Healthy Relationships Week will be observed at Solanco High School on Feb. 10 to 14. The event is sponsored by the Ophelia Club, represented by (from left) Christina Cylc, Emily Stalfire, and Jessica Mendenhall.

The members of the Ophelia Club at Solanco High School hope that by drawing attention to the value of healthy relationships, students will be encouraged to make wise decisions about the people in their lives. The club was launched as part of a national movement to promote healthy self-esteem and relationships through volunteerism, especially for women, explained school counselor and club adviser Lindsay Capoferri. In recent years, the club has opened membership to male students as well. Club members hope to impact the entire school during Healthy Relationships Week, which will be held from See Healthy Relationships pg 3

Festival from pg 1 festival will run from Friday, Feb. 14, through Sunday, Feb. 16. Most of the weekend’s activities will be open to spectators free of charge. “Our mission is to promote (Celtic culture) to the next generation, and one of the ways we do that is by having free admission, said festival chair and Paloma School of Irish Dance owner Esther Pujol. “We have one of the largest Irish music competitions on the East Coast, Pujol added. “The bagpipe competition will be on the fourth floor of the Marriott, with three competition areas. It has really exploded. Pujol noted that 25 pipers from eight states had registered by mid-January, and more were expected. The separate music competition, which will take place at Tellus360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, has already drawn nearly 40 entrants. Last year, the Irish dance competition was held only on Saturday and had 870 entrants, with more on a waitlist. To accommodate extra dancers, the contest will run from 4 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 14, with 350 competitors. The competition will resume at 8 a.m. on Feb. 15 and run until about 5 p.m. Saturday’s registration has been limited to 800 dancers. “I have students (at Paloma) who will do the Irish dance competition, the Irish music competition, and perform with the Keystone Fiddlers, Pujol remarked. “It’s a busy weekend. The Keystone Fiddlers group was founded by sisters Christy Martin and Melissa Hagy and is composed of their music students. The group plays mostly Irish and Scottish music, and its members will perform as part of an educational lineup on the Heritage Stage at the Marriott. Martin has coordinated the offerings on the Heritage Stage: an Irish Gaelic language workshop, performances by the Harrisburg Scottish Country Dance Society and the Rehoboth Welsh Choir,

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and many groups across the country observe National Wear Red Day each year on the first Friday in February to raise awareness about heart disease as the leading cause of death among Americans, especially women. The AHA notes that heart disease and stroke symptoms can present differently in women as compared to men. The Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and supported locally by companies throughout central Pennsylvania. CVS Health will offer nocost heart health screenings at MinuteClinic locations nationwide on select Thursdays in February. an Ode to Burns presented by Donald Henderson, a lecture on the mass grave of 57 Irish immigrants at Duffy’s Cut outside Philadelphia, and a demonstration of Irish set dancing. The Temple University Irish dance team will display its members’ talents on Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. on the Marriott main stage. Pujol said she has seen the group perform an Irish dance to the music of “Grease, so she is looking forward to seeing what the team has this year. A ceilidh - a traditional Irish dance party will be held after the performance at 7 p.m. Simple group dances will be taught and then called to music played by The Celtic Martins. Additional music groups appearing at the festival will be Cormorant’s Fancy, Charlie Zahm and Tad Marks, and Fire in the Glen. More than 20 vendors are slated to sell Celtic-related jewelry, hats, toys, shirts, foods, and dance supplies. There will also be a silent auction on Feb. 15, with proceeds helping to offset the cost of producing the festival. Pujol noted that the festival’s nearly $100,000 budget is supported by sponsors, and there are ongoing ways to help with fundraising. One specific need is for traveling trophies that are awarded to champions of the feis (competition). While admission to the festival is free, tickets will be required for admission to watch Hold Fast and Barleyjuice perform on the Marriott main stage at 6 and 7:30 p.m. respectively and to attend the Seasons concert at Tellus360 at 8 p.m. All three concerts will take place on Feb. 15. Additionally, the Glengarry Bhoys will perform at the Ware Center at 2 p.m. on Feb. 16, and admission will be charged. Tickets for each concert may be purchased by following the links at www.roseand shamrock.org/schedule. For more information about the festival, readers may visit www.roseandshamrock.org.

United Way of Lancaster County’s VITA Program is one of more than 12,000 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs across the country that the IRS relies on to help people file their taxes every year, completely free of charge. This year, VITA opened a new location, VITA Central, at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. This site will replace the Janet Avenue site and will be open year-round to assist clients with tax services. VITA provides free tax preparation services for federal, state, and local tax returns to taxpayers who make less than $62,000 and live, work, or go to school in Lancaster County. Last year, United Way’s IRS certified volunteers assisted more than 11,000 individuals and families in Lancaster County complete their tax returns and receive in

excess of $14 million in refunds. The volunteer tax preparers at United Way’s free tax preparation sites go through at least 40 hours of tax law training and are certified by the IRS. Volunteers are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. Seventeen VITA sites opened on Jan. 21 to ensure that clients receive their refund as quickly as possible. To schedule an appointment at one of VITA’s tax preparation sites around Lancaster County, taxpayers should call 211. Tax payers may also schedule an appointment or obtain more information about VITA locations, eligibility requirements, and more by visiting www.freetaxpreplancaster.org. bring one to play,” said youth services coordinator Sharon Roche. “It’s to have fun,” added library assistant Janee Anastasio. She shared about a pair of older women who regularly play a round of golf and then have lunch in the café, their enjoyment of the event obvious. Roche is new to the library - she will mark her first anniversary in May - but she previously worked in the same position at Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL). Go-Fore Golf, however, is unique to Quarryville. “I’m a little anxious about carrying it out for the first time,” she commented. However, Roche has been working hard to make sure the event is up to par, as established by her predecessors. “It’s something that’ll be a good memory for everybody,” she said. Alongside Roche’s work on Go-Fore Golf, she is also planning lots of programs for children and teenagers. “I’m trying to have something for elementary kids every Thursday at 6 p.m.,” Roche said, noting that movies, Coder Dojo, Snap Circuits, and Lego nights are

The newly formed Tri-County Senior Men’s Softball League (age 50 and up) is looking for additional expansion in 2020 for southern Berks, eastern Lancaster and Chester counties. Most fields are located within 25 minutes of southern Berks/eastern Lancaster county lines. The league is limited-arc, with 10 players in the field. New teams are being accepted, and a few teams need additional starting players. The new team registration deadline is Monday, Feb. 10. Readers may email seniorsoftball101@gmail.com if interested. Although field slots exist, new teams are encouraged to obtain a home field that is available on Mondays and/or Wednesdays and some Fridays.

The rare fifth Thursday in a month will be outsourced, with the Lancaster Science Factory slated to bring activities in April and Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories set to make ice cream with liquid nitrogen in July. She also has superhero movies and book groups for youngsters on tap as part of the Summer Reading Program. “My goal is to never have a moment where they’re without a book if they want to be a reader,” Roche commented. Roche would especially like to attract teenagers to the library. Previously, a teen advisory board (TAB) had been active, but the members have all aged out. While at MTPL, Roche had built a TAB with 40 members. “This is a message in a bottle, if you’re reading this, teens,” Roche said, noting that the advisory board would be a social group, but it would also offer guidance on what materials are purchased and what activities are offered for teenagers. There are plenty of ways that teenagers can volunteer at the library as well. “I would love to have a teendeveloped PSA to promote the library,” Roche remarked. “This would be really fun.” Roche invites interested teenagers to contact her at sroche@quarryvillelibrary.org or 717-786-1336.

Ophelia Club members have also planned to cover the sidewalks with messages about what love is and is not. All students in grades nine to 12 will participate in a follow-up lesson with their advisers during their PRIDE meetings on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Additionally, Capoferri said that she and her fellow school counselors have open doors and welcome questions or comments from students and parents about relationships. The school also has a Student Assistance Program (SAP), and parents, teachers, and students may refer anyone who needs help, whether it is someone else or themselves. Students who need the support are assigned a case manager. The SAP team meets weekly to ensure that no one slips through the cracks. Student small groups also meet to discuss common issues. “We’ve been creative in supporting students,” Capoferri remarked. Ophelia Club member Christina Cylc agreed, saying, “If teachers know (about a bad breakup), they will sit the students on opposite sides of the room.” “You see a lot on social media,” said Ophelia Club member Emily Stalfire. “I see a lot of girls whose boyfriends tell them who they can’t spend time with. They don’t know what to do about it. We need to talk about it. You’re not alone.” Capoferri related that it has become common practice for the dominant person in a relationship to demand the other person share phone and social media passwords. “There’s no privacy,” she said. “ We have an even greater responsibility to promote healthy relationships because it’s even more prevalent.” For more information about Healthy Relationships Week, readers may contact Capoferri at lindsay_capoferri@solancosd.org or 717-786-2151, option 3.

Monday, Feb. 10, through Friday, Feb. 14. The initiative is designed to inspire students to consider what constitutes a healthy relationship and be aware of the signs of an unhealthy relationship. While the friendships, dating relationships, and other types of connection among individuals will be discussed, the signs of dating violence will be highlighted. “If you are unhappy in a relationship more than you’re happy, it’s probably not a good relationship,” Capoferri said, relating a lesson she learned as a teenager and now shares with students. “ We want to plant seeds.” Drawing on resources from loveisrespect, Futures Without Violence, and Healthy Lifestyle Resources at Cornerstone, the Ophelia Club has curated daily announcements that will be aired on WSLC/Solanco YouTube. On Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 11 and 13, Jennie Straub from Cornerstone will offer lessons to ninthgraders, focusing on words that are key to recognizing unhealthy relationships and what to do next. Throughout the week, the Ophelia Club will promote the use of #1Thing, a social media hashtag created by loveisrespect to remind teenagers that by sharing one thing with someone, they can make a difference. Safety cards for teenagers will be available in the cafeteria so students know whom to go to if they need to talk about dating violence. Students will also have the opportunity to sign a large banner in the cafeteria, declaring their acknowledgment that they deserve to be in healthy relationships where they feel safe and supported. Posters will be displayed around the school to highlight important statistics as well as habits of healthy and unhealthy relationships. On the final day of the school week, which is Valentine’s Day, students will be encouraged to

Service Project from pg 1 By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) was founded in 1920 in response to war and famine in southern Russia, which is present-day Ukraine. That began a century of providing humanitarian relief, promoting sustainable development, and strengthening peacebuilding efforts around the world. For many Lancaster

County Mennonites, “MCC” is synonymous with relief kits and knotted comforters. The students and staff members at the New Danville campus of Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, have assembled school kits and hygiene kits for refugee children as part of their practice of completing multiple service projects every year. On Jan. 24, the

campus added “knotting comforters” to the list. Knotted comforters are a type of quilt - a pieced top and a solid back sandwiching a layer of batting - but instead of the layers being sewn together with thousands of tiny stitches, they are tied together with dozens of knots made of heavy thread placed about 4 inches apart. The comforters are a tangible and practical symbol of love and care, keeping displaced persons warm and protected in refugee camps. “We have a high population of Karen refugee (families in the school),” said New Danville principal Lindsay Carson. “They would have received (comforters).” Habecker Mennonite Church has mentored those families, and many of them have enjoyed being part of the church’s sewing circle, which makes comforters. The church provided the fabric that sewing circle coordinator Rhoda Charles sewed into com-

forters for New Danville’s project. Carson noted that other friends of the school donated comforters as well. A lot of the Karen students’ mothers helped throughout the school day as the third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classes finished the comforters by tying knots, and other parents and grandparents also assisted. Seventh- and eighth-grade students from the Locust Grove campus of LMS also came over to New Danville to help. The New Danville students in kindergarten through second grade decorated patches that will be incorporated into another comforter. “We wanted to have something the little kids could do and feel like they’re taking part,” said thirdgrade teacher Angela Dietzel, adding that the current plan is to sell that comforter at the school’s year-end fundraising auction. To prepare for the project, Charles visited the campus a few days beforehand to demonstrate

the process of creating a comforter. Then, on Jan. 24, the school day kicked off with an assembly in which MCC East Coast executive director Bruce Campbell-Janz spoke. When the first comforter was completed, an adult prayed over it and for its eventual recipient in English. Another adulted prayed over the second completed comforter in the Karen language, and a prayer in Spanish was offered for the third finished comforter. Thereafter, the students took turns praying, asking that the comforters would bring joy, warmth, comfort, and safety to their new owners. “It was so special to hear the children pray over them,” Charles remarked. “You really felt their spirit of identifying with (the recipients).” The students had a good time working on the projects and were reluctant to return to their classrooms, Charles noted. Several of the students were able to stay after

school to help, and ultimately, 20 comforters were completed. They will be added to the total made in North America and elsewhere as part of MCC’s Great Winter WarmUp, in which the organization aims to collect 6,500 comforters in honor of its 100th anniversary. “That’s one of the things I like about (the comforter project),” said LMS retiree Joyce Thomas, who helped to tie knots. “You feel like you’re doing it with people all over the world.” Pictured on front: Marcus Ortiz, a kindergarten student at the New Danville campus of Lancaster Mennonite School, and his mother, Yamelyn Ortiz, worked together to tie knots in a comforter on Jan. 24. The school campus participated in Mennonite Central Committee’s Great Winter Warm-Up and finished 20 comforters for global distribution.

A group of women meets on Tuesday mornings at New Danville Mennonite Church, 103 Marticville Road, Lancaster. The women represent all stages of adult life; find commonality in Bible study, crafts, speakers, and brunches; and call themselves SMILE, which stands for Share a Morning in Learning Exchange. Motivational speaker Bonni Greiner is a frequent presenter for SMILE, and she, along with Denise Grove and Sylvia Gearhart, will be the featured speakers at Refresh & Renew, a one-day retreat SMILE will host at New Danville Mennonite Church on Saturday, Feb. 15. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and light refreshments will be available. The program will begin with worship at 9 a.m. Greiner, Grove, and Gearhart will each give a keynote address throughout the day, and they will also offer breakout sessions. Lunch will be provided, and the retreat will conclude by 3 p.m. “We chose topics to appeal to women in a wide range of stages,” said Rebecca Kropf, a member of the planning committee. Topics will include homeschooling basics, bread-baking, self-image, trust in God, organizational strategies, marriage, and parent-

ing. “I enjoy making bread,” Kropf said, expressing her interest in that particular session. “There’s something very comfortable about bread, very ‘home.’ I’m looking forward to hearing what (Sylvia) says about it.” Planning committee member Heather Smith said she is looking forward to the keynote presentation “You Don’t Have to be Pinterest Perfect: You Are Already Enough.” “It’s easy to compare (ourselves with others),” she explained. The retreat is not designed to be a Bible study, but while attendance is open to every woman, it will be presented from a Christian perspective. “Bonni speaks from her heart,” said planning committee member Ruth Ann Stoner, adding that Greiner has a passion to see women fulfill their destinies in Jesus Christ. “It’s meant to be a day of encouragement,” Kropf explained. “There will be some challenging messages, but (attendees) will be encouraged by the speakers and the other women who are here.” The planning committee, which also includes Vanessa Brubaker, is hoping to have 100 women at the retreat. “I like getting people together,” Brubaker said, and described how she is planning to have chocolate and

Mares Claim Second Straight Section 3 Crown by Mona Steinhauer

A pair of wins over Cocalico and Manheim Central last week left Solanco on top of the Section Three standings for the second year in a row. Tuesday, January 28, they hosted a scrappy Cocalico squad and sent their seniors home with a 33-24 win. Two nights later, they hit the road to Manheim for their last section game of the season and the section title on the line. The Mares shook off a sluggish start and prevailed, 53-46. “It was a great team win,” said head coach Chad McDowell. “After losing the group we had last year I don’t think many people felt we

would be able to defend our section title. But the girls worked hard, and they did what they needed to do tonight. It’s a great win for our program and the school,” he added. With Rachel Nolt drilling three treys, the Barons jumped out to a 1511 first quarter lead. Solanco flipped the script in the second quarter, holding a 13-6 advantage while denying the hosts a single field goal and taking a 24-21 lead at the break. Nikki Trout, who held Manheim’s leading scorer, Maddie Knier (16.43 ppg), to eight points, sparked a 10 point third quarter, netting four of her eight points and pushing the lead to 34-24.

Manheim mounted its final rally down the stretch. With Nolt dropping in three more triples and Kassidy Michael adding eight points, the hosts finished with 21 but it wasn’t enough. Paige Phillips netted seven of her nine points and Jenna Dombach went 6-for-6 from the free throw line to account for 13 of Solanco’s 19 fourth quarter points. “They cut the lead to 47-44 and Paige came back and hit a huge three to swing the momentum in our favor,” said McDowell. “We were 8for-8 from the line in the fourth quarter and 13-for-13 for the game. “Everyone contributed,” he added. Jade Eshleman shook off three first half fouls and finished with a teamhigh 14 points. Phillips and Dombach combined for 17, Ilynd Rapant added seven, Arianna Seiberlich came off the bench with five, all in the second quarter, and Alana Yoder added two. The JV team also picked up a win, topping the Barons 39-24 behind Kendal Janssen’s 13 points. Jenna Ehler and Beg Bailey added six each. Seniors Alana Yoder, Emma Urbine, Ilynd Rapant and Jenna Dombach, along with junior Paige Phillips got the start against the Eagles and pushed Solanco to a 14-9 first quarter advantage, a lead they never relinquished. Phillips knocked down the first shot of the game, a three-ball, and added a layup seconds later for a quick 5-0 start. Dombach finished the frame with back-to-back three point plays, the first coming with an and-

one and the second, a shot from downtown with 20 seconds left. “We have a great group of seniors, and it was very fitting to get a win on Senior Night,” said McDowell. “They have given so much to our program and have dedicated years of hard work toward a common goal. “It was ugly, but a win is a win,” he continued. “We never really found any offensive flow, especially in the second half. We need to execute better moving forward.” That first quarter was the biggest quarter for the home team who held a 23-13 lead at the half and were outscored 11-10 after the break. Cocalico ran off six straight points in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 25-19 and Solanco was whistled for six fouls over those first six minutes as they struggled to keep momentum. Dombach knocked down her second trey of the night with 1:20 left in the third to cap the scoring with Solanco in front 28-19. Solanco, determined to run their set plays rather than the fast break, matched Cocalico with five fourth quarter points. Jade Eshleman (2 points) anchored that defense with a team-high nine boards while Dombach chipped in with seven boards and dropped in a game-high 11 points. Phillips finished with seven points while Yoder led with three steals and chipped in with three rebounds and six points. Fulton earned a 2:21 fall over CV’s Tyler Jordan before holding off Hempfield’s Grant Hoover, 6-1 in the quarters. He went on to shut out Warwick’s David Woolley 9-0 to get to the finals. Finishing in second place for the Mules was Nick Yannutz (195) and Jared Fulton (120). “Nick was a second seed,” noted Mendez. “He had a couple of opportunities to score in that final bout, a 3-2 loss to Donegal’s Garrett Blake, but was just a couple of inches away.” Fulton worked a 2:35 fall over Columbia’s Michelangelo Stewart, pinned McCaskey’s Justin Pacheco in

2:37 in the quarters and decked Hempfield’s Gordy Hoover in 3:26 before getting stopped in the finals. Also securing silver was Jared Fulton, a freshman. “He knocked off the top seed at 120, Penn Manor’s Tanner Stefanick, in an ultimate tiebreaker 42 to get to the finals,” Mendez recalled. “He lost two Stefanick twice before this meeting and both were by major decisions so this was big.” Fulton went on to face Griffin Gonzalez in the finals where he was dealt of 6-2 loss. Fulton opened the tournament with a 2:20 fall over Nathan Thomas (E-town) and then scored an 8-0 major decision over Central’s Brandon Kheuangthirath. Weston Bare (113) and Jackson Houghton (126) both added to the team total with fourth place finishes. Weston opened the tournament with two falls (:49 and 3:25) and then picked up a 6-1 decision over Central’s Connor Beck in the quarterfinals. In the semis he went up against top seed Matthew Inman (A-C) and lost a

Seven Solanco wrestlers placed in the Lancaster-Lebanon League championships at Manheim Township on January 24 and 25. From left, Weston Bare (fourth, 113 pounds), Joey Vandegriff (sixth, 132), Dominic Flatt (first, 106), Ronnie Fulton (first, 138), Jared Fulton (second, 120), Nick Yannutz (second, 195), and Jackson Houghton (fourth, 126).

tight 7-5 decision. He came back with a shutout in the consi semis before losing 5-1 to Hempfield’s Gio Luciano in the fight for third. “Weston wrestled that top seed tough,” said Mendez, “and then lost that four point match to the Hempfield kid who had beaten him by seven or eight before. He had a great tournament and showed improvement. “Jackson lost a tight one, 2-1 to Lampeter’s Arik Harnish, the eventual second place finisher in the semis and then lost to a tough Garden Spot kid (Mason Casey) in the third and fourth place match,” said Mendez. “He wrestled well.” Houghton pinned PV’s Carter Roher (1:10) and worked a 10-2 major to get to Harnish and then earned a 72 decision over Hempfield’s Clay Gainer to get to Casey. Rounding out the place winners was Joey Vandegriff’s sixth place effort at 132. “Joey wasn’t seeded so to come through and place showed great improvement,” said Mendez. “He had a couple upsets along the way.” After a first period fall in his opening match, Vandegriff suffered a 9-1 loss to Hempfield Reagan Lefevre, the eventual champ, but rebounded with two more falls, putting CV’s Eddie Hernandez to his back in 3:10 and doing the same to Elco’s Trenton Brubaker in 1:18. He dropped a 13-6

result in the consi semis and then suffered a 6-4 result against Penn Manor’s Trevor Grassel in the battle for fifth. The Mules were back at it Tuesday night when they traveled to Gettysburg for the opening round of the District Three Class 3A team tournament. The top seeded Warriors were undefeated at 17-0 and rolled into the semifinals with a 57-16 win over 16th seed Solanco. “It was a tall task but a good opportunity,” said Mendez. The action opened at 195 with Max Gourley taking a hard-fought 4-3 win over Yannutz. A fall at 220 and a forfeit made it 15-0. Solanco got on the board with Flatt’s 13-3 major decision at 106 and then cut the lead to 15-7 when Bare upended Montana DeLawder 5-3 at 113. Jared Fulton’s 8-1 win over Jacob Fetrow (120) closed the gap to 15-10 but that was as close as the Mules would get. Gettysburg took seven of the final eight bouts, picking up five falls and two forfeits. Ronald Fulton’s first period fall over Jacob Cherry (120) was Solanco’s final win. BOYS’ BASKETBALL While the wins have been slim, it hasn’t been for lack of effort. The Mules traveled to second place Cocalico (8-3, 11-8 overall) last Tuesday, January 28 where another slow start played a key role in their 61-47 loss.

The Eagles jumped out to a 15-5 first quarter lead and felt confident. Solanco, with a never quit attitude, came back to win the next two quarters 31-26, cutting the lead to 41-36 with eight minutes remaining. The hosts, with a 12-for-15 effort at the foul line, rallied for a 20-11 fourth quarter advantage to finish on top. Cocalico, with a game-high 19 points from Trey Griffin, placed three players in double figures. Solanco got a team-high 12 point effort from Colesen Sheaffer, who knocked down three triples, and ten points from Tyler Burger. Zed Baker (9), Jalen Henry (9), Ryan Smith (6) and Ethan Clary (2) rounded out the scoring. Thursday the Mules hosted the Barons where they looked to split the series. Instead, they were handed a 60-41 loss. Determined to get out of the gate early, Solanco tied the Barons at 14-14 in the first quarter. This time around, however, the middle frames proved to be the difference. The visitors poured in 33 points while holding Solanco to 10. Not giving up, the Mules looked to rally down the stretch but the damage was down. They did outscored the Barons 17-13. Sheaffer again led the offense with 10 points. Burger and Baker combined for 15. Henry and Clary each added five points with Smith and Marty Grawe chipping in with three each.

WRESTLING With seven medal winners, Solanco’s matmen finished in fourth place in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Wrestling Championships held at Manheim Township January 24-25. Hempfield ran away with the team title, accumulation 224 points to Garden Spot’s 186. The Comets finished just ahead of the Mules. “Our focus all week was to place in the top five,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “I think, on paper, we probably exceeded some expectations. We were without Nate Neuhauser (hand injury). He was a number two seed and that left a lot of points for us to make up. The guys wrestled well.” Dominic Flatt was the first grappler to stand on the podium. The top seed at 106 defended his title with a 12-6 decision over Township’s Josh Hillard. “Dom beat Hillard 11-8 during the regular season,” said Mendez, “so we expected a tight match. That was big.” After a bye, Flatt worked a 38 sec-

dog, cat, and Italian night. A number of quilts, including twin-size quilts, wall hangings, and lap quilts in a variety of themes, will go over the block. Organizers noted that they have a flower quilt, a dog quilt, and a garden quilt. One unusual quilt was created with a Three Stooges theme. Paintings by a local artist and small pieces of handmade furniture will also be auctioned off. Prizes and giveaways will include a refurbished computer and homemade items such as sweaters. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the event, may be purchased by calling 717-553-3161 or 717-888-3772. Food items, which will be included in the ticket price, will be pulled pork sandwiches; chips; beverages, such as water, soda, and coffee; and desserts. The Stitchers started about two years ago when a woman who was a social worker at a Lancaster hospice wanted to do something for veterans. The woman consulted her mother, and the pair thought making an afghan or quilt would be a good way to honor veterans. Kathy Baker and Jean Summers signed on to help, and when the founder of the group could not continue running the organization, the duo took over, renaming the organization Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans. Some donated quilts come from stitchers as far away as New York and Virginia.

SEASONAL

16 - ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition - February 5, 2020

College Slates Solo Exhibit The Gallery at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will present a solo exhibition by Ana Vizcarra Rankin, a mixed media artist and painter of maps. “Butterfly Effect” will be on display from Friday, Feb. 7, through Sunday, April 12. An artist talk will be held on Feb. 7 at noon, and an artist reception will take place during Lancaster’s First Friday event from 5 to 8 p.m. that evening. Rankin’s work formally explores scientific research topics, philosophical thought, and migrating movements. Using both micro and macro perspectives of the world and space, the artist creates maps that incorporate a variety of methods for plotting

and communicating spatial information. The exhibit includes Rankin’s constellation and world maps, global flight trackers, and studies of subatomic particles. Using images captured with powerful telescopes and other mediating technologies such as global positioning systems, Rankin creates art that explores the phenomenological sense of being in - and of - the universe. Rankin was born in Maldonado, Uruguay. A graduate of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Temple University, Rankin lives and works in Philadelphia. She has exhibited extensively, and her work is held in numerous private and public collections internationally.
