Mares Win Holiday Tournament pg 8
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
At the beginning of summer 2006, Jim and Sharon Godfrey were in a good situation regarding their finances. They had five figures in savings and decided it was time to take care of some home repairs. Then, it seemed like everything that could go wrong did. At the start of autumn, the couple realized they had neglected to reserve funds to pay their union dues, then one child hit a deer with their car, and two weeks later, the second child hit a deer with their car. “We found ourselves living paycheck to paycheck,” Jim recalled. The pain of the Godfreys’ mistakes with money made Dave Ramsey’s financial principles look attractive, and after listening to Ramsey’s talk show on satellite radio, the couple decided to put
those principles into practice. In a decade, the couple had paid off four auto loans and a mortgage, and they retired early. “(Debt) feels like a monster is after you,” Mary Etta Reinhart mused, adding that there is hope. “You can get out of debt.” Jim and Mary Etta are the cocoordinators of the upcoming session of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, which Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren (MGCB) will host on Mondays from Jan. 28 to March 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jim is a former technology education teacher, and he will lead the classes, sharing plenty of anecdotes from his own experiences. Each session will also involve watching a DVD of instruction given by Ramsey. Attendees will learn about budgeting, saving, eliminating debt, and investing. See Financial Peace University pg 3
Co-coordinators Jim Godfrey (left) and Mary Etta Reinhart invite the public to join them for Financial Peace University, which will be offered on Mondays from Jan. 28 to March 25 at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren. A free preview will be held on Jan. 21.
Meeting Will Feature Heirloom Apple Expert Racing For Environmental Protection By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Muddy Run Park Deer Count,
John Bunker, who specializes in the heirloom apples of Maine, will be the featured speaker at the annual Backyard Fruit Growers winter meeting on Jan. 19 at the Farm and Home Center.
“The only apple I remember from my childhood was the Red Delicious someone gave me at Halloween. I felt ripped off that they didn’t give me candy,” recalled author and Maine apple historian John Bunker. “(At that time), I thought apples came in only red and green.” After Bunker grew up, graduated from college, and moved to Super Chilly Farm in Palermo, Maine, he discovered apple trees, specifically those ancient specimens that grow in backyards and in far-off fields throughout rural Maine. Appreciating a potential source of free food and seeing as no one did anything with the fruit, Bunker sought for and received permission to collect the windfalls. In the course of his collections, Bunker began learning about apples from the owners and soon came to a surprising realization. See Heirloom Apples pg 4
The Lancaster Group of the Sierra Club will hold its ninth annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, in scenic Lancaster County Central Park. The 3.1-mile event is caninefriendly, and participants may bring their
leashed dogs to run or walk with them. Approximately 210 runners and walkers registered for the race last January, and 45 well-behaved dogs either ran or walked with their owners. Scores of volunteers also were on hand to oversee the event. See Sierra Club 5K pg 11
Pets and people hit the pavement during the 2018 Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike. The ninth annual fundraiser for the Lancaster Group of the Sierra Club will be held in Lancaster County Central Park on Jan. 19. EPHRATA 1717 West Main St.

tournaments during the course of the year and was able to provide two Fish for Free days in 2018 on Memorial Day and on the Fourth of July. CWA also hosted the annual Armed Forces Day Event featuring Heroes on the Water and Warriors on the Water. A total of more than 125 active-duty military members, Reserve members, and military veterans, along with first responders and their families, enjoyed a day on the reservoir. The reservoir has developed a reputation as a good place to catch bass. It is also home to yellow and white perch, white crappie, walleye, perch, catfish, and many varieties of sunfish. In addition, the Octoraro Reservoir is popular location for birdwatching and has been designated an Important Bird Area by the
Audubon Society. The Octoraro Reservoir is a natural resource that not only provides active and passive recreational opportunities for residents in the region, but also serves as a source of water to the Chester Water Authority’s more than 43,500 customers after it is treated and sanitized at the nearby Octorara Water Treatment Plant. Financial Peace University from pg 1 Jim and Mary Etta are excited to be able to offer child care because it removes a barrier to participation. “Parents sometimes say, ‘We would love to attend, but we don’t have child care,’” Mary Etta said. “If they’re trying to get out of debt, spending (additional) money on child care is kind of (counterproductive),” Jim pointed out. A free preview will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21. During the session, attendees will watch introductory videos, pick up class materials, and ask questions of Jim and Mary Etta. “The class is interesting, and Jim is a good teacher,” Mary Etta commented. “The strength of the class is in the interaction. You can come to class, share your struggles and successes, and bounce ideas off each other.” “When you’re finally out of debt, (the program) gives you permission to spend, and it gives you financial peace,” Jim added. “Those are two words that don’t typically go together: ‘financial’ and ‘peace.’” While the series will be offered at a Christian church, folks of all religious backgrounds are welcome to attend. Jim described the program as “not heavily faith-based,” but Ramsey does occasionally refer to biblical ideals. “Until I listened to (Ramsey), I didn’t realize how much the Bible talks about finances,” Jim remarked. Child care will be offered at no charge for youngsters up to age 12 by members of MGCB’s children’s outreach ministry.

“I realized pretty quickly there were more than red ones and green ones. There were thousands (of varieties), Bunker recalled. Thus began a lifetime of fascination with the heirloom apples of Maine. Bunker has spent nearly five decades on Super Chilly Farm, developing an off-the-grid homestead and community-supported agriculture program. He has collected information about as many of the different varieties of apples growing in Maine as possible, and in 1984, he started Fedco Trees to encourage others to plant trees and to fund his travels. Bunker writes about his tree-tracking adventures in the Fedco Trees catalog, and he has published a book, “Not Far From the Tree: A Brief History of the Apples and the Orchards of Palermo, Maine. In addition to scouring Maine, Bunker has visited old orchards in Europe, and he has journeyed to Kazakhstan, which is the home of the ancestors of the
modern apple. “Most of the Europeans who came here had apple orchards, Bunker remarked. “Johnny Appleseed was a real person. Every seed that he planted was genetically unique. From those millions of seedlings that were planted in the United States (by Appleseed and other Europeans), they would graft (preferred types) onto a root stock to give to their neighbor or have a second one. Around the Civil War, we had about 25,000 varieties of apples. Bunker noted that commercial fruit growers have focused on apples ideal for eating raw, so many of those varieties have either died out or become rare, and folks are missing out. “There are so many uses for apples: cooked, baked, in sauce, or cider, Bunker said. “I eat apples daily. I make sauce every morning. The apple (variety) doesn’t look pretty, but it stores well in the cold cellar, and it doesn’t need any spices or sugar. But if you ate
(that apple variety) raw, it would be awful. Bunker will discuss apples, particularly heirloom varieties, at the annual Backyard Fruit Growers winter meeting on Saturday, Jan. 19. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, and the doors will open at 9:15 a.m. Admission will be free of charge, but donations will be accepted. Attendees may bring lunch or purchase it at the FFA event held next door. Additionally, empty Mason bee tubes will be available during the lunch break. While Bunker will be the primary speaker at the event, Tim Elkner will also be on hand to discuss the spotted lanternfly invasion and the current state of the quarantine. For more information about the meeting, readers may call Backyard Fruit Growers vice president Andrew Weidman at 717-813-1874 or visit www.byfg.org.

This year’s theme, “Why We Can’t Wait: Achieving Economic Equity,” will be championed through Bryant’s address. Bryant is the founder of Operation Hope, a nonprofit financial inclusion organization, and he was previously named one of Time magazine’s “50 Leaders for the Future.” He is an entrepreneur, an author, and a philanthropist. “The 2019 MLK Breakfast Com- Pictured on front: mittee, chaired by Phil Wenger of John Hope Bryant

Fulton Bank and composed of local businesspeople, nonprofit partners, and community volunteers, felt that John Hope Bryant’s passion for achieving economic equity would be impactful for the 31st annual breakfast,” said Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County chief development officer Kristy Aurand. Crispus Attucks is a program of CAP, and it strives to be a leader in efforts to ensure equity for all people who call Lancaster home, Aurand said. “As we honor and celebrate the great achievements of Dr. King, we recognize our responsibility to live his legacy,” Aurand continued. “We are looking forward to (hearing) a message (from Bryant) that encourages urgency in eliminating barriers to economic equity in our community, along with guiding principles on creating systems change. We hope attendees will walk away enthusiastic about continuing this important conversation and ready to roll up their sleeves and work with us toward advancing economic equity.” There is a cost to attend the MLK Breakfast, and reservations are required. Young Mules Battle Section-Leading Bucks by Mona Steinhauer
With just four returning starters (Dominic Flatt, Joey Vandegriff, Nick Yannutz, Chase Charles), and enough wrestlers to all but fill the lineup, first year head coach Tony Mendez is putting a lot of emphasis on improvement this year, and not necessarily wins and losses. “We barely fill a lineup,” Mendez, an assistant to former head coach John Little for 18 seasons. “Injuries
and illnesses have hurt, especially since we don’t have others to fill in. We lost 70% of last year’s squad to graduation so we are putting a lot of emphasis on effort and commitment,” he continued. “We have a dedicated staff (Matt Jansen, Ed Spiller, Joe Welk) working on improving each wrestler, experienced and inexperienced, as the season progresses.” The Mules, without two starters (one to injury, another to illness) opened the 2019 season with a 51-26

home loss to Conestoga Valley on January 2. Despite the lopsided final, there were bright spots along the way. Chase Charles opened the night with a 5:04 fall over Cameron Kistler (126). Unfortunately, CV responded with two forfeit wins and five falls. Two of those falls came in the third period. At 195, Nick Yannutz halted CV’s run with a 1:14 fall over Eddie Lopez, cutting the lead to 42-12. The Bucks countered with a 7-2 decision by Leo Marente over Connor Charles before picking up a fall at 285 over Nate Neuhauser. “Nate hasn’t wrestled since seventh grade,” noted Mendez. “He is a hard worker and a positive kid. He will continue to improve simply because of his work ethic.” Solanco closed the night with three straight wins. Dominic Flatt (106), down 3-2 in the first period, pinned Trent Ruble 49 ticks into the second period while Jackson Houghton (113) and Kyle Morrison (120) scored back-to-back majors, 10-2 and 16-7 respectively. “Jackson beat a kid (Keaton Fischer) who is 11-4 on the season,” stated Mendez. “He went 1-1 with that same kid last year in junior high. And Kyle, back wrestling after two years out, also beat a tough kid in Rafael Rodriguez.” Solanco closed the 2018 portion of their season at the Trojan Wars Tournament in Chambersburg on December 29. Yannutz finished in 5th place and Flatt was sixth. “Dominic and Nick both advanced to the semifinals before falling into the wrestle backs and placing,” Mendez noted. “Jackson and Ronnie Fulton both battled but lost one round before placing. Chase Charles and Nate Neuhauser also wrestled tough but fell short of placing.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL With five returning starters stepping onto the court this season, it should come as no surprise that Solanco has sprinted to an early 8-4 record overall. They wrapped up the 2018 portion of their schedule by winning their own Holiday Tournament December 28-29. The Mares, after dispatching Penn
Manor 67-41, survived Red Lion 39-37 on Grace Kreider’s jumper from the elbow with three seconds remaining. “Grace hit a big shot,” said head coach Chad McDowell. “It’s a shot she makes all the time at practice and as soon as it left her hand I knew it was in.” The Mares fell behind early in this one. Red Lion jumped out to a 20-13 lead at the half before Solanco engineered their come-back, outscoring the 6A school from York County 13-8 in the third quarter and 13-9 in the fourth. With 2:30 left on the clock, and the score tied at 37-37, Red Lion ran the clock down to 15 seconds before calling timeout. When both teams returned to the floor, Solanco called time out. “I wanted to set up our defense to defend their offensive set,” stated McDowell. After the timeout, and stingy defense by the hosts, Red Lion failed to inbound the ball and was whistled for five seconds, leaving Solanco with possession and setting the stage for Kreider’s game-winning bucket. “This is a great win for our program,” said McDowell. “We needed a complete team effort and got it. We had some foul trouble in the third quarter but the bench stepped up big during key stretches.” Kreider, who poured in a gamehigh 22 in the win over Penn Manor, netted 11 points and hauled in five
rebounds. She was voted as the tournament MVP. Jade Eshleman followed with 7 points and led with 7 rebounds while Jenna Dombach and Aleksa Burger each tallied six points and Jess Cabrera added 5. After a slim 13-11 first quarter lead against Penn Manor, Solanco turned up the defense, turned numerous Comet turnovers into easy layups and pushed the lead to 42-21 at the half. ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition crucial. Jenna Dombach led that charged with a 7-for-10 effort. “We converted 11-of-16 free throws down the stretch,” noted McDowell. “That has been an emphasis this year.” Kreider led all scorers with 18 points, Burger tossed in 14 and P. Phillips hit a season-high 9. Cabrera added 8 as the Mares improved to 3-2 in Section Three. “Paige had a solid game and gave us our spark early,” McDowell said. “Grace picked up two fouls early and Paige stepped in and did a great job.” The Mares got off to another strong start Saturday afternoon at the West York Basketball Showcase against Spring Grove but a 20-26 effort at the free throw line by the hosts was enough to spark them to a 60-51 victory. Despite a 20-12 first quarter lead, the Mares were outscored 31-17 in the middle two frames to fall behind for good.
“We just could not buy a basket,” recalled McDowell, “and we had too many turnovers. And it didn’t help that they got to the free throw line three times more than we did (26-9). When you make more field goal than your opponent (20-17), you expect to win the game.” Cabrera led the double-digit scorers with 17 points, including three treys. Burger added 16 and Kreider netted 11. “This was a great experience, playing on a neutral court against a quality district qualifying team,” said McDowell. “We will use this game to build for future games that have bigger rewards.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL After finishing last year with a 4-17 overall record, the boys’ basketball will look to senior Derek Kreider for leadership. Kreider, one of four seniors on the squad, logged the most starting minutes last year. But the Mules are small, with just one player,
Tyler Whisman, over 6-feet. In the newly aligned L-L League, now with five sections, the Mules entered 2019 with a 2-2 Section Three mark, already one win better than last year’s 1-13 league record. But in the opening game of the new year, Solanco struggled against visiting Garden Spot, suffering an 81-58 loss. Despite falling behind early, 23-12 in the first quarter, the rest of the frames were more than competitive, with the Spartans never finishing with more than a six point edge. Solanco exploded for 20 fourth quarter points but couldn’t hold off the visitors. Spot got 16 from Keontae Nunn, who finished with a season-high 34, and netted 22 for the frame to close out the win. Kreider poured in a season-high 23, including nine in the fourth quarter, and Carson Kilgore, who netted nine in the first half, settled for 13. Zed Baker and Zach Wiker combined for 14 as the Mules fell to 2-3 in Section Three (3-8 overall).
Solanco, without head coach Scott Long, capped the 2018 season with a 68-64 consolation overtime victory over Conestoga Valley in their own Holiday Tournament on December 29. “We jumped out to a quick 66-58 lead in the overtime period,” recalled assistant coach Caleb Graves who is filling in for Long who is out due to his wife giving birth to their daughter, Brynlee Joy, five weeks early. “Then we missed several easy layups and CV closed the gap. We missed some free throws late as well but managed to hand on for the win.” Early on, it was the Bucks, who did not hit a single three-pointer in the game, that took an early lead, sprinting to a 22-16 first quarter advantage. “We were giving up too many points in the paint,” stated Graves. “We talked about that at halftime and in the second half we used our full court pressure to close the deficit.” Kreider, whose 3-ball gave Solanco the lead

late in the game, finished with 15 points, including four triples. Zed Baker, however, netting a team-high 18 and Zach Wiker added a dozen. Solanco dropped in 25 field goals on the day and held the visitors to 20. CV, however, drained 18-of-30 free throws to keep the game close. “I was proud of the team’s effort to continue playing hard when the shots weren’t falling,” said Graves. “It was an all-out team with from start to finish with contributions from underclassmen as well as upperclassmen who have not played as much this season.” The Mules fell into the consolation game after suffering a 56-37 opening round loss to Penn Manor. The Comets outscored the hosts in all four quarters, including a 12-4 second frame run that pushed the lead to 25-14 at the break. Kreider, with 10 points, was Solanco’s only double-digit scorer. Jalen Henry followed with seven and Baker and Whisman added six each.

videos, and music geared toward encouraging positive marriage experiences. Santiago said that the Chapmans’ music has spoken to his own marriage to his wife, Pam. “The song ‘The Ships Are Burning’ talks about (the metaphor of) a couple (that) gets married (and sails) to a deserted island,” said Santiago. He explained that some couples dock their ships, but that the song recommends burning the ships because “there’ll be no turning back for you and me.” “When Pam and I got married, this song spoke volumes to me,” said Santiago. “I wanted to make that type of commitment to her (because) no matter how many times we bump heads, we don’t quit on (making the) journey together.” RTCM strives to help individuals who have been traumatized through abuse and who have turned to abusing chemicals or have developed other kinds of addictions. The ministry aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. RTCM has graduated 10 clients in the last year, and four more are due to graduate the day before the banquet. The ministry was founded in 2015 and accepted its first clients in 2016. The ministry has four livein staff members at its Lancaster facility, which Santiago believes
is necessary for accountability and success. “We will end 2018 in the black, which is good financially. We are thankful for that,” said Santiago. Santiago has many years of experience working with individuals fighting addictions. “I tell them, ‘I will meet you where you are,’” Santiago said, adding that moving from bondage to obedience to freedom means exposing their true selves. “The bottom line is that as long as you’re not dealing with the trauma (in your past), the pain ... drives you to (bad decisions),” said Santiago. “That’s the ritual … the escape.” According to Santiago, many clients wear a false self and keep their real self hidden. The National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will host a TIMEtalks presentation from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 19. The topic will be the Engle monumental clock. In the late 19th century, a short-lived type of clock — the monumental clock — enchanted the American public. Large, complicated, and painstakingly handcrafted, the clocks were made to awe and entertain. Between 1875 and 1900, more than two dozen of these clocks toured the United States and Europe. The first known monumental clock made in the U.S. was the Engle monumental clock, finished in 1878. Taking 20 years to complete and marketed as “the eighth wonder of the world,” it is 11 feet high, 8 feet
wide, and 3 feet deep. The Engle clock indicates the day of the week, current month, phase of the moon, and current tides. It has three towers, two organ movements, and 48 moving figures that comprise a unique cast of biblical characters, a group of soldiers from the American Revolution, and others. The clock toured across the eastern U.S. for 70 years before
disappearing. The Engle clock was later discovered in a barn. It is now fully restored and resides at the museum. The presentation will include a full history of the clock, its creator, and the restoration process and a full demonstration of the Engle clock with a thorough discussion of all its functions. Orchestra Plans Concert
ARRIVING LATE?
The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will present the third concert of its 72nd season on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 3 and 8 p.m. at the historic Fulton Theatre, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The concert will include Maurice Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and Strings; Serge Koussevitzky’s Double Bass Concerto, featuring the LSO’s principal double bassist, Brent Edmondson; and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and Strings was a commission from the Érard Company, one of the first harp manufacturers from the 1800s. In 1905, the company asked Ravel to write a piece to display Érard’s pedal harp’s expressive range and to promote sales of the instrument. Ravel quickly composed the work in a matter of days in order to attend an extended sailing vacation with friends to Belgium, Holland and Germany. In the chaos of preparing for the long voyage, the score became lost. It was recovered when a young musician found it at a local shop where Ravel dropped it while purchasing

instrument’s repertoire. It is also a prime example of Russian Romanticism. Koussevitzky dedicated the concerto to his fiancée and gave its premiere in Moscow. Once Koussevitzky permanently put aside the bass in 1929, the work was unperformed for many years. Alfredo Antonini, a leading Italian-American symphony conductor and composer of the mid-1900s, brought the piece to light a few years after Koussevitzky’s death, and it remains a staple concerto today. By the early 1800s, Beethoven was considered the world’s leading composer. Beethoven wrote his Seventh Symphony from 1811 to
1812, completing it in April. It was one of his most popular symphonic pieces and premiered on Dec. 8, 1813. The performance was a benefit for soldiers wounded in the battle of Hanau a few months earlier and was possibly one of Beethoven’s most successful performances. After its premiere, the Seventh Symphony was repeated three times in the following 10 weeks. The symphony is characterized by its dance-like elements and sense of frenzy. Koussevitzky was a prominent conductor and well known for his 25-year tenure as music director for the Boston Symphony from 1924 to 1949. Before he turned his career toward conducting, Koussevitzky started out as a touring double bass virtuoso. It was during this period that Koussevitzky composed the Concerto for Double Bass.
