Hometown Heroes - Meeting Needs In PVSD BY ANN MEAD ASH

athy Koenig, director of student services for Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), can quickly name the main issues that became concerns when COVID-19 restrictions hit in March. Food insecurity, internet connection for PVSD students, and the potential of homelessness spill out in that order. Koenig set about tackling those problems on March 16, when the state shutdown occurred. She began by connecting with Adam Nagle, director of The Factory Ministries, about partnering to provide lunches to students in need in PVSD. She also worked with Gavin Scalyer, food services director for PVSD, and soon families were picking up lunches at the Together Community Center in Paradise. Making sure PVSD students had access to internet services so they could complete virtual schooling was another issue in the district, which covers a wide area. “We were able to work with Comcast,” said Koenig, who noted that PVSD tech director Ashley Rednak worked

education at West Va. Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.V., where she played basketball. She received her master’s degree in special education from Marshall University in Huntington, W.V. Her principal certification is from Penn State University, and she is completing her superintendent letter at California University of Pennsylvania. Koenig came to PVSD in March 2009 to serve as assistant principal at Pequea Valley High School. She later served as director of special education. Prior to coming to PVSD, she taught physical education, coached girls basketball, and oversaw special education at Donegal High School in Mount Joy. In her current role, she oversees English as a Second Language programming, gifted services, 504 plans that fall under the Americans With Disabilities Act, and safety. She cochairs the safety and wellness committee. Koenig noted that having a relationship with The Factory Ministries has been invaluable. “We can’t do everything in house,” she said. “Having The Factory (partnership) has been so helpful.”

Cathy Koenig, director of student services for Pequea Valley School District, has been working with area organizations to meet needs caused by COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

with Koenig and PVSD social workers to complete home visits to get families connected. Koenig also worked with The Factory to figure out where hubs could be created. “There were places Comcast didn’t go, but we could talk to churches and libraries about families going there to use the parking lot,” said Koenig, who added that getting students connected could be a special problem when parents worked two jobs or worked late. “We were able to get some hotspots to help some families,” Koenig said. As the homeless liaison for the district, Koenig works with families that become homeless, connecting them with The Factory Ministries for aid in a variety of areas. “That partnership with The Factory can help find housing and resources,” said Koenig. Although homelessness was held off by freezes on rent, Koenig has alerted counselors and social workers that issues may arise. Koenig was born in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Her father worked for the United States Forest Service so the family moved often. Koenig received her bachelor’s degree in health and physical

Jaden, 4, uses crutches to walk short distances and relies on a wheelchair for longer trips. Watching her son try to navigate the world with a disability inspired Allen to create Wonders Within Reach, a travel website and blog focused on travel resources for families with disabilities. Her blog, which she launched in February of 2019, was recently named in the top 10 internationally for disability travel blogs by Feedspot, which curates and ranks blogs in niche categories. Allen, who lives in Elizabethtown and is also the mother of Wesley, 8, and Nella, 4, was a lifelong traveler before having children and has visited places around the world. She wanted to bring that experience to her family but realized she needed to view travel in a different way because of Jaden. She got the idea for Wonders Within Reach after thinking about launching an Instagram account focused on family travel. She soon realized that although there were lots of accounts like that, something was missing. “None of the families looked like mine, she noticed. “You don’t see a lot of families with disabilities out traveling. You tend to see other families like yours at physical therapy or at the hospital. I wanted to show what it’s like out in the community. Allen noted that approximately 20% of people in the United States live with a disability. “My goal with my website is to raise disability awareness throughout the travel industry, she said. “I believe that awareness is the first step toward progress. Allen’s website and blog feature posts on everything from the most See Helping pg 3

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) recently honored Sen. Scott Martin as Legislator of the Year for his work to ensure young people facing long-term illness and injury can continue their studies. Martin was the author of Act 18 of 2019, which created a new grant program to make telepresence technology available to more students so they can continue to participate in classroom activities through the use of mobile robotic devices that resemble an electronic tablet mounted on a Segway unit. The program ensures that young people who face challenging health circumstances do not miss out on valuable instructional time with teachers and learning opportunities with their classmates. busy summer. The troop found ways to not only continue regular meetings via Zoom but also to participate in a few camping trips. “The troop normally goes to Camp Rodney in Maryland but back in June we made the decision not go, said Zink. “The Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster and parent committee worked to create a pseudo summer camp at Hickory Run. We did an extended weekend, where the Scouts were able to camp, earn merit badges and work on rank requirements and skills. The troop also kept busy with weekend camping trips at Jim Landis Woodland Preserve and Rickett’s Glen State Park and a merit badge weekend at Camp Mack in Newmanstown. Additionally, the Scouts have kept up their Adopt-AHighway cleanup commitment and they took part in the annual Scouting for Food drive. “This year, we hung door hangers (asking for donations) on one Saturday and the following Saturday we picked up what (canned goods they) left out for us, noted Zink. “We (collected) three beds of pickup trucks full of food. The food was donated to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. The troop is looking forward to a snow tubing outing in December and to a full year of activities in 2021. The Scouts are currently selling cookbooks to help defray the costs of their events. Anyone interested in purchasing the book, which contains recipes submitted by Scout members’ families, should email zink.scouts @gmail.com. The troop meets in the pavilion behind Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St., Atglen, on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Boys ages 11 to 18 are welcome to join, and the troop welcomes visitors at its regular meetings. In the event of inclement weather, the troop meets via Zoom.

and learn how they live as Henri endeavors to find his family again. The book, which features more than 40 of Madenspacher’s drawings, was formatted by Ashley Reinhard and printed by Yurchak Printing in Landisville. Originally from upstate New York, Meredith worked as a Spanish teacher and a paralegal before moving to Lancaster with her first husband David Kluxen. When their children were preteens, David died as a result of a single-car accident in the early 1990s. Meredith journaled to work her way through her grief. “At night, I would write and cry and put it away,” she recalled. When she told a friend about the journal, the friend suggested Meredith’s writings might help someone else through grief. “Listen for the Whispers: Coping With Grief and Learning to Live Again” was first published in 2010. It was based on a summer 2017 beach trip where each morning for 42 mornings, she picked up a shell and wrote a corresponding message to go with it in her blog, calling the series “The Daily Shell.” Meredith brought the writing together with her seashell photos to create a book that was sold in shops in Ocean City and Cape May, N.J., as well as Rehoboth, Del. The author and artist met once before the pandemic arrived, and Madenspacher showed Meredith samples of her work. “ We hit it off right away. I knew she would be the

of a hermit crab who lives with his family under a fishing pier. The tale sets the stage for Henri’s “growing” experience as he and his sister and parents scavenge along the shoreline, duck predator seagulls, and play together. When Henri outgrows his shell, a new one is found, but as he adjusts to his larger home, a mishap occurs that separates Henri from his pier.
