Legopalooza Is Almost Here! By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Legopalooza - that glorious event where children and adults may play with hundreds of thousands of tiny building blocks without having to worry about picking up the many, many pieces (or accidentally stepping on them in bare feet later) - will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. The third annual day of creative play will be held at Wrightsdale Baptist Church, 310 Little Britain Road, Peach Bottom. People of all ages are welcome to participate in Legopalooza. While most of the action will take place with Legos in the main room, a smaller room will be open for young children to play with Duplo blocks, which are easier for little fingers to manipulate and practically impossible for anyone to swallow. Legopalooza is presented by the
church in conjunction with Quarryville Library, Solid Rock Youth Ministries, Elizabethtown Public Library, and Oxford Public Library. Elizabethtown and Quarryville libraries will provide 20 gallons of Legos each. “It’s a lot of Legos,” commented Quarryville Library youth services coordinator Randi Kennedy. She noted that the libraries will each have a corner with a unique activity, and a car-racing station will be located in the center of the room. Attendees will receive Lego passports, as supplies last, that they can complete by visiting each activity. These will include a free build station, where anything may be built, and an “I Spy” challenge, where participants will be challenged to find specified items in the bins and buckets of blocks. Everyone who completes the challenges at each station will be entered to win a prize. See Legopalooza pg 7
Seminar Will Aim To Strengthen Marriages
Legos by the gallon will be available for creative play during the third annual Legopalooza event that will be held at Wrightsdale Baptist Church in Peach Bottom on Feb. 9.

Early in our marriage, I asked my husband how his day at work went. “Nothing to report,” he responded. “Hmph” was my eloquent reply. The Rose & Shamrock Festival will be held in downtown Lancaster city on Feb. 15, 16, and 17 and will feature a celebration of Irish music, dance, and culture. By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“Last year turned out to be even bigger than we thought it would be,” said Lancaster Celtic Arts Foundation president Esther Pujols, reflecting on the Rose & Shamrock Festival, which she chaired for the first time last year. “We had more than 2,500 attendees. In addition to piping, competitions will include Irish music, Irish dancing, Irish baking, and Celtic art. Pujols said that as of Jan. 30, almost 700 dancers have entered, and more are expected to register by the deadline of Saturday, Feb. 9. The feis is governed and sanctioned by An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (the Irish Dancing Commission), the North American Feis Commission, and the Mid-Atlantic Region. “We offer every level (of dance),” Pujols said. She noted that competitors range in age from single digits to 60s. “(Some of these dancers) are the caliber that are being scouted for Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. People don’t realize there are these super-talented kids (and young adults) right under their noses,” she added. Admission to the festival will be free of charge, thanks to sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. Thanks to an anonymous donor, $600 will be divided among the winners of the youth division of the Irish music competition. “The money will be paid directly to music teachers so these kids can

Much of the event will take place at the Lancaster County Convention Center and Lancaster Marriott, but Tellus360, Annie Bailey’s Public House, and The Meduseld Meadery will also host festival components. “We outgrew the Marriott,” Pujols said. “We want to move in the direction of (even) more venues next year, similar to Lancaster Roots and Blues. We’re assuming people will get out and about. People on social media seem excited about getting to the other venues (that we have announced).” In the Marriott itself, the number of stages devoted to bands has been increased to two. Additionally, both the performance by the Rehoboth Welsh Choir and the bagpiping competition sanctioned by the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association have been moved to larger spaces with more seating. “The organizers were shocked that people came to watch (the bagpipers),” Pujols said, explaining that piping competitions tend to be attended primarily by the musicians, but the interest of spectators was a welcome surprise.
continue their lessons,” Pujols said. She praised the quality of the musicians that participated last year, relating that the festival is part of the circuit that gets instrumentalists and vocalists ready for the competition that leads up to AllIreland. For All-Ireland the best Irish musicians from all over the world converge on a town in Ireland to compete for the highest honor in Irish music. “I’m not as familiar with the music scene, so this has been exciting for me to learn about it,” Pujols said. Professional musicians will perform throughout the festival and will include The Celtic Martins, Down By the Glenside, Charlie Zahm and Tad Marks, Fire in the Glen, Across the Pond, and Seasons. Dublin 5, a high-energy Celtic rock band from Annapolis, Md., and Lancaster’s own Ogham Stones will perform on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Marriott. Their performance is the only part of the festival that will require tickets. The festival will also offer instrument and Irish Gaelic workshops, traditional cuisine, vendors of all things Celtic, and more. Attention Neck Pain, Headache, Upper Back and Shoulder Stiffness Sufferers…
New Neck Pain & Headache Workshop Helping Local People Get Back to Normal Naturally Without Unnecessary Injections or Surgery Do you have trouble sleeping at night because of neck pain? Do you struggle to turn your head to the side (when you’re driving) because of neck stiffness? Do you suffer with headaches or light headedness? Do you have tension in your neck and upper back when you work around the house…like vacuuming or cooking? Do you get tingling or numbness in your hands and fingers OR feel weak and embarrassed when you try to open a jar or lift something? Do you just want to get back to moving normally and be able to do your day-to-day activities…naturally? If you’re looking to feel younger and feel stronger again, then going to the Neck Pain & Headache Workshop may be one of the best decisions you make. Neck and upper back problems can cause you to feel pain and stiffness - and can cause numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms and hands…making it difficult to live your life and complete everyday actives… Neck pain can stop you from feeling normal…feeling like yourself. • It can force you to take pain medications, Ibuprofen, or even get cortisone injections (which are known to cause other health problems). • Everyday activities like driving, doing work at a computer desk, cooking, cleaning, doing yardwork…or even sleeping can feel difficult to impossible to perform. • You can feel irritated, upset or uncomfortable trying to keep up with your family or friends or going to work. • You might feel like you’re neglecting your yard, house or garden… • Neck pain and tension can distract you from focusing on what you’re doing (forgetting why you went to the store…or what you were going to do). • And it can take away from your ability to live a normal life…feeling like you are holding your co-workers or friends and family back… Less movement and less living can lead to depression and stress…and can even lead to more pain and less movement. Not good. Here at Neff Physical Therapy, we’ve helped thousands of neck pain and headache sufferers from right here in Quarryville…and the rest of Lancaster County… who have suffered needlessly with neck problems…it’s one of our specialties. Most were having pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness…and were looking to heal naturally without medications, injections or surgery.
Here’s What Some People Were Saying BEFORE They Started in the Neck Treatment Program: “I could hardly turn my head to the left at all.” “The pain in my neck kept me from sleeping.”
And Here’s What Those Same People Are Saying Now AFTER The Neck Treatment Program: “I felt much better after my 1st visit and in 2 weeks my neck pain was gone!”
“I was in so much pain that I could not function.”
“For years I abused my neck and back, they were so helpful in getting me back to my functional self.”
“I was in the ER with pain that came around to my chest.”
“One thing I learned is that you don’t have to live in debilitating pain.” “I have no more headaches.”
So by request, I’m hosting a Neck Pain and Headache Workshop at Neff Physical Therapy | Wed., February 20th, 6:30 P.M. | located at 203 Commerce Drive, Quarryville If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: 3 The #1 Single Biggest Mistake neck pain & headache sufferers make which actually stops them from healing. 3 The 4 Frequently Overlooked causes of neck pain…(#1 frequently causes headaches for people who sleep on their side or stomach). 3 The 3 Keys to Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money). 3 The Top 3 Exercises for Neck Pain and Headaches anyone can do safely at home without fancy exercise equipment. 3 What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery.
How Do You Claim Your Seat for the Neck Pain & Headache Workshop? Call 717-786-1245 to Register for the Neck Pain Workshop and Claim Your Seat. When you register, we will mail or email you The Neck Pain and Headache Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. nearly 40 years and have served together in church ministry for 25 years. They are the parents of three adult sons, and they have three grandchildren. Their relationship is the source of exemplary - and cautionary - tales. “We’re real about our mistakes and faux pas,” Tom remarked. “We bring in stories from our own lives. Thelma’s a good storyteller. In sports terms, I’m the play-by-play guy, and she’s the color commentator.” As a professional counselor, Tom typically sees marriages that are at risk of dissolution. A lack of emotional intimacy tends to be one of the primary culprits. “I’ve heard someone describe intimacy as ‘into me see,’” Tom said, explaining that sensitive responses allow both partners to open up and be honest about their feelings and fears, which women tend to appear to want more readily. “Men have been socialized not to share, and this leads to distancing,” he added. “I ask men, ‘Do you really want your marriage to be better?’ to encourage them (to be vulnerable).” While the Horsts will teach for several hours, there will also be time for couples to talk among themselves and opportunities to speak individually with Tom. The Horsts will provide handouts designed to enhance attendees’ participation, as well as a bibliography relevant to growing marriages. There is a cost to attend the seminar, which will include a continental breakfast. Financial assistance will be available for those who qualify. Preregistration is preferred, but couples may register at the event as well. Attendance is open to everyone regardless of religious affiliation. New Hope executive director Neil Uniacke shared that last year’s seminar attracted 16 couples, including at least one Amish couple. “I felt there was a lot of openness (among attendees),” he said. For more information or to register, readers may call New Hope at 717-786-2802.

United Way of Lancaster County is once again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to prepare federal, state and local income tax returns for free. United Way of Lancaster County’s VITA Program is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that the IRS relies on to help people file their taxes every year, completely free of charge. Last year, United Way of Lancaster County’s IRS-certified volunteers helped more than 10,000 individuals and families in Lancaster County complete their tax returns. VITA saved Lancaster County residents more than $2.7 million in tax prep fees, and more than $12.4 million in refunds went into their bank accounts. VITA provides free tax preparation services, including federal, state and local returns, to taxpayers who make less than $62,000 and who live, work or go to school in Lancaster County. The volunteer tax preparers at United Way’s free tax preparation sites understand the 2018 TCJA (tax reform). They go through at least 40 hours of training and are certified by the IRS. The purpose of the program is to provide customers with high-quality, professional, personal service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. The IRS will delay issuing refunds for taxpayers claiming the EITC and ACTC until Friday, Feb. 15. The law is designed to help the IRS find and stop fraud. However, the IRS notes that these refunds likely will not arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until late February. Even though refunds may be delayed, taxpayers are still encouraged to file as early as possible. The county’s VITA sites began opening on Jan. 22. Sites include Community Action Partnership, 601 S. Home-Based Head Start Welcomes New Students By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“(Home-Based Head Start) is perfect for my child,” commented Nedra Rohm, whose 5-year-old daughter, Leah, participates in the program that recently opened in Strasburg. Once a week, home visitor Melanie Bird spends 90 minutes with Leah and Nedra at their house, working together to help Leah make a successful transition to kindergarten next fall. “Large crowds are too much (for Leah), and there’s less stimulation in a one-onone at home,” Nedra said. “She’s getting what she needs. It’s awesome that they provide this.” Head Start offers a free, high-quality prekindergarten program for 3- and 4year-old children from income-eligible families. It is parent-based and uses the Parents As Teachers curriculum.
“Parents are the child’s first teachers,” Bird explained. “I teach the parent, who teaches the child, and when they go to school, these are the parents who will be involved.” In addition to weekly home visits, students who enroll in the Strasburg-area Head Start program are also encouraged to attend two socialization days a month, which are held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 40 W. Main St., Strasburg. Between the individualized and group instruction, students will be assisted in developing fine motor skills, as well as literacy and cognitive skills. They will also learn about health, nutrition, and safety. Nedra noted that while large groups are difficult for Leah, she has done well in the group meetings. “There’s not a big crowd here,” Nedra remarked. “It gives her another outlet for See Head Start pg 10

Solanco Beats Manheim, Clinches Section Crown by Mona Steinhauer
Playing their first and only game of the week this past Saturday afternoon, Solanco’s girls’ basketball team shook off the rust and weathered a gutsy effort by a young Manheim Central squad to clinch the LancasterLebanon League Section Three title outright, 48-49 in Quarryville. Solanco’s last title was in 2011-12 when they were in Section Two. Saturday the Mares improved to 10-2 in league play (16-4 overall) and secured the Section Three crown with one regular game remaining. “We had big contributions from everyone,” said head coach Chad McDowell. “Jade Eshleman did a great job on the boards and converted several of her offensive boards for points. Kara McClune has been a defensive spark since returning from her minor surgery around the holidays,” he continued. “Her energy has been a vital part to our success this season. “Paige Phillips hit a big three to keep momentum on our side and Mackenzie Gladfelter hit two huge baskets in the first quarter to propel us in our quick start,” added McDowell.

Solanco’s Aleksa Burger hits a short jumper over Manheim’s Kassidy Michael for two of her game-high 14 points in the Mares’ 48-39 Section Three win at home last Saturday.
“Nikki Trout also did an awesome job when we ran into foul trouble at the guard spot. She stepped in and was an effective defensive presence when we needed it.” That quick start included a 7-0 run to start the game and a 17-5 advantage after eight minutes. The young Barons, starting three freshmen and with no seniors, battled back and, over the course of the next three quarters, actually outscored Solanco 34-31. With an 8-0 run late in the second quarter, Manheim cut the lead to 27-21 but a bucket by Aleska Burger, two free throws from Grace Kreider and a transition basket by McClune lifted Solanco to a 3323 lead at the break. “It was a challenging week, with the weather, early dismissals and cancellations, getting in the gym,” noted McDowell. “We practiced Monday and got in 20 minutes on Wednesday before the Cocalico game was cancelled. Then we held a modified practice Saturday morning, prior to the game. “So we definitely looked rusty. But a win is

ten treys on the day, took charge early, jumping out to a 20-12 first quarter surge. Solanco, behind eight points from Dawson Kreider, got one point back in the second frame but the Mules were still in the hole, 34-27, at the break. Cameron Snell and Kreider each put up eight third quarter points but it was the Barons that scored a 23 point third quarter, splashing in another four triples and grabbing their biggest lead of the night, 57-37. They opened the frame with a 12-0 run, forcing five turnovers in a three minute span and converting at the other end. Down, but not about to give up, the Mules, who fell to 3-16 overall, got to work. Colesen Sheaffer and Zach Wiker each netted five points, including a triple, and Kreider added six as

good, no matter how it looks. We never really got into a rhythm, offensively or defensively,” he added. “The missed layups and the lack of moving our feet on defense were all the result of the broken practice. However we were able to persevere and got the expected result.” Both teams were held to single digits in the third and fourth quarters as numerous shots were missed by both squads. After three minutes of scoreless play, Kreider opened the third quarter with a bucket in the paint. Burger and Phillips added backto-back put backs that gave the hosts a 39-25 lead with 1:30 left in the quarter. Manheim responded with a 7-0 run, including a triple by Kamryn Miller that cut the lead to 39-32 before Phillips canned a deep three with 1.5 seconds left. Jess Cabrera opened the fourth with a pair of free throws and Burger scored in the paint for a comfortable 46-32 lead. Manheim, again, responded. This time with a 6-0 run that cut the lead to 46-39 with 2:16 left. Cabrera’s fast-break layup with 49 seconds to go sealed the victory. Burger led all scorers with 14 points and Cabrera added 9. Eshleman (8), Kreider (6), Phillips (5), Gladfelter (4) and McClune (2) also contributed. The Mares, who dominated Manheim 64-38 back on January 15, were a solid 7-for-9 from the free throw line while the Barons (2-17 overall) were 10-of-23. WRESTLING Head coach Tony Mendez and his troops realized the task of taking on the top seed in the District Three team tournament last Wednesday but met that challenge head on. “We knew it was a tough match but it was also a great opportunity,” said Mendez. “There were some very tough individual matches which will help the guys as we prepare for the post-season.” Dallastown took charge early and never hesitated in a 55-15 home victory. The hosts won the first seven bouts of the night, all with bonus points, and including two forfeits. The Mules slowed that run when Robert Castagna scored an 11-9 decision over Blake Feeney at 195. After getting pinned at 220 and 285, Solanco came back with a pair of hard-fought decisions. Dominic Flatt (106) came away with a 6-4 decision and Jackson Houghton won a 14-12 thriller in sudden victory overtime. “Jackson got way behind on the board, getting cradled three times,” recalled Mendez. “But he showed a lot of heart coming back in the third period with several takedowns to tie the score and push it into overtime where he quickly scored the winning takedown.” Solanco forfeited at 120 and Chase Charles closed the action with a 2:18 fall over Donovan Trauger (126). “Chase was in control the whole match,” said Mendez. “Nick Yannutz (220) wrestled a 2018 state qualifier competitively before giving up a five point move. Again, gaining valuable experience that will hopefully help him prepare for the sectional tournament in one week.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL With the extreme weather last week, the basketball team managed just one game, a road trip to Manheim Central Saturday afternoon. The Barons, sitting just above Solanco in the Section Three standings, used a pair of 20-points plus quarters to hold off the Mules, 65-55. The hosts, dropping in four of their

West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will hold its first STEAM event on Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, and all fields will be represented at the event. The community is invited to view numerous interactive, hands-on displays presented by the school and supporters. The free event is designed to appeal to youngsters from prekindergarten through eighth grade and their families, and it should interest students from all schools, as well as WFCS students. The entire middle school staff from WFCS is involved in planning and implementing the event, including the English and social studies departments. The Academy high school-level students will also be involved as presenters.
The idea for the event was generated by language arts department teacher Mark Fiscus, who is involved with the Envirothon competition and Nature Club at WFCS. He saw a similar presentation at a public school and was impressed by the presentations and by the enjoyable atmosphere provided for the community. “It was a great evening. I really enjoyed going around looking at all the different tables and seeing what people were doing,” Fiscus said. “I presented it to the teachers here, and there was an enthusiastic response.” At least 20 stations will be set up in the multipurpose and art rooms, where visitors can walk to the different tables and participate. “The whole idea is these can be hands-on presentations. (Visiting) students can actually participate,” Fiscus said. “The main purpose is to have a community project where people come in and

WFCS principal Robbie Martin said that even though WFCS is a small Christian school, it keeps up with advances in education. “What we do is take what we’ve got and move it forward to the best of our ability. We’re a forwardthinking school, and we’re very much doing what everybody else is doing,” he noted. Martin encourages the community to enjoy the first-time event. “Come and see what we do, but at the same time there is also going to be other stuff there so you can see what’s actually going on in education as a whole,” he said. “We’re excited to have it, and we look forward to the community being here.” West Fallowfield Christian School is

workshops will be held periodically. Home-Based Head Start is offered by Lancaster County Head Start, which is a program of Community Action Program of Lancaster County. The program is funded by federal grants. Bird noted that the federal government wants a Head Start to operate in every school district in the country. Because the Strasburg-area Head Start is located in a church, not a school building, enrollment is not limited to children who live in the LampeterStrasburg School District. Bird currently has openings for five children and will create a waiting list. Parents who would like more information or would like to enroll their children may call Bird at 717-333-1939.
