Introducing The Mother-Son Night Of Fun By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Boys enrolled in Solanco School District’s elementary and middle schools, along with their adult female family figures, are invited to attend the first-ever Mother-Son Night of Fun on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at George A. Smith Middle School, 645 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. Activities will be set up throughout the school, with plenty of opportunities for youngsters and adults to expend some energy. Attendees are advised to wear appropriate clothing and shoes for being active. Basketball, a lacrosse toss, cornhole, dancing, mini-bowling, Wii games, and Minute-to-Win-Itstyle games will be offered, along with more calm activities like board and
card games, building with Legos, and a selfie booth. Light refreshments will be provided. There is a flat fee per family to attend the Mother-Son Night of Fun, with the proceeds going to the Smith Middle School PTO. Night of Fun co-chairs Angie Schlagnhaufer and Trina Armstrong explained that the new event is one of several that have been created as a replacement for the lap-running fundraiser that had once been the PTO’s most significant source of funds. “We’re hoping this becomes a big thing so we don’t have to do so many little (fundraisers),” Schlagnhaufer said. “It’s the first year, so there aren’t a lot of expectations. We have people signed up already, so we’re excited.” See Night Of Fun pg 4

West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will host open house events for prospective families interested in preschool through 12th grade on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and Thursday, Feb. 28, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Each event will begin with an information session at 6:30 p.m., followed by guided tours, a meet-and-greet with the teachers and an overview of curriculum. Child care will be provided. Little Falcons Preschool offers a full-day, multi-age classroom program for 3-, 4- and 5-yearolds on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Three- and 4year-olds have a half-day option. Kindergarten at WFCS is a full-day program. It is currently offered as four or five days per week. The kindergarten core curriculum includes reading readiness, mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, handwriting, writer’s workshop, arts and crafts, book time/story time, open-ended play, chapel, devotions and Bible. Specials include music, art, library, physical education and computer. Interscholastic opportunities for middle school students are available in the fine arts and athletics. Girls’ athletics include volleyball, soccer, basketball and track and field. Boys’ athletics include soccer, basketball, volleyball and track and field. In addition to the core subjects, middle
school students choose from a variety of elective subjects and clubs to broaden their interests and learning. All students participate in music and art programs. The Academy at West Fallowfield Christian School is a unique high school experience offered for ninth through 12th grades. The college-style model fosters student accountability and time management skills. It combines learning on campus two and a half days per week with the remaining days of independent study done at home. The Academy offers electives on Wednesday mornings. Some of the current elective offerings are art, music, life skills, SAT preparation, archery and nature/environment. During the course of the year, teachers plan all lessons, provide instruction and assign work to be completed at home on remaining days. Students are graded and issued report cards, and they compile portfolios of completed work. At the end of the year, achievements are assessed by the evaluator of the parents’ choice. A pay-per-class option is also available. West Fallowfield Christian School has a full comprehensive Resource Room to offer academic and learning support. The Chester County Intermediate Unit provides additional reading and speech therapy support. The small class size also gives students
opportunities to receive individualized attention. For 77 years, West Fallowfield Christian School has been providing Christian education for families and students in the surrounding communities. The school’s members attend a total of more than 38 churches in the Chester and Lancaster county areas. Bus transportation is supplied for kindergarten through eighth-grade students residing in the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea, Solanco, and Unionville-Chadds Ford school districts. Financial grants are available for eligible families in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the school at 610-5935011 for more information or to schedule an appointment. Readers may visit www.wfcs.org or find the school on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. In the case of inclement weather, readers may check the school’s website for alternate dates. Pictured on front: This past Christmas season, fourthgrade students at West Fallowfield Christian School performed an interpretive drama with sticks that was set to music. WFCS will hold open houses on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and Thursday, Feb. 28.
Art Festival Receives Honor The art festival of Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation was recently rated the best Art Fair on the East Coast and one of the top 50 in the nation by ArtFairCalendar.com, a juried fine art fair and art shows listings website promoting attendance at art fairs, craft shows, and art festivals nationwide. Close to 1,000 nominations were received online, and there were more than 2,000 voters. The surveys asked participants to select their five favorite art fairs and craft shows and which one is the best. The factors judged included quality of art, venue setting and ambiance, affordability/wide price range, familyfriendly/children’s activities, number of exhibitors, location, accessibility, parking, variety of media, and food and music. The America’s Best Art Fairs Awards are based on online voting by art fair patrons, collectors, organizers, and artists, both regionally and nationally. The national survey of art fairs and festivals is designed to recognize achievement in art fair event production and promote the cultural importance of fine art events across America. All proceeds from the art festival fund the Summer Music Series each year. To learn more, readers may visit www.longspark.org.

Additionally, the lodge will
welcome Col. Tom McCardell as an honorary inductee and Richard McMinn as assistant inductee. McCardell is a native of Kirkwood and a graduate of Solanco High School and the United States Military Academy. He is a decorated Army officer, has been deployed twice, and has earned several advanced academic degrees. McMinn is from Quarryville and worked for 56 years at Buck Iron Company, eventually becoming president and CEO. He has been honored by several trade organizations and has served on the advisory committee of Penn State University’s Department of Industrial Manufacturing Engineering. McCardell and McMinn will be inducted into the lodge at its annual banquet on Saturday, Jan. 26. Also during the Feb. 2
ceremony, attendees will hear from representatives of a halfdozen observational squads, who will report local groundhog sightings, and there will be a demonstration of the Groundhog Jig, Defender of the Faith Stuart J. Mylin will give remarks, and Hibernating Governor Richard Rankin, after consulting with Octorara Orphie, the lodge’s mascot, will deliver the forecast from the Pinnacle of Prognostication - a manure spreader. Coffee and doughnuts will be available at the event. The public is welcome to attend the celebration at no charge. Night Of Fun from pg 1 Armstrong explained that the idea for the new event came from comments from other parents. “We heard a lot of moms say they wished there was something like this (for them),” Armstrong said, noting that a daddy-daughter dance has taken place in the district for a number of years. Schlagnhaufer and Armstrong have consulted with their respective sons in planning the Night of Fun. Graydon Schlagnhaufer asserted that knockout will be the preferred style of basketball competition, and Wyatt Armstrong helped to test the Minute-to-Win-It-style games. “I had to beat my sister,” Wyatt commented. “It’ll be fun.”
Graydon and Wyatt, who are in seventh grade at Smith Middle School, will help to run activities at the Night of Fun. A number of Solanco High School students have also volunteered, as have PTO members and other parents. The refreshments will be donated by families from the school. If the Mother-Son Night of Fun is canceled due to inclement weather, a notification will be posted at www.solancosd.org, and the event will be rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2. For more information about the Mother-Son Night of Fun, readers may email Armstrong at trina@sickmansmill.com.

Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Information Posted The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is encouraging businesses to obtain the required spotted lanternfly permit to ensure they are complying with the spotted lanternfly quarantine orders. As the next phase of the spotted lanternfly life cycle gears up, now is an ideal time for businesses to learn how they can jumpstart this spring’s fight. There is no cost to businesses to obtain a permit. Under the law, businesses in Pennsylvania need to take the online permit training and exam and receive a permit for their vehicles. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture continues its work to contain and minimize the spread of the spotted lanternfly while also keeping commerce flowing in Pennsylvania. In November 2017, 13 Pennsylvania counties - Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, and Schuylkill - were placed under quarantine to help stop the spread of the spotted lanternfly. States with spotted lanternfly populations are also required to follow the permit requirements for Pennsylvania. This will help prevent the movement of the pest from other states into Pennsylvania. The spotted lanternfly permit training teaches business owners, managers, and designated employees how to comply with the quarantine an important legal designation to help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly - to ensure each of their employees are complying with the law. The quarantine order directs businesses, residents, and county authorities to follow guidelines to prevent the movement of the certain articles that contain any living stages of the spotted lanternfly, including egg masses, nymphs, and adults such as logs, stumps, or any tree parts; nursery stock; crated materials; and trucks or vehicles not stored indoors. By investing time and personnel to inspect vehicles to safeguard against transporting insects, people can help to ensure this pest does not reach farther beyond those counties that are already quarantined. As part of the spotted lanternfly quarantine agreement beginning on Wednesday, May 1, The Department’s Bureau of Plant Industry will begin to perform inspections and verification checks to confirm that businesses are properly permitted. Failure to take the permit exam and educate employees could result in possible penalties and fines. The permit training and testing can be accessed through Penn State Extension by visiting https:// extension.psu.edu/spotted -lanternfly-permit-training. For information regarding permitting, readers may contact slf permit@pa.gov. To learn more, readers may visit www.agricul ture.pa.gov/spottedlanternfly, www.aphis.usda.gov/hungrypest/slf, and http://extension.psu.edu/ spotted-lanternfly.

State Cultural and Historical Support Grants are now available for qualified museums and official county historical societies. This is the sixth year that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PMHC) has worked with the state legislature to provide funding for museums through the grant program. A total of $2 million was included in the 2018-19 state budget for the initiative. The Cultural and Historical Support Grant program is restricted to eligible organizations that are not supported by other state agency funding programs, including museums located in Pennsylvania with annual operating budgets exceeding $100,000 and at least one full-time professional staff person. Some museums are not eligible if they are eligible for grant support from other state agencies. The maximum award for a museum is $65,000. In addition, official county historical societies are eligible to apply. The awards for Official County Historical Societies range from $2,500 to $4,000. Applicants must meet organizational eligibility requirements. Awards are based on a calculation that uses the operating budget from the most recently completed fiscal year. Applications must be received by Friday, Jan. 25. All PHMC grant applications are now submitted on the commonwealth’s Single Application for Assistance system at www.esa.dced.state.pa.us. Eligibility information and grant guidelines can be found at www.phmc.pa.gov.
