After a two-year search, Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, has called a pastor. The Rev. Dr. John Barlow officially began serving in his new role on Aug. 1. Barlow has nearly three decades of serving small Presbyterian churches as solo pastor, and he has been part of the pastoral staffs at several larger churches in Pennsylvania and Minnesota. “I love being a solo pastor. You do everything,” Barlow remarked, listing responsibilities such as preaching sermons and visiting ill parishioners in the hospital.

MOPC Welcomes New Pastor By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Taking Steps To Support Fallen Firefighters’ Families

Barlow grew up in upstate New York, near Schenectady, and attended Gordon College as an undergraduate. He earned a Master of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and followed that up with a Doctor of Ministry from Lancaster Theological Seminary. He also completed a 10-month clinical pastoral class at a hospital in Lancaster. The program taught him how to be present and supportive and a listener while helping people get through difficult experiences, he said. “When I became a solo pastor, it gave me a lot of confidence to know what to do … follow people’s feelings (and) try to affirm them where they were,” Barlow said.

Twelve-year-old Lauren Cohen of East Petersburg has never known a world in which Sept. 11 is just another day. The preteenager has always understood 9/11 as the day when 343 firefighters died in the attacks on the World Trade Center. The event has a personal meaning for Lauren, as her father, Mark Cohen of East Petersburg, has been an active firefighter ever since he became eligible at age 16. “Firefighting is a big part of my life,” Lauren said. “My dad is a big role model for me. I want to be a firefighter just like him.”

Lauren Cohen holds helmets that will be given away in a fundraiser as part of the Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Sept. 13. Thus, when Lauren considered what good deed to do for her bat mitzvah - a religious ceremony marking the

Flipside Big Band will give two concerts at the outdoor amphitheater in Lampeter on Aug. 16 and Sept. 13. By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Like so many other performing groups, Flipside Big Band had to cancel its scheduled concerts this past spring and summer. Recently, however, the ensemble found an outdoor rehearsal venue and was able to begin preparations for a concert at Woodcrest Villa later this

month. Conditions were also right for the band to present two of the three concerts it was contracted to give in Lampeter. “We typically get at least 50 people in the audience, and they’re spread out anyway,” said Flipside business manager and trombonist Dale Diller. “We can spread out on the stage.” Flipside Big Band is about half

of the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band, which formed in 1992. Howard Boots conducts both groups. Diller estimates that Flipside was created 18 years ago after a man who moved from New Jersey brought a collection of big band sheet music with him. “The first time I remember us playing (as Flipside) was for my son’s wedding in 2002,” Diller said. See Big Band pg 3

Traditionally, Hospice & Community Care (HCC) holds its annual Labor Day Auction at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, and the event features nearly 10,000 items on the auction block and a variety of food selections sold on-site. Nearly 3,500 people attend the two-day event annually.

This year, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event has been scaled down and will be held virtually from Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Tuesday, Sept. 15. “This is our 26th year, and we’ve held it in different places over the years because it has grown exponentially,” said Coco Minardi, donor relations manager. “The first auction we

had was in an outdoor area at a fire company. We made $1,800. Last year we raised $877,000. It is the backbone of our fundraising operation here at hospice.” See Labor Day Auction pg 2

A variety of items, including quilts, jewelry and sports memorabilia, will be offered as part of a Hospice & Community Care virtual auction to be held from Sept. 1 through 15.

This year’s stair climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the climb will begin after a solemn program at 9 a.m. The event will conclude around 11:30 a.m. There is a cost to participate in the climb, during which participants will summit the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - the number in the World Trade Center towers. The proceeds will be given to the NFFF. Lauren hopes to raise additional funds for the NFFF by offering opportunities to win new fire helmets. She contacted a manufacturer, which donated two standard helmets, and a local supplier of firefighting gear, which provided a gift certificate for a leather helmet. Individuals may enter the drawing at the stair climb or by sending a message to the event organizers at

www.facebook.com/Lancaster StairClimb before Sept. 13. Lauren said she hopes to take a check for the total raised via the helmet giveaway to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Md., after the climb. Lauren’s fundraiser comes at a crucial time for the NFFF, said Lancaster stair climb chair Scott Yuill. In addition to firefighters dying of the typical on-job causes, 58 individuals have died of causes related to COVID-19 in circumstances considered line-of-duty deaths. “They need the money now (to help the surviving families), but the number of stair climbs has been reduced drastically,” Yuill explained. “We need to have the climb so we can raise some money for their needs. … But we need to do it smartly.” Yuill said that the committee is preparing to be flexible in order to conduct the event in a

safe manner. Social distancing will be possible in the stadium, but there is the option to participate virtually as well. In the event that Lancaster County has returned to the red phase on Sept. 13, the climb will be canceled and the registration fees will be considered donations to the NFFF. “It’s important to me personally - remembering all the guys that went to work that morning thinking they have plans that evening with their families and didn’t get to do them,” Yuill commented. “Plus, I think the families like to see their loved ones are being remembered, that their loved ones aren’t forgotten.” Participants may register for the stair climb at http://events.fire hero.org/Lancaster or http:// lancasterstairclimb.org by Tuesday, Sept. 1. After Sept. 1, individuals may register at the event.

peruse and get comfortable with this format. Some are digitally native, but we tend to serve an older population and we want to give them time to warm up (to the process),” she said. “We will have a mailing that has step-bystep instructions.” People will be simultaneously bidding online. “You will get a notification that you have been outbid and you will have the option to bid again,” said Minardi. “All you do is click a button. You don’t have to go back in and register. You just say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’” The auction will close on Sept. 15. and whoever has the highest bid will win the item. “We will notify the winners on Sept. 16 if they won or lost the items,” Minardi said, noting that people will be asked to pick up their items at HCC in Lancaster. New items, quilts and sports memorabilia donations are being accepted at Hospice &

Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, by appointment only. Readers may call the Development Office at 717295-3900 to schedule a drop-off appointment. All proceeds from the virtual auction and donations from corporate sponsors will benefit HCC, a nonprofit hospice provider serving patients and families at end of life since 1980. In 2019, the organization provided hospice, palliative and supportive care for nearly 7,000 patients and families. Nearly 9,000 adults, teenagers and children received grief support from the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. Currently, the center’s support programs are being held virtually. Readers may visit www.hospicecommunity.org for more information. For more information about the auction, readers may visit www.LaborDayAuction.org or call 717-295-3900.

Labor Day Auction from pg 1 Items featured at the auction are donated by the community. “Typically, we will start collecting auction items the day after the auction for the following year,” Minardi explained. “We have a wonderful generous sponsor who has a warehouse space and they donate that. Sometimes we get high-end items like jewelry and original artwork, and those are stored in a secure location at hospice.” Discussions about the fate of the 2020 auction began in March soon after the stay-athome order was issued. “ We went out to a remote working location on March 17 and we talked about this incessantly from that time until (now),” said

Minardi. “We raise nearly $1 million, so it was not an easy decision to make. People have been coming for years and we did not want to give up on that.” On June 10, the decision was made to hold the auction virtually. This year, the auction will feature about 1,000 items. “We will auction off higher-end items quilts, artwork, jewelry, vacation getaways, gift baskets and sports memorabilia,” Minardi said. “We are in the process of photographing those items and building the website.” As part of the process, people will be able to visit the website, click on the items they are interested in and then bid on them. “People will (have time) to

matriculation of Jewish youths into adulthood at age 13 - she immediately turned to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), which, since 1992, has been fulfilling its mission to remember fallen firefighters and provide resources for their families as the survivors rebuild their lives. Lauren is familiar with the organization because Mark, a doctor, provides emergency medical support at the Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, which is a fundraiser for the NFFF. “9/11 was a terrible time for first responders, firefighters, and America as a whole,” Lauren explained. “People who lost their lives then and since then shouldn’t be forgotten. I’d like to honor their memory and their service.” “This was a cause Lauren chose on her own,” Mark said. “It really makes me very proud.”

Barlow is married to the former Kim Martin from New Holland. They have three adult children and five grandchildren. Kim teaches family and consumer science at Cocalico Middle School. dance, but he recognized that concerns for safety from SARS-CoV-2 may impact attendance for a while yet. Currently, MOPC is holding worship services in person at 10:30 a.m. While music is played during the service, singing is not encouraged. Attendees are seated in every other row in the sanctuary, or they may find places in the welcome center, fellowship hall, or even outdoors. A speaker in the bell tower enables individuals to sit in chairs in the parking lot or stay in their cars to hear the service. Barlow will be preaching a fourweek series on the book of Ruth in September. Before that, he will discuss basic tenets of Christian faith, such as evangelism, the need for God’s grace, and the purpose of the law and the rule of love. Barlow said he uses an expository style and looks at passages of

LC

erain Elementary School and make lap robes for veterans. The Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women host several fundraising dinners and a holiday bazaar to support local families in need, and the mission committee endeavors to send volunteers to assist a sister church in Tamshiyacu, Peru, at least once a year. “They have a really neat mission statement, Barlow commented, before reading, “To provide a place of fellowship where a community of believers come together to be spiritually renewed and enabled to effectively witness for Christ through service to others. MOPC will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2027. At the end of 2019, the church had 128 active members, with attendance averaging around 50. Barlow expressed a desire to increase church atten-

Providing pastoral care for members facing challenges in their health and living is one of three ways in which Barlow hopes to serve MOPC and its community. The other two are preaching the Gospel and teaching God’s Word along with supporting and encouraging the ministries of church members. “I want to be a cheerleader for their activities, Barlow remarked. He noted that the list of ways that MOPC members serve others attracted him to the church. “They love God, they love each other, and they love their community, Barlow said. Baby boomers preparing for the future, caregivers considering alternatives for loved ones, and seniors who want to be aware of their living and care options are invited to take part in the 50plus Living virtual open house, which will be held online from Saturday, Aug. 15, through Monday, Aug. 31, at www.50pluslivingvirtual openhouse.com. Participation in the virtual open house is free. Due to COVID-19 concerns, some 50-plus living campuses and agencies are not permitted to participate in live events, and some potential residents and clients are fearful of venturing out. Hosted by OLP Events, the 50plus Living virtual open house will enable interested individuals to virtually visit mature living communities and service providers online from the comfort of their home or office. Consumers considering their housing options will be able to browse the virtual open house, which showcases local housing, home care, and hospice organizations. Prospective residents and community and agency representatives from all over central Pennsylvania can log in and out of the event at will to share information and interact virtually. Throughout the 17-day online event, guests can learn about living and care options, connect with multiple living communities or care providers, view videos and/or photos of campuses, ask questions and have them answered on a personal basis, gain knowledge in order to make informed decisions, and make an appointment for an in-person tour when convenient. For more information on the 50plus Living virtual open house, readers may contact OLP Events at 717-285-1350.

COVID-19 crisis. In addition, many children throughout central Pennsylvania receive free or reduced-price lunches and breakfasts during the school year. With schools shut down since March due to COVID-19, many children have lost access to these meals. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. The grant will enable the food bank to continue to provide healthy, nutritious meals to children in need. Since the start of the COVID19 crisis in March, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has distributed more than 28 million pounds of food to those in

need in the 27 counties it serves. It is currently serving more than 175,000 individuals per month, including children, seniors and veterans. That is an increase from the 135,000 per month who relied on the food bank prior to March. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities in which it resides. Through its program Made-to-Share, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 600 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its sixstate footprint. Scrolling through the Instagram account @thejujubeanbakery, viewers would be forgiven for thinking they were looking at cakes made by a professional with years of experience. The shaped cakes are impeccably cut, the piping is steady, and the chocolate ganache drips attractively. However, the mastermind behind these creations - Julianna Giunta of Willow Street - has never worked in a commercial kitchen. In fact, Julianna will celebrate her 15th birthday in August. Julianna is the daughter of Jon and Lauren Giunta, and she has helped Lauren in the kitchen for as long as she can remember. When Julianna was around age 11, her grandmother challenged her to make cupcakes from scratch using lemon and cream cheese. The resulting product was a hit. “I really enjoyed myself and everyone really liked them. I think that’s when I really started to fall in love with baking,” Julianna recalled. To develop her techniques, Julianna turned to YouTube videos and baking shows on television, including competitions and how-to episodes. Celebrity baker Duff Goldman and wedding cake maven Sylvia Weinstock have been particularly influential.

“I love (Duff’s) detail work and how he makes the cakes to look like it’s actually the real thing he is creating,” Julianna said. “Sylvia Weinstock … does these beautiful floral cakes, and she started her baking business at age 50. These two bakers have amazing talent, and I push myself to be more like them technique-wise.” To get as good as Julianna is has required a lot of practice, which means a lot of cake. A lot. Thankfully, family members and friends have been thrilled to take Julianna’s creations off her hands. Starting a business was never in the plans, but after generous friends bought baking supplies so that Julianna could start saving for college, she decided to take that step. “Both they and my parents encourage me to do what I love,” Julianna remarked. “My friends and family knew that I loved to do this and helped me to start pursuing my dream.” Julianna is preparing to attend pastry school, with the goal of getting into the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, N.Y. After attending Lampeter-Strasburg High School for her freshman year, Julianna has opted to be homeschooled for the remainder of high school. She has already begun her sophomore year so that she can graduate early. Julianna is considering attending the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s baking and pastry arts program in order to participate in scholarship competitions and gain advantages for the CIA.

She named the business The Juju Bean Bakery based on her childhood moniker. “Ever since I was little, my family has called me by my nickname Juju or Juju Bee, so when I was trying to figure out a name, we came up with the idea of using my nickname and putting a ‘bean’ next to Juju so it’s like vanilla bean,” Julianna explained. The Giant Company announced on July 31 that more than $1 million was raised as part of its summer campaign in support of local Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. The campaign, which kicked off June 1, marks the highest fundraising effort for the organization in the history of the company. A partner of the nonprofit organization for almost 25 years, Giant has recently introduced several new ways for customers to support their local CMN Hospital beyond making a donation during checkout. Customers can now make donations by rounding up their purchase at self-checkout, donating CHOICE Rewards points and purchasing special reusable bags with a portion of each sale going to the charity. The company will continue raising funds for CMN Hospitals through the end of August. In March, to help provide assistance for the youngest members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic, Giant

PUBLIC AUCTION ANTIQUES - FURNITURE - COINS JEWELRY & BOX LOTS

The Pennsylvania Relief Sale, which supports the work of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), is an institution in the state. Held yearly at the Pennsylvania Farm Show building in Harrisburg, the event has been known to feature close to 400 handcrafted quilts, wall hangings, and comforters, along with opportunities to shop for handmade items and gifts and to bid on unique items during the Country Auction, Silent Auction, and Children’s Auction. The event is also known for homemade food and family-friendly activities. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the auction was canceled. Steven Stoltzfus of Leola, who has long been involved with the relief sale, along with a group of volunteers wanted to help make up for some of the funds lost due to the cancellation. “We’re holding just the coin auction, reported Stoltzfus. A variety of donated coins have been gathered to be sold at an auction that will be both live and online at the same time. The live auction will be held at the Bareville Fire Hall, 211 E. Main St., Leola, on Friday, Aug. 14, beginning at 5 p.m. At the same time, the auction will be held online through https://hibid.com. The auction preview will be held beginning at 4 p.m. The complexities of handling online bidding and live bidding simultaneously will be addressed by having two auctioneers working in conjunction with each other. “The way this works, there will be an auctioneer bid calling with people in the audience, and, in addition, there will be a clerk sitting nearby with the computer, explained Stoltzfus. Pre-bids may be placed online, with lots

closing live at 5 p.m. “If someone puts in a pre-bid, that is the starting bid. When we are auctioning a particular lot live, a person can be on the computer to enter live bids. Both internet bids and floor bids will be announced. “The clerk will report bids coming in by computer to the live auctioneer, said Stoltzfus, who noted that the bidding link will be posted at https://pa reliefsale.org. Lead coins in the auction will be a 1904 $2.50 gold piece, a 1997 American Eagle $5 gold coin, a one-tenth ounce gold piece, and a one-quarter ounce gold piece. A 10-ounce silver bar and an 1884-CC Morgan dollar will be sold, as will a 1925 Stone Mountain half dollar and 1923 Monroe/Adams centennial half dollar. An 1866 three-cent piece will go up for bids as well. “We will also have a nice selection of 2013 and 2020 Silver Eagles, said Stoltzfus. In addition to the coin auction, a food fundraiser will be held at the Bareville Fire Company on Aug. 14, beginning at 4 p.m. It will include wings, french fries, and a beverage sold as a meal. Food will be sold on a drivethrough or takeout basis. “We are hoping the income from the food will offset expenses of the auction to increase the coin auction profit, said Stoltzfus, who noted that some of the food is being donated. All profits from the sale will help to support the work of MCC, with the goal of sharing God’s love and compassion by helping to meet basic human needs and making efforts for peace and justice. COVID-19 safety procedures will be in place. More information about the sale may be found at the aforementioned website. Readers with specific questions may call 717-725-1383.
