Project Activate Moves Forward In Paradise Community Members Join Local Team To Share Ideas By Ann Mead Ash

Several months ago, the Lancaster County Community Foundation chose two areas in which to pilot Project Activate, a program designed to bring about positive change by building a more inclusive community. Southeast Lancaster city and Paradise were selected as pilot areas. The Paradise design team began meeting at the Together Community Center (TCC), home of The Factory Ministries, in September. After completing two days of training and a number of weeks of research, the design team held a Community Idea Gathering at TCC, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Nov. 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the event,

members of the community joined the team to share suggestions about ways to resolve nine issues facing the area. Issues were presented on boards arranged in the TCC gym area. Each board featured an idea prompt, an insight into the problem, a question about how the problem might be solved, and stories from the research that design team members had completed. Issues were divided into groups. One group spotlighted problems with a lack of affordable housing in the area, such as the need to increase awareness among area residents about how to offer affordable housing, trust issues between landlords and potential renters, and financial issues surrounding the development of affordable housing. Another group highlighted issues often faced by seniors, such as transportation, isolation, and communication. A t h i r d a r e a f o c u s e d on See Project Activate pg 2

Back To Bird-In-Hand New Pastor Serves In Area He Loves

Larry Dunlap, who became pastor of Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church (BIHUMC) on July 1, was familiar with Route 340 in the Conestoga Valley area of Lancaster County. “My wife and I vacationed here every year,” said Dunlap. “ We loved the area.” According to Dunlap, he and his wife, Kathy, would pass BIHUMC, and she would say, “Is there any way you could be appointed to that church?” It was not possible at the time, but after Kathy died of cancer in 2015, Dunlap moved to East Petersburg and began attending Lampeter United See BIHUMC pg 9

Kim Shorter (right), of the Lancaster County Community Foundation, points out a piece of information to Paradise resident Rich Glass (left) during the Project Activate Community Idea Gathering on Nov. 2. The next community gathering will be held on Jan. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Together Community Center in Paradise.

Free Movie Night Will Focus On Adoption By Ann Mead Ash

By Ann Mead Ash

After many years of visiting Bird-in-Hand on vacation, Larry Dunlap has returned there as pastor of Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church. Dunlap, who began pastoring the church in July, makes his home in East Petersburg.

Brenda Long, a foster care and adoption supervisor with Bethanna in Lancaster, would like to see county residents broaden their concept of adoption. “Sometimes people think adoption is only for infants and young children, but we want people to know there are a lot of children age 10 and older looking for loving homes,” said Long. Long and other staff members of local adoption organizations who have gathered under the ACLC (Adoption Coalition of Lancaster County) banner hope to change ideas about adoption by See Free Movie pg 5

Representatives of area adoption agencies that belong to the Adoption Coalition of Lancaster County are planning a free movie event at Penn Cinema on Nov. 26 to put the spotlight on fostering to adopt.

disseminating information in the area. Display boards were dedicated to communication methods, a lack of places to gather, and how community members are marginalized when they are not informed about upcoming events. On a table beside each board, attendees could write their own ideas about how issues might be resolved. Before the design team met with area residents who attended, Aaron Spangler, communications manager with the Community Foundation, advised the team to encourage attendees to share their ideas. “We are not looking for confirmation of what we think,” he said. “We want to know what they think.” Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of the Community Foundation, agreed. “The idea is to give the community a chance to be engaged so we can build shared ownership,” Cutler noted.

A number of area residents attended the event, where they had opportunities to vote on ideas that had been presented as well as make their own suggestions. Adam Nagle, who became director of The Factory Ministries over the summer, took time out from his Saturday to attend. “This is awesome,” said Nagle, after having completed the circuit of display boards. “It’s really cool to see the issues that are legitimate barriers to sustainable community and to see them surface with people who live in the community and have (members of the public here) to engage with this.” Nagle noted that Project Activate is welcome in the area because it raises grassroots-level awareness of issues Paradise residents face. The Paradise Project Activate design group compiled the ideas that were gathered during the event and began the work of moving forward to the next phase. The dozen team members, who include people who live and work in Paradise, will hold another event to share progress and gather community input at TCC on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Teresa Laudo’s class from Pequea Valley High School recently went on the Underground Railroad walking tour. The two-hour tour included 10 different stops. It highlighted the buildings used on the Underground Railroad, individuals who helped the cause, and the local community of businesses and churches that supported people seeking freedom. One of the main highlights was learning about Thaddeus Stevens, as students learned about his past, his connections to Lancaster County, and his contributions to equality and civil rights. Local historian Randy Harris served as the tour guide. The second stop was the Lancaster

Free Movie from pg 1 holding a special event during November, which is National Adoption Awareness Month. As they have for nearly a decade, members of the group have arranged for a free movie showing, which will take place at Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Registration will begin at 5:45 p.m., and the movie will start at 6:30 p.m. Free tickets and popcorn will be available while supplies last. This year’s movie will be “Frozen 2, which will be released a few days prior to the event. The movie, an animated musical, follows the story of two sisters, Elsa, the Snow Queen, and Anna, as they leave their kingdom of Arendelle for a faraway adventure. Friends Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven return to take part in the sisters’ journey. Staff members from agencies that are part of the coalition will be at the ACLC booth to answer questions, and SWAN, the Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network, will also have a booth at the event. “We are available that evening to talk to attendees, said Long, who added that she expects to hear a lot of questions from those interested in learning more about adoption. According to Brooke May of Families United Network, more than 400 children in Lancaster County may be in foster care at any one time. “We want families to understand that adopting through foster care is not expensive, said Kim Miller of Pressley Ridge. “Not all kinds of adoption come with a high cost. Long noted that the organization would like to break stereotypes about what types of families can adopt. “We need all types of families, she noted. “If they love children and are willing to learn how to parent children who come from hard places (they could help), she said, mentioning that single parents or parents who have already raised their biological children may be good candidates. Local organizations that are part of ACLC include Bethanna, Bethany Christian Services, Children’s Home of York/Children’s Home of Reading, COBYS Family Services, Community Services Group, Families United Network, Pressley Ridge, and Lancaster County Children and Youth Social Service Agency. It is not necessary to register prior to the event. Readers who would like more information may call SWAN at 800-585-SWAN.

Team, consisting of fifth- and sixthgraders, organized a “SOCKtober drive. The students set a goal to collect 300 pairs of socks that would be donated to families in need. Participants surpassed this goal and collected 377 pairs of socks, which were to be donated to the Together Community Center and other organizations that support families in the Lancaster County area.

Tel Hai Camp invites local residents to “burn calories, not your turkey” during the annual Turkey Bowl to be held on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 28. The event will feature a 5K race and a 1-mile fun run for children. “This is our 28th year for the race, and we are looking forward to another great year,” said Bruce Gregory, camp director. The 5K (3.1-mile) cross-country race will take runners through the camp and around the lake. The course includes paved, gravel and grassy paths. While the course is primarily level, there are a few

hills for runners to tackle. The 1-mile children’s fun run for youths age 12 and under will take place on main grounds of the camp. Parents may run alongside their children at no charge. Registration and race packet pickup will be held from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m. on Nov. 28 in the camp’s dining hall. The fun run will begin at 9:10 a.m., followed by the 5K race at 9:40 a.m. All children who complete the fun run will receive a finishers’ medal. First-place trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male runners of the 5K. Medals will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups. To register, readers may visit www.telhaicamp.org/events/turkey -bowl-run. Online registration will end on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Participants may

also print a registration form from the website and mail it to the camp, along with the registration fee. Gregory reported that last year there were 429 total participants. The top overall male winner was Ben Zook of Gordonville, with a time of 18 minutes, 10 seconds. The top overall female winner was Traci Tempone of Lancaster, with a time of 20:52. “We had 38 finishers in the 1-mile fun run and 353 finishers in the 5K race,” he said, noting that the 5K will be professional timed. Gregory and the other race organizers are hoping for good weather this year. “Thanksgiving is a week later this year, so hopefully it won’t be colder than last year,” he noted. “We had frigid weather last year, which we think kept some runners from coming out.” Gregory said that the Thanksgiving event has become a tradition with area families. “Besides the Honey Brook area, we have runners from Downingtown, Gap, Oxford and New Holland,” he stated. Among the participants in 2018 were members of the Stratton family of Downingtown, including Rebecca and Eric and their children, Aidan, Gabe and Meredith. “I have been doing the Turkey Bowl since 2014; it was my first 5K,” Rebecca reported. “My family started doing it with me in 2015. My daughter does the fun run, and last year my husband joined me and my two (sons) for the first time in the 5K.” Rebecca said the event is ideal for local families. “It is something that I do, and everyone saw how much fun it was, and they joined me,” she said, adding, “We live in Guthriesville, so it’s not too

far and our kids take homeschool classes there. “I cook the turkey and we head off,” she added. “It is a tradition, and my kids said they wouldn’t miss it for the world.” As in previous years, all participants at the Turkey Bowl will be cheered on by the Tel Hai turkey mascot. “The turkey wishes to remain anonymous. He’ll be back this year and wants to keep the mystery of his identity going,” said Gregory. The Thanksgiving Day run was started in 1992 by former camp program director Buzz Tyson, who is now director of the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford. The Turkey Bowl is sponsored by local businesses. The sponsors are listed at the event website. Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp and Retreat, a nonprofit Christian camp that is a member of the Christian Camping and Conference Association. The camp is located along Beaver Dam Road, 1.5 miles east of Route 10. The GPS address is 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook. For more information, readers may contact Gregory at 610273-3969 or bruce@telhaicamp.org or visit the website. Pictured on front:

The ELANCO Ministerium Community Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held at St. John’s Center United Church of Christ, 432 Reading Road, East Earl, on Wednesday, Nov. 27, beginning at 7 p.m. Ken Evitts, pastor of St. John Center United Church of Christ and ministerium president, will open the service. The speaker for the evening will be the Rev. Shane Symolon, pastor of Pine Grove Church, Bowmansville. Dawn Ranck-Hower, pastor of New Holland Mennonite; Jack Peters, pastor of New Holland Baptist; and Kris Poontajak of Cedar Grove Church will also take part in the service, along with other members of the ministerium. As in the past, the offering will benefit a local ministry. This year, CrossNet’s Housing Initiative, which provides safe and affordable housing to ELANCO-area individuals, families, seniors, and veterans who are experiencing or are about to experience homelessness, will be the beneficiary.

nity should have a safe and affordable place to live. The housing program now has two new apartments located near Petra Church, for a total of three apartments. “We are planning for six additional units in April 2020,” said Dahl, who added that the ministry is pleased to be the beneficiary of the offering at the Thanksgiving service. “It is an honor to partner with the ministerium and our local churches to address those experiencing homelessness in ELANCO,” she said. “I am thankful for their willingness to support (this initiative) and make an impact.” In addition, those who attend are invited to bring food items to support the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center. Food items that are needed by the Food and Nutrition Center include canned fruit, pancake mix, pancake syrup, canned pasta, spaghetti sauce, jelly, canned meats, stuffing mix, and boxed potatoes. Personal care items that may be donated include shampoo and deodorant. In the case of inclement weather, information about the status of the service may be found at www.stjohnscenterucc.org.

Ministers in the ELANCO Ministerium have scheduled the organization’s annual Community Thanksgiving Eve Service at St. John’s Center United Church of Christ on Nov. 27 beginning at 7 p.m. Funds received at the service will benefit the CrossNet Housing Initiative.

Methodist Church. When the pastor position at BIHUMC opened up, Dunlap’s pastor, John Smith, asked the UMC district superintendent if Dunlap might fill it. “The district superintendent called me and asked if I would be interested in BIHUMC,” recalled Dunlap, who added that the superintendent offered to give Dunlap a day to think about the offer. “I told him I didn’t need one,” said Dunlap. “I think my wife went to the Lord and said, ‘I want you to tell the bishop to send my husband to this church.’” Dunlap first received the call to ministry in the early 1970s. “My father was a minister,” shared Dunlap. “I was helping him serve Communion, and while I was holding the tray of Communion cups, I sensed the Lord saying, ‘Larry, this is where I want you to be.’” At that time, Dunlap’s father was serving in Kings Park on Long Island. After Dunlap finished high school, he went to Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., where he majored in radio communications. Following college, he went to St. Paul School of Theology, then in Kansas City, Mo. The first church he pastored was located in Quarryville, N.Y. He met his wife there, and they married in 1981. Their first son, Chester, was born a year later, and they had two more sons, Drew and Adam. Over the years, Dunlap served congregations in a number of areas in New York and Connecticut. He also served as chaplain of the East Quogue Fire Department, organized a Meals on Wheels program, hosted “The Rock of Jesus” radio program on WRIV-AM, and raised funds for a homeless shelter, among many other activities. He is Stephen Ministry trained, and he currently volunteers at Lampeter UMC running the media board and editing the newsletter. His approach to pastoring BIHUMC is a little different than might be expected when a congregation consists of mostly retired people. “There is a train of thought in church growth that you have to go after younger families and have a strong children’s program,” said Dunlap, who believes that church growth should be tailored to the congregation. “I took a course on church growth,” said Dunlap, who took note of a case study on older churches in the course material. He said that instead of trying to attract young families, the church members in the case study focused on retired people. They planned activities that involved things retired people like to do, including taking trips, watching movies, square dancing, and shopping. “Their friends started coming, and they started inviting friends,” said Dunlap. “The church began to grow because they were attracting retired people. That’s my approach with BIHUMC.” BIHUMC is located at 2620 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Worship is held each Sunday at 9 a.m. A Bible study is held immediately following the service. More information about the church may be found at https://bihumc.com.
