said the one run by the football players was his favorite.

Asked what he liked about the event, Ashton responded, “The games, the books, and the prizes.”

Lisa Eckert, Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) director of early learning, said that the stations were manned by PVHS athletes, but that Karla Beiler, director of PVSD elementary advocacy, had devised the games, which all featured educational elements. “There’s fishing for letters,” said Eckert, gesturing to

a station. “We have a duck and letter match. Some are literacy based, and some are counting.”

Activities cleverly combined educational exercises with physical movement. Members of the cross-country team guided children in completing a workout that designated a physical activity for each letter of a child’s name. The football players oversaw an activity that combined hopscotch with a bean bag toss, but the athletes also endeavored to share their sport with younger learners, according to Eckert. As children and their 230 accompanying family members moved from station to station, they also worked to complete a scavenger hunt, which could earn each child a free ice cream at the snack stand.

Since the event was devoted to reading, books were a central focus of the evening. Eckert explained that as each child arrived, he or she received a bag with a ticket for a free book. “This is the book station,” she said,

Fall Fun Fest planned at Grace Point

A few things have changed for the 18th Grace Point Church Fall Fun Fest. According to organizer Kathy Gehman, the 2024 event will be a bit more caffeinated.

“This year, we will have a coffee truck to purchase specialty coffees,” said Gehman of the dispensary owned by a church member.

The 2024 Fall Fun Fest will be held at the church, 10 S. Singer Ave., Paradise, on Friday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Gehman reported that last year during the event, 5,000 pieces of candy were given away and 300 meals were served.

Feeding the hungry

As part of an effort to serve people in need in the community, Pequea Presbyterian Church in Gap offers free food to the public every Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. No proof of income is required.

The church obtains the items from Blessings of Hope, a food distribution ministry that receives food from food producers and distributors, as well as grocery stores.

Each person gets several boxes of food at the church in a drive-up

format. “We have a dry goods box, a produce box and a refrigerated or frozen box,” explained food ministry volunteer Doris Witmer, who is also a church deacon. On a recent Friday, the fresh produce box contained potatoes, snap peas, strawberries, lettuce, grape tomatoes and peaches. “We usually have something they can make a salad with, and we try to get fresh fruits and vegetables,” said church pastor Alfred Wanner. The cold box contained chocolate milk, yogurt, liquid eggs, frozen shrimp fried rice and ice cream,

while the dry goods box contained canned goods, cookies, tea and a loaf of bread.

“The church pays Blessings of Hope for the food. It’s not free to us, but it’s free to the community,” said Wanner, noting that people of all ages come to get the food, which has been given

out at the church for more than 10 years. “We have had some people come to church as a result of (the ministry).”

Each food recipient also receives a printed lesson written by the pastor. “He gives them a message every week,” said Witmer.

Those who visit the church for free food are asked to provide their contact information and agree to use the food items they are given for themselves. They are also free to share the food with others.

“We work with Blessings of Hope. They have the policy that the food must not be sold or bartered, and we remind people of that,” Wanner added. “If we have someone new come in, we make sure they are aware of that.”

Assisting in the ministry is Wanner’s wife, Cookie, and his sister-in-law Ruth Wanner, a church deacon. Pequea Presbyterian Church is located at 273 Cambridge Road, Gap. Those who are interested in obtaining free food are asked to contact the church at 717-768-3324 or pequeapres1724@gmail .com. Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States,

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024

save your community and your country.

Sincerely,

pointing out a location along the sidelines at about the 25-yard line. Thirty minutes into the event, the line of children and parents waiting to pick a free book extended to the middle of the field. Eckert said about 150 students had preregistered for the event, which involved 70 athletes and 30 other volunteers. High school student-athletes at the stations paused to read aloud to children during a reading break, which was held for 10 minutes, but the athletes also read to children at other random intervals.

“It’s a beautiful evening, and the parking lots are full,” noted John Trovato, PVHS principal.

Rich Eby, PVSD superintendent, took to the field with microphone in hand to welcome attendees. Eby said

encouraging the presence of books and reading activities in area homes is crucial to the district’s long-term literacy goal of having 90% of local children reading by third grade and reading proficiently by fourth grade. “Kids who aren’t reading proficiently by fourth grade are four times more likely to drop out of school and 10 times more likely to live in poverty,” he noted. Eby reported that he had recently presented to the PVSD board how critical this goal is, adding that getting families of preschoolers interested in literacy is integral to the plan. “Ninety percent of the brain is developed by the age of 5,” he explained pointing out that nationally only six of 10 parents read to their children each night. “(The presence of) books in the home and the vocabulary

(children) hear has a lot to do with development,” Eby stated. “(Read Under the Lights) is to celebrate literacy and foster family engagement in literacy with their children.”

While the gift of literacy may be a reward in itself, Eckert noted that each child and parent in attendance received three tickets

for door prizes donated by community members. Among the more than 20 prizes displayed on tables near one of the goal posts were gift cards, day passes to Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, a Christmas health basket, and several baskets of fall décor items.

Jan Getz, past president of American Legion Auxiliary Post 662, knows a great deal about the organization, but it is when she talks about the ways the group gives back that the excitement in her voice can be heard. “We support programs at the Coatesville and Lebanon VA medical centers,” she said.

On Oct. 12, the auxiliary held an anniversary celebration at the New Holland American Legion Conestoga Post 662 banquet center. The centennial began at 4 p.m. with a social hour. The program started at 5 p.m. with dinner and speakers, who included Tim Bender, mayor of New Holland, and Rep. Keith Greiner of the 43rd District.

According to Getz, most of the auxiliary members who took part in planning the centennial celebra tion are surviving past presidents. Members of the committee included Getz, Sandy Beyers, Paula Houck, Michel Hughes, and Sue Noll. Current auxiliary officers are president Sheila Barber, first vice president Linda Buchanan, secretary Ann Brill, treasurer Dale Men denhall, chaplain Autumn Berrier, sergeant at arms DeeDee Martin, and his torian Heather Stern.

Getz detailed some of the activities the auxiliary organizes that involve the VA medical centers. “We participate in the country fair at the Lebanon hospi tal,” said Getz. “We do a bingo pizza party for the guys up there, and we do holiday boxes with treats in them.” Locally, Getz noted that the organiza tion helps with a homeless veterans effort run by the American Legion.

Fulton Forward Foundation, an independent, nonprofit private foundation funded by Fulton Bank, recently presented a $250,000 grant to the Tec Centro Workforce Network, a coalition of community advocates, public officials, philanthropic leaders and business professionals serving central Pennsylvania.

The funding, which will be distributed over the next five years, will support Tec Centro Workforce Network’s expansion of regional workforce development centers in the area, including new curriculum and equipment for each training center. The Network is focused on creating job training and workforce development opportunities across Tec Centro organizations in Lancaster, York, Lebanon and Berks counties, in addition to the establishment of a new Tec Centro in Harrisburg this year.

In collaboration with area community colleges

and training programs, Tec Centro provides skilled training that will lead to careers in high-demand areas, including allied health occupations, construction trades, culinary arts, commercial and industrial building maintenance and bank teller/customer service representatives. For more information, visit www.teccentroregional network.com.

Participants in the check presentation were (from left) Kristi Heller, Fulton Bank; Maribel Torres, Lebanon WEPA Empowerment Center; Carlos Graupera, Tec Centro; Rafael Torres, Lebanon WEPA Empowerment Center; and Jill Fidler, Fulton Bank.
