Broadening Horizons - PLC Training Lab Opens At PVHS By Ann Mead Ash
On Nov. 26, a small group of Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) students, Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) administrators, and representatives of CNH Industrial, located in New Holland, gathered in Room 7 at PVHS. The purpose of the gathering was to hold a ribbon-cutting event for the new STEM PLC Lab that had been made possible by a $25,000 grant from CNH, to celebrate the partnership of the two entities, and to signal a change in direction in the school’s STEM program. PLC stands for programmable logic control, and the machines utilize tiny computers that allow PLCs to control a variety of functions, from household appliances to heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems to amusement park rides. The new lab holds 12 PLC units for student education purposes. Jared Erb, virtual learning and career

readiness coordinator with PVSD, welcomed the gathering and described the partnership between PVSD and CNH, noting that PVHS STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) department members determined that PLC technology would provide the best use for the CNH grant. PVSD superintendent Erik Orndorff spoke briefly, thanking CNH representatives for providing 12 internships opportunities. He also thanked Rob Dorsheimer, who is the PVHS STEM department coordinator; Erb for building a relationship with CNH; and PVHS administrators Amy Koberstein, Arlen Mummau, and John Trovato. Rich Eby, assistant to the superintendent, spoke of how the new lab fits into the district’s vision, which is summed up in the line “Each learner counts.” “We want each one to have their first choice (of career),” he said, noting that while more than 30% of See PVHS Training Lab pg 12

Filling The Grain Bin To Ease The Burden A Few Good Volunteers Community Members Sought To Help Teach ESL
By Ann Mead Ash
Mindy Lapp, Jack Herr, and Sean High, founders of Ease the Burden (ETB), have created a brochure to help county residents understand the mission of the organization. “This is a flowchart we made to make it simple for people,” explained Lapp. “It’s a way to fund needs in the Lancaster community by filling in the gaps that might not necessarily be covered by most organizations,” added Herr. ETB was founded to help county residents who do not need help under normal circumstances, but who have come up against a hardship. “We are here for the working class who maybe by a few hundred dollars a year don’t qualify for help,” said Lapp. Hardships might See Ease The Burden pg 11

Founders of Ease the Burden, a new organization to help residents in the county in need, are (from left) Sean High, Mindy Lapp, and Jack Herr. The organization was inspired by Stumptown Mennonite Church members who reached out to help individuals facing serious financial situations.
A year ago, Pequea Valley High School senior Carlos Cordero and some of his fellow Advanced Placement students were asked to help a new student from Guatemala to translate from Spanish to English. Cordero and the student worked on grammar, formal and informal speech, and subject-verb agreement. “Now he is doing great,” said Cordero. Pequea EC Church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, will host a Community Movie Night on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. This will be the church’s final ice cream and movie night of the year. The church will show “The Christmas Experience,” which features a dramatic retelling of the Nativity story, with teaching and insights from pastor Kyle Idleman. He examines the Christmas story in detail, emphasizing how God chose each individual in the Christmas story for a specific purpose. Additionally, on Sundays, Dec. 15 to Jan. 19, the Sunday school class will use a curriculum based on “The Christmas Experience.” Each session will begin with a pancake brunch at 10:30 a.m., immediately following the church’s 9 a.m. worship service. While eating brunch, the group will watch that week’s lesson video clip from the film, after which there will be a time for the lesson and discussion. Each lesson is based on an event in the account of the birth of Jesus Christ. All events, including the pancake breakfasts, are free of charge. For more information, readers may call 717-768-8362, visit www.lovereignite.com, or search for “Reignite Ministries” on Facebook.

LanChester Chorus from pg 1 By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
1 - Meat Platter • 1 Bowl • 8 Dinner Plates 8 Salad Plates • 8 Soup Bowls • 8 Saucers • 8 Cups
The LanChester Chorus will continue its holiday tradition with its 70th annual Christmas concert, to be held on Sunday, Dec. 22, at the Christiana Fire Company banquet hall, located at 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana. The free concert will begin at 3 p.m. with light refreshments to follow. There is no fee to attend, but there will be a freewill offering. Presenting “Sounds of the Season,” the chorus will perform a variety of sacred and secular holiday music under the direction of Kim Kusnersyk and accompanied by Christine Smith. The music will cover a wide range of styles and tempos from inspirational songs for the season to holiday favorites. The annual concert marks 70 years of music for the LanChester Chorus. The group was founded in 1950 by Martha Jean Moffert and Richard Wright, who served as accompanist and business manager, respectively, for the chorus through 2008. Directors over the years have included Moffert, Sally Breuninger, Jim Zwally, Donald Trostle, Elliott Block, Cliff Behrendt, Earl Pickle and Bill Young. “It’s a long time for a community group to stay together,” chorus member Joan Esworthy said. Over the years, the chorus has presented concerts at local venues, including Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum. Additionally, the chorus has performed several times at the W hite House for Christmas and at the Kennedy Center. It has performed at the Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the Capitol in Harrisburg and the open house at the Governor’s Mansion. The chorus appeared at the Pennsylvania Kiwanis District Convention in Philadelphia and the Kiwanis International Conventions in Atlantic City, N.J., and Washington, D.C. The group has sung the national anthem many times for the Philadelphia Phillies and Lancaster Barnstormers baseball teams. For many years, the chorus presented Saturday evening concerts at the Music Pier in Ocean City, N.J. “We don’t do that much traveling anymore. Most of our things are fairly local,” Esworthy said. The chorus frequently performs at retirement communities, bringing familiar tunes as well as new musical numbers to the residents. During the 2019 Christmas season, the chorus’ schedule includes performances at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Harrison House in Christiana, Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook and Cochranville Methodist Church as well as the annual concert for the community at the Christiana Fire Hall. As a special way to mark the chorus’ 70th anniversary, former members have been invited to return and sing with the group at the Christmas concert in

Residents of Chester and Lancaster counties are welcome to join the group, which meets on Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Christiana Fire Company. “We rehearse in the fall for our Christmas concerts, then we take a winter break and don’t pick up until the spring,” Esworthy said. Middle-schoolers in the Project-Based Learning program at Lancaster Mennonite School hosted their first-quarter exhibition night on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. Exhibition nights are public presentations of projects at the end of each school quarter, offering family and friends the opportunity to see what students have been working on and empowering students to be able to present and demonstrate their projects in a professional way. Exhibition nights showcase work by students in the Project-Based Learning program, which is unique to the Lancaster Campus Middle School. The students had spent the months leading up to the exhibition night researching regions of the world that are experiencing a water crisis, and then they problem-solved, prototyped, analyzed, designed and built solutions. From focusing on a water shortage in India to hurricanes in the Bahamas, the students created desalination filters, rain catchment systems, hurricane simulators and redesigned groundwater wells. They also developed new water carrying systems to give women the opportunity to attend school. At the exhibition night, students presented and demonstrated their projects. More than 200 guests attended the public event and heard first-hand about the global water crisis around the world and the students’

Last-Minute Gift Ideas That Leave Lasting Impressions
T
R052019
radition is a hallmark of the holiday season. Religious services, family gatherings and trips to see Santa Claus are just a few of the many traditions people adhere to during the holiday season. Many holiday shoppers also adhere to the time-honored tradition of last-minute shopping. The perfect gift can sometimes prove to be elusive, especially as the sand in the holiday hourglass keeps dwindling. These last-minute gift ideas may be just what shoppers need to put smiles on the faces of their loved ones this holiday season. Books: Books are often overlooked, especially now that so many readers use e-readers. But books can be an ideal gift and especially convenient for last-minute shoppers, who can even gift e-books from popular websites. Recipients simply receive an email on Christmas morning informing them that their books are ready to be downloaded to their devices. Booksellers at the local bookstore are also a great resource to tap, as they read widely themselves and are familiar with other readers’ favorites as well as new releases. Experiences: A 2017 survey by the global research firm NPD Group found that roughly 40 percent of holiday shoppers planned to give experiences as gifts. Experience gifts open up a host of possibilities for last-minute shoppers stuck on what to give those loved ones who seemingly have it all. Options abound, including day trips, theater tickets, amusement park passes and tickets to concerts and sporting events. Experience gifts are also a great way to support local businesses. Food/beverage: Television channels such as The Food Network have changed the way many people look at food. When gifting the family foodie, last-minute shoppers may not need to look further than the latest hotspot restaurant or specialty grocery store for the perfect gift. Take them out for a night on the town or give a gift card they can use at their convenience. The craft beer boom has created a host of devoted and knowledgeable beer drinkers, so a gift card or growler from a local craft brewery is sure to please people who love hoisting frosty pints. Streaming service subscriptions: Many people are cutting the cord with their cable companies in favor of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Subscriptions
to such services can make ideal and affordable holiday gifts. A six-month or yearlong subscription likely won’t break shoppers’ budgets and will provide months of entertainment to loved ones. Last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever, especially for shoppers willing to think outside the box.
How To Cut Back On Holiday Waste
T
he holiday season is a joyful time of year. But the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day also tend to be very wasteful. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that household waste increases by more than 25 percent during the holiday season. Reducing waste come the holiday season does not mean celebrants have to forgo big family meals or beautifully wrapped gifts. In fact, there are several ways to reduce waste without spoiling the spirit of the season. Give eco-conscious gifts. The environment may not be the first thing that comes to mind when holiday shoppers are looking for gifts for their loved ones, but giving reusable gifts can have a positive, long-term impact on the planet. Reusable coffee mugs, water bottles or straws can dramatically reduce waste over time, and such items make great stocking stuffers. Shoppers also can look for eco-friendly gift items made from recycled materials, which run the gamut from home furnishings to calendars to clothing. Shop local - and forgo shopping bags. Shipping products across the country can involve a large expenditure of gas and packaging waste. Shopping locally not only supports people in the community, it also makes it easy to use reusable bags or not use a bag at all. Several local communities also have a variety of shops in a concentrated area, so walking from store to store can also help reduce shoppers’ carbon footprint. Reuse holiday-specific items. Many people only use gift wrap, gift boxes and gift bags during the holiday season. Such items are oftentimes discarded after Christmas morning. But these items can be reused to cut back on holiday waste. Reusing wrapping paper from year to year can be especially beneficial to the environment. That’s because wrapping paper tends to be dyed or laminated, and many wrapping papers contain non-paper additives that cannot be recycled. Reusing wrapping paper, purchasing only recyclable paper or wrapping gifts in old newspapers or magazines can help holiday celebrants reduce their carbon footprints. Prepare less food and donate any leftovers. The Worldwatch Institute notes that, during the holiday season, celebrants generate three times as much food waste as they do during other times of the year. Large family meals are a tradition of the holiday season, but hosts who routinely find themselves discarding leftovers can plan on preparing less food this year. Consider how much guests are likely to eat and plan meals accordingly instead of buying enough food to feed a small army. Donate leftovers to nearby shelters so nothing goes to waste. Recycle live Christmas trees. Local residents can explore options for recycling live Christmas trees when it’s time to take down the decorations after the holidays. For example, Lancaster County Central Park holds an annual Christmas tree recycling operation. Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation employees grind Christmas trees into free mulch for public pickup. There is a nominal suggested donation per tree, with the funds going toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acidloving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org. Local residents may contact their municipal office for more information about other programs in their community.

How Small Businesses Improve The Consumer Experience
Responses
Small businesses are in better position to respond to negative experiences or reviews, particularly online reviews, because they have fewer customers than large companies that field hundreds, if not thousands, of complaints per day. Studies have shown that customers appreciate responses from businesses they patronize. A 2018 online reviews survey from Review Trackers found that 53

Wrapping Gifts Is An Old Tradition
T
he holiday season is rife with tradition. One of the most recognizable traditions involves wrapping gifts. While the wrapping paper many gift givers use today is a relatively recent phenomenon, the tradition of wrapping gifts is centuries old, with some historians even suggesting it dates back to ancient times. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that many ancient cultures celebrated various holidays that included exchanging gifts, adding that it’s very likely that, even in ancient times, gifts were wrapped to surprise their eventual recipients. Bojagi is a traditional Korean wrapping cloth that might have begun being used sometime during the Three Kingdoms of Korea period, which began in 57 B.C. and ended in A.D. 668. The Japanese tradition of furoshiki, which can be traced back to the 17th century and possibly as far back as A.D. 710, involves using a traditional wrapping cloth to transport certain items, including gifts. As for the gift wrap familiar to today’s holiday celebrants, that traces its
origins to the early 1900s. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that Eli Hyman and Morris Silverman founded the first gift wrap company in the United States in 1903. Unfortunately for gift givers back then, adhesive tape had not yet been invented, and wouldn’t be for another 27 years.

Personalization
Many large companies won’t customize their products, as their financial success is typically rooted in how effectively they can scale to thousands of customers per day, if not more. As a result, large companies have less incentive to work one-on-one with customers. Small businesses are not beholden to scale, which gives them the flexibility to offer more unique products, including customized items.

Improved customer service
Nearly every consumer has had to contact a retailer or service provider regarding a purchase at one point or another. Contacting a large corporation can be a difficult experience for consumers, who often must answer several telephone prompts before they can be connected to a human being. Small businesses typically do not ask customers to clear such hurdles before they can get in touch with an actual person. That makes the process of contacting customer service less time-consuming and aggravating and more enjoyable for customers.
percent of consumers expect a response to negative reviews within a week of posting their reviews and are disappointed when they do not receive a response. Unfortunately, the same survey found that 63 percent of reviewers have never received a response to a review. Small businesses are in a unique position to respond to online reviews, and providing such responses can turn a potentially negative consumer experience into a positive one. What’s more, because online reviews and responses are public, prospective customers can

ome holiday traditions, such as holiday lighting displays, are impossible to miss, while others are more subtle and possibly even unknown to many celebrants. One tradition that falls into the latter category involves the placing of oranges into Christmas stockings. The origins of Christmas stockings are rooted in legend, and one of the more popular tales involves a widowed father of three beautiful girls.
and was concerned that his financial struggles would affect his daughters’ ability to find a spouse. As the legend goes, St. Nicholas was wandering through the man’s town and heard of his concerns. Recognizing that the man was unlikely to accept charity, St. Nicholas slid down the chimney of his house and placed three gold balls in the girls’ recently laundered stockings, which
were hanging by the fire to dry. The value of the gold balls, which were discovered the following morning, was enough to ensure the girls could eventually wed. So what does that have to do with oranges? Those who wanted to replicate the tale could not so easily come upon gold balls to place in stockings, so they chose something similar in appearance: oranges.

the grain bins were full,” he said. “That is our concept. We will raise funds to fill the grain bin, and we will have resources there.” High went on to say that when a partner organization finds a need and submits a grant request, ETB should be able to react quickly. ETB founders were inspired by occurrences at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-in-Hand, where High and Herr attend. The first involved a young couple. When the husband died of cancer, the wife was left with significant medical bills and funeral expenses. Church members spoke to the hospital and funeral home before raising the necessary funds to relieve the widow of the burden. The second situation involved an immigrant couple from Africa. The husband and wife were working and he was attending school, but they were close to having to leave the country because of financial issues. “Someone in the church responded by giving them $500 in cash,” said High. “Ten years later, they are U.S. citizens and homeowners, and he is (working as) a visiting nurse because of that $500.” ETB founders want area residents to know that the grain bin supplies are here for them. “The

include health care expenses, housing problems, or other expenses that could squeeze an individual or a family to the breaking point. “This is for the family that is doing everything right,” explained Lapp. “They’re not living beyond their means … (but) they are one furnace breaking down or alternator failing from going under.” To ease the burdens of those in need, ETB founders plan to form partnerships with churches and nonprofit organizations that know the needs of the local community and have the personnel to screen requests and distribute funds appropriately. These organizations would submit grant requests to ETB. “(The organizations) find the need, (do an intake,) and submit the request to us,” said High. “Someone might not be able to pay their rent, and (they) come to a church for help,” said High. “They may not have the funds, but we could bridge that gap.” Lapp agreed, adding, “ We want to connect churches and ministries to partner with us to get needs met.” High went on to explain that ETB is based on the Old Testament story of Joseph, who filled the grain bins during the years of plenty. “When the famine hit,

With the approach of winter in Pennsylvania come freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and mailboxes. The Postal Service will make every reasonable, safe attempt to deliver mail during and after a storm. However, wintry precipitation can make mail delivery dangerous and slow. Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox including steps, porches, walkways, and street approach - will help keep letter carriers safe and help them continue to offer consistent delivery service. All customers should keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers; mailboxes should be cleared sufficiently on both sides. Curbside or rural boxes should also be kept clear of vehicles, trashcans, and other objects. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery will be curtailed only after careful

PVHS graduates go on to a fouryear college, it is necessary to create an environment that prepares the remainder of the students for productive careers. “It’s a huge commitment from the school board,” said Eby. “We are adding people in technology and (agricultural) areas to create more opportunities for students to have their first choices.” Retiring PVHS principal Mummau talked about the joy of seeing students who are excited about being able to use technology in their learning environment. He praised the cooperative attitude of science and math teachers who journeyed together in forming the STEM program and added that the business community has offered much to the STEM program. “ We need to help supply workers through

business partnerships,” he said, adding that the grant has spearheaded a movement to partner with the community to prepare students for careers. CNH representative Peter Caddick encouraged the students in the room to learn about the career they are interested in by talking to someone who has chosen that career. He noted that CNH has 66 manufacturing facilities around the world and more than 60,000 employees. He stated that in New Holland, 40% of the 1,000 employees need fouryear degrees and 40% need high school diplomas. The other 20% have associate degrees. “Our demographics offer opportunities for all,” he said. He noted that the experience learners will gain in the new lab will provide “opportunities for jobs that involve hands-on skills that are transferrable.” “We need to foster a strong future workforce … for Lancaster County,” he concluded. CNH representatives Caddick, Valerie Verity, and Molly Rogers presented PVSD administration with a plaque to commemorate the occasion and celebrate the partnership. Then, students, teachers, administrators, and CNH representatives gathered behind a red ribbon decorated with a silver bow. Erb led a countdown and Verity cut the ribbon to officially open the center. Erb and Dorsheimer each spoke briefly about the PLCs in the lab, and then students gave PLC demonstrations to members of the gathering. Readers who would like to learn more about the school may visit www.pequeavalley.org.

Second Language (ESL), Cordero began to wonder how their parents could support them academically as they learned English. Cordero’s father, Daniel McCaughn, has experience helping those who do not speak English with applications for citizenship. Cordero came to him with a question. Cordero recalled, “I said, ‘When we have all these students who don’t speak English, how can their parents help them learn English or anything (else they need to study)?’” McCaughn did a little research and discovered ESL programs in Lancaster city and in West Chester. “What about that 40minute stretch of Route 30 (and what if) people can’t go to either of those places?” asked McCaughn. “How will people assimilate if no one will help them?” Cordero, who is preparing to attend college out of the area after graduating, wanted to do a type of senior project before he left. Working together with Shira Zimmerman, director of advocates with The Factory Ministries, he and McCaughn have created “The Moses Project” with the tagline, “For we were once all strangers in a strange land,” a reference to Exodus 2:22. A volunteer meeting will be held in early January, and free two-hour

classes for adults who want to learn English are scheduled to begin at the end of January, probably on Thursday evenings. Father and son are working to create the course. “We are buying books and lesson plans,” said McCaughn, who added that The Factory Pantry will be used to help teach adult students about grocery shopping. “We will train and educate people how to shop smart in a supermarket,” said McCaughn. Volunteers will play a critical role by providing listening ears during small group sessions that follow the group lesson. “It won’t just be book learning,” explained McCaughn. “It’s a practical application of conversational English.” Volunteers need not be teachers. “We want people who just want to come help their neighbors learn to speak English,” said McCaughn. Zimmerman believes this is the first time this service will be available in the community for adults. “We are calling those folks out who want (to volunteer) to be part of these (adults’) journey and education (in ESL),” Zimmerman said. Both McCaughn and Cordero have experience living in places where the native language was not their first language. “I was in the Air Force for 20 years, and I lived all over the world,” said McCaughn. Cordero’s mother, who is from Peru, spoke Spanish to him as a child, and he needed an ESL program to learn English when he entered school. McCaughn said that he understands how hard it is to fit in when you cannot understand your neighbors. “It is so much easier to assimilate to a culture if you can speak the language,” he said. “Even if you speak it poorly, people will respect the effort.” McCaughn learned a number of languages living around the globe. “It was amazing how much I could become a part of my community (once I learned the language),” he said. McCaughn hopes that local residents will volunteer to help for the good of all who live in the Pequea Valley area. “This is a community-based program, started by community members to help our neighbors,” he said. “This is (an) opportunity to be a part of helping your neighbors to live a better and easier life.” Those who would like to volunteer or learn more about the program may call 717-687-9594 or email shira@thefactory ministries.com.

After helping several congregations deal with incidents of child sexual abuse, Linda Crockett started a program aimed to prevent abuse, not just respond to another crisis. Within a few years, the SafeChurch program, based at the nonprofit Samaritan Counseling Center, had a small staff and a survivor-led network of volunteers, and it was helping churches not only statewide but around the country. According to Samaritan Counseling Center, evaluations and national research studies showed the program was working, and in 2018 the organization added Safe Places, which teaches camps, sports programs, and other youth groups to improve how they protect children. Now the three-person team is building a new organization. The organization has a new name, Safe Communities; a new website; new offices in downtown Lancaster; and, effective Wednesday, Jan. 1, a new partnership with Bethlehem-based fiscal sponsor Humanitarian Social Innovations (HSI), which helps nonprofit programs develop and grow. HSI provides operational support, so Safe Communities can continue to focus on direct prevention work while also building a new organization. The challenges of a new organization include fundraising, which is currently particularly tricky for Safe Communities. The organization had been mostly funded by multi-year grants from national foundations, but these grant programs ended this year. Samaritan Counseling Center welcomes taxdeductible contributions to the Safe Communities 2020 Fund through the end of this year to help the program start off strong in the new year.
