Lions Club To Host First Christmas Bazaar By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
The Gap Town Clock Lions Club will hold its first Christmas bazaar at the Gap Fire Hall on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will offer food and shopping to get everyone into the spirit of the season. Local vendors and crafters will be featured, with more than 25 tables already booked for the event in addition to tables for Lions Club member businesses. “We’re trying to showcase the vendors in the community,” said Jason Hurst, club president. There will be a wide assortment of home party-type vendors as well as crafters offering jewelry, needle crafts, origami, ceramics and more. “We tried to make it a good mix,” said Lions member Carol Fuller, who is organizing the event along with Kelly Logan. There will be a special shopping
section for youngsters at the Kids Santa’s Shoppe, where children will be able to purchase small gift items for a dollar or less for their own holiday giving. Youngsters will also enjoy demonstrations by a local dance studio from noon to 2 p.m., and there will be a free craft table where children can paint a ceramic Christmas ornament. “I’m hoping children come. I think it will be a lot of fun,” Fuller said. W hen shoppers are ready for a snack or lunch, they can check out the Lions’ food tables, where they will find chicken potpie, hot dogs, chips and beverages. Organizers hope that visitors will also take time while eating to relax and meet friends and neighbors. “Come out and see people from the community,” Hurst said. “We want people to come and hang out and have a good time.” See Christmas Bazaar pg 8

Christmas
Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center during the Christmas season. Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation in support of the lives of people with physical and age-related disabilities. Gifts are wrapped for shoppers at the “S” Mall of Park City Center during all regular mall hours through Christmas. More than 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to provide coverage for all available shifts. A shift is typically two to four hours. Proceeds from the gift wrapping project will benefit United Disabilities Services Foundation, a Lancaster-based nonprofit which provides programs
and services to help people with disabilities live more independent lives in the community. Funds raised will be put to work in programs such as adult day programming, custom wheelchair seating, and United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dogs. The foundation is still accepting volunteers to wrap. Individuals and volunteers 14 years of age or older from church, community, civic, or school groups or individuals are invited to register for various shifts. To volunteer, readers may contact Lori Spradling at 740-624-1866 or email lorispradling@hotmail.com. UDS is a nonprofit organization based in Lancaster that serves more than 50 counties
throughout Pennsylvania. UDS is committed to helping seniors, veterans and people with disabilities lead more independent and fulfilling lives. UDS has developed a wide variety of services and programs that improve quality of life and expand boundaries - including transition school, care management, accessible home modifications, service dogs, custom wheelchair seating and more. Today, more than 450 employees serve seniors and people with disabilities. In 2018, UDS provided services to more than 5,000 clients, enabling them to live more independently and in control of the decisions that affect their lives. For more information, readers may visit www.udservices.org.

The new TOTE Loan Program provides interest-free loans to Lancaster County residents who have earned a high school diploma or GED and are planning to attend an eligible trade, occupational, or technical program. Students are eligible to receive one loan totaling up to $3,400 to aid in their tuition expenses. “Along with federal student aid, that gets them a little bit closer (to covering school costs),” said LDHL board president Samantha Eck. Eck noted that while LDHL has offered interest-free loans to college students from Lancaster County for nearly 60 years, this is the first time it has created a lending program for students attending technical or trade schools. To ease into the TOTE Loan Program, interest-free loans will initially be available to students who will attend the 12-month or 18-month Practical Nursing or 16-month Automotive Technology Special-
ized Associate Degree programs at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC). “It’s a pilot, (so) I’m sure we will learn things doing it,” Eck said. “Our goal will be to open (the program) to any (school), but we have to start with baby steps.” The funding for the loans came from the estate of E. Ann Klein, who died in 2007. Klein had distributed funds to several organizations, with the stipulation that they receive interest payments from the invested money for the first 10 years. Now that the time has expired, LDHL has received the principal, and the resulting cash in hand will allow the funding of loans. When deciding how to use the bequest, the LDHL board looked at Klein’s life for inspiration. Klein was the daughter of one of the owners who turned New Holland Machine Company into a thriving business. She held a pilot’s license and had an interest in antique

cars. According to the Elizabethtown Historical Society, Klein and her husband had more than 55 antique automobiles stored in Elizabethtown. When Klein was unable to source tires and other parts to restore her vehicles, she launched the Universal Tire Company and later Klein Kars. While business principles can be learned in a traditional fouryear college, trades like auto repair are typically leaned at a different kind of school, and LDHL wanted to support those efforts. “This is a need that our community has,” Eck remarked, adding that while public perception may be that attending trade, occupational, and technical programs is relatively low cost, the reality is that tuition may run as high as $20,000. LDHL expects to receive applications from adults who have already entered the workforce and now want to change careers or to enhance
their skills, Eck said. “ We’re learning how big of an audience there is (for this),” she added. Unlike the existing college loan program, which has firm deadlines and mails checks every year on Aug. 1, the TOTE Loan Program will have a rolling application process. Funds will be disbursed in time for new sessions at the LCCTC. Like the college loan program, the Student Aid Report (SAR) generated after the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be used to determine the size of a TOTE loan. Borrowers will also need co-signers for the loans, and repayment will begin six months after the recipient graduates or leaves school. Individuals who are interested in learning more and applying can do so at https://lancdollars.org/tote -loan. Those with questions about the new program may call the LDHL office at 717-397-7920 or email info@lancdollars.org.

Loan Program from pg 1
- Pequea Valley Edition - December 4, 2019 - 3
HANUKKAH This Jewish Man Antiochus Epiphanies was a descendant of a general in the army of Alexander the Great. He was the ruler of Syria in 164 BC. He tried to conquer Egypt, but Pharaoh sent him packing his bags for home. He was furious and tried to take his wrath out on Israel. He not only ordered a pig to be sacrificed on the altar in the Temple, but he also ordered local Levites to sacrifice pigs in their own town. In the town of Modin a Levite named Matthias refused to sacrifice a pig. He and his sons killed the Syrian captain and his soldiers. This started Israel’s successful three year rebellion against Syria. Israel was successful in their rebellion and the profaned Altar in the Temple was taken down and a new one was erected. There was only enough consecrated oil in the Temple to burn for one day. The Lord made that small amount of oil last for eight days, until the new consecrated oil was ready. It was decided that the victory and the miracle of the oil would be celebrated every year, as a testimony to the saving grace of our eternal Master and King. Jewish families light their Candelabra with the addition of one more candle each day until eight candles are lit. The candles are always lit with one special candle called the servant candle (Shamash). One hundred and sixty four years later, the most famous Jewish man that ever lived, stood in the Temple courts at the Feast of Dedication called Hanukkah. The people asked Him to tell them plainly, if He was the Messiah. He said “He and His Father are One” (John 10:30). He was the Prophet that Moses spoke about in Deutueronomy. 18:15ff. He said that “He is the light of the world” (John 8:12). “He brought light into the world but men loved darkness” (John 3:19). “He made the world but the world knows Him not” (John 1:10). “He laid his life down freely, no one could take it from Him” (John 10:18). His life was sacrificed for the benefit of all who would come to Him as Savior and Messiah. This was done according to “the set purpose and foreknowledge of His Heavenly Father” (Acts 2:23). He had to die, for The Scripture says “It is the blood that makes atonement for the soul” (Lev. 17:11). Messiah wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41). He says to all who will listen “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28). “Arise, shine for thy light is come (Isaiah 60:1)” “Messiah is the light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel”. (Luke 2:32). Messiah said, “I am the root and the offspring of David. The bright and morning star” (Revelation 22:16). Yeshua (Jesus the Messiah) is the only one who can save you from eternal damnation. Come unto Him so that you may have eternal life with Him and His Father, in their everlasting Kingdom. It does not matter whether you are Jewish or Gentile. He says to you PERSONALLY “Come to me and I will give you Eternal life with me”. Railway Society Plans Open Houses An outdoor deck will allow attendees to safely enjoy watching as Amtrak trains race pass the 137-year-old freight station at nearly 90 mph. Visible eastward across the tracks is a 1907 Pennsylvania Railroad passenger station. Passenger service from this station was discontinued in 1952. Newly installed stairs will allow visitors to climb aboard an N7E caboose restored to its Conrail-era paint and logo scheme. The caboose sits along the mainline on the east side of the freight station. The caboose has an enlarged logo that was normally installed on the Conrail engines. Only two cabooses of 20 in the N7E class are believed to have been outfitted with a large, rather than small, logo. some fundraisers, like chicken barbecues, but as far as something for the community, this would be the first,” Hurst said. The Lions Club is composed of businesspeople who came together to network and to serve the community. “There was a Lions Club in Gap many years ago. Right now, our Lions is more of a business Lions Club,” Hurst noted. “There’s a lot of business owners in it who want to give back to the community.” The Gap Town Clock Lions Club name is a way of drawing attention to a local attraction. “We just wanted to highlight the uniqueness of Gap and the town clock, so Gap Town Clock Lions is what we officially go by,” said Hurst. The Gap Fire Hall is located at 802 Pequea Ave., Gap. For more information on the Christmas bazaar or to reserve a vendor’s table, readers may call Fuller at 717-442-3158. Proceeds from the event will help support community projects, including the Pequea Valley High School’s Career Occupational Relevant Education Academy (C.O.R.E.) Program, which teaches trades to students and promotes craftsmanship. “We thought the C.O.R.E. Program was really neat. It’s something, as a Lions Club, we’ve really gotten behind,” Hurst said. “They’re providing more of a hands-on, real-life experience in plumbing, framing, electrical and more. Instead of waiting for kids to get through high school then decide to go to a trade school, they have everything set up there, including a beautiful space to teach them the trades. We want to see kids have good opportunities.” The Gap Town Clock Lions Club will also use a portion of the proceeds to add to its fund to help local residents in emergencies. “We’re building up some of our reserves to help if there are needs in the community,” Hurst said. This is the first major fundraising event for the Gap Town Clock Lions Club, which was formed just over a year ago and now has about 20 members. “We’re still building our group and spreading awareness that we are here. Wilbur Horning of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) has not forgotten what it is like to be a child waiting in line to see Santa Claus. “Every December when Christmas on Main is held, Santa Claus visits Kauffman’s,” said Wilbur, referring to Santa’s visits to the NHAHS Museum in the Kauffman building, 207 E. Main St., New Holland, during Christmas on Main, which is held the first Saturday of December. “People go to St. Stephen Church for breakfast, and then the (children) come up here and stand in line and wait to see Santa,” continued Wilbur. “Someone said it would be nice to have a train layout here for the (children) while they’re waiting to see Santa Claus.” Seeking to implement that idea, Wilbur turned to Henry Black of the Garden Spot Village Train Club for help. Black connected him to Tom Hawk, who enlisted Art Johnsen and Art Algeo for help. The trio met with Don Horning of NHAHS to learn more about the area at the museum where the train would run. After considering three different layouts, the club members went to work on a complex double figure eight. It will take four minutes for the train to traverse the entire track. More than 15 of the 23 members of the train club worked on building the HO layout, which is divided into four segments - a farm area, a railroad depot, a downtown area, and an industrial section. There is also a mountain tunnel where the train will disappear and re-emerge from the other side. “Each area gives a different flavor to the overall layout,” said Johnsen. The dairy farm features custom-painted Holstein cows
and a laboriously made tiny split rail fence. A custom chain-link fence is also included. “We got signage for local businesses to put on the buildings to make it feel like New Holland,” said Johnsen, who pointed out a building on Main Street that resembles the bank building across from the historical society. “The buildings are clustered similar to the way they are here (in downtown),” said Johnsen, adding that Looking forward to showcasing a model organizers purposely train layout at the New Holland Area designed the layout to Historical Society for Christmas are give a feeling of New (from left) Art Johnsen, Wilbur Horning, Holland.” Names of businesses on the buildings Lloyd Ziegler, and Tom Hawk. In addition, veterans shared their stories with students, and many veterans brought in items to share. The students also watched a brief video on Veterans Day and wrote “dog tag” thank you cards to veterans. In the parking lot, students had the chance to see a few restored World War II military vehicles. The idea behind the event is to work with community members to teach students about the contributions and sacrifices America’s veterans have made throughout the years that allow Americans to enjoy the freedoms available to them today.

Salty, buttery, sweet, crunchy, and smooth: these are all adjectives to describe the fried brie. Perfect for all your entertaining this holiday season. - 1 (8 oz.) Brie Cheese - 1 Egg, Scrambled - 1/2 cup Panko Breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp. Apricot Preserves - 2-3 Dried Apricot, Diced - 2 tbsp. Golden Barrel Extra Virgin Olive Oil
In a small bowl, scramble egg. Open and remove the wrapping (not the white rind) and dip into egg mixture. Coat the brie evenly with Panko breadcrumbs, pressing crumbs into brie. Roll ends in breadcrumbs as well. Set aside. Drizzle medium-sized pan with olive oil and heat over medium-high heat until oil is hot. Place brie in pan and fry for several minutes until the breadcrumbs are golden brown. With brie up on its end, gradually rotate brie until ends are cooked, then flip over and cook the other side. Remove from heat and set on serving board. Heat apricot preserves in a pan on low heat (or microwave for 30 seconds at a time). Stir in diced apricots. Pour apricot mixture over brie and serve immediately. For more recipes visit www.goldenbarrel.com.

HARTZ Physical Therapy recently presented a check for $35,000 to Off the Streets Lancaster. The funds represent the proceeds from the 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk. HARTZ Physical Therapy’s 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk was held on Oct. 5, and it proved to be one for the record books. Over the past 15 years, $189,000 has been donated to various Lancaster-based charities from the proceeds of the annual event. For the first time this year, all proceeds were earmarked to benefit Off the Streets (OTS) Lancaster, an organization working with local service agencies to assist families and individuals to get “off the streets” and into permanent housing. After all financial results were tallied, the staff of HARTZ Physical Therapy was able to present Off the Streets Lancaster volunteers and board members with a check for $35,000. The annual tally represents the highest net proceeds ever raised through the
event - topping the previous record by $15,000. OTS is a volunteer-run, charitable organization focused on eradicating homelessness in Lancaster County. OTS works in partnership with various other community aid organizations to identify homeless individuals and families who have a sustainable source of income to pay rent but need help overcoming the last obstacles to obtaining permanent housing: a security deposit and basic furniture. Since originating in Lancaster County in May 2013, OTS Lancaster has helped more than 2,500 men, women and children. Lena Hohenadel, grants coordinator for OTS Lancaster, noted that the funds from the Fall Blast 5K will directly help 49 families with income who are experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County. She reported that requests for help increased 38% in 2018 over 2017, and an additional increase is expected in 2019. For more information about OTS, readers may visit www.offthestreetsnow.com /lancaster-pa. The 5K run/walk event was made possible through the support of signature sponsor Environmental Recovery Corporation (ERC) and elite sponsors, which include Apex Realty of Lancaster, Versatek, Roseville Wealth Management, Hajoca of Lancaster, Airport View Self Storage, Emerald Advisors, PNC Bank, Tiger’s Eye, and Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster (OAL). Brian Hartz, owner of HARTZ Physical Therapy, noted that many HARTZ staff members have also had an opportunity to volunteer with OTS. For more information about HARTZ Physical Therapy, a family-owned small business with four locations in Lancaster County, readers may visit www.hartzpt.com.

Tom Berdos (far right) and a group of community members are rehearsing for a performance of the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah,” which will take place at Memorial UMC in Quarryville on Dec. 15. Attendance will be limited to 300 people, and tickets are available now. marked and color coded. “(Tom) is amazing,” agreed Troutman, who has sung with Memorial’s choir since she was 13. “He knows what to ask and how to get sounds from you. I’ve enjoyed (his directing) very much, and Deborah is magnificent on the organ.” Purvis noted that her favorite selections from the portion that will be performed on Dec. 15 are “For Unto Us a Child is Born” and the “Hallelujah” chorus. “It’s one of the most beautiful compositions I’ve heard,” remarked Joshua Benkendorf. At age 16, Joshua is one of the youngest members of the “Messiah” choir. He and a friend come from York. “I love to sing; I’m in five choirs currently,” Joshua explained. “I like the experience (of singing

“They get started before I get to go in, and it sounds so good,” Merleen Troutman commented as she prepared to check in singers who were arriving at Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC) for a rehearsal of the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah.” “I’m very excited (about the production). To me, it’s grand and big for the community. People traveling to come sing for us - I’m just really amazed at it,” she said. Led by Tom Berdos and accompanied on organ by his wife, Deborah Berdos, the rehearsals on Wednesday nights have been a positive experience for everyone involved. Approximately 90 people from Lancaster and York counties have registered to sing in the production, which will take place on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. at the church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville. “It’s been a great turnout from the community,” Tom said, sharing that he had hoped for 60 to 70 people. About 20 of the participants, including Troutman, are from Memorial’s choir. An additional 20 singers are expected to come from New Jersey, where the Berdoses previously lived and produced similar performances of “Messiah.” A full orchestra and professional soloists will also be part of the Dec. 15 production. “I think we’re doing well with it,” Tom said of rehearsing the music. “They’re working hard, and they’re having fun. We laugh at our mistakes and keep learning.” “It’s been very fun and exciting,” agreed John Rintz of Strasburg Township. A member of Mount Eden Lutheran Church, Rintz joined the group as a way of reconnecting with his musical side following a busy career and the recent death of his spouse. “The first two rehearsals were over my head, but now it’s good. Tom is such a great instructor,” Rintz remarked. Tom said he hopes to make “Messiah” performances an annual tradition like they had been at the churches he served in New Jersey. “We’d love for people to come and enjoy it and make it part of their Christmas,” he said. Rintz noted that he would like it to be part of his family’s Christmas tradition as well. “We have a lot of young children in my family. They’re excited to come see this,” he said, adding that it is gratifying to have their support after years spent supporting them. “I’ve been to all their shows.” Strasburg resident Jenny Purvis sings with the West Chester Community Choir and has sung with church choirs, but this is her first time to be part of Handel’s “Messiah.” She is enjoying the experience. “I like to sing, (and) it’s a very friendly group. Everybody sings well,” Purvis commented. “Tom is very organized, very detailed,” she added, holding up a rehearsal sheet with the plans for the evening clearly
