Change of Pace South (COPS), a community women’s Bible study supported by the Friendship Foundation, will begin its winter session on Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence. Breakfast refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall prior to a time of worship and music in the church sanctuary. Four courses of study will be offered this session, including “God of Creation,” “Hoping for Something Better,” “Psalm 23: The Shepherd With Me,” and “Jesus Among Secular Gods.” “God of Creation: A Study of Genesis” by Jen Wilkin is a DVD-based study with a workbook that addresses deep questions: Where did everything come from? Why is the world so broken, and how can that brokenness be made right? The in-depth study of the first 11

chapters in Genesis will reveal a transcendent God and will aim to shape participants’ understanding of the Bible as a whole. The course will meet for a total of 13 weeks. The study of “Hoping for Something Better” by Nancy Guthrie will also meet for 13 weeks. According to Hebrews 11:40, God has something better planned for His children. The book of Hebrews was written to people who lived with disappointments and doubts and needed to see clearly what makes Jesus worthy of worship and pursuit. The thorough and practical book study of Hebrews aims to direct hope to Jesus. “Psalm 23: The Shepherd With Me” is a seven-week DVD-based study by Jennifer Rothschild that points women to the powerful tenets contained in the familiar Psalm, including that God is See Women’s Bible Study pg 3

Christmas Tree Recycling Set
Nuts ’n’ Bolts Of Consignment To Return By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church has slated the fourth annual Nuts ’n’ Bolts Of Consignment. This fundraising consignment sale, set for Saturday, Jan. 12, was originally targeted at male sellers and shoppers. “I thought, ‘We have all these yard sales and stuff women come to, wouldn’t it be interesting to have a sale that would attract men?’” event organizer Boni Henry recalled. “People look for it now and are hoping to come back.” Tools, sporting goods, gardening items, construction materials, fishing and hunting gear, and crafts will be of interest to all shoppers. Those items and much more will be available at the Nuts ’n’ Bolts Of Consignment event. The sale has expanded so that it includes an even wider variety of items such as antiques, furniture,

Some of the items that have appeared at previous sales included cornhole games, fishing rods, duck decoys, and
Amish-made items. As with any sale of this type, no one can predict what specific treasures might be found at the upcoming event. See Consignment Sale pg 7
County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Thursday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former See Christmas Trees pg 4

Working professionals accustomed to receiving tax returns can use that money to catch up on their retirement savings. Rather than spending tax returns or depositing them into traditional savings accounts, people can reinvest them in retirement accounts. Many people are aware they should be saving for retirement, but it can seem impossible in households where every dollar counts. By following several tips, however, people may be able to save more for retirement without making dramatic lifestyle changes. 1. Turn raises into retirement savings. Each time working professionals receive a raise, they should consider increasing the percentage of their income deposited into their retirement account. 2. Put bonuses to work. Professionals who receive bonuses can speak to their employer and request that their retirement contribution rates be increased when bonuses are issued. Many 401(k) retirement plans allow workers to contribute as much as 80 percent of their paychecks. While that is not sustainable for most people every pay period, increasing the

the Good Shepherd who provides the protection, comfort, guidance, rest, and companionship many women long to have. The study includes a workbook with daily personal assignments. The second seven-week study option will be “Jesus Among Secular Gods” by Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale. Through DVD and workbook lessons, the study aims to prepare participants to defend the hope of Christ against the cultural philosophies that are prevalent today, such as atheism, scientism, hedonism, relativism, pluralism, and humanism. A conversational approach will be encouraged in learning about these views and sharing the claims of Christ with others. The two seven-week studies will be followed by a six-week study of “Finding I AM: How Jesus Fully Satisfies the Cry of Your Heart” by Lysa TerKeurst. In addition to the Bible studies, a prayer group will be available for women to attend at any time. COPS is interdenominational and welcomes women from all generations, churches, backgrounds, and experiences. The group will meet regularly on Wednesday mornings for a total of 13 weeks throughout the winter and spring unless inclement weather would prompt a cancellation. Weather closings will be posted at www.changeofpacesouthpa.org. Women are encouraged to preregister at the group’s website. Registration may also be done in person on Jan. 16. The first line of defense against this sun damage is clothing. Covering up is easier in the winter, because it is cold, but the face, head, and neck tend to remain exposed yearround, and this is where most skin cancers occur. People should not forget their UVblocking sunglasses and broadbrimmed hat before heading out. Sunglasses protect the eyes while also fighting snow glare, and a hat keeps the head warm while keeping UV rays from damaging the scalp. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher should be applied daily to all exposed skin. People should make sure to cover oftenmissed spots like the tops of their ears, around the eyes, and near the hairline. Individuals should consider choosing a moisturizing sunscreen with ingredients like lanolin or glycerin to combat dry winter skin. Finally, people should try to avoid the peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and seek shade when they can. For more information, readers may visit www.skincancer.org.

It is easy to associate vigilant sun protection with summertime, when the sun is shining intensely. However, sun protection is necessary every day, regardless of the weather or time of year. Even when it is cold or overcast, UV rays that cause skin aging and skin cancer are reaching the skin. In the right winter weather conditions, people can sustain sun damage just as easily as during the summer. UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, are the strongest in the summer. However, UVB rays can burn and damage skin year-round, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice. Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light, so the rays hit twice, further increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging. UVA rays remain constant throughout the year and can penetrate through clouds and fog. UVA rays can also penetrate glass, so it is still possible to damage skin while spending a bright winter day indoors.

“We get a lot of different things,” Henry said. “It seems like it’s kind of morphed where some women come and bring things they want to sell too.” Te event will run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church social hall, with free coffee and snacks for shoppers. This year there will be a special “Mystery Tool or Antique.” Those who attend will have the opportunity to guess what it is. Correct entries will be given a prize. Consigners, who will retain 80 percent of the sale price, are still being sought. Anyone with items to sell should contact Henry to ensure a space will be available. She may be reached at 717-808-4534 or bohphen@outlook.com. Readers may also call the church office at 717-786-3402. Items should be tagged with prices and delivered to the church in the evening on Friday, Jan. 11. Sellers do not have to attend the sale. Unsold items must be picked up in the afternoon following the sale on Jan. 12. Proceeds from this event will go to the church’s mission team, with a goal of $500 in mind for this event. Henry described the church as mission-minded with projects and support assisting areas in this country and around the world. “We’ve been going to Peru every year for a long time. We have other mission projects too,” she said. In Peru, the church efforts have centered on the village of Tamshiyacu. “Our main project for many years was to try to get some clean water going,” Henry said. “Now we concentrate more on medical issues. They have issues with malaria, parasites and tuberculosis - we take them medical supplies. Every year when we go, we have some sort of project we work on.” Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church is located at 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The Nuts ’n’ Bolts Of Consignment event will be held indoors, but in the case of dangerous weather, there is a snow date of Saturday, Jan. 26. Notice of postponement as well as more information on the sale can be found at www.middleoctorara.org.

Show To Feature “Book Of Matthew Project” The Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, will host a show titled “The Book of Matthew Project” by artist Daehong Kim for First Friday, Jan. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. “The Book of Matthew Project” was conceived in June 2010 as a personal pledge to support a church ministry that was sending a group of young adults on a short-term service mission to South Korea. Kim committed to handwriting each verse from the Gospel of Matthew on individual cards, accounting for 1,071 verses. Kim also invited people to participate by contributing verses, and these verses and others were collected and applied on five canvases. The purpose of writing each verse was to facilitate a contemplative
mode of worship and to help Kim choose wonder, praise, and gratitude in response to a challenging time in his life. Kim is an American artist who was born in South Korea in the late 1970s. He took up studio art and music performance as a child. At age 7, he became fascinated with basic generative design in a computer programming class. He is an advocate of art as an agent for telling stories and as a medium of renewal. He considers art integral to the narrative of his personal pilgrimage in human portrait and faith. Attendees of the First Friday event will be able to meet the artist, read some of the handwritten verses, and enjoy snacks.
