PVHS To Present “Radium Girls”

JFS To Show Free Film On Warsaw Ghetto

By Ann Mead Ash

By Ann Mead Ash

Alicia Trescavage, director of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) fall production of “Radium Girls,” did an extensive search, reading both the play and the book multiple times, before choosing the historical drama. “I wanted a play with a lot of strong female parts, and … this story really struck me,” said Trescavage. “Radium Girls,” by D.W. Gregory and based on the lawsuit that changed employment history, will be presented at the school, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, at 7 p.m. Set in 1926, when radium, which had been discovered by Madame Curie, was being used in a variety ways, the play See “Radium Girls” pg 6

“This story is powerful because it speaks of people in the Warsaw Ghetto and how they clearly saw what their future was like,” said Bob Ruder. Ruder further explained that Jewish Family Services (JFS) was bringing “Who Will Write Our History,” a film written and directed by Roberta Grossman and executive produced by Nancy Spielberg, to Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Monday, Nov. 11, as a follow-up to the group’s 2018 showing of “GI Jew.” Showings will be at 2 and 7 p.m. According to Ruder, the film goes back and forth in time, interspersing footage from World War II with present-day actors and actresses. “You go from modern to archival, so you have See Free Film pg 7

FREEDOM FROM VARICOSE VEINS

A church so stuck in its ways that only news of the new pastor’s impending death can get its members to change - if that story sounds familiar, it is because it is. “This is the fourth time we’re doing it,” said Doreen Creighton, founder of Promise Players, a Christian theater group, and director of the group’s next production, “Don’t Kick the Turkeys.” “It’s our most requested play.” The story is also reminiscent of real-life churches that struggle with loyalty to tradition and a reluctance to change. “We love our church. Everything is wonderful,” quipped Tim Strawser, speaking as his character in the play. “The only thing that changes is the pastors,” added actor Wayne Rhinier. The play addresses a number of themes, including prejudice, control issues, jumping to conclusions, and how to help others. “I’ve heard a pastor say he could do four sermons on the play alone,” said actor Ken Hess. Although there is a serious message in the play, it addresses problems in the church in a humorous way. “It’s a little over the top with some of the characters, but not too far,” Creighton commented. “It is just a funny play.” Promise Players presented

“Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” which was written by Andy and Jennifer Hansen, in 2001, 2004, and 2011. Many of the actors in the upcoming production also appeared in the previous productions. Reflecting on the contrasts between the 2001 and 2019 productions, actress Julie Beittel remarked, “(My character) is really different. The first time, I played her as a caricature, but now she’s more real. I see ways that I’m like her.” “We were in our 30s or 40s then,” Strawser said of the first production. “Now, (the play) will speak a little louder because we are (the age of) the people who control the church.” Creighton suggested that along with age and maturity has come a deeper understanding of issues that arise in churches. “We’re human, and that’s where we need the grace of God,” she said. “Everyone has been through something in their life (and that may be) the reason why they act the way they do,” said actress Nancy Snyder. “We only see the tip of the iceberg.” Presenting the play and its valuable message is a service to churchgoers, as it will hopefully inspire them to be thoughtful about their own congregations. “It means more to us,” Hess remarked. “I look at past shows as (just) a show and this one as a ministry.” Promise Players, a nonprofit

Promise Players will present “Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” a comedy about a church community, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren on Nov. 1 to 3 and 7 to 10. theater group, is starting its 25th season. “I think God has really blessed it,” Creighton said. “I could tell so many stories of how God provided the actors we needed for each show.” Audiences have been generous in their support, as well. Since the beginning, the suggested donations for admission have been given to a charity related in some way to the respective productions, for a total of more than $224,000 in 24 years. For “Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg was selected as the beneficiary as there is a child in the cast. “That’s one of the things I like about

(Promise Players),” said actress Laura Scott-Wise. “We talk about helping others in the play, and we get to help (the clinic).” The play will be presented at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1; at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 2 and 9; at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays, Nov. 3 and 10; and at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 7 and 8. Child care for preschoolers will be provided at all shows. Tickets may be reserved by visiting www.lampcob.com/promise-players or calling the church at 717464-2050 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

PV Gridders Battle Ephrata on the Road by Ara Grigorian

Pequea Valley’s football team squared off against Ephrata in a Lancaster-Lebanon League road game on Friday, October 18 - a week after their Section Three clash with Elco at home. With the loss to Ephrata, the Braves fell to 0-9 (0-8 in league) while the Mountaineers improved to 5-4 (5-3) with the 56-0 victory. Antonio Lazar was the offensive leader for Pequea, rushing for 70 yards on 14 carries. The Mountaineers scored three touchdowns in each of the first two periods, including a pair of touchdown passes by Caden Keefer from inside the 20-yard line. Keefer had 114 rushing yards on seven carries while also completing eight passes for 108 yards and those two TD’s. His rushing also included two scoring plays, one a 70-yarder, while Mircale Wratto’s 50-yard dash to the Pequea end zone was Photo by Stef Supplee Photo by Stef Supplee the second-longest The Braves’ Seth Gray battles Mountaineer blocker Tyler Nelson along the line of scrimmage in Pequea Valley’s 56-0, Section John Carter returns a kick for the Braves during their 56-0, Sec- scoring play. tion Three loss at Ephrata on October 18. again involved each player in a relatively small roster giving it all they had. “We dressed 22 kids in our first game,” noted Jeff Werner, who previously coached at Ephrata. “We started the season with a lot of inexperience - only four or five players with varsity experience. Most of the kids were first-year sophomores or juniors. “As the season progresses, the kids have been getting comfortable with our system,” he added. “The kids play hard the entire game.”

MOPC from pg 1 Ten vendors will sell an array of items, including amigurumi (crocheted animals and other characters), cards and stationery, homemade jellies, home décor, and wooden decorations. Crocheted, quilted, and sewn items will be available as well. Door prizes will be awarded every halfhour, with the prizes donated by vendors in lieu of paying a fee to participate. A crafting supplies room will be new this year. MOPW member Nancy Harnish explained its origin, familiar to many a crafter. “Marlene (Fromm) and I bought a bunch (of supplies) at a sale for dirt cheap, and we had grandiose ideas, but we never got around to it,” she said. The kitchen will offer Middle Octorara Muffins - breakfast sandwiches containing bacon, eggs, and cheese - to start the day. The lunch menu will include an assortment of soups, beef barbecue, and hot dogs. Soft pretzels will return for the second year, as they went over well last year, said MOPW member Shirley Miller. The group will try adding turkey barbecue to the menu this year as a way to use the leftover meat from the turkey supper held earlier this month. Miller noted that although 400 people were served at the dinner, the unexpected boon of receiving boneless meat from a new supplier resulted in more net meat than expected. There will also be a baked goods table with cookies, cakes, pies, and other sweet treats, including peanut butter balls. “Boy, people go (wild) for those things,” Miller said of the nutty delights. Proceeds from the bazaar will be used by the MOPW to support local missions. For more information about the

event, readers may call Miller at 717-786-3690. MOPC will once again serve as a drop-off center for Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts. The church will be open to receive the boxes from 8 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18; from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 19 and 20; from 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21; from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22; from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 23; from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24; and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25. The gifts will be taken to the collection center in Baltimore, where they will be checked to ensure the contents fit the criteria listed at www.samaritanspurse.org/occ, and then shipped to churches around the world, where they will be distributed throughout the year at special events. “Local pastors follow up with the children,” drop-off center coordinator Dan Henry said. “They can earn a Bible by completing ‘The Greatest Gift’ study.” Henry noted that stories about how lives were changed through shoebox gifts and the Gospel of Jesus Christ are posted on the Operation Christmas Child website. Information about what to include in the gift boxes is also available at the site. Additionally, readers may mark their calendars now for the MOPC candlelight Christmas Eve service, which will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. Caroling to homebound people will also be held in December, and details will be announced later. Individuals who have questions about the drop-off center or December events may call MOPC at 717-786-3402.

Crafter’s Bazaar from pg 1

R049563

By Ann Mead Ash

Jo Miller, who is co-chairing the Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church (BIHUMC) Crafter’s Bazaar with Audrey Miller, is impressed with the creations of the approximately 20 crafters who will have stands at the event. “We have a really nice selection of items,” said Jo, who noted that the organizers will have displays as well. BIHUMC’s first Crafter’s Bazaar will be held at the church, 2620 Old Philadelphia Pike, Birdin-Hand, on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to crafts, the event will include food, gently used Christmas items, gift baskets, holiday craft items, and a baked goods table. Among the many craft items

that will be available for purchase will be decorative snowmen, birdseed wreaths, handpoured palm wax candles, organic beauty products, handmade jewelry, and watercolor paintings. Other vendors will offer handmade cards and paper crafts, wool penny rugs, wall hangings, novelties, sewn dolls and animals, primitive décor, hand-painted slates and wood crafts, and fraktur prints. Food items that vendors will sell will include candy, cookies, and fudge. Treats for animals, including dogs, cats, and horses, will also be available for purchase. Jo, who is known as the “pillow lady,” said that Pillows with a Mission will be at the event. “All the profits from the pillows purchase school supplies for bags we

make and fill for Mennonite Central Committee,” Jo explained. Weather permitting, Olivia’s Flower Truck will be outside the church. “(The truck) goes to local farmers markets and special events,” Audrey explained, noting that the truck features all fresh flowers. “You may choose your own bouquet, and she will help you arrange them,” said Audrey. Organizers plan to sell lunch items, including ham and cheese or turkey pretzel sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and beverages. No soup will be sold at this year’s event. Funds raised by the bazaar will be contributed to outreach mission projects supported by the church women’s group. Among the beneficiaries are Clare House in Lancaster and the Conestoga

Valley Christian Community Services Weekend Blessings food program. Jo explained that organizers also work with GAiN by making LuoPads, which are sent to women in need all over the world. “GAiN will have a display at the event,” said Jo. Readers who have questions about the fundraiser may call 717-397-3047 and leave a message for a return call.

this intense play.” Other challenges of the show are that the set is minimal and many of the cast members play more than one character. “(There are challenges in) placement and lighting of scenes to make it look like a different area, and we are reusing a lot of the same (props) and putting them in different areas,” said Trescavage.

Both Trescavage and Strenck are impressed with the bravery of the young women who sought justice at a pivotal time. “It was empowering for women at that time,” said Strenck. Readers who would like to see the show may purchase tickets at the door each night. Tickets will be discounted for area school students and seniors.

As Grace, Strenck is facing the challenges of relating to a character who began working full time in her teenage years and died as a result of her work. “(Grace) is incredible. She’s really strong … determined. She’s not going to back down,” Strenck said. Faced with displaying emotions of which she has no experience, Strenck is working hard to develop the character. “I want to do her justice,” she said. Because of the heavy subject matter, Trescavage noted that there are challenges in the flow of the action. “It’s a longer show with some lighter moments,” she said. “The scenes between Grace and her boyfriend (Tom Kreider, played by Noah Stoltzfus) have humor.” Strenck agreed, noting that the scenes between Grace and Tom are among her favorites. “I am having the most fun with the banter between (Grace and her) boyfriend,” said Strenck. “That brings a lot of comedic relief to

focuses on young women who are working as painters of luminous watch dials. When the young ladies begin to display symptoms of a mysterious disease, the workers are pitted against the owners and administrators of U.S. Radium Corporation. The play pays homage to the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter played by Faith Strenck, who worked to bring the company to justice. Grace’s chief adversary is Arthur Roeder, played by Colton Mann. Roeder, president of U.S. Radium, finds it hard to believe that Curie’s miraculous discovery could cause the illnesses affecting his employees. Trescavage said she liked the story because it chronicles a breakthrough in justice for those harmed on the job. “In the play, at some point (the company administration) knows (the truth about radium) and chooses to hide it,” she said. “With great discovery comes great responsibility.” Several of the 21 cast members play people who were part of the actual events, bringing an extra element to character development. Although the students, a mix of new actors and PVHS stage veterans, had not heard of the play, many have taken the time to research the story. “It’s a learning experience for them,” said Trescavage. “I like to give students an opportunity to (explore) their characters.”

to pay attention,â€? said Ruder. “It’s powerful. It’s something that ‌ the community will find informative and educational. There are some lessons we should never forget.â€? The film tells the story of historian Emanuel Ringelblum, who led a group of journalists and others who were among the more than 400,000 people trapped in the Warsaw Ghetto by Nazis in 1940. The group determined to keep journals that would tell their story to the people who would come after them. “(The group) journaled and put their journals in tin cans in the basement of a house and covered (them) safely,â€? said Ruder, who noted that most of those living in the ghetto were exterminated by the Nazis. “People came back and dug through the ruins, and they found these documents hidden away,â€? he said. “(The journals) were a thorough and comprehensive description of the events that took place in the ghetto.â€? Ruder explained that JFS of Lancaster is a charitable organization in keeping with Jewish values. The organization helps those in need of food or housing. “We also provide gift cards to grocery stores for people,â€? said Ruder, who added that JFS also keeps a durable medical equipment loan closet. “If people are in need of walkers or wheelchairs or shower chairs, crutches, and canes, they can call us and pick out the item, and it’s theirs to use as long as they want with no strings attached,â€? said Ruder. The organization is nonprofit, nondenominational, and nonsectarian. “We help everybody,â€? said Ruder. In recent years, JFS expanded its mission to include programs that members believed would interest the greater community. “ We have done programs having to do with discrimination and with special needs children in schools ‌ diversity ‌ anti-Semitism ‌ and hate,â€? said Ruder. For Veterans Day 2018, the group decided to offer a free movie. “‘GI Jews’ gives you goosebumps,â€? said Ruder. “It was very moving and well received by the community.â€? Because of the positive response to the film, JFS decided to offer another film this Veterans Day. JFS is grateful to the Jewish Community Alliance of Lancaster for support of the program. Dr. Jack Fischel, founder of the Holocaust Conference at Millersville University, will speak briefly prior to the 2 p.m. showing of the film. According to Ruder, the theater holds 125 attendees. He said that organizers hope to fill the venue for both showings. Although it is free to attend the film, it is necessary to reserve tickets beforehand at www.jfslancaster.org/who-will -write-our-history.html.

food items on the menu will represent a number of countries where church members have roots, including Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Cuba, and Boliva. Other countries that may also be represented include Jamaica and Iraq. Garcia described two of the dishes that will be served. “One unique plate is tacos machaca from Mexico, which is made with beef and served

with potatoes in a corn-based tortilla, said Garcia. Pupusa, a dish from El Salvador made with ground pork in a corn tortilla, will also be served. Beverages will include horchata, made with rice milk, and a tart beverage called tamarindo. A variety of desserts from other countries are generally served at the meal, as well. Garcia noted that this year’s meal will benefit renovations to

the church parking lot, a project that the church has been completing in segments over the past two years. Funds raised by the meal will help to fund part two of the project. There is a per-person price to attend the event. Children age 4 and under will be admitted free, and the price of admission for children ages 5 to 11 will be discounted. Author To Discuss Book On Bowery Mission Community members may interact with author Jason Storbakken as he presents his new book, “Bowery Mission: Grit and Grace on Manhattan’s Oldest Street,” on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at Groffdale Mennonite Church, 168 N. Groffdale Road, West Earl Township. In the 19th century, the Bowery was one of New York City’s most notorious streets, a magnet for gangsters, hucksters, and hobos. Despite sweeping changes, it is still all too often the end of the road for troubled war veterans, drug addicts, the mentally ill, the formerly incarcerated, and others generally down on their luck. Against this backdrop, for 140 years, Christians have been coming together at the Bowery Mission to offer hearty meals, hot showers, clean beds, warm clothes, and the help homeless individuals need to get off the streets and back on their feet. In the new book, Storbakken, a recent Bowery director, retraces that colorful history of the area and profiles some of the illustrious and infamous characters who have made the Bowery Mission an iconic New York institution. The book offers a lens through which to better understand the changing faces of homelessness, of American Christianity, and of New York City itself. The author will be signing books at the event.

Accessible Voting Machine Features Introduced VisionCorps clients experiencing low vision and blindness were introduced to new, accessible features of Lancaster County voting machines ahead of the upcoming election. During a recent support group meeting for individuals experiencing vision loss, Randall Wenger of the Lancaster County Board of Elections and Registration demonstrated new key features that are designed to improve the voting experience for individuals living with low vision or blindness. Lancaster is known as the first Pennsylvania county to use the most recent voting system, though it has been available in other areas of the country.

The new system includes features like changing colors (color, black and white, or inverted black and white), varying text sizes, Braille keys, and headphones. The system gives the user audio cues throughout the entire ballot navigation process and includes three wheels on the controller (move, select, or get help), each with Braille beneath it to help indicate what it does. Users will also be able to review an audible summary of the ballot at the end of the process. Poll workers will be trained on the new system to ensure voters receive the guidance they may need. Sample ballots will be available online prior to the election at www.co.lancaster.pa.us/elections.

Lancaster County voting machines will be equipped with new, accessible features during the upcoming election. VisionCorps clients were recently introduced to these features.

Dayspring To Tell Pilgrims’ Story Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present “Thanksgiving Exposed: The True Story of the Pilgrims” on Friday, Nov. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guests will select a specific time for a tour that will take approximately one hour. Drawn from primary sources, “Thanksgiving Exposed” is a live reenactment of the history of the Pilgrims. The guided tours will take guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ as the focal point for all of history. Guests will then learn about the Magna Carta, the Bible’s translation into English by John Wycliffe, and the Gutenberg Press. “Thanksgiving Exposed” will include a replica of the Wittenberg doors that guests will step through to move into an area focused on the Reformation. After learning about persecution in England and the rise of the Separatists, guests will visit six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. The stations will tell the Pilgrims’ story from their beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland and their voyage to the New World. Finally, guests will learn about how the Pilgrims created their own model of self-government. Dayspring first offered Thanksgiving Exposed in 2002, when the school was located in Lancaster. “Thanksgiving Exposed” is free and open to the public, but reservations are required, and the event is expected to fill. To register, readers may visit www.dayspringchristian.com or call 717-285-2000. Separate from the “Thanksgiving Exposed” event, Dayspring Christian Academy’s Class of 2021 will hold a dinner and soup sale on Nov. 22 across the street from Dayspring at the Mountville Church of the Brethren Church, 60 Clay St. Proceeds will go toward the Class of 2021’s senior class field study to Israel. All dinners and soups may be purchased by visiting the aforementioned website and clicking on the “Thanksgiving Exposed” image. For information on “Thanksgiving Exposed” or the dinner, readers may call Dayspring or visit the aforementioned website.

SRM Fundraiser Will Feature Ambassador United States, where he completed his GED, became a citizen, and answered God’s call to serve his people in Bor, South Sudan. A chance meeting with Lancaster’s First United Methodist Church minister Kent Kroehler, who is now retired, eventually led Guot to Lancaster, where he lived for four years. He graduated from Lancaster Bible College before moving to Wilmore, Ky., where he graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary. In addition to the SRM, Guot founded a separate nonprofit that is overseeing the purchase of land and the building of a civic and religious center in Bor. Guot has recently published his story, “The Lost Boy Is Found, A Lost Boy’s Story of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Love.” Guot and Kroehler, along with many friends from First United Methodist Church and the Lancaster area, created SRM to support the education and development of South Sudanese people. SRM is particularly interested in helping students who have been orphaned because of the civil unrest in the country and is committed to serving the promising students of South Sudan. Readers who would like more information on SRM or tickets for the Members of the board of Sudan Rebirth Ministry are planning fundraiser may visit www.Sudan the organization’s annual banquet for Nov. 8 at the First Unit- RebirthMinistry.org, call 717-725ed Methodist Church in Lancaster. The goal of the event is to specifically raise educational scholarship funds for South Sudanese students from kindergarten through college in order to prepare them to be citizens, leaders, and Christians in the world’s newest country. There is a per-person cost to attend. Lancaster organizers enjoy a special relationship with Guot, who is a “Lost Boy of Sudan,” one of thousands who escaped Sudan’s civil war, walked more than 1,000 miles across East Africa, and grew up in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. courses of The Lancaster Center for Classical Studies during the regular school year, explored tales reaching from the pre-historical Indo-European oral traditions to the 21st-century oral traditions of Appalachia. The theatrical production helped to summarize the camp week’s discoveries and provided an overview of the life of Theseus, stretching from the period before his birth to the many challenging tasks that he undertook in his life.
