Children’s Book Honors Author’s Late Aunts BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

t took New Providence resident Kim Mowery less than two days to write “The Crownless King,” the first book in her Christian children’s series “The Pilgrimage of Jacki and Gerri.” Its origins, however, date back more than 80 years. Mowery was 14 years old when she learned that she had twin aunts who died in childhood. Her grandmother, Sarah June, never spoke about the girls, so when she died when Mowery was 19, any information she could have shared died with her. After she married and had three sons, Mowery experienced her own child loss. In 2005, her daughter, whom she named Sarah June, developed a cancerous brain tumor at 16 months and died two-and-ahalf years later. Mowery realized that she could relate to the first Sarah June. In 2014, Mowery set out to learn more about the twins. She found their burial site in Ohio and through cemetery records

I

discovered that the girls had been born prematurely on Jan. 23, 1940. Jacqueline Ann was stillborn, and Geraldine Doris lived 48 hours. Mowery was struck by the dates. Her daughter, Sarah June, had died on Jan. 24. “There is no such thing as coincidence, only divine intervention,” Mowery said. For years, Mowery had wanted to write a book about her grandmother’s life as a way to bring her back to Earth and allow her to grieve the loss of her twins. Instead, she felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit to focus on the children. The Pilgrimage series features their imagined adventures in heaven and provides a way for youngsters to personally connect with Jesus Christ and biblical principles. The books are illustrated by local artist Anna Kelsey and are available in paperback and hardcover wherever books are sold. Mowery also donated a copy to Quarryville Library, from which it may be borrowed by patrons. See Children’s Book pg 3

I interviewed for a part-time job as a proofreader a few hours before my wedding rehearsal on Dec. 28, 2006. When I received the offer to join Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. as a full-time feature writer and photographer, I was buying last-minute decorating supplies in a discount store. I was so excited to have my first salaried professional job that I forgot to introduce the members of the bridal party to each other. One of my sisters later asked me who the person was who escorted her down the aisle. See Farewell pg 6

“I never thought in a million years that I’d write kids’ books,” Mowery commented. “My grandmother always wanted to be a writer, but she used to say the 1930s and ’40s weren’t the time for women authors. All these years later, her dreams are coming true (through me).” Mowery wants her books to encourage readers and to give them hope. “This Earth isn’t our home,” she explained. “People need to look beyond what’s here on this Earth because it’s going to be gone one day.” For more information about Mowery and “The Crownless King,” readers may visit www.authorkimberlymowery.com.

Eshleman sparked a 14-7 second quarter with 10 points and Solanco led 23-18 at the break. The visitors held on with a 23-21 second half effort and picked up their second win of the season. “Jade had a big game inside,” said McDowell. “She pretty much had her way. “As a team, we shot 45% from the field and 85% from the foul line,” he added. But the visitors were a solid 11-of-13 from the free throw line. West York was 4-of-10. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Solanco faced a tall task when they hosted Section Three leader Lampeter-Strasburg Thursday, January 28 but they hung tough despite suffering a 55-40 loss. The visitors placed three players in double figures, including 18 each by Ty Burton and Isaiah Parido. Zed Baker, who was 5-of-7 from the free throw line, was tops for the Mules with 9. Colesen Sheaffer and Tyler Burger added eight each and Ethan Clary and Ryan Smith combined for 13. “Burton was the big focus for us,” said head coach Dave Long. “He had 26 the first time. We did a great job with him in the first half as he only had six. Because of all the attention to Burton, Parido stepped up and had 18. “I was proud of our guys,” he continued. “The lead got bigger in the fourth as we had to extend our defense so they couldn’t stall.” L-S held a 10-8 first quarter lead and were up 28-22 at the break. Parido poured six treys over the second and third quarters, sparking the visitors to a 42-33 advantage with eight minutes remaining. Burton’s 11 fourth

quarter points extended the lead. WRESTLING On the road Wednesday, Feb. 3, Solanco’s wrestlers earned their second one-point win of the season, holding off Cocalico 32-31 on a 5-1 match clinching decision by Robert Castagna (215). The Eagles pinned in the last bout but it wasn’t enough. Dominic Flatt (106) set the tone with a 17-2 tech fall and, after forfeiting at 113, Solanco earned backto-back falls from Weston Bare (120) and Jarod Fulton (126) for an 11-point lead. The hosts pinned at 132 but Solanco countered. Jackson Houghton scored a 3-1 decision over Aiden Swann, Ronnie Fulton (145) pinned in 1:22 and Steven Williams worked a 9-7 sudden victory at 152 for a 29-12 advantage. “Steven was down 7-2 in the third and came back to tie and then win in overtime,” praised head coach Tony Mendez. “Blaine Plastino, at 172, almost did the same thing in the third period but fell two points shy. “Not everything went as planned but the team pulled together for a hard-fought win.” Cocalico made its run down the stretch, winning four of the last five bouts only to fall short with Castagna’s decision. After dominating Warwick 57-15, for their seventh straight win, on Wednesday, January 27, Solanco hosted Dallastown and Central Dauphin on Saturday and came away with mixed results, starting the action with a 33-26 win over the Wildcats before bowing out 53-12 to the Rams. With just three falls in the match, the Mules ground out some tough wins against the Wildcats. “For us to win is huge,” said Mendez. “Two years ago, in a District Team match, we won just two bouts. They’re a quality squad. This is a good win for our program.”

Flatt (113) earned Solanco’s first Tocci. “That was a tough match,” fall, in 1:00, and tied the match at 6-6. recalled Mendez. “I felt we were on Houghton’s 6-3 decision at 132 led to the offense the whole time. “It was a colorful, textural, whimsical, and three-dimensional line,” Celli said. “My collection stood out, and that’s how the Gypsies found me. They tracked me down, and I’ve been designing for them ever since, and that was over 40 years ago.” Celli opened the Sondra Celli Company in Waltham, Mass., in 1981 and specialized in what she calls “uncommon crystal couture.” She does all the patternwork herself and cuts all the pieces for every design. Staff members sew the garments together before other workers, called “blingettes,” add the surface embellishments. “The stones are put on one-by-one by hand,” Celli explained. “It’s a laborintensive job, but the results are outstanding, eye-catching designs.

As I like to say, ‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling.’” Celli published a book with Atglen-based Schiffer Publishing in 2019. “BLING! The Uncommon Crystal Couture World of Sondra Celli” includes insight into her career as well as directions for several embellishment projects. The common thread running through LASN’s programs this year is that of challenge. The first program, on Jan. 25, featured sewing with velvet, a persnickety fabric that can pose difficulties for even experienced sewists. Celli has been asked to speak about challenges she encounters in her work, which include managing dozens of yards of fabric in a single gown and creating the attendant accessories, See Bling! pg 7

Farewell from pg 1

by

That excitement continued on my first day, Jan. 8, 2007, as my predecessor, Ethan Riley, showed me the ropes … and then turned to anxiety when I was solely in charge of finding articles in a news cycle that never stopped. Eventually, however, I settled into the role of “Newspaper Lady,” one that I have been privileged to hold for 14 years. My clients have made all the difference. You invited me into your homes and into your hearts. I have so many fond memories: -Robah Hess teaching me to be careful with my instructions during photoshoots by popping out his dentures when I asked him to show me his teeth when he smiled. -Competing in the invitational milking contest at the Solanco Fair. -Being teased by Bethesda United Methodist Church members the first time I experimented with purple hair. -Standing in a pasture at Noble Hill Horse Rescue as horses grazed around us - and then one tried to eat my notepad. -Judging a cooking class contest at Penn Manor High School. And there are the not-so-fond memories: -The death of Lancaster County Master Gardener Tom Beck in 2015. This hit me hard because we had worked on numerous stories together. I treasure the giant allium that blooms outside my front door every spring; it was the party favor from the Master Gardener dinner where Tom and his wife, Betty, hosted me a few months before his passing. -The time I combined the names of two educators and misnamed Martin Meylin Middle School principal Jamie Raum in print. -The day I interviewed a group of individuals who had planted a new church - and then went to my next appointment and realized I was at the church they had left. I have always been grateful that I have not had to cover hard news. I have witnessed your joys and celebrations, your Eagle Scout achievements and fair queen coronations. There have been stories rooted in sorrows as well: 9/11 stair climbs and family members raising money for Relay For Life in memory of loved ones who died of cancer. I have been privy to your frustrations and, at times, anger, but it has been a blessing to reassure you that “we publish only good news, so this is off the record.” Like it was for so many people, 2020 was a difficult year for me. As the year dragged on, I realized the time had come for me to try something different, to grow in a new direction. My last day as the Newspaper Lady was Feb. 5. I have moved on, but I have not moved See Farewell pg 7

ness, consistent,” Celli commented. “We spent a lot of time using up inventory to create masks for front line workers, donating hundreds of masks to area hospitals, veterans, and senior citizens.” LASN president Rachel Siegel noted that the silver lining of meeting virtually is that the group can more easily host guest speakers from outside the area. “Even if we don’t expect to ever create or wear something as elaborate as Sondra’s creations, I am sure that we will all learn something that we can put into use in our own sewing, whether it is a handy tool, the name of a supplier, or a technique that cleverly solves an issue,” Siegel said. I have often had to put anywhere from three to six blingettes on one dress in order to get it done.” 2020 was also a challenge for the Sondra Celli Company. Celli noted that her biggest problem was getting supplies from her New York vendors because the state had shut down. With a nod toward its Giant Choice Rewards program, Choice Pass will replace the current model of PodPass. To underscore this customer-facing change, Choice Pass also comes with a new logo that takes its origins from Giant Choice Rewards. The Giant Company introduced the Giant Direct brand in February 2019 when it debuted its first ecommerce hub in the city of Lancaster. In July 2019, the company opened its 100th pickup location, in Carlisle. Along the way, the company also launched a new website to deliver a unified online experience bringing everything together for customers - all offerings, products and Giant Choice Rewards with a bolder interface and enhanced personalization. Customers across 90% of the company’s footprint have access to online grocery ordering and delivery services. Readers may visit www.giant foodstores.com or www.martins foods.com for more information.

E VE NT

SPECIAL FINANCING

for up to

Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will present “Happy Days, A New Musical” on Wednesday, Feb. 24, through Saturday, April 3. Based on the hit Paramount Pictures television series “Happy Days,” this family-friendly musical features Richie, Potsie, Ralph Malph and Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli. The drive-in malt shop Arnold’s is in danger of demolition, and the friends come up with a plan to save it with a dance contest and a TV-worthy wrestling match. The show has music from Oscar-winner Paul Williams and a book by the TV series’ original creator, Garry Marshall. Dutch Apple is reopening with “Happy Days, A New Musical” after being shut down for nine weeks. Dutch Apple will remain operating at a reduced capacity with socially distanced seating. Masks will still be required while in the theater in accordance with the governor’s current mandates. For a list of the health and safety measures the theater has taken, readers may visit www.DutchApple.com. Ticket prices vary, and group pricing is available for groups of 16 or more. Tickets can be reserved by calling 717898-1900, visiting the aforementioned website or stopping at the box office at 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster.
