Burns Night Celebration To Feature All Things Scottish By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Lovers of everything Scottish will relish spending an evening at historic Beale Manor in celebration of beloved poet Robert Burns. Burns Night at Historic Beale Manor will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Victorian-style mansion house, located at 200 S. Church St., Parkesburg. Beginning at 6 p.m., visitors will arrive to the music of a piper. The festivities will go into full swing with a traditional haggis ceremony, where the haggis will be brought into the company and Burns’ poem “Address to a Haggis” will be read. Harpist Kendrah Tozzo will provide music before and during the buffet dinner that will feature Scottish fare, including haggis, smoked salmon, salad,

trifle, shortbread, cock-a-leekie (leeks and chicken) soup and neeps and tatties (mashed yellow rutabagas or turnips and potatoes). Those who attend are invited to get into the spirit of the evening by wearing their family tartans, whether in a kilt, scarf or tie. Dress for the event is semiformal. Following dinner, there will be additional entertainment, including a musical program by Charlie Zahm entitled “A Tribute to Robert Burns.” There will be toastings, readings of Burns’ work and a sing-along of Burns’ songs, concluding with his popular “Auld Lang Syne.” This is the second annual Burns Night presented by the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation, but this year marks the first time the event will be held at Beale Manor. Writing A Way Through Trauma Room To Grow Service Dog Program Moves To Larger Facility

Writeface, a local nonprofit organization that offers free writing workshops to veterans, has announced its 2019 winter/spring schedule. Folks do not need to be a writer or an artist to participate. Writeface strives to provide a safe space for veterans, in the company of other veterans, to explore their inner landscape by using proven writing techniques to become reacquainted with aspects of themselves that were lost in battle. “Our goal, first and foremost, is always to create a safe environment for veterans to explore and address any difficulty they may be experiencing in their present life that may have roots in the past,” said Annie Ginder, who cofounded Writeface with Scott Hower and serves as a facilitator. “The

When UDS Foundation moved from its previous home in Greenfield to 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, the space available for the service dog program more than doubled. The new facility includes a kennel with space for 12 dogs, a cuddle room for puppies, and a large training room. According to Lori Breece, UDS service dog program manager, 12 puppies per year are brought into the program, which takes several years to turn an eight-week-old ball of fluff into a dog capable of giving a person with a disability a chance for greater independence. In addition to serving individuals, many UDS dogs are being sent to schools where they provide student support. “Since we have been here (in See UDS Service Dogs pg 7

Sully, the newest UDS Foundation service dog trainee, was named in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush. “Most of our events that we do have a Scottish or Celtic theme because of the Covenanters, Scotch-Irish and Scottish who settled in the county, said Donna McCool, foundation board member. “For anyone that is interested in Scotland or Roberts Burns, this should be a fun event. The mission of the foundation is the preservation of the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church. Located at 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville, the church was originally constructed in 1752 and is considered the oldest Covenanter church in America. The church structure was rebuilt on the same foundation in 1849. A Presbyterian academy was later added to the building. At one point, that building became the Bart High School. Today, it is used for a summer

church service, concerts and the foundation’s Scottish Festival. The foundation is independent from the Presbyterian church, and it focuses on the historical nature of the structure. Most recently, the foundation replaced the north wall of the church, and there are other projects still to come. “The church itself is in pretty good shape, but there’s always something (in need of repair) with a building that old, McCool said. Tickets for Burns Night must be purchased by Wednesday, Jan. 30. For more information and a link to purchase tickets, readers may search for “Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation on Facebook and choose “Events. Information is also available by calling McCool at 610-593-6989 or by visiting www.oldcovchurch.com.

Atglen Church from pg 1

By Francine Fulton

After being closed for several months last summer, congregation members at Atglen Missionary Baptist Church have announced that the church has reopened. The church, located at Main and Dallas streets in Atglen, is now holding Sunday services at 11 a.m. The worship leader is the Rev. Joe Newsome. According to church member Dora Yates of East Fallowfield, the historic church was built in 1858. “The church was started by Hephzibah Baptist Church in the 1800s as Glen Run Baptist Church,” she explained. “In 1858, they vacated the church where Glen Run Cemetery is located and built the present building in the town of Atglen.” The vacated church building at Glen Run slowly deteriorated and was later taken down. A chapel was built at the entrance to the cemetery in 1890. The chapel is still used for funeral services and special events. After a series of pastors through the years, Atglen Missionary Baptist Church’s most recent leader was the Rev. Charles Montgomery, who served at the church until June of 2018. “The membership had dwindled, and the church (closed its doors) in June,” said Yates. “On Nov. 4, we began

nent pastor can be found. The Rev. Newsome is not the permanent pastor, but he is willing to stay as long as we need him.” Yates said that the current church congregation is composed of new members and those who attended the church prior to its closing, including her and her husband, Ernest. “We attended there years and years ago, so we have come back to help,” she said. With the exception of stained-glass windows that were added in the 1970s, the church building has remained unchanged since it was built. “It’s a beautiful building,” Yates said. “Back in the 1970s and ’80s a lot of maintenance work was done on the building and the stained-glass windows were put into place. They were just frosted windows before that.” All are welcome to attend the 11 a.m. services, which feature music, Scripture readings and prayer. “We have an organ and a piano but no one to play them, so everything is a cappella,” Yates said. “We open with song, then we have prayer and an offering. Pastor Joe then brings the sermon. His sermon is based on the Scripture we read that day.” She said future plans call for the church to have a choir and possibly add more services. “As the church grows, we will open early for Sunday school and have mid-week services and Sunday night services,” she said, adding, “Pastor Joe announced that on April 10 through 14 we will have a five-day revival meeting with special singing each night and concluding on April 14 with Communion (at the Sunday service).” For more information, readers may search for “Atglen Missionary Baptist Church” on Facebook.

Congregation members at Atglen Missionary Baptist Church gathered for services on Nov. 4, 2018, when the church reopened its doors for a Sunday worship service at 11 a.m.

at a Pennsylvania correctional facility. Puppies live with their inmate handlers around the clock, learning up to 50 commands. At the age of one year, the dogs return to Lancaster. For the next six months, they live in a volunteer puppy home. “(The dogs) attend weekly outings and training sessions, and they will go out in the community so they can get socialization,” explained Breece. At the age of 18 months, the dogs are sent to trainers for six months of specialty training. Smith explained that many of the tasks the dogs perform are extensions of actions that come naturally to Labradors, such as retrieving and tugging, which make up 95 percent of the working service dog force. “A lot of the main job is retrieval from the floor or the counter or helping pay,” she said, adding that dogs tug open doors, carry bags that are too heavy (for their client), and remove articles of clothing, such as socks. “They push elevator buttons and handicappedaccessible buttons and turn light switches on and off.” The newest puppy in the UDS program has been named Sully in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush and was photographed lying near his master’s casket during the funeral services in early December. UDS’ Sully is in need of a sponsor, which can be a local individual, organization, or business, to cover his two-year training. Breece is also looking for a sponsor for the dog program’s new training room. Readers who would like to learn more about sponsorship and volunteer opportunities with UDS may visit www.ud services.org.

the new location), we have added several clients in less than a year, including three or four schools,” said Breece. “We are so pleased with the pups-in-the-classroom opportunity. Our vision would be a dog in every school or at least every district.” In schools, dogs serve students with multiple disabilities, but they also serve in learning support classrooms. Kristy Smith, service dog program coordinator with UDS, said that dogs help with physical therapy or with fine motor skill issues, but they also aid students struggling with “the emotional aspects of school and life’s challenges.” Breece added that in some classrooms, time with a dog can be an incentive. “For some of those students who are more challenged, it’s a calming influence, and they can work toward time with the dog as a reward,” she said. Smith noted that currently UDS dogs are present in Cocalico, Ephrata, Penn Manor, and Northern York County school districts. “Each dog has a teacher or principal they go home with each night as the main handler, but we ask the schools to have a group of handlers,” she explained. Having a group of handlers allows a dog to work in multiple rooms. Breece noted that having a dog in a school affects the atmosphere of the building. “It changes the lives of the faculty by changing the environment behind the cement walls,” she said. “We’d like to see more dogs in schools.” A service dog’s training begins when it becomes part of the BARKS Prison Program, through which it is trained by an inmate

BOYS’ BASKETBALL Turnovers reared their head and an experienced Lampeter-Strasburg squad took advantage last Tuesday in a 53-36 home win over visiting Solanco. “We turned the ball over on three of our first five possessions,” said assistant coach Caleb Graves. “And we didn’t communicate enough on defensive end during the first half.” The Pioneers converted those turnovers and jumped out to a 19-5 lead after eight minutes and never looked back. L-S held a commanding 31-9 lead at the break which proved pivotal as the Mules tightened things up in the second half and outscored the visitors 27-22. “We played with better pace and attacked the rim better in the second half,” said Graves. “The bright spot was Colesen Shaeffer who started his first varsity game, contributed 11 points and played excellent on ball defense during the second half. Ryan Smith also played good minutes during the second half and scored his first varsity points on a corner 3. Eshleman again scored on a miss, giving the Mares a 34-31 lead with 1:38 left. The Pioneers turned the ball over three more times and Solanco converted six straight free throws, four by Jenna Dombach (7 points, 7 rebounds) to pull away for good. “Unforced turnovers in the fourth and lack of box outs for put backs at the wrong time hurt,” said Pioneer head coach Tony Fink. “They’ve been chasing us for two years. They want what we don’t want to give up, the section title. We can’t take anyone lightly.” Both teams came out cautiously, and the first quarter ended in an 8-8 tie. They traded points backand-forth through the second with neither squad leading by more than two. A pair of free throws (Solanco was 12-for-21 for the game) by Cabrera put Solanco in front, 14-13 at the break.

L-S got going a bit in the third. Holmes hit a pair of threes, the second giving them a 21-16 lead, the biggest of the night. But the last four minutes belonged to Solanco. Dombach drilled a trey that cut the lead to two and Emma Gochnauer, who finished with nine points, followed with a bucket in the paint. But a pair of free throws by Kreider and a steal and a layup by Cabrera tied the game once again, setting the stage for Solanco’s fourth quarter takeover. “Definitely a big win for our program,” said head coach Chad McDowell. “And I didn’t realize they had a 25 game league winning streak going either. Makes the win a little more special. “I thought our defense stepped up in the fourth quarter and we were able to contest the majority of their three point shots,” he added. “And limiting Gochnauer to nine points was huge. She has had some big games

against us in the past.” Rebounding also proved to be key as the Mares hauled in 35 for the game, 13 on the offensive end. They finished with eight second chance points and six came in the second half, all by Eshleman, who netted ten for the game. She and Aleksa Burger (4 points) hauled in ten rebounds each. “This was a complete team effort,” McDowell added. “We have some really big games coming up so we need to use this momentum and we need to be ready to play night in and night out. Section Three is going to be a race until the end. “An added shout out to the SLC Blackhole and the pep band for their positive support,” he said. The JV team did not fare quite as well, dropping a 43-37 result against L-S. Sammi Jackson led the home team with 8 points. Ilynd Rapant added 6.

The girls’ improved to 5-2 in Section Three with a solid 47-34 home win over Cocalico on Jan. 11. With eight players reaching the scoring column, Solanco led from start to finish and outscored the visitors in all but three quarters. Their 12-5 opening quarter provided momentum. After a 7-7 third frame, the Mares finished with a 13-10 run to wrap up the victory. “It’s great when you can get a lot of girls involved within the flow of the offense,” stated McDowell. “Grace and Kara had several steals in the second quarter that led to easy transition buckets.” Holding a 34-24 lead after three quarters, Cocalico cut it to 41-34 midway through the fourth. The Mares responded with tighter defense and focus and held the visitors scoreless through the remainder of the game. “Jess, Paige and Aleksa all hit big three’s at key times in that fourth

ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition Zed Baker and Dawson Kreider each scored four and Carson Kilgore, along with Smith, added three each. On the road again Friday, another slow start proved to be Solanco’s Achilles heel. Cocalico held the Mules to a combined 20 points over the first three quarters while dropping in 39 points at the other end and settling for a 47-30 victory. The Mules outscored the Eagles 10-8 in the fourth quarter but it was too little, too late. “We weathered their first quarter lead (24-15) and closed the gap to 56-54 with five minutes left, when Jalen fouled out,” recalled Graves. “They went on an 11-0 run, partially due to fouling down the stretch, but losing Jalen, who was a major reason we closed the deficit to two, took away our ability to guard the ball aggressively and attack the paint,” he added. “Ryan came in with excellent minutes off the bench.” Kreider led the visitors with 8 points while Kilgore and Baker finished with 4 points each. Sheaffer and Wiker and Dan Herr each hit once from three point range. In their third straight road game, the Mules battled Palmyra Saturday afternoon as part of the L-L vs Mid Penn Showcase at Manheim Central. Palmyra dropped in four of their nine treys on the day in the first quarter and jumped out to a 24-15 lead. The

next two frames were dead even with both teams tallying 30 points each. Palmyra, however, extended their lead with a 15-9 fourth quarter advantage. Baker, with a consistent day, scored in every frame and finished with 18 points but it wasn’t enough to catch Palmyra’s Jake Wagner who recorded 24 points, 19 in the first half. Kreider also reached double figures with 15, Kilgore netted 6 and Henry and Wiker combined for 10. WRESTLING The Mules, on the road last Wednesday, Jan. 9, secured its second Section One victory with a convincing 49-21 effort against Warwick. Five falls and a pair of forfeits added to the cushion. “I was thinking the match could go either way, but one we could win if we had everyone wrestle tough,” stated head coach Tony Mendez. “We needed a total team effort and for the most part got one. As a coach, you always find aspects we still need to improve on.” After a double forfeit opened the match at 113, two straight falls gave Solanco a lead they would never relinquish. Jackson Houghton pinned Marshall Adams (120) in 2:41 and Chase Charles (126) followed, putting Logan Bortner to his back in 2:21.

Joey Vandegriff’s 3-1 decision over Mateo Chacon at 132 provided more

momentum. Tied going into the third, the junior scored a takedown to go in front. “That was a big match for Joey and the team,” said Mendez. “Once he got the lead, he did a nice job at keeping Chacon on the mat and worked to keep him on bottom.” Warwick forfeited to Ronnie Fulton at 138 and Donavan Myers secured Solanco’s third fall of the night, decking Christopher Connor in 2:28, extending the lead to 27-0. The hosts quickly countered, earning forfeit points at 152 and securing falls at 160 and 170 to cut the lead to 27-18. But Solanco finished strong, winning four of the last five bouts to earn the victory. Robert Castagna’s 9-1 major over Kyle Baker (182) halted Warwick’s momentum while a 1:23 fall by Nick Yannutz (195) over Charles Lumene provided momentum and clinched the team win. The Warriors earned a 7-1 decision at 220 but then forfeited the 285 bout. Dominic Flatt 4:47 fall at 106 capped the scoring. “The falls helped the team score but also the momentum going into the next match,” Mendez stated. Those pins kept coming on Saturday at the Dutchmen Duals in Annville. The Mules averaged six falls in each match and finished the day with a perfect 5-0 record. They defeated Northeastern 26-9,

Middletown 42-31, Annville-Cleona 57-24 and CD East 57-24 to run the table in their pool. The Comets matched their effort and both were slated to face off in the finals but since the two squads recently met, Solanco took on West York and the Comets tackled A-C. Both squads won with the Mules pushing out to a 27-0 advantage before winning 51-27. “Our goal, if we all wrestled hard, was to go 5-0,” stated Mendez. “I was happy with their performance, but more excited to get most of our guys competitive matchups.” Almost every wrestler in the lineup secured at least one fall on the day. Yannutz, with 4 falls and a forfeit, went 5-0. Flatt also went undefeated with 3 falls and 2 forfeits. Kyle Morrison, Vandegriff (with 4 falls), Fulton, Myers, Castagna and Neuhauser all went 4-1 with a combined 15 falls. Houghton and Charles both recorded 3 pins and finished 3-2.
