New Holland Band from pg 1 perspective on American carols, and it’s a spectacular opener.” Laudermilch has arranged for soloists to join the band for the performance. West Chester University graduate Sondra Cattich will return to the pops as guest vocalist. “She has the most beautiful alto coloratura voice,” said Laudermilch, who added that Cattich will sing “It’s a Holiday Season” and “Christmas on Broadway,” which is a medley including “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas,” “March of the Toys,” “My Favorite Things,” and more. The other soloist will be saxophonist and fellow West Chester University graduate Chad Smith. According to Laudermilch, Smith, who is originally from Palmyra, has mastered the Rudy Wiedoeft style of saxophone. “Wiedoeft was a sax star of the 1920s and 1930s who played rapid-fire notes,” said Laudermilch. Smith, who has played with major orchestras in Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago, has created new arrangements of two Christmas songs - “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” - for the show. “I told him to put some Rudy sounds in there, and he did, so these are two premieres,” said Laudermilch, who added that Cattich and Smith will perform “The Christmas Song” together. “We will see if he does some Rudy there,” Laudermilch said. Additional seasonal songs will include “Waltz of the Flowers” from “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky and an Irving Berlin Christmas medley, which will include “Count Your Blessings,” “Snow,” and “Happy Holidays.” Laudermilch noted that Santa Claus will make a cameo appearance to a new selection called “When Saint Nick Comes Marching In” from “A New Orleans Holiday Celebration.” Readers who would like to purchase tickets may call 717355-5096. Laudermilch noted that individuals may purchase individual tickets or tickets for tables for eight, nine, or 10. Those who would like to learn more about the band may visit www.newhollandband.org.

move and still wonder how he does it. Local residents and visitors can experience on-site dining at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord and treat themselves to a memorable theater experience with friends and family. Currently, the Bird-in-Hand Stage is presenting the new holiday musical “A Christmas to Remember” and also welcoming back the illusions of Brett Myers and “Magic & Wonder of Christmas.” “A Christmas to Remember” will run through Saturday, Dec. 29. In this live holiday musical, Matthew and Mary face unforeseen challenges as the new owners of a thrift store and caregivers of an elderly parent with Alzheimer’s. The play’s intriguing characters, unique situations, and universal themes reveal unexpected treasures in the most unlikely places. Bird-in-Hand Stage wel-
comes audiences to join in this inspirational journey this Christmas season. During “Magic & Wonder of Christmas,” which will run through Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, Brett Myers and his talented cast combine astounding illusions and heartwarming comedy with the best of the holiday spirit in a journey of joy, hope, and celebration that offers seasonal holiday fun for people of all ages. Attendees may create lifelong memories as they rediscover the wonder and true meaning of Christmas. The Bird-in-Hand Stage is located on the lower level of the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant at 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike in Bird-inHand. Discounted tickets with meal packages are also available. For a limited time, readers may use promotional code LOCAL for $5 off tickets to any 2018 Christmas show. To order
tickets, readers may call 800790-4069 or visit www.Bird-inHand.com. The discount is not valid on previous purchases or with other offers, and it will expire on Jan. 1, 2019. Bird-in-Hand Corporation has been celebrating 50 years of Smucker family hospitality in 2018. The Smucker family’s successful experiment with hospitality began in 1968 when family members built a motel in the pasture of their Bird-inHand farm. Guests soon found their 30-room Bird-in-Hand Motor Inn along the historic Old Philadelphia Pike, where they enjoyed wide-open spaces and views of farming country. Two years later, the family opened the Bird-in-Hand Motor Inn Restaurant, offering Pennsylvania Dutch foods that were, according to the slogan in 1970, “home cooking at its best.” Customers who stop by the
Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant through December may enjoy a special 50th anniversary menu, featuring top-selling dishes at special prices and a fresh new twist on old family recipes and guest favorites from the original menu in 1968. Individuals may follow the Smucker family’s journey from Switzerland to Bird-in-Hand and the development of the family’s hospitality businesses in “The Bird-in-Hand Story: 50 Years of Smucker Family Hospitality,” a two-part commemorative book. The book tells the story of the Smucker family and how the family’s members have shared their land and way of life with thousands of visitors to the Village of Bird-inHand. This book is available for purchase at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant and Bird-inHand Bakery & Cafe. For more information, readers may visit www.Bird-in-Hand.com.

According to the organization, older youths who are served by a CASA are more likely to set goals for their future and have clear ideas about how to achieve them and are less likely to be homeless, in trouble, or in jail. With November being National Adoption Month, community members are encouraged to support the thousands of children across the country in need of permanent families by becoming a CASA. A CASA volunteer is a trained citizen age 21 or up who is appointed by a judge to represent the best interest of a child in court. The children that CASA volunteers advocate for have been abused or neglected and placed into the foster care system. CASA volunteers work to help ensure a safe and permanent home for the child as quickly as possible. The process to become a CASA volunteer advocate is multistep and includes an interview, training and shadowing. This process equips CASA volunteer advocates to work alongside youths who are

A December skating show has been a hallmark of the Red Rose Figure Skating Club since 2006. For 2018, Ursula Wolfer, lead choreographer for the presentation, chose to tackle questions concerning acceptance of self and others in a show titled “Mirror Mirror.” The Red Rose Figure Skating Club show will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Lancaster Ice Rink, 371 Carerra Drive, Lancaster. The show will feature up to 45 skaters ranging from 4-year-olds to adults. Solos in the show will be performed by high school seniors and skaters who have reached the elite level in the club. The 2018 soloists will include Manheim Township High School student Katelyn Young, Lancaster Catholic High School student Erin Regan, Hempfield High School students Courtney Meyers and Ellamay Cassidy, Red Land High School student Makayla Robitaille, and Lancaster Mennonite High School student Dulce Shenk-Zeager. For the story of “Mirror Mirror,” Wolfer reflected on the themes of two Disney Channel movies - “Descendants,” which tells the tale of children of storybook villains, and “Zombies,” a musical that pits zombies and humans against each other in a
teens go through.” No village of princes and princesses would be complete without a ball, so the town hosts a big party. The fete, however, is interrupted by uninvited guests when zombies and the storybook villlains’ descendants arrive. The arrival of these characters shakes things up in the town, according to Wolfer. Preconceived notions and stereotypes are questioned as the characters consider the implications of living life differently. “The ‘Descendants’ characters question whether they can try being good,” said Wolfer, adding that the princesses and heroes consider whether they should retaliate for the unkindness they have experienced. “We end the act with a lot of questions,” said Wolfer, who noted that the last number will be skated to Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way.” Wolfer noted that when the second half of the story opens, the
town will be segregated. “The good and evil live together, but not really,” she said. “We look at Zombieville, and there’s a cheerleading number … but the zombies aren’t allowed to take part.” Members of the town dream of a place where all its citizens can be who they are and live and work together in appreciation of each other’s differences. Wolfer skated with Disney on Ice for several years, and she has brought her professional experience to the choreography of the show. “In our finale number, we bring in every age and level skater on the ice together for a number,” she said. “We do a giant pinwheel with this mixed group. (This display) is almost a signature of our shows.” Readers who wish to purchase tickets to the show may email Lynne@rrfsc.org. Tickets for certain seating areas will be discounted. Children age 2 and under who sit on a caregiver’s lap will be admitted free.
Skaters who will take part in the Red Rose Figure Skating Club’s “Mirror Mirror” show include (from left) Courtney Meyers, Erin Regan, Katelyn Young, Ellamay Cassidy, Makayla Robitaille, and Dulce Shenk-Zeager. The show will be staged on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Lancaster Ice Rink.

high school setting. According to Wolfer, the story of “Mirror Mirror” begins in a lovely village filled with princes, princesses, and heroes. Audience members will be welcomed to step into the magic mirror and visit this town where life is good. Wolfer said that musical performances for this portion of the show will be set to the songs “Happy” and “The Best Day of My Life.” However, all is not perfectly well in the town of royalty and heroes. “We rarely stop to think about the struggles these heroes may have,” said Wolfer. “Every princess is searching for her prince, and how does she know that he loves her for who she really is?” Wolfer said one of the princesses in the show will skate to Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know?” “We are showing another side of (the princesses),” explained Wolfer. “They are not sure how the public perceives them, and they are a little insecure. PVPL Schedules Annual Fundraising Gala a By Ann Mead Ash
Library director Catherine O’Sullivan cannot wait to see the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL) after it is set up and decorated for the annual Tasting Gala. “This is one of our major fundraisers, and it’s beautiful,” said O’Sullivan. “The library is transformed with candlelight and tablecloths.” The 2018 event, which will be held at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, will offer attendees tastings of a variety of foods and beverages. This year’s tasting will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. A few high-top tables
offered samplings of roasted beef tenderloin with caramelized onions, blue cheese crumbles, and burgundy reduction, along with the popular creamy crab and corn chowder. “The soup is the high point,” said O’Sullivan. “That is a big (draw).” Shrimp cocktail, hoisin grilled pork tenderloin with Asian slaw, and local cheeses will also be served. This year’s dessert table will feature a variety of sweets, including chocolates donated by local businesses. Hot milk sponge cake will be brought to the venue by Sadie Ebersol, and sweet treats will be provided by a neighboring bakery. International coffees and teas

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, has slated two events. The Holiday at Landis Valley Bonfire event, which has been a Landis Valley tradition for generations, will take place on Friday, Dec. 14, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The museum will be open to the community, free of charge. Attendees are asked to bring a donation of canned goods, which will be given to the Lancaster County Food Bank. The bonfire event will feature horse-drawn wagon rides, caroling with the Lititz Moravian Trombone Choir around a bonfire in the village triangle, cookies and hot cider in the Yellow Barn, luminarias lining the lanes, and a cooking demonstration in the Tavern. Landis Valley will host a Winter Day Camp on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 27 and 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The camp, geared toward children ages 5 to 11, will take a look at Christmas through the eyes of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Participants will cook a holiday feast and make crafts, including sewing a rag doll and creating a tin punch ornament. To register, readers may call education coordinator Sheri Brown at 717-569-0401, ext. 228. Space is limited. A cost, which includes both days, has been set per child, with a discount for Landis Valley Associates member children. Prima To New Open Facility Prima will open its new facility, located at 941 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, with a celebratory “Piano Men” concert at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 7 and 14, and Saturdays, Dec. 8 and 15. Prima’s history as a nonprofit theater organization includes hosting Broadway guest artists and presenting a variety of boutique musicals and concerts. Founded by Mitch Nugent, Prima quickly brought together regional and Broadway talent in more than a dozen venues across Lancaster County. Venue-hopping soon began to challenge Prima’s production teams and inconvenience audiences. Earlier this year, with the leadership of Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, Prima acquired what was formerly the Hamilton Ballroom at Wheatland Place. A $750,000 renovation was undertaken. The new 200-seat venue offers flexible seating and staging arrangements for theater, music, film, and special events. The venue is prepared for hospitality services with a full kitchen. Free, on-site parking is available. “Piano Men” is an original concert that will feature the music of Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Elton
John, and Ray Charles. Songs will include “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” “Bennie and the Jets,” and “Hit the Road, Jack.” The singers, including Diedre Cravey, Joy Lee, Reji Woods, and Jeremy Schonfeld, will be backed by a live band. Woods can be seen in “Orange Is the New Black.” Schonfeld is a rock musical singer and composer. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 717-327-5124 or by visiting www.primalancaster.org. Programming plans for 2019 include a series of MainStage musicals, featuring “Disenchanted,” “Godspell,” and “Jekyll and Hyde,” and a concert series called “Altro,” including “70s Smash Hits,” “Sondheim Unplugged,” and “Motown Legends.” In order to utilize the new community resource to its fullest potential, Prima has begun a three-year, $3.2 million effort called FWD. Nearly half of the funds to be raised has been committed thus far for renovations and facility expenses. The remaining funds raised through FWD will go toward expanding artistic programming and supporting artists. More details can be found at www.primaFWD.org.
