Craft show will support wreath program
BY ANN MEAD ASH
On Saturday, Dec. 14, the Pequea Valley Cemeteries division of the Wreaths Across America program will lay more than 2,800 wreaths on the graves of veterans in 28 Octorara- and Pequea Valley-area cemeteries.
To foot the bill for all those wreaths, which is fast approaching $50,000 a year, the organization holds a number of annual fundraisers, including a bingo and golf outing. This year, for the first time, a craft and vendor show will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Gap Fire Company, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap.
“It’s our first year, but we are hoping to make it annual,” said Deb Plum, who is working with Paula Diem to organize the event. Plum first suggested the event to Diem, noting, “I said it might be fun to do.” Plum, who has now gathered more than 20 crafters and vendors to take part in the event, added, “It’s going over well.”
Among the vendors Plum has lined up are those selling packaged food items and cooking gear, along with crafters making crocheted items or working with glass or wood. Candles, pumpkin rolls, and chocolate-covered foods will be among the items offered for sale, along with dried flowers, jewelry, and clothing. Diem noted that a few young entrepreneurs will be selling their wares at the show.
“They will share a space,” said Plum of the two brothers who make dog treats to sell and the young lady who creates beaded pens.
Prizes and giveaways will also be part of the event. “Vendors will each donate an item to be (given away),” said Plum. Diem added that fall and Christmas décor items will also be among the prizes.
Hungry attendees will find a variety of food items prepared and sold by the Gap Fire Company, including breakfast sandwiches, lunch items, and beverages.
Wreaths Across America places wreaths on the graves of
veterans every holiday season to remember and honor those who served in the military and teach others, especially children, about the value of freedom. The Pequea Valley Cemeteries program will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS), 166 S. New Holland Road, Kinzers. The event will begin with a ceremony at noon, and then wreaths will be distributed to more than 300 volunteers to be placed on graves.
“We used to take a bus to Arlington every year and lay wreaths,” explained Plum, “but then we decided to do this locally.” Diem recalled that the first year the effort was held, about 1,250 wreaths were placed on local graves.
Readers who would like more information about the craft and vendor show or the area Wreaths Across America program may search for “Wreaths Across America - Pequea Valley Cemeteries” on Facebook.

Event to benefit Limeville’s Blessings
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Limeville Church, 5783 Limeville Road, Gap, will host a fall craft fair on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also featured will be a silent auction and a sale of food items.
The craft fair will be set up downstairs in the church’s fellowship hall. Crafts for sale will include leather jewelry and leather crafts, custom iced coffee cups and crocheted items.
“Someone will sell wreaths, and we have (several) crochet vendors
who make different things,” said congregation member Melanie Shivery, who is organizing the event along with Danae Baldwin. “There will be variety of handmade gifts.”
Silent auction items, which have been donated by local businesses, will include tickets to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Hands-on House in Lancaster, Dutch Lanes in Ephrata and the Turkey Hill Experience in Lancaster. “The majority of crafters also donate items for the silent auction,” noted Shivery.

Mennonite Life to host book auction
Rare and used books will be available at an auction at Mennonite Life on Nov. 8.
Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, curates rare and historically significant books and offers them for sale at three annual auctions. The next Rare and Used Book
Auction will take place in the Mennonite Life Community Room on Friday, Nov. 8, at 6:30 p.m.
Foote, member of the BLAST leadership team, attendees are divided by grades, with all preschoolers meeting in the Braves Learning Center. “It’s a small group focus for kids to play games and build relationships,” explained Burke. “But we also dive deeper into Bible stories in a fun way.” Each session of BLAST - fall, winter, and spring - has a different theme. The fall program is focused on the parables of Jesus.
she explained. “On family night, all of the stations are done together by parents and kids.”
Foote said that the program moved from Grace Point to The Factory two years ago. Foote serves along with Burke, Liana Rogers, and Lauren Petersheim. Karla Beiler, elementary programs director with The Factory, works with Grace Point to coordinate the program. All volunteers have the necessary clearances.
The full auction catalog is available for download at https://mennonitelife .org/events. Notable lots in this auction include a 1681 copy of Menno Simons’ “Opera Omnia Theologica,” an 1819 family Bible formerly belonging to Jacob Metzler (1788-1872) and Barbara Witmer (1793-1876), and “Eine Restitution, oder eine Erkl√§rung einiger Haupt-puncten des Gesetzes” (“A Restitution, or an Explanation of Some of the Main Points of the Law”), printed in 1763 and formerly belonging to John Graybill (c. 1814).
Each BLAST session begins with a large group time where a Bible story is introduced. Next, attendees move to a variety of stations, including a craft center, game time in the gym, and a snack. Preschoolers spend the whole time in the Braves Learning Center.
The final night of each session is reserved for family members to attend along with the children, and a meal is served for all attendees. “We set the gym up with stations that give (parents) a sneak peek at what we’ve been doing at BLAST,” explained Foote.
“It’s all in the gym, and they go to different stations and there’s crafts and games.”
Burke said that the final BLAST of each session is always especially fun.
“It’s not just the kids (participating) with parents standing there watching,”
Beiler said she was happy to join forces with the church to offer area children a Wednesday night program at the facility. “I love the partnership with Grace Point and to be able to host an event that the community can feel safe coming to,” she noted. “It’s a Gospel-centered program, which I really love.”
According to Burke, children who wish to attend need not be connected to The Factory, Grace Point, or any area church, and there is no cost to take part.
“Since we moved here, we have seen a lot more people who don’t go to Grace Point or The Factory (attend),” said Foote.
Readers who would like to know more about BLAST or register their children may visit https://grace pointparadise.com and click on “BLAST” under the “Ministries” tab.
Limeville’s Blessings
The silent auction will close at 1 p.m. Bidders do not have to be present to win.
Food items will include hot dogs and beef barbecue. Takeouts will be available.
“We are having iced coffee and a hot chocolate bar,” Shivery added.
All proceeds from the craft fair will support the church’s children’s ministry and the Limeville’s Blessings store, which offers free clothing, household items, children’s toys, toiletries and more to people in need. The store, which Shivery operates, opened at the church in July of 2022. Anyone in need of assistance is welcome to visit the store, and no proof of income or residency is required.
Limeville’s Blessings is currently open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“The total (number of) families helped this year is 704, which brings our (total) number up to 1,807 since opening,” Shivery reported.
People are permitted to visit the store to collect free items once per month.
Donations of gently used clothing, shoes, bedding, blankets and small kitchen appliances are also accepted during store hours. Especially needed are children’s clothing sizes preemie through 14/16.
“We are collecting new children’s toys for our annual toy giveaway. This will be my second year doing it,” said Shivery, noting that parents will be given one ticket per child to redeem
for a free toy. “People can register with how many children they have. We set up the fellowship hall as a toy store. We have a wrapping station so they can wrap the toys before they go home, and we give them big black trash bags (to hide the gifts). The parents have a good time.”
For more information about the craft fair or Limeville’s Blessings, visit www.facebook.com/ LimevillesBlessingsStore.
Crafters who would like to take part in the event can register by visiting www. limevillechurch.org and choosing “Craft Show” on the homepage. Payment for vendors who want to participate is due by Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Mennonite Life’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other’s stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.
Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County,
Ohio

Fulton Bank receives Freedom Award

Fulton Bank team members who accepted the award during a ceremony held at the Pentagon on Aug. 22 were John Glover, head of commercial banking; Lisa Johanning, director of talent management; Lisa DeCoste, senior commercial relationship manager; Natasha Luddington, chief legal officer; and Curt Myers, chief executive officer.
The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DOD) office, runs the annual award program, which has presented the
Excel Roofing

Recipients of the award include small and large private businesses and public sector employers nominated by a National Guard or Reserve employee in their organization. Award nominations are accepted from all 50 states, GuamCNMI, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and District of Columbia.
Fulton Bank is one of only 15 employers nationwide selected to receive the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award this year.
Pennsylvania Army National Guard Col. Brett Gagnon nominated the Fulton Bank for the Freedom Award for its support of his military career. In nominating the bank for the award, Gagnon stated that corporate executives, managers and co-workers all sent cards, letters and
other items to him and unit members during his most recent deployment. Bank personnel also maintained contact with his family, providing gift cards and support to his wife and children.
Fulton Bank also provides benefits to Guard and Reserve members. Deployed service members receive 52 weeks of differential pay while maintaining family health, retirement and investment benefits.
The bank’s nomination was selected from the 30 nationwide finalists.
Numerous Fulton Bank supervisors have received a Patriot Award, Seven Seals Award and Above and Beyond Awards. They have also attended an ESGR Boss Lift event and awards luncheon for which they received a
Pennsylvania ESGR Certificate of Support. ESGR exists to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DOD.

Conservancy announces expansion of Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
In 2020, nature preserves, hiking trails and state parks across the United States saw a massive increase in visitors as Americans sought activities that were unaffected by COVID-19 safety restrictions. Outdoor escapes offered an alternative to social gatherings and indoor events that were temporarily placed on hold, and many people found refuge in nature. Lancaster County is rife with lush parks and scenic hiking trails, but Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve in Holtwood became one of the most popular destinations for stir-crazy local residents to escape to. Four years later, Lancaster Conservancy has announced an expansion project that will increase the size of the park by 43 acres.
After the expansion, Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve will encompass more than 500 acres. The acquisition includes an additional quarter mile of Kelly’s Run Stream and a portion of forested land. The additional acreage will serve as a buffer between adjacent farmland and the waterway, as well as a sanctuary for human recreation and a vital habitat for local wildlife. The nature preserve currently includes a pollinator meadow, verdant woodlands and a glen populated with native rhododendrons.
“We’re always looking at what’s adjacent to our nature preserves when starting a new project. We want to make sure we can connect them to the landscape and other preserves, protecting as many water resources as we can,” said Kathie Gonick, Lancaster Conservancy’s senior vice president of land protection and general counsel. “Kelly’s Run is a beautiful stream. This buffer of forest will keep it clean and clear, as well as a better habitat for creatures.”
During the surge of visitors during the pandemic, Gonick said she and other Lancaster Conservancy staff members would frequently volunteer to spend their weekends at Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve, offering information to hikers and answering questions. Gonick added that the preserve’s proximity to Pinnacle Scenic Overlook Nature Preserve, in addition to its scenic vistas and conveniently accessible

parking lot, contribute to the popularity of Kelly’s Run. Pinnacle Scenic Overlook became part of the Susquehannock State Park two years ago, after Lancaster Conservancy transferred stewardship of the property to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Now that the expansion project at Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve is officially underway, Lancaster Conservancy will proceed with its next phase, which will entail thorough documentation of the property and research on its natural resources prior
to the acquisition. Once the property is acquired, the conservancy’s stewardship department will start developing a plan to ensure that the addition can seamlessly integrate with the existing land. Lancaster Conservancy estimates that the project will take a few years to complete.
