When Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS) principal Arlen Mummau met Stewart Bauer, parent of a PVIS seventh-grade student, at back-to-school night in the fall, he learned that Bauer was a veteran. Recalling that several years ago PVIS held a yearly tribute on Veterans Day, Mummau turned to Christy Collins, lead administrative assistant, and asked her to organize a program for Nov. 12, the Monday after Veterans Day. “We want our (students) to not just hear (history) in class, but to hear directly from our veterans,” explained Mummau, who added that bringing community members into the schools is a priority. “It’s important to recognize that we have people right here in our community who fought for our country and were willing to sacrifice their lives,” he said. See Veterans Day pg 9

Pequea Valley Intermediate School Students wrote “dog tag” thank you cards to veterans who visited the school for the Veterans Day tribute. The event included a ceremony and opportunities for students to ask questions of local veterans.

Teacher Alicia Trescavage (left) brought her father-in-law, John, a Vietnam War veteran, and mother-in-law, Cathie, to the Veterans Day tribute held at Pequea Valley Intermediate School on Nov. 12.

World War II-era military vehicles were available for students to see in the parking lot of Pequea Valley Intermediate School as part of the Veterans Day celebration.

Leacock Holiday Bazaar Scheduled Paradise Township Lions Club

Plans Fifth Christmas Market

By Ann Mead Ash

The annual Leacock Presbyterian Church Treats ‘N Treasures Christmas Bazaar has been held for many years, but each holiday season, organizer Loretta McClarigan likes to mix things up by changing the offerings at the event. For 2018, McClarigan and fellow organizers Lois Snader and Carol Shearer have added a Fashion Corner, a Disney table, and more to the seasonal sale. This year’s bazaar will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. There will be an emphasis on Christmas trees this year, according to McClarigan. “We have more Christmas trees than we normally have, and they range from See Holiday Bazaar pg 2

Preparing for the annual Treats ‘N Treasures Christmas Bazaar are (from left) Lois Snader, Carol Shearer, and Loretta McClarigan. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Leacock Presbyterian Church from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It started a few years ago when Paradise Township Lions Club member Marie Glass had a brainstorm, suggesting an indoor winter market similar to the farmers market the Lions then held in front of the former Paradise Elementary School in the summer. Now, the school, located at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, is the Together Community Center (TCC) and home to The Factory Ministries, but it is still the site of the Lions Christmas Market, which will be held there on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission to the event is free. The fundraiser will benefit Lions Club projects. See Lions Market pg 4

Santa will be among the visitors to the Lions Christmas Market at the Together Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 1. Santa is expected to be on-site from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Along with trees, organizers have added outdoor items, such as holiday flags, to the mix. Indoor items that are new to the venue this year will include furniture pieces, such as tables, chairs, a child’s rocking chair, and a rocking horse. Additionally, as in the past, decorative items featuring Santas, angels, and snowmen will be available for purchase. Among those were an Italian sampler basket, a manicure and pedicure basket, a children’s book basket, a coffee lover’s basket, a candy lover’s basket, a music lover’s basket, and more. Clair Leaman of New Holland has conducted “Messiahâ€? SingAlong concerts for more than 20 years. Faith Hoover, director of Adult Day Services and coordinator of the Memory Loss Support Group at Landis Homes, attends the “Messiahâ€? SingAlongs. Hoover thought that if Leaman had the skills and flexibility to conduct the sing-alongs, which are performed without previous rehearsals, he might be an ideal person to conduct a concert that brings together Alzheimer’s patients who have an interest in singing. Hoover approached Leaman following a sing-along, and he agreed to conduct. The result is the “Sing for the Momentâ€? Holiday Concert, which will be held at Landis Homes in the West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend. Leaman said that the concert will include seven well-known Christmas carols such as “Joy to the World,â€? “Silent Night,â€? “Away in a Manger,â€? and “O Come, All Ye Faithful,â€? in addition to one popular show tune. “We will be singing ‌ ‘My Favorite Things,’â€? noted Leaman, who has enlisted the handbell choir from St. Stephen Reformed Church of New Holland to participate. “The handbell choir will play three or four pieces,â€? said Leaman. Choir members come with their caregivers from all around the county. Leaman said that the

caregivers also participate in the rehearsals, which are held on Wednesday mornings at Landis Homes. Leaman said that rehearsals begin with light refreshments and a social time prior to practicing the material. All choir members use the words to the songs, which have been printed in a special “Sing for the Moment choir book created for the group. “Students from Conestoga Christian School decorated the pages, said Leaman, who added that the book includes 19 musical pieces. According to Leaman, the group includes up to four tenors, a couple of basses, and some altos. Those who know their parts sing them, but no music is provided at this point. Kim Enck, a caregiver who is a choir participant with her husband, said that the weekly rehearsals are a blessing to them. “As a spouse of one living with dementia, one can understand that this disease has so changed the dynamics of our relationship, but not the love, she said. “(Choir rehearsals are) one activity, of only a few as his memory continues to diminish, that we both can enjoy in the moment. To me, (that) is huge. Shelby Swartley, a social worker with Lancaster General Health Penn Medicine Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Program, said that participating in the choir can renew family connections and have positive effects on the patients. “One of the greatest benefits of the choir is the joy that it brings both persons with dementia and their

Moores Memorial Library, 9 W. Slokum Ave., Christiana, has scheduled several special events for the weeks leading up to Christmas. For more information or to register when requested, readers may call the library at 610-593-6683. “Think Like an Engineer,” a STEM program presented by the Lancaster Science Factory, will take place on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. This children’s program was originally scheduled for earlier this month but was postponed due to the snowstorm. This presentation is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. “Light Up Christiana” will take place on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the borough of Christiana. The library will be open to provide stories and refreshments for visitors as they take a break from their trek around town, and it will also accept donations for its “hat and mitten” tree. Ongoing programs include Lego Club, which meets twice a month. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m. The Hank the Health Hero tooth brushing program will end on Monday, Dec. 10. Those who complete the challenge will win a prize. Knitters and Crocheters meet every other Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the library. The next meeting will be Dec. 5, and both experienced and novice crafters are welcome to attend. When individuals shop at http://smile.amazon.com/ch/ 23-1867436, Amazon donates to the library. Also, the Read Moore Book Store is open from 1 to 4 p.m. daily or by request any time the library is open.

Servant Stage Company will present Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” across Lancaster County, with nearly 40 performances set at local theaters, churches, retirement homes, and schools. The show’s music is directed by Johnathan Bauer and underscored by pairings of harp, cello, guitar, and penny whistle, played live at select performances by Emily Aziza and Tony Marini. First produced by Servant Stage in 2015, this original adaptation is unique in that every word is taken from Dickens’ text, bringing the holiday classic to life through the collaborative storytelling of eight performers, all playing multiple roles. Dickens’ text will be interspersed with portions of musical narration set to the tunes of classic Christmas carols with original lyrics by Jon Rider, also playing the part of Scrooge. All performances are offered as pay-what-you-will in keeping with Servant Stage’s mission to

PVPL Schedules Annual Fundraising Gala a By Ann Mead Ash

Library director Catherine O’Sullivan cannot wait to see the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL) after it is set up and decorated for the annual Tasting Gala. “This is one of our major fundraisers, and it’s beautiful,” said O’Sullivan. “The library is transformed with candlelight and tablecloths.” The 2018 event, which will be held at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, will offer attendees tastings of a variety of foods and beverages. This year’s tasting will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. A few high-top tables

offered samplings of roasted beef tenderloin with caramelized onions, blue cheese crumbles, and burgundy reduction, along with the popular creamy crab and corn chowder. “The soup is the high point,” said O’Sullivan. “That is a big (draw).” Shrimp cocktail, hoisin grilled pork tenderloin with Asian slaw, and local cheeses will also be served. This year’s dessert table will feature a variety of sweets, including chocolates donated by local businesses. Hot milk sponge cake will be brought to the venue by Sadie Ebersol, and sweet treats will be provided by a neighboring bakery. International coffees and teas

Perhaps the name Belsnickel is familiar? Maybe local residents have heard the name, but the characteristics of the Germanic character are murky. “The Belsnickel should not be confused with a jolly old Saint Nick,” noted Stephanie Celieberti, lead guide with Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. “He or she is (also) not an anti-Santa Claus.” Rather, according to Celieberti, the Belsnickel traditionally was a real person, actually a villager who disguised himself or herself with furs, bells, and soot so as not to be recognized by the children. “Every Belsnickel carried a switch and a bag full of nuts, candies, and fruits,” explained Celieberti. “Before Christmas, the Belsnickel would travel to the children’s homes in the village.” Celieberti noted that because the Belsnickel was a fellow villager, he or she knew which children were good or bad and could bring up examples of the children’s behaviors over the last year. “Bad children received a slap from the switch, and good children received some treats,” said Celieberti. Landis Valley celebrates the legend of the Belsnickel when it holds the annual Days of the Belsnickel lunch and dinner tours at the village and farm museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster. The dinner will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 5:30 to 9 p.m., and the lunch will take place on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The events, which have been celebrated for a decade at the museum, attract up to 50 people for each gathering. Each event will include a visit with the Belsnickel, who will burst into the museum’s firehouse. Playing his role with vigor, the Belsnickel will proceed to heckle the gathered guests with the goal of prompting the sounds of laughter throughout the building. Each meal will also include a tour featuring two buildings on the property. The Landis Brothers’ house is an original building that was the home of the museum’s founders, Henry and George Landis. Visitors to the house will hear a few Pennsylvania German stories. The

The Friends of the Library will hold a Holiday Book Sale, featuring new and like-new books and light refreshments, at the ELANCO Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A few steps away at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., the train room, which features a number of model railroad layouts, will be open from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Both carriage rides and hayrides will be available on Main Street from 4 to 7 p.m. Members of the Rotary Club of New Holland will assist carriage ride passengers. Hayrides will be provided by a local farm equipment manufacturer. A number of area churches will participate in the event. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Christian Fellowship Church will offer free “Jesus” crosses, Gospel wristbands, and coffee mugs of candy at 149 E. second building will be the tavern, a reconstructed representation of taverns in the late 1700s to early 1800s. At the tavern, guests will have the chance to participate in a taffy pull with the tavern keeper. In addition, a guided wagon ride will take visitors around the entire site while they sing carols. More than a meal and a tour, each event gives participants a chance to step back in time and experience activities of yesteryear. “This is a very immersive event for us, and we’ve made it even more so this year,” said Terry Kreider, coordinator of the event. “Between dancing, singing, and storytelling, we’ll treat our guests to a wonderful meal and an unforgettable experience.” According to Celieberti, period dances from the 18th and 19th centuries will be demonstrated and taught by the guides. “Since dancing was a method of socialization, guests will be encouraged to join our guides and socialize just like those in the past,” explained Celieberti. “Our guides will begin by demonstrating the dances the guests will participate in and then ask for volunteers who wish to learn the steps.” Those who wish not to participate are welcome to watch and clap along to the music. There is a fee to attend each event. The price is discounted for children age 12 and under and for Landis Valley Associates members. Funds raised by special events like Days of Belsnickel benefit the Landis Valley Associates, an organization that helps support Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. Readers who wish to attend the luncheon or dinner may make reservations online at www .landisvalleymuseum.org or call Jamie Schuring at 717-581-0590.

At 4 p.m., George and Judy Defeo will spin tunes and serve as masters of ceremonies in the minipark at Towne Centre Green. Horning noted that the pair has volunteered for the event for several years. Garden Spot Fire Rescue will bring Santa to the venue at 4:30 p.m., and Mr. Sneakers will entertain at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., Towne Centre Green will be the site of the community Christmas tree lighting, with mayor Tim Bender flipping the switch to light the community tree. Horning emphasized that volunteers work to help kick off the New Holland holiday season, and he lauded Kelly Good and Judy Bills for agreeing to co-chair the event. Meters will be covered to offer visitors free parking. For a complete list of activities, readers may visit www.Christmas onMain.com.

to show all veterans appreciation for everything they have done for the United States of America. PVIS Student Council president Tre Rosa stepped to the podium to announce the names of the veterans present in order of the length of time they served. Each veteran stood as his or her name was called. Karli Martin, PVIS concert band vice president, announced that “Marches of the Armed Forces” would be played and asked veterans to stand when they heard the hymn associated with their branch of service. Martin also made remarks on “Day is Done,” which was then played by the bugle corps. Collins again took the podium to lead a final round of applause for the veterans, who exited as the band played a number of tunes, including “Washington’s Artillery March,” “Sherman’s March,” “Yorktown,” and “Road to Boston.” Veterans attended the event for a variety of reasons. Trescavage escorted her fatherin-law, Vietnam War veteran John Trescavage, and his wife, Cathie, to the event. Nick Leto, who served in the Army for nearly 20 years, said he was there because his son attends the school. Ross Houck Jr., who has served in the Army and the Army Reserves and is now a member of the National Guard, was excited to return to the intermediate school, where he was a member of the undefeated LL Section Champions wrestling team in 1982-83. Houck is currently serving with HHC 28th Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Indiantown Gap, where he is preparing to be deployed to Iraq. In addition to the program, organizers arranged to display vintage military vehicles in the school parking lot on Nov. 12.

On Nov. 12, 22 area veterans, representing a total of more than 200 years of service, visited PVIS. The veterans were treated to a luncheon and social hour during which a group of students played the bugle call for mess hall. Following lunch, the veterans moved to the gym area, where students had assembled for a program, which opened with Brave Sounds student vocalists singing the national anthem led by teacher Alicia Trescavage. The opening was followed by Trescavage singing “God Bless America.” Collins welcomed the veterans, saying she was honored and proud to thank them for their service to the country. She told the story of her grandfather who served in Korea and how she learned from her grandmother that when her grandfather’s superiors learned he could type, they pulled him from the battlefield to type up the peace treaty between North and South Korea. She encouraged students to ask questions of the veterans who were scheduled to meet with students following the ceremony. PVIS teacher Taylor Croft spoke about the history of Veterans Day, which he noted was originally known as Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I. Croft explained that in 1938 the United Stages Congress made Armistice Day an official national holiday dedicated to the cause of world peace and that in 1954, Congress changed the word Armistice to Veterans and designated the day to honor all veterans of all wars. “We can scarcely imagine sacrifices (veterans have) made in service to their country,” said Croft. “These brave men and women have ensured the freedom and democracy we enjoy remain intact today.” He encouraged students

21 Holiday Celebration

PENNYSAVER holiday presentation is planned. “We have a performer coming to perform ‘A Christmas Carol,’” said library director Catherine O’Sullivan, who added that the actor, Christopher Davis, had brought his version of the classic tale of Christmas transformation to the library many years ago. “He was very popular, and everyone enjoyed him, so we asked him back,” said O’Sullivan. Davis’ rendition of the Charles Dickens story includes audience volunteers helping Davis to bring the characters of Scrooge and the Cratchit family to life as he narrates. In addition, the library will

hold a Gingerbread House Contest for area residents from prekindergarten through adults, including a special family category. First-, second-, and thirdplace winners will be named in five categories. The gingerbread houses will be on display at the library through Friday, Dec. 7. Also on Friday, a live Nativity will be coordinated by members of Gracepoint Church at Kitchen Kettle Village, 3529 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. At 6 p.m., Mrs. Claus and Yummie will be in the Kling House Restaurant to meet friends by reservation. Heritage Society Will Hold Home Tour Early one morning, Dave DiFranco heard a horse and buggy clip-clop past his home on East Main Street in Strasburg. A bit later, the steam whistle of an iron horse wafted on the breeze. The two sounds drew a smile to Dave’s face. “I can stand hearing that every day,” he thought to himself. As of Nov. 9, Dave and his wife, Debbie, are full-time residents at the house at 51 E. Main St. The couple and their son, David DiFranco Jr., previously lived in Swedesboro, N.J., but for the past two years, every weekend has been spent in their new home, rehabbing it in preparation for full-time living. The DiFrancos initially purchased the house with David, who has since bought a home elsewhere in Strasburg. While the DiFrancos’ home is new to them, it was built in 1852 and has been added to over the years. At first, neither of the DiFranco men were interested in the property, as it needed a lot of work, but Debbie saw its potential. The two men came around, and the family made an offer. “I’m used to a very modern, 4,000-square-foot house, so this was a change,” Dave remarked. The family worked to refinish floors and paint walls. Debbie enjoyed shopping for Amishmade furniture, and she got to know more about her new community. The DiFrancos had been introduced to Lancaster County by friends approximately 15 years ago, and they had vacationed here

every year since. “Everyone here is so welcoming,” Debbie observed. “This town is so friendly.” “We call this our Mayberry. It’s so nice to walk to everything,” Dave added. The house is set back from the street, making room for a tiny courtyard where the DiFrancos often relax in the shade of a large tree. The wrought-iron gate will be open to ticketholders from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, as part of the Strasburg Holiday Home Tour hosted by the Strasburg Heritage Society. Folks may tour the first floor of Dave and Debbie’s home, which will be decorated for Christmas. The DiFrancos enjoy celebrating holidays, and they have been in Strasburg for the past few Halloweens. Last Christmas, while more low-key than usual, was held at the Strasburg house as well. David runs a YouTube channel, where, among other things, he posts videos of the family’s celebrations. Glimpses of the house as the renovations neared completion can be seen in the twopart video of Christmas 2017. When they heard that the family planned to move from New Jersey, fans of the channel sent housewarming gifts, and several DiFranco-branded items can be found throughout the first floor. Although the house looks good as it is now - Debbie is especially proud of the bucolic mural on the living room wall - the family still plans to add a few touches. Butcher block countertops are on the wish list for the kitchen, in which 7-foot ceilings harken back

ARRIVING LATE?

Strasburg Heritage Society member Lorna Mentzer (back) joined the DiFrancos, (from left) David Jr., Dave, and Debbie, to announce that the Strasburg Holiday Home Tour will be held on Dec. 1. The DiFrancos’ circa 1852 home will be one of the properties featured on the tour. to its 19th-century origin. Dave also plans to set up a model railroad layout, but he does not expect it to be ready for the house tour. Eight additional houses will be part of the Holiday Home Tour, and three churches will participate as well. What organizers are calling Tour Central will be set at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St., where guests may buy lunch from a Girl Scout troop and purchase tour tickets, crafts, and greens. Additionally, bids will be accepted in a silent auction for a Colonial dinner for six to eight people. Tour tickets may be purchased at a discount through Thursday, Nov. 29, at Hart Road Potters, Main Street Antiques, and Speckled Hen. The proceeds will enable the Strasburg Heritage Society to continue its efforts to preserve

Lancaster Seeks Age-Friendly City Designation Lancaster City Council took the next step toward receiving the World Health Organization’s (WHO) designation as an AgeFriendly City by unanimously approving a resolution supporting the city’s application to join the Global Network of AgeFriendly Cities and Communties (GNAFCC.) The seeds for the GNAFCC were planted in 2007 when WHO published “A Guide to AgeFriendly Cities.” This study suggests eight areas that support an active and healthy environment for all ages; these include housing, transportation and health services, civic participation, employment, respect and social inclusion. From the 33 cities initially involved in the study, the network has now grown to 705 cities and communities in 39

PA-015100

countries. Unlike many designations that require certain milestones to first be achieved, the Age-Friendly designation is aspirational. It signifies the municipality’s intention to become more age-friendly by embarking on a five-year cycle of planning, implementing and evaluating projects that make the community a great place to grow old. The catalyst for Lancaster’s journey to learn about the WHO’s Age-Friendly initiative is the Lancaster Area Senior Services (LASS), an association of 19 nonprofit retirement communities that provide homes and services for more than 13,100 Lancaster residents and employ more than 8,200 people. LASS hired consultant Chris Kennedy to manage the project

R017865

of introducing the program to Lancaster. Kennedy has been engaged with projects involving the Age-Friendly program since 2007. Over the past six months, LASS has made presentations and convened conversations with multiple organizations and key stakeholders that directly or indirectly deal with the quality of living in Lancaster. As this educational process unfolded, a number of sparks were ignited. Lancaster’s director for countywide planning, Scott Standish, confirmed that the Age-Friendly principles are aligned with the county’s comprehensive plan under development, places 2040. Millersville University School of Social Work’s chairperson, Karen Rice, said she was excited about the opportunities that the program held for the students and older adults. Partnering with the geography department, students have begun to survey and collect data about services throughout the county. The results of this environmental scan will be mapped and shared with key stakeholders upon completion. The county board of commissioners supported the concept of the Age-Friendly program at its July 10 work session. See GNAFCC pg 16

Tabor Receives Reaccreditation Tabor Community Services recently achieved national reaccreditation through the Council on Accreditation (COA) for the fifth consecutive time. Organizations pursue accreditation to demonstrate the implementation of best practice standards in the field of human services. COA evaluated all aspects of Tabor’s programs, services, management, and administration. Tabor has been accredited since 1998. COA accreditation is an objective, independent validation of an agency’s performance. The process involves a detailed review and analysis of an organization’s administration, management, and service delivery functions as compared to international standards of best practice. The standards driving accreditation

are designed to ensure that services are well-coordinated, culturally competent, evidence-based, outcomesoriented, and provided by a skilled and supported workforce. To achieve COA reaccreditation, Tabor first provided written evidence of compliance with the COA standards. After that, a group of specially trained volunteer peer reviewers confirmed adherence to these standards during a series of on-site interviews with trustees, staff, and clients. Based on their findings, COA’s volunteer-based Accreditation Commission voted that Tabor Community Services had successfully met the criteria for reaccreditation. For the past 50 years, Tabor has been helping clients learn how to meet their housing and financial
